Here are some photos of Ryan Reynolds and Helen Mirren at the Berlin Film Festival premiere of their new film, Woman In Gold. I keep seeing the trailer for this film, and I enjoyed it the first few times. Let’s face it, Helen Mirren is amazing. Even if this is a sappy, tailored-for-an-Oscar-campaign performance from Helen, I’m still going to see it. It’s the true story of one woman’s fight to reclaim one of the most famous paintings in the world after the Nazis stole it. Here’s the trailer:
It looks Oscar-baity, right? It comes out in April, which is not really a hotbed of potential Oscar-worthy films, but hey, Cate Blanchett won an Oscar for a film released in the summer.
As for these photos, look at Helen! She looks spectacular, doesn’t she? I’m not even crazy about her spring-green Dolce & Gabbana dress, but I give her an A for effort. She really stood out, and she’s the one who looks like a huge movie star.
Speaking of, Helen was hired a few months ago to be the newest face of L’Oréal Paris Age-Defying face cream. The ad is pretty spectacular. It’s SO refreshing to see a beauty ad specifically targeted towards the over-50 ladies. They have money to spend on beauty stuff too, even though marketing largely ignores them. And I like the not-so-subtle message of this ad, which is “Helen Mirren is coming for your boyfriend.” (Just FYI, she’s 69 years old and I’m pretty sure she could have your boyfriend if she ever wanted him.)

A celebrity getting paid huge bucks to shill for a company that animal tests like crazy about inner beauty? Not inspirational, no.
exactly. She doesn’t even NEED it. And what are the implications? That women (even men) should never age???
Agreed- while I’m glad to see an older woman in ads like that, I very much wish it weren’t for that company.
L’oreal no longer tests on animals.
@Megan while they did make a no animal testing pledge last year, Loreal still conducts animal testing in China and Europe.

No they don’t. China conducts their own tests on all cosmetics sold in the country. It is a problem for all cruelty free brands.

lately i have been preoccupied with this one street photography blog that focuses on the fabulous fashion of older women, the ‘Helen Mirrens’, the ‘Iris Aphles’ of mostly civilian life.
though some of them are too avant garde to my taste, i still find some great ideas and tips. 🙂 learning from the elders in a fun style i guess

I wish all of these stars would STOP advertising for L’Oreal which is one of the worst cosmetic companies in the world when it comes to animal testing.

I’m so sorry to hear about the animal testing. As a 58 year old, it’s so refreshing to see a face cream ad that doesn’t feature the flawless face of a teenager. But I can’t support her choice, as much as I’d like to, and as lovely as I think she is.
I find it the right step when over-50-woman sells for othr over-50 women.
As for expensive cosmetics-my skin doc said once that creams and co. work only on the very surface. The rest is nutrition, water, sleep, sun block and good genes.
It that fails- there’s always plastic surgery.
I admire over-50-selebs who are not afraid of wrinkles (or gray hair for that matter) but I think it’s more European thing rahter than US reality. I think how Ivana Trump was shredded to pieces here on CB because she dared to wear bikini on the beach. And she’s a couple of years younger…Still a way to go …

Welp. Helen is only a year older than my mother who has a boyfriend a year younger than I am! Helen most definitely could steal your boyfriend (and my Mom probably could too! LOL!)
All kidding aside however, I was not aware of animal testing done by Loreal. I’m glad now I don’t use any of their products.

I’m 48, but when I’m 69 I want to look like Helen. However, I won’t be buying the product as I’ve been boycotting Lancome and L’Oreal for years because of their animal testing policies.
Dame Helen is an inspiration and she could take your boyfriend, easily. She grabbed Liam Nesson while they were making the Excalibur movie and he was much younger than her.
I think that Ronald Lauder, who now owns the Bloch-Bauer portrait, bankrolled Altmann’s lawsuit against the Austrian State Galleries. While I applaud Altmann for proving her ownership in court and forcing a legal precedent to be set that restores Nazi-stolen artworks to their rightful owners, I wish she hadn’t then sold the portrait to Lauder for $135 million. I don’t at all begrudge her the money but I do think it’s a Viennese painting that should hang in Vienna, rather than in Lauder’s New York museum. In Vienna, millions of people would see the amazing Bloch-Bauer portrait and it doesn’t get nearly that many visitors in a small museum in NYC.
I guess what I’m saying is that I wish it had been Austria, and not a New York philanthropist, who had bought the portrait from Altmann after she won the court case. Then Vienna could have displayed it legally and proudly. But Austria never had a chance to buy it b/c the entire case was supported by Lauder.
She’s so fncking awesome!
P.S. And in case anyone has heard that L’Oreal are now cruelty free (i.e. now that European law has banned them from testing cosmetic products, not by their own choice) – they are not.

While I think using older faces is a step forward, it’s not like she hasn’t had more than one face lift. People seem to approve when it’s done well and disapprove when it’s done badly.
