Shirley Manson slams Kanye: ‘You make yourself look small & petty & spoilt’

FFN_Grammy_Awards1_KMFF_020815_51648426

As we kept discussing during our Grammy coverage – because it was literally the most interesting thing about the Grammys – Kanye West threw some major shade at Beck. Beck won Album of the Year for his album Morning Phase and that meant Beck beat out Beyonce’s self-titled album. Kanye “jokingly” jumped on stage with Beck, like he was going to pull an “Imma let you finish” but ‘Ye laughed and went back to his seat. But it wasn’t over. On the E! post-Grammy show, Kanye spoke about how Beyonce should have won and Beck should have given her the Grammy, saying in part:

“I don’t know what he said, all I know is if the Grammys want real artists to keep coming back, they need to stop playing with us. We ain’t gonna play with them no more. ‘Flawless,’ Beyoncé video. Beck needs to respect artistry and he should have given his award to Beyoncé, and at this point, we tired of it… Because what happens is, when you keep on diminishing art and not respecting the craft and smacking people in the face after they deliver monumental feats of music, you’re disrespectful to inspiration and we as musicians have to inspire people who go to work every day and they listen to that Beyoncé album and they feel like it takes them to another place…Then they do this whole promotional event, they’ll run the music over somebody’s speech, the artist, because they want commercial advertising. Like, no, we not playing with them no more. By the way, I got my wife, my daughter and my clothing line, so I’m not going to do nothing to put my daughter at risk but I am here to fight for creativity. That’s the reason why I didn’t say anything tonight. But you all know what it meant when ‘Ye walks on the stage.”

[From E! News]

Beck handled the whole situation with a surprising amount of grace, discussing how much he loves Beyonce and Kanye, and even calling Kanye a “genius.” Just my opinion: Kanye already looked like a crashing bore and Beck came out of the night looking gracious and kind. But Shirley Manson – best known perhaps as the frontwoman of Garbage and one of the best frontwomen to come out of the 1990s music scene – decided to chime in on the whole situation. She wrote on Facebook:

Dear Kanye West

It is YOU who is so busy disrespecting artistry.

You disrespect your own remarkable talents and more importantly you disrespect the talent, hard work and tenacity of all artists when you go so rudely and savagely after such an accomplished and humble artist like BECK.

You make yourself look small and petty and spoilt.

In attempting to reduce the importance of one great talent over another, you make a mockery of all musicians and music from every genre, including your own.

Grow up and stop throwing your toys around.

You are making yourself look like a complete twat.

Ps.I am pretty certain Beyonce doesn’t need you fighting any battles on her account. Seems like she’s got everything covered perfectly well on her own.

[From Facebook]

Word. I love her for “daring” to tell Kanye that he’s acting like a douchenozzle because he IS. It would have been fine if he had done the stage-rush thing and it would have been fine if he said “I thought Beyonce should have won, but Beck is a great artist too.” I would have even been fine with Kanye talking about racism in the context of the Grammys, like the fact that the Grammys tend to award white artists much more than black artists in general. But, the way Kanye went about it… it was rude and Shirley is dead-on. He does look “small and petty and spoilt.”

    Thank YOU!!

I am reading everywhere how funny it was etc. etc. no it was f*cking rude and he wasn’t joking, he went on a mad rant to E! about artistry and how he isn’t going to take it anymore while banging on about his clothing line. All while having his wife, that crotchjockey standing beside him.
    I hate him.

    • **sighs** says:

      Crotchjockey! Lol!

Oh, and I agree with everything you said.

    • Sarah says:

Did you happen to see the video of him ranting on E? Kim is staring at him with this smile pasted on her face like she can’t believe she married this shit. When Kim K appears embarrassed, you know you’ve gone too far. LOL!

    • AG-UK says:

+1000 I cannot stand him as my friend said yesterday he needs a 72hr hold and btw I really like Beck’s album or whatever they call it these days

      • Nicky says:

Everything is through the prism of rascim with this blog and writer . Really turning me off this blog
There are as many traditional( soul, rap, R&B, gospel) black catoergies as there are white catoergies at the Grammy’s .
So how are they honouring white artists.

I think a lot people getting tired rascim card and this sence of entitlement , every time people don’t get what they want .
Black peple aren’t half of the American population for the last 57 years they are about 8% to 12% of the population and black artist have won Album of the Year 12 times , that just black artsist not various artists with or bands with black musicans , like last years Daff Punk

That’s 21% so how are they underrepresented , it isn’t about making sure they are represented it wanting them to dominate the culture .

And if you take into account Gammy’s globally as well, how many western nations/ artists Europe, Canada , Australia blacks even become less of a minority and musically less representing of the audiences.

        Give it a rest.
WTF you were ok with Kanye walking on stage , and saying Beyonce should have won because he decided he wanted to protest WHAT ??

      • db says:

@Nicky Raving is never a good look, dear. Ask Kanye.

      • Amy says:

Oh Nicky, as soon as you said ‘race card’ you completely failed.

Good luck with all that ignorance.

      • annaloo. says:

        *Golf claps for db*

      • Teresa says:

Poor black musicians the Grammy’s just ignore them

        Kanye 21 Grammy’s
        Beyonce 20 Grammy’s
Beck decade longer in the industry 5 Grammy’s

Beyonce the true ” artist” 21 writers and 17 produces to make one averge album

Beck wrote , produced and played every instrument on HIS album .

I’m tired of successful “artists” tooting their own horns about their creativity and musical genius when they’re songs have no substance at all. It would be fine if they accepted their own music for what it is; catchy, entertaining, and fun – but stop claiming to be a genius artist when you sing about clubbing and booze and sex.

      • kacy says:

        @Teresa Agreed!

      • Kip says:

@Amy I cosign this completely, I think any mention of a “race card” is a call for a privilege check

@Nicky Sense of entitlement? This blog’s refreshing acknowledgment of the many -isms in our society is its main draw…

      • Kosmos says:

Okay, this is GREAT….good for her, speaking up!! Kanye has always been a bore and a tantrum throwing problematic artist. Why? I remember these facts about him much more than his music. After the Taylor Swift thing, I pretty much knew he was extremely immature and a loose cannon as well. Yet he and Kim trot around as if they are royalty, wanting people to bow to them. Honestly, I do not understand this at all. If she married someone like Kanye, what does that say about her? It seems as if both of them together are one big Fakery.

    • Wren says:

He really is a crushing bore. I’ve always thought so but this really highlights it. Small, petty, and spoilt indeed. Preach, sister.

      • Really says:

How are the Grammy’s ignoring black artists
        Kanye has 21 Grammy’s Beyonce 20 .
        Beck 5 Grammy’s

And how is Beyonce the true artist in this discussion

21 writers and 17 producers to make one averge album
Beck 1 writer 1 producer, himself and also played many of the instruments on his album , if not all .

There’s tweet comparing the lyrics of Beyonce’s songs and Beck’s , which was pure genius.
I’m tired of successful “artists” tooting their own horns about their creativity and musical genius when they’re songs have no substance at all. It would be fine if they accepted their own music for what it is; catchy, entertaining, and fun – but stop claiming to be a genius artist when you sing about clubbing , booze and sex.

    • Z says:

Thank You! I hate him two (along with Kim) and Thank You Shirley Manson (never heard of her but she right). I wish Kanye and Kim do a GHOST!

    • Gea says:

      Well said, Shirley! Bravo!

    • atrain says:

I originally thought it was somewhat funny because it seemed like Kanye was joking at first. A douchey move, no doubt, because Beck just won a major award and Kanye turned the spotlight on himself, but it was still a funny moment in an otherwise boring awards show.
However, after I heard his rant on E I changed my mind. It wasn’t funny. It wasn’t meant as a joke. He’s a petulant child that is having a fit because he didn’t get his way.
Also, I don’t understand why he’s so pro-Beyonce, other than that Jay-Z is a good friend of his. Beyonce’s album wasn’t all that amazing, and she’s not an “artist.” She doesn’t write her own music. She sings and dances to catchy tunes, just like every other pop act out there. If he’s so obsessed with the true art of making music, maybe he should root for some other people, too.

      • Liv says:

This. I loved Beyonce when she started out with Destiny’s Child and when she went solo, but she’s not that great anymore (in my eyes). Also it doesn’t matter if Beck was the underdog in the category. Every artist who was nominated deserved to win and it’s disrespectful and rude and stupid to think you could tell people that your friends should have won the award instead (seriously, even school kids know better!). I wonder why nobody puts him in his place, he’s insufferable.

      • lucy2 says:

He is creepily obsessed with her.
Even if he truly thinks she is a genius above all others, fine – everyone is entitled to their opinion, and music appreciation is subjective. But be an adult and stop trashing others in an effort to build her up, and stop acting like awards are the only thing that matters.

      • lirko says:

        @lucy2 totally agree…nailed it

      • MaggieOwns says:

        +1 to everything atrain said!

    • MCraw says:

Just because I love Kanye doesn’t mean I don’t agree with everything said about him. While I was totally amused by the whole thing when it happened on stage, I saw his rant on E! And thought… But this is BECK! He IS musical artistry at its finest! In his own way! Everyone knows that even though they didn’t know he had an album out. Album sales does NOT an artist make kanye! Smdh

    • annaloo. says:

They should just seat Ye way way far in the back

    • Jane says:

He does it for the attention. He married into a whole family of attention whores and he could probably teach them a thing or two about getting attention.

  2. db says:

Kanye likes to troll people. He likes to wind everybody up and then sit back and watch them run around. And they never fail to deliver lol. Except for Beck, he gets it I think.

    • perplexed says:

Yeah, I agree. Beck seems chill about the whole thing while everyone else is freaking out.

      • Petee says:

I think Beck is to much of a gentlemen to reply and he is probably not as chill about this as you think.Funny how on here yesterday a lot of people thought what Kanye did was okay but they hadn’t seen his ridiculous and crazy rant afterwards on the E! wrap up show. The man is out of his freaking mind and delusional about himself and what a real artist is.He is not even aware he is not a artist and doesn’t know anything about fashion either. He needs to be banned from all music awards.I do not know one person that doesn’t think he is not a complete asshole.

      • perplexed says:

True, he may be more of a gentleman than anything else. But that in itself seems hard for a lot of celebrities to be nowadays.

      • Pixelated says:

God, I love Beck. He also was recovering from a major back problem, I believe, so his album is that much more special.
Definitely gonna crank some Odelay tonight. Beck4evr

    • Sarah says:

I would agree with that except he can’t take it coming back at him. He’s going to go off the rails and punch a pap any second now.

      • Belle Epoch says:

Isn’t Jay Z managing Kanye now? Someone had him on a short leash. He performed one song – a ballad, I guess – and did not rant in the middle. He almost went after Beck but turned around (I don’t believe he was “joking” – nothing funny about his body language). His reward was being up there with Paul McCartney. I believe someone powerful is trying to make Kanye look normal to get his career back on track. But he is still nuts.

      • littlestar says:

I don’t think he was joking either, Belle Epoch. You really could tell from his body language! The look on his face as he puts up his hand, as if to say “no I better not because I realize it will cause a sh*t storm”, he had enough self-awareness in that moment not to spoil Beck’s win, but he could only keep it to himself for so long before blowing up at E!’s cameras.

Also, I love how Manson called him a twat. I remember “discovering” Garbage when I was in grade 9 and thought she was the coolest of the cool. And she obviously still is cool :).

Edit: Kanye is like Leann. Both have destroyed their careers through their behaviour, and neither of them have the awareness to realize that. It’s sad, because I do think Kanye is talented and I love his older albums, but I get it is his choice not to get the help he needs.

      • Hannah says:

@ Belle Epoch? Is he really managing him? He should really distance himself ASAP, everything that touches the Kartrashians becomes a joke.

    • OhDear says:

+1. If you (the general you) think he’s acting like a child, then the best thing to do is to ignore the behavior and not give him attention for that.

    • **sighs** says:

I really don’t think he’s that self aware. He married a Kardashian for chri$t’s sake. But maybe that’s the ultimate meta statement.

      Nah. He’s just an idiot.

    • Jessica says:

I think people don’t get that he can be dead serious AND be acting out to get people talking.

      • atrain says:

Agreed – he’s not acting out just to get people to talk. He seems to think that he is the utmost authority on everything in the world, and when he doesn’t get his way he lashes out.

    • littlemissnaughty says:

You’re giving him too much credit. He’s not that smart. If he was just trolling people, he wouldn’t lose his sh*t when he’s called on it. His behavior is so ridiculous that people want to believe it’s cannot be real. It is real. He married Kimmy for God’s sake. He’s really not that smart.

Love Shirley. That is a nicely worded bitch slap. She compliments everyone, Yeezy included, and still manages to make her point.

    • Pandy says:

Not sure I agree with the troll idea. I think he’s just a self-important blow hard. D-Listed had a shot of Kim looking at Kanye, then looking off (at a publicist no doubt) and then back with a smile plastered on … she really did look embarrassed. An embarrassed crotch jockey (that’s inspired lol).

    • Kim1 says:

I disagree I believe he is mentally unstable.I said the same thing about Amanda Bynes when she first started making “odd” comments.
There is a thin line between genius and insane.Kanye needs a pychological evaluation.

    • Z says:

Yes. Kanye’s a bully and I want to know why he did’t open his mouth when Charlie Sheen talked about Kim like a dog on Twitter a few months back?……………..I see he pick/choose he want to start BS with. Kanye nothing more than a lil b*tch

    • Someonestolemyname says:

YAWN, someone jumping on the Kanye hate train for headlines.

Kanye’s career is thriving. If anyone thinks his career is destroyed they must not see how much he sell$ All over the World.

Kanye keep on selling concerts, selling records and being Kanye.
Shake em up Kanye, and keep being Kanye because it sure sells.

He’s laughing all the way to the BANK.
He’ll Take this Controversy to the BANK.

Do some people Really believe that Kanye is not selling? , KANYE has crossed over beyond urban buyers, His career is Bigger than EVER!

Vogue magazine was one of the biggest sellers , he sells huge concerts, his earning power has been huge for years.
Kanye ‘s music is all over Europe, this guy is a huge star.
Kanye’s career is bigger than ever!
      Just Ask Macca.

He’s takes this stuff all the way to the bank.
      Love Kanye.

      • Annika says:

Doesn’t give him the right to b!tch when other people win awards.
Doesn’t give him the right to stage jump & steal someone else’s moment.
Oh, and Beck has been creating art before Kanye got started, and he still will be long after Kanye’s gone.

      • Janet says:

I don’t care how much money he’s making, he acts like a f*cking jerk. He’s always trying to steal someone else’s moment. He did the same to Taylor Swift, remember? That sh*t was totally uncalled for.

      • BaeOnBoard says:

In what way did you interpret all this criticism of him as being a statement on his ability to sell albums and concert tickets? We’re discussing his juvenile behavior and lack of self-awareness and brain power, not how much he’s got in the bank. Your comment makes zero sense.

      • Z says:

He may be rich, he may be selling records and sold out concerts but he slowly making himself look like a laughingstock and that’s not a good look. As you know what goes up must come down and he is on his way down. HE IS A JOKE!

      • swack says:

Just as a side note, don’t think the Vogue cover was one of the best sellers. I agree with others that it is NOT appropriate (joke or not) to jump on stage when someone else is getting an award. I don’t care who you are, Kanye upstaged Beck as Beck was receiving his award.

      • the devils parsley says:

Kanye is the most ill mannered, ridonculous, pissanty, squirmy, mind numbingly irritating, ego maniacal, sadly but honestly mentally illl, high pitched, smarmy douchelord in the music scene today. He’s an entertaing puzzle for those, like me, who enjoy spending their free time analyzing others behaviors. Especially special kind of crazy bad behaviors. Basically, he’s my favorite famous case study. I want a Kanye downloadable app game where players compete worldwide pretending to be Kanye doing idiotic s$$t. I wanna know which person on the planet can push the lines the best Kanye way. Who he’s gonna tell off for no reason etc…get creative w it. You get eliminated if Kanye goes soft or isn’t crazy and delusional enough. You get eliminated if you dont make your Kanye hilarious. You can dress your Kanye…give your Kanye random lovers, write your Kanyes dialogue. Holy hell in a handbag! I need a damn life…

Back on subject…who cares if Kanye is bank rolling it by acting like a constipated little bit o stupid? All that means is that people idolize and pay for stupid, que no? I bet you two of Kanye Wests many millions that we could get him to act like this for free. It’s a bum deal because I do think he’s talented all the way up his nose to the bugar…sighs filled with laughs…

      • Jane says:

What has that got to do with anything? The man has no scruples, no manners, no honor, no shame and brazenly brown noses for his career. He does have an ego the size of California. He wears his success badly to say the least.

      • Jenna says:

Kanye concert sells just 4500 tickets in a 19000 seat arena. Ya, his career is thriving, fo sho!

        http://www.dailymail.co.uk/tvshowbiz/article-2518486/Kanye-Wests-Yeezus-tour-woes-continue-just-4-500-people-turn-19-000-seat-arena.html

    • db says:

Kanye could be both unstable AND trolling, they’re not mutually exclusive. But I do not think he’s in full control of his troll, so to speak, there’s too much emotional energy behind it. I do think he was pranking Beck’s win, deliberately recalling his crashing of Taylor Swift’s win. I mean, he was laughing. Come on! It was very rude, to rush someone else’s big moment, but it was still a prank. Look at the reaction shots of the audience, they know he’s just acting like an ass. What’s more interesting is the level of outright hatred I read on the boards. Yet his appeal is broad enough, and popular enough, to sell his music and tour, etc. Which confuses me, frankly.

    • jujoki says:

As I saw on a comment on FB, “I’m just looking forward to someone interrupting him in ten years when he’s on Dancing with the Stars”

    • Dree says:

@db doesnt matter if he was trolling. Its majorly disrespectful and rude to take away another mans moment like that. Beck has been in the industry for 20 years and deserves as much respect as beyonce.
@someonestolemyname i too, think he is talented. but i am not a stan who thinks he is above human decency because he makes money. SMH at your comment.

  3. Micha says:

Wow, what a lovely woman! And absolutely right, of course.

  4. OriginalTessa says:

If it was Katy Perry up there, and he was questioning artistry, I would get what he’s saying. But, Beck? He’s an artist. That’s what he’s always been. He’s experimented with different sounds, and layering, and genres, and as far as I know writes, performs, and produces all of his own stuff. It’s like if Kanye called out Thom Yorke.

    • theoneandonly says:

Beck is the artist, not Kanye: beck collaborated I believe with latin musicians on something called Red hot rio 1 and 2. He is quite inventive.

    • lucy2 says:

Even if it was Katy Perry (shudder), he needs to simply butt out, it’s not his moment and has nothing to do with him. He can be disappointed, he can gripe about it to whoever wants to listen, but this running on stage nonsense needs to stop.
Can you imagine how he’d feel and react if someone ran on stage and grabbed the mic during his performance, and declared that someone else should be up there instead?

    • Ella says:

For some reason, I don’t think he would’ve said the same thing if it was Katy Perry who won. I think he still would’ve been fuming that Beyonce didn’t win, but he probably wouldn’t have dared to say it out loud about someone as high profile and currently popular as KP (or Taylor Swift, even though he did it to her before — that was back in ’09 when she was a new artist). I think Kanye felt he could say this about Beck’s win because to him, Beck is an easy target … he’s culturally irrelevant to someone like Kanye, who thinks everything is about album sales and popularity. Beck is older, low key, never in the tabloids, doesn’t do anything flashy or have an “image”. In short, he is someone that doesn’t fit in remotely with today’s definition of a superstar. So, I think that is one of the main reasons why Kanye reacted like that — like, how dare the Grammys reward someone who doesn’t really register on the “fame” scale. Kanye just can’t comprehend that. If it was KP or Rihanna or TS or someone huge like that, he probably would’ve at least understood it if not agreed with it.

  5. Clucky says:

What is his obsession with seeing Beyoncé win everything anyway? Butt suck much??

Plus, just because HE thinks one person should win doesn’t mean that is the what everyone thinks. I know he’s a complete narcissist but his opinion is simply not gospel.

    • Wren says:

I was wondering that too. Beyonce’s won a bunch of stuff already, why does it matter SO MUCH that she win more Grammys? He seems to think she should win every award ever, for the rest of her life. She’s not THAT amazing for crying out loud.

      • Mel M says:

        Agreed!

      • Z says:

I find the whole thing really disturbing that he rolling so hard for Beyonce. Plus I do not think Beyonce really care about winning

      • Josephine says:

I think it makes him look like a pathetic lap-dog. Beyonce can fight for herself, and if she needs support, she has a partner of equal power. neither of them need to rant. this is just about Kayne’s insecurities and neediness.

      • starr says:

Totally agree with these comments about Kanye looking like “a pathetic lap-dog” for Beyonce.

Jay-Z and Beyonce didn’t even bother to attend their wedding, so why the Hell is Kanye so intent on kissing their butts? It’s embarrassing.

    • Cici says:

Kanye was one of the producers of Beyonce’s album.

So if she had won, Kanye would have been credited with a Grammy, too I think.

      • Clucky says:

If that’s the case, then that makes him even more of a twat.

      • Anastasia says:

I just checked this out, and he’s not listed anywhere as one of the producers of her album. He did, however, start collaborating with/getting managed by Jay Z 11 months ago. There’s your answer.

  6. Tippy says:

If something doesn’t pass Kanye’s personal litmus test it can’t be considered art.

    • LB says:

I read he even gives up his own awards when he thinks he doesn’t deserve it (never his Grammys though). He needs to create his own awards ceremony. The Kanye Awards. the Yeezus Awards. Something like that.

  7. LB says:

Shirley Manson is a goddess. I need another Garbage album soon!

I know that Kanye later clarified his thoughts by saying it was on the Grammys and not Beck but he’s still a douche for a) trying to steal the moment from someone who worked hard and b) going on a dumb crusade and throwing words like real artistry around in a way that implied Beck didn’t count as a real artist (my favorite tweet on this situation was some guy saying Kanye was throwing artistry shade at a guy who plays fourteen instruments in favor of someone who needed four people to write one song). Just because Beck was kind and chill in return, it doesn’t make what Kanye did ok. It makes what he did worse because he put Beck in a position to defend Kanye.

But what can we expect? The world eats this stuff up (is anyone talking about much else in relation to the Grammys?) and enables this douchebaggery. And so it continues.

    • Rachel says:

I find his “clarification” invalid, as he specifically called out Beck, stating Beck needed to respect the artistry and he should have given the award to Beyoncé.

I just can’t understand WHY the world enables his douchbaggery. Why is he still a thing???

  8. smith says:

Shirley for the win and for saying what the entire viewing audience was thinking Sunday evening. Kanye has me so shell-shocked that if I see the man approach a microphone my innards withdraw and fold in on themselves. And I don’t even care in the slightest … I just do not want to hear it.

That top photo is beyond t-r-a-g-i-c. End of days type situation.

  9. maeliz says:

Singer of Garbage telling off the husband of trash
    Good job, Shirley. Congratulations, Beck

  10. Loopy says:

From as far as I can remember the Grammy’s always surprise with the Album of the Year,it doesn’t matter how much you slay. There have indie bands and all sorts of artists winning that had never heard of,I would really like to know the criteria for this particular award. I recall being so shocked when Usher didn’t win for his confessions album years ago.

  11. Sam says:

    Of course she’s right.

Kanye seems to forget that there are forms of music outside of hip-hop and pop. Beck is a huge influence on funk, alternative and other types of music that Kanye probably has no time for. Just because Beck isn’t his flavor of artist doesn’t mean that Beck isn’t a massive influence on music and isn’t an artist.

    • LB says:

Kanye actually referenced Beck’s Loser lyrics on his own song ages ago. So he knows what Beck is about and still ran his dumb mouth.

      • Lucy says:

This. The day after he even said something along the lines of “I love Beck, but he didn’t deserve it”.

    • Josephine says:

Beck also plays various instruments, writes his own music, and doesn’t autotune to the 9th degree. You know, like a real artist. I don’t know where these people get off calling themselves artists when most of them don’t write their own music or use their own voices.

  12. QQ says:

She wasn’t Lying, and I Love that unlike his petty ass she didnt diminish his talent she called him for the Crying Titty Baby that he is

  13. Amy says:

It makes me mad how this situation is blowing up (probably rightfully) since instead of having any discussion it just seems to be Team Beckonce! Team Beyoncé! Team Kanye! I think the truth lies somewhere in the middle.

I think Beyoncé truly did do something amazing with the release and production of her album. I also think the song content for the most part also showed an evolution and maturing from her. That being said she does have a ton of her own Grammy’s. She has been recognized and indeed stole what could have been the spotlight on another African American artist not exposed to the masses.

I’d like to think Kanye was trying to make a broader statement about Grammy’s and other major industry organizations recognizing and supporting black talent, but by suction cupping himself to one of the FEW black artists who is often celebrated he defeats his point.

If I walked up to Kanye and said, “What about Ledisi?” He’d probably bark back at me, “Who?!” And go on a rant about how you can’t know a man till you’ve walked his leather gym pants.

I also know a lot of folks will roll their eyes at Beck when viewed against Beyoncé and go, “Oh another white boy with a guitar won the award?” not recognizing his unique contribution and style. There is no robbery here. Two unique artists were against one another and one of them won. Music can not be defined by simply what instruments you use or song content or how much you sold.

Kanye defeats his purpose so hard sometimes…

    • SpookySpooks says:

Perhaps race does count in these awards, but Beyonce’s album was awful.
And the way they all laughed wjen Kanye ran up reminded me of the popular kids in high school laughing when the bully picks.on the outsider. Only Jay Z seemed bothered.

      • FingerBinger says:

Jay-Z looked mortified and then relieved when Kanye went back into the audience.

      • Jay says:

Her album was awful? So several magazines called the best album not just of the year but of the decade. And it’s awful? It was trending on Twitter for several days after its release to nothing but praise. And it’s awful? Hmmm well you know what they say about opinions.

      • Maggi says:

Yes. It was awful. That is my opinion. Completely entitled to it too.

      • StinkingDiamonds says:

Yeah, I’m glad someone also caught that. Even Beyoncé was laughing and smiling the entire time, Jay Z and Pharrell were the only ones who looked mortified at first, but everyone else was laughing and cheering Kanye on. Bunch of dicks.

      • Kate says:

I remember when Stevie Wonder and Elton John were up for the same awards. Stevie Wonder always won. When Elton John finally won a Grammy, he said, “I would like to thank Stevie Wonder for not making an album this year”. Of course Stevie Wonder was working on Songs To The Key of Life. Now if Kanye wants to throw a hissy fit about the winners in the Metal category, I’m down. Tenacious D and Jethro Tull…..metal really?

  14. Abbott says:

Shirley Manson: God’s messenger, Crimson Cherub, and captain of the USS Drag-a-B*tch.

  15. doofus says:

“when you keep on diminishing art and not respecting the craft and smacking people in the face after they deliver monumental feats of music, you’re disrespectful to inspiration”

um, isn’t that EXACTLY WHAT kanye DID? he diminished Beck’s art and didn’t respect Beck’s craft and smacked Beck in the face after he delivered…

    • annaloo. says:

Most people don’t realize that when they point a finger at someone, there are three more pointing back at them.

Kanye’s new theme song should be Beck’s “Loser”

  16. bella says:

i don’t know why anyone is arguing whether beck is an accomplished artist.
    that is a given.
we need to call out kanye for what his behavior was – rude, disrespectful, grandstanding, disgraceful, adolescent, bullying..
there shouldn’t be any room whatsovever for this behavior.
and why the powers that be at the grammy’s aren’t issuing an apology for not preventing this idiot from storming the stage and disrespecting beck is beyond me.
and why they are not issuing an apology for prince – the presenter of the award – for his rude, childish, meangirling laughing in beck’s face, is also beyond me.
LOVE to shirley manson for speaking out against kanye.
and more love to beck for being a class act – i would have gone commando on a**hole kanye.

    • Rachel says:

I can only hope that award show producers now realize they should either seat him as far from the stage as possible or completely ban him from attendance.

      Fingers crossed.

      • bella says:

        we can only hope…

      • GingerCrunch says:

        Here, HERE!

      • Ava says:

This would never happen at the Oscar’s .. Why because the person would become a pirah in the industry.

This a civilized society , can’t have the craziest running the show .

Kanye hasn’t been at the Grammy in 6 years, funny the year he comes back it’s the lowest rated in 6 years .

  17. tifzlan says:

She’s right, no lies told there. I’m not going to pretend like i know Beck’s entire discography – i was 1 year old when Loser was released – but to imply that he isn’t a “real artist” is low. From what i heard, Beck’s latest album was entirely borne out of HIS efforts. He wrote and composed the songs, played all the instruments and produced the album himself.

Kanye needs to grow up and so does the Beyhive who are defending him. Beyonce isn’t the be all and end all of music and yes, she certainly doesn’t need Kanye to fight her battles. I’d be so embarrassed if i was her that some lunatic keeps speaking for me when that might not even be what i felt.

  18. Shahrizai says:

Shirley is totally my spirit animal, and yes, she is right on. A friend of mine posted a summary of the writers for both Beck’s and Beyonce’s albums:

    Beck – Morning Phase
All songs written and composed by Beck Hansen.
    Beyonce – Beyoncé
All songs written by Joshua Coleman, Sia Furler, Beyoncé Knowles, Boots, Noel Fisher, Shawn Carter, Andre Eric Proctor, Rasool Diaz, Brian Soko, Timothy Mosley, Jerome Harmon, Pharrell Williams, James Fauntleroy, Mosley Harmon, Justin Timberlake, Caroline Polachek, Terius Nash, Dwane Weir, Miguel Pimentel, Noah Shebib, Aubrey Graham, Jordan Ullman, Sidney “Omen” Brown, Ryan Tedder, Chauncey Hollis and Frank Ocean.

I’d say that Beck earned that award without question. Not saying that Beyonce’s work is any less deserving, just that there is a reason why Beck won.

    • hindulovegod says:

Exactly. Beyonce’s album may be the best that money can buy, but Beck’s is an expression of his artistry, full stop. I’d rather see her live than him, but that’s not the award.

Kanye’s larger point isn’t lost on me, but Beck isn’t an example of it.

    • Nikki says:

This isn’t the best album for who had the least amount of songwriters. It’s just best album.

If an artist used a hundred songwriter and producers for their album…well if they still made the better album well then so be it.

Several legendary artists from Whitney Houston to Frank Sinatra have never picked up a pen or couldn’t produce anything but does that mean they should be discredited too?

      • Josephine says:

I think it does to Kayne’s argument that Beck should give his award to the real artist. Beck is an artist in every sense of the music industry. On this album, Beyonce was an artist with her voice only. Who wins album of the year is always subjective, but there is absolutely no argument that Beck isn’t the real artist here.

    • Jay says:

So the award is given to who has the smallest amount of songwriters and producers? Oh I never knew that. Hmmm

    • GingerCrunch says:

Thank you, Shahrizai! I just LOVE this. It is what it is, people! The Grammy’s are such shite anyway. The big song of the year was plagiarized? Says it all.

    • Decorative Item says:

The difference here is that Beyonce is an entertainer and Beck is an artist.

    • Ava says:

You forget that Beyonce needed 17 producers for her ” art”
      Beck one producer , himself

    • FlowerintheAttic says:

Someone actually has the last name Fauntleroy!? HA!!

  19. Talie says:

Beck was probably a bit mad, but now I’m sure it’s turned… the same way it turned for Taylor Swift. It’s benefiting him in a big way — his sales are way up, his streams are way up, and I wouldn’t be surprised if he is shooting the cover of Billboard or Rolling Stone this week.

    • perplexed says:

Beck didn’t even look mad when Kanye went up on stage. He motioned for Kanye to come back up after the prank was over. I think he really is that laid-back.

    • Anastasia says:

I bought his album this morning. If it weren’t for Kanye’s rant, I wouldn’t have known he had a new album out!

  20. Melinda says:

I commend her !!!! I’m so bothered by Kanye’s behavior. He should be banned from the Grammys. No professionalism what so ever. I commented on Kim article and I will comment again:
Hey Kanye – your wife Kim had NO creativity. The only “talent” this pig has is taking selfies, eating and wondering what two-piece outfit she is going to wear for the paparazzis!!

  21. Miss M says:

Beyoncé is a great artist. So is Beck. He has done so many contributions to music. If Kanye knows his craft well, he would know this too.

  22. Insomniac says:

That was the most epic of smackdowns. I especially liked her PS — Beyonce hardly needs this jackass fighting her battles for her.

  23. OhDear says:

    I like her, but:
    (1) Why is she getting involved? It’s not like Beck’s crying himself to sleep about it.
    (2) If she thinks he’s acting like a “small, petty, spoilt child,” then why give him the attention that she clearly thinks he wants?

    • jenrap says:

I think when one artists makes broad statements about artistry, and artists in general, it is appropriate for artists from every genre to join the conversation.

Hopefully more artists from every ilk join the discussion.

    • ccinkissimmee says:

      +1000000

    • jwoolman says:

When people like her make such statements, Beck can safely remain silent. That’s why. When someone has been attacked, it’s far better for others to deal with the attacker. It’s also a way to make it clear that the attacked person is not the problem, that he or she has a lot of support while the attacker does not. Otherwise the loudness of the attacker and silence from others make it seem as though most people agree with the attacker.

    • Susan says:

Why would Shirley, me or anyone even get involved standing up? Because Kanye used Beck to intimidate and benefit his own agenda. Kanye was hell bent to jump on the Grammy stage and rant no matter what award category or who won unless it was his personal agenda. Shirley has a step over me and that is defending the art she is committed to.

    • Josephine says:

I think she stood up because what he did reflects on the industry as whole and too many people are falling over themselves to excuse Kayne because he’s such a genius.

  24. Lis says:

She is awesome! That is the best thing I’ve read in ages and it’s about time!

  25. swack says:

What I see as offensive is that Kanye jumped up on stage (even if he was joking) ruining Beck’s moment in the sun. He has every right to state his beliefs (right or wrong or somewhere in between) but to take the spotlight away from someone else is wrong.

  26. Lea says:

There’s a video of Kanye at the airport where he’s asked if he thinks that Beck isn’t an artist and he clearly says that the part about the lack of real artistry was referred to the Grammys and that he respects Beck and his music. If only Kanye processed his thoughts he could really get his points across; especially when he makes valid points. I wish he wasn’t a jackass and I truly wish he was smarter about his choice of words and communication.
    http://youtu.be/84RCjYKCZuM

    • paranormalgirl says:

Yeah, but that’s not what he actually SAID. He said “And Beck needs to respect artistry and he should’ve given his award to Beyoncé.”

  27. IcyBlue says:

I used to be a fan of Kanye, now I feel I need to be a fan of whoever Kanye pisses off, just as a principle. Kanye, you should be worrying about your own artistry, because from the day you hooked up with your wife, she has overshadowed everything that was creative about you.

  28. Jaded says:

Can we have a new category of Grammy for the year’s worst behaved musician?

  29. eribra says:

Having a real hard time believing Shirley is 48 years old. Our maybe it’s believing that I’m 42. Whichever ,she is amazing

  30. bns says:

I love Kanye and I love Shirley. Both are putting out new music this year and I can’t wait.

Kanye is an asshole, but I hope he never changes. The Grammys would’ve been a boring mess without him there to shake sh*t up. I love it.

    • khaveman says:

Shaking sh** up. Wow — when did we become a nation of utter rudeness to others. I don’t want to see Kanye doing that again — and by the way, he’s DONE that before, so he gets an F for originality. Who lacks “artistry” now? He’s a douchebag and an embarrassment.

  31. so says:

    AMEN Shirley.
I hope Kanye will read this, but unfortunately, it will only reinforce his delusion of persecution (everybody hates him because “he’s a genius”, or because “he’s black”… ).
I’m so tired of Kanye’s shit, seriously… He should be in a psychiatrist’s office, not at the Grammys.
I feel sorry for his daughter.

  32. Ginger says:

Although I most certainly agree with Shirley +100 it seems that because Beck is being so gracious about it all that Kanye by comparison looks like an azz without anyone having to say a word. I however, disagree about Kanye being some kind of a “genius”. I much prefer Beck. I think he’s the real creative genius. He consistently outdoes himself with original music. And he creates every facet of it on his own. I think his Grammy was well deserved. But to each their own. Kanye comes off here sounding like so much sour grapes.

  33. Skins says:

Who declared him the final word on “artistry” anyway? I’d much rather listen to Beck than Kanye, all Kanye’s stuff sounds the same. What a tool

  34. Adrien says:

Shirley Manson? Beck? So the 90s are back? Now where did put my flannel shirt?

    • paranormalgirl says:

“Morning Phase” was a tremendous work of art. Beck has 12 studio albums, 5 of which were released post 1990’s. To put him in a ’90’s cubby hole is unfair.

  35. aang says:

Blah to the “Beyonce is everything” idea. Does she even write her own music?

  36. kri says:

WHy is he only interested in fighting for Beyonce? I believe that she is the only artist he has stage-crashed for. Hmmmmmmmm. And yes, she is doing fine in the music world, last I checked. Someone upthread mentioned Ledisi, and that’s an excellent observation. i would love for him to concentrate on his own artistry-he is very talented. It’s almost like he has to prove how legit he is by pulling stunt queen crap, but all he’s doing is making me forget how good he can be at his own music. He has become boorish, sullen, sour, and joyless. The opposite of art.

  37. Kiddo says:

I think Kanye uses Beyonce as a proxy to air is own disappointments /disgruntlement, since he thinks he deserves ALL THE GRAMMYs, all the time. Plus he loves the attention he gets when he plays this false ‘advocate’ game. I never heard Beck’s album, but since when are the Grammys the best indicator of worthwhile music? Haven’t they been criticized, from the beginning of time, that a lot of the wins are popularity contests, (maybe aside from Beck, this time)?

  38. Delta Juliet says:

I am not a fan of Beck but I don’t see how you can argue that he is a “lesser artist” than Beyoncé. First of all, art is subjective , but seriously, Beyoncé is what she is and as much as I think she is talented, she is kind of always the same. Beck is always changing which, in my opinion, requires more creativity than performing pop songs and gyrating on stage (and I say this as a person who does enjoy pop music).

  39. Jan Harf says:

Spoilt is my new favorite word.

  40. aenflex says:

    I miss Garbage.

  41. Katie says:

I’ve never been a fan of Beyonce’s music.

    • Harryg says:

Me neither, I just can’t stand her voice and all the mumbling.

      • theoneandonly says:

I have no incentive to listen to bey’s warbling when Diana Ross, Aretha Franklin, tina turner (listening to private dancer on my son’s stereo right now), etc are readily available. Only if you’re a tweener and listen to nothing but today’s pop would you think bey is all the sh*t.

      • Lucy says:

She did not do that song at the Grammy’s Justice … Her warbling and screeching gave me a headache … She has no death or range in her voice , she made a memorial song boring.

It’s all flash and presentation with her.

    • lucy says:

I agree that Beyawnce lowers the entertainment bar with her lack of artistry and limited vocal ability.

    • lucy says:

This post-Grammy takedown of Beyawnce and KryBabye aligns the planets for me. (from 2011)

      https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k7a3KdWWADA

I know this comic is not embraced by CBers, but I value how she isn’t afraid to say the emperor has no clothes and uses the footage to illustrate. I find it as refreshing in this format as I find Shirley’s more formally eloquent rant. Either way, the truth is cathartic.

  42. Zigggy says:

    Awesome.

  43. Dawn says:

Not that it will matter much to KanYe West but she was spot on and what he said after the Grammys and that little tweet of Kim’s totally make the two of them like two spoiled rotten children who find it cool to slam others . Kim was totally delighted by his stunt and found it funny. Until someone who is Jay or Quincy come out and sit him down nothing will change. I will say I don’t think Jay found it cute or funny or even needed. And I will bet you dollars to donuts that Bey and Gwennie had a great time slamming Kanye and Kim for their behavior.

  44. Coco says:

I love her. And she is totally right.

  45. scout says:

I agree with her 100%. Some folks think they are legends in their own minds!

  46. khaveman says:

Cosign to Shirley’s spot-on statements. Kanye is not a gentleman and lacks class, but I’m not sure anyone cares about those things. Oh wait, I do. I say get off the stage, you child. Let Beck have his award, and it’s not as if he gave it to himself. Attack those who made it happen, not the recipient? AND by the way, Beck is insanely talented, but in a different way than Kanye apparently appreciates, which I don’t give two fu**s about.

  47. manta says:

“Like, no, we not playing with them no more. ”
Ok, don’t play and sit at home.
So he really intends to spare the audience of any future awards show from his presence.
I’m curious to see him keep his word on this.

  48. Susie 1 of 3 says:

Kanye is an ass clown. If you can’t stay in your seat and behave, you’ll have to stay in the car or stay home next time. If everyone else jumped on stage too because they had a different opinion, how would that turn out? It is an award’s show to honor artists. Nobody cares about your personal negative opinions about the winners. You are not the judge. Keep your mouth shut and you’ll appear to be smarter than you are, have empathy, and can think of someone other than yourself.

Meanwhile Jay Z looked shocked but Beyoncé looked to be thinking, “oh, that’s so sweet”.

While seated, Kimbo looked like a porn star waiting in her robe for her next scene

  49. Triple Cardinal says:

Rather than rail about Kanye’s foul behavior–which will accomplish nothing–it just might help to take action: Boycott Kanye.

Boycott his concerts, his streams, his albums, his clothing, everything. Boycott him completely. He may not learn to respect other artists and the listening public, but surely he’ll learn to respect his thinning wallet.

And, FWIW, he’s so quick to “defend” Beyoncé because he owes a shitload of money to Jay-Z. Millions, from what I’ve read. Many millions.

  50. Tracy says:

Shirley said it perfectly. I can’t add another thing.

  51. Lucky Charm says:

I think we all know by know that Kanye just behaves like a bloody idiot. Also, learn to speak like an adult, using proper grammar, please! You sound like a 12 year old.

And why is Kim wearing a dressing gown? Did she run out of time to find any clothes in her closet?

    • CatJ says:

She told ET that “My husband styled me, we say this at the shows a few years ago, and had to have it…..” Barf!!

  52. boredblond says:

At first I thought it was a joke, although he seems devoid of humor..but his comments later proved he really was that spoiled, jealous, sob..intolerant of anyone else’s opinion. I notice he only bullies and belittles small people..bet he would never pull this stunt with a hulky six foot+ performer.

  53. Dancinnancy says:

I adore Shirley. And miss Garbage.

I downloaded Beck’s song in solidarity though I loved the Chris Martin version.

I can appreciate what Beyonce accomplished while saying her latest isn’t to my taste. In the same way you can say Beck is genius and perfect to take a nap to. It takes all kinds.

Kayne wants one kind – his kind – and everyone else is a poser.

  54. Josefa says:

Shirley said it better than I.

  55. Veritas says:

All hail Shirley and garbage one of the best bands of the 90s. Kanye is a dumbass that’s why he married one too. I don’t think he would like his wife to be smarter than him.

  56. Susan says:

Unfortunately one note Kanye is ignorant not only of other music genres but Beck’s career since age 15. Beck’s innovating music not only offered a new aged format but change of business strategy for artists control and music sharing. And I agree, Beyonce is well equipped to defend her honor. Shame on everyone in the Grammy audience for laughing at this fools antics rather than a big, loud boo!

  57. jlee says:

It amazes me that other artists think Kanye is a genius. He reminds me of this crackhead Peter i lived next to when i was a kid. Always hyped, babeling nonsense, w/delusions of grandeur. “I invented egg salad! I did! Whatchugottasay!?”

  58. MrsBPitt says:

Shiirley is awesome and a sooooo right! Kanye should be banned from the Grammy’s. He is a child, and a bad mannered child at that!

  59. The Original Mia says:

He needs to sit down and shut up. No one asked him his opinion on artistry or the Grammy’s. In fact, I have to wonder why he puts so much emphasis on awards. If he’s a true artist, then he should only be concerned about his product, not the accolades of others. What he should admit is that he’s a true narcissist. That he only finds validation in having the #1, the best reviewed album, the MTV award, the Grammy, Fashion awards and the like. Shirley was absolutely correct and on point with her criticisms of him.

  60. Dovies says:

    1. Bey’s album was Beyoncé: Platinum Edition, right? One of Kanye’s songs was sampled in it. That may be why he’s so outraged. Someone upthread said Kanye helped produce it. Another reason why he may be upset.
    2. I’ve never heard her album but looking at a synopsis, I’d say it was a stretch for her artistically. But since she had to put a bunch of other stuff in with it, like remixes, that kind of dilutes the creativity. Maybe she should do something completely different from what she’s always done if she wants that award.
    3. Did you all know Beck is a Scientologist? Xenu versus Kanye… who do you think will win?

  61. smcollins says:

“Grow up and stop throwing your toys around.”

    Yes! Yes! Yes!

North probably doesn’t throw temper tantrums as much as her father does.

  62. Irishserra says:

What would really be nice is if Beyonce came out and told Kanye to back off; that she can fight her own battles. But she’s too much of a git to put herself out there like that.

  63. I have always loved Shirley Manson, and I was obsessed with Garbage when I was a kid in the 90s.
She just somehow endeared herself to my heart even more, who knew that was possible.
Also, I think she’s aging beautifully for such a fair-skinned woman. And shockingly, 15 or so years later after her time in the spotlight she still looks like herself!

  64. Vampi says:

Kanye is a JOKE! It became even worse when he married the vapid, brainless sex tape “stah!” who is an even bigger joke.
Yay Shirley! The industry needs to call him out.
He’s a whiny, spoiled, tantrum throwing know it all who knows nothing, and holds his porn star wife up as some kind of Goddess and fashion icon and doesn’t see ANY value in her unless she is showing off her bits. Just listen to how he talks about her.
Gawd these two make me sick. And society is sick for bankrolling these wastes of space.
(Kanye USED to be someone I admired….but no more….no more. All he is is “ME ME ME ME and my attenion whore no talent fake ass wife!…..autotune and leather pants!”.. Soooo edgy. Pfffffffttrtt!)

    • ella says:

I remember someone once describing Lisa Maria Presley as “having a face like a fist,” which I thought was apt. And I think that is true of Kanye as well.

    • lucy says:

Oh hellz yes, “society is sick for bankrolling these wastes of space.” The media saturation of these megalomaniacs is doing a disservice to culture.

I think society will get bored of those who have so little to offer, though, and will begin raising the bar again just to try something different from such mediocrity.

We’re certainly stuck in a pop culture rut, though! This silly mess seeks its own level. It is passe and will be replaced with substance and actual craft and intellect and artistry. The mainstream will catch up eventually.

  65. oneshot says:

    Shirley didn’t lie, did she?

(she’ll always be one of my forever faves for Garbage)

  66. Anastasia says:

I never watch the Grammy awards, and I didn’t know Beck had a new album out, but I love him, and I heard about Kanye’s rant, so I checked out the album, and bought it this morning.

What a long sentence that was! Anyway, thank you for letting me know about Beck’s new album, Kanye! Cheers!

  67. lucy says:

    Caption for top image:

Sourpuss and his Drag Queen (trophy wife.)

  68. Anastasia says:

By the way, I’d be super embarrassed by this us I were Beyoncé. So Beck is supposed to give her his Grammy? So it becomes a pity Grammy?

    Yuck. No thanks.

  69. Iheartgossip says:

If he left the Earth today, nobody would care. Not even the ho-ho-ho he’s married to

  70. Angel says:

    Kayne’s weak attempts at bullying…

  71. Juluho says:

    Xenu Vs Kayne!!!!
Next time Beyoncé wins an award Tom Cruise will step on stage….
I haven’t listened to either albums and I don’t care who deserves the Grammy. But certainly Kayne-Imma-going-to-be-my-own-Xenu shouldn’t have been on stage. He robbed Beyoncé of the ability to lose graciously and Beck the spotlight.
    Some people’s kids… Smh

  72. Dante says:

Kanye is a arrogant twat and at this point, I have to say Jay Z and Beyonce are too. You are the company you keep. They keep him around so they don’t have to get their hands dirty.

  73. Tippy says:

Kanye West is petulant and mean-spirited.

He pulled a similar stunt during Taylor Swift’s VMA acceptance speech fairly recently.

Maybe he just craves the attention and controversy and doesn’t realize that he is perceived as a buffoon.

  74. LeAnn Stinks says:

I love Shirley Manson and good for her. West is a bunghole personified.

Paul Stanley of KISS also posted the following on his Facebook. “Beck should’ve kicked ‪#‎Kanye‬ right in the nuts last night and said Get the f–k off MY stage! The GRAMMYs ‪#‎grammys‬. He also posted a picture of West next to Jimi Hendrix with a caption reading “The difference between a poser and a true genius.” Right on, Starchild.

  75. angee says:

Wow Kanye. At first I thought it was just a joke and after your rant later I realize now that YOUR ARE the joke. Also, I hadn’t been aware that you are now running the Grammy’s. I hope you get banned from future events until you can behave yourself.

  76. Dirty Martini says:

I am 56 years old. I’m over this $hit. My significant music collection is dominated by a lot of R&B artists. I probably haven’t bought newly released music in quite some time. Having sheepishly admitted that . let me tell you Im about to go and purchase Beck and whoever this honest young lady is. Because candidly, KANYE WEST is a major @-hole of proportiuons not seen before and likely not to be seen again. I don’t agree with Barack Obama much, but when he called KW a jack@$$…….he nailed it.

  77. Victoria1 says:

I had such a woman crush on Shirley back in the 90s… but Yeah kanye needs a lesson

  78. Mrs. Darcy says:

Thank you Shirley for saying what everyone is really thinking about this twerp. Now please make another Garbage album!

  79. Lahdidahbaby says:

Just a few thoughts, for whatever they’re worth:

    1. I’ve taken shit here & elsewhere on occasion for my love of Kanye & my belief in his talent. Even so, I think he was deadass, jackass wrong from the moment he stormed the stage during Beck’s big moment. It WASN’T EVER supposed to be “a joke.” And even if he hadn’t shamed himself further with his remarks disparaging Beck’s genuine artistry, he was plainass wrong to intrude on Beck’s moment and make the story all about himself. That he actually went further with those ill-conceived, ignorant, and cruel remarks – AFTER he’d had time to think – was just shameful, foolish, and cruel.

    2. Beck was the soul of grace in his response, and it touched me more than I can say.

    3. Beyonce’s album is, imo, genuinely brilliant and transcendent. It reminds me of Laurie Anderson in her heyday. I thought she deserved to win, and I was rooting for that to happen, but even so I’m happy that Beck got that recognition, since quiet artists like him need someone else to point them out to the world sometimes and push them forward into the light.

    4. I wish this wouldn’t become a story about race. The music industry is probably the one place where Blacks are treated with fairness and genuine respect. Sadly, the film world is still behind by light-years, as are so many other segments of our society. But this was really a story about a quiet, non-self-promoting musical artist winning an award over high visibility artists like Beyoncé.

  80. the devils parsley says:

I’d switch teams for Shirley Manson. I get grinny when she rains. Stay complicated you goddess from my late teens…I’m slobbering all over myself but whatevs…

  81. aquarius64 says:

Well said Shirley. What a jackass. Kanye’s mom Donda West turns over in her grave.

  82. Melanie says:

I love Shirley. Forever and ever. Always appreciated her ballsy attitude and she would have your back, no matter what.

  83. Boxy Lady says:

One day Kanye is going to pull this kind of stunt on the wrong person and it will end badly for him.

  84. StinkingDiamonds says:

Shirley Manson is a amazing. I agree with what she has to say here.

  85. Goodnight says:

I find it so irritating how Kanye basically said Beyonce was a greater artist than Beck. I’m not dismissing Beyonce’s talent at all, but Beck has been around much longer, writes his own music and lyrics and plays instruments. That, to me, is true musicianship. Beyonce’s album was amazing, but I have so much more respect for performers who create their entire product. Beyonce owes most of what she has to her talent and charisma and incredible work ethic, but I can never shake the knowledge that she didn’t write the songs and isn’t playing the instruments.

    Is Beyonce talented? Yes.
Has Beyonce made herself a brand? Absolutely.
Is Beyonce a million times bigger than Beck ever has or will be? Undeniably.
Is Beyonce Kanye’s good friend? Obviously.

That’s not what the album of the year Grammy is about, though. That’s more a lifetime achievement thing. I was surprised Beyonce didn’t win, but I can totally see why Beck won and deserved it.

Kanye does himself no favors saying Beyonce has more substance and talent than Beck. For one thing, they do completely different things and have completely different demographics.

He comes across as so childish and petulant, and they way he makes Beck’s win about himself is just so selfish that it’s disgusting. I don’t listen to Beck or Taylor Swift but those were their moments and clearly he has learned nothing. How would he feel if someone got up during an acceptance speech that was basically the height of achievement in the industry to interrupt him and tell him he didn’t deserve to win? He’d be livid.

  86. And then there were none says:

Kanye is a complete twat, that is s given. What I can’t believe no one had spoken out about his absolute butchering of the English language. “We ain’t gonna play with them no more”….”we tired of it”…”we not playing with them no more”. Urghh!! It’s like listening to someone with two brain cells. He sounds unbelievably dumb and with little education. I don’t care how snobby or elitist that sounds. When you get on your soapbox and start criticising someone, then you yourself deserve to get criticised. I couldn’t bear trying to have a conversation with him. He sees himself as such an intellectual but his speech and language make him sound like a first grader.

  87. Yaaaa Shirley!!yess yess! Stomp on that petty twat!

  88. ickythump says:

@And then there were none – yes, he sounds like a punch drunk boxer…I thought it was Mr T in Rocky. I dont listen to Beck or Kanye but a real musician who can play instruments and write and produce his own work is surely an artist? Money cant buy class or talent (or brains) and IMO Beyawnce’s performances look more like what a lapdancer does than an “artist”.

  89. Naddie says:

This man needs therapy and meds, imediatly. However, it doesn’t excuse him from being a jerk.
Beck is lovely, I almost fell in love with him for this attitude. And Beyonce should make a public compliment about Beck, but what can we expect from these people anyway.

  90. Mika says:

Kanye is marketing gold! Before last night, 50 percent of the internet had no idea who Beck was; now, everyone in Internet land knows who Beck is……. that stage-storming of Kanye is a brilliant marketing introductory tool. I bet Beck’s album sales soared after Kanye brought him to the attention of the masses.

  91. Scarlet Pimpernel says:

The latest being reported is that Kanye “heard voices” that made him storm the stage … enough said, time for some therapy buddy!

  92. BlackBetty says:

This is why Shirley has been my favorite frontwoman for years. I fail to see Kante’s so called “genius and talent”. Besides making himself look like a total idiot. And selling out to the Kardashians.
