‘The Man from UNCLE’ trailer released: tedious or actually pretty good?

poster

I totally forgot that this film was made. It seems like The Man From UNCLE was filed two years ago, right? Right. Anyway, there was just a flurry of newly released material for the film, including a poster, a still and a trailer. The film is a reboot (of sorts) of the classic 1960s show, with Henry Cavill starring at the CIA super-agent Napoleon Solo and Armie Hammer starring as the KGB super-agent Illya Kuryakin. They’re forced to team up together on a special mission. The film was directed by Guy Ritchie and there’s bonus Alicia Vikander and Hugh Grant in there. Here’s the trailer:

My take? It actually looks pretty good. I could see where there would be a temptation to turn this into a straight-up spoof, in the manner of Austin Powers, but it seems more like they’re doing a straight-up reboot with some comedic elements. Henry Cavill’s accent work sounds really good too – he genuinely sounds American. I’m not sure about Armie’s accent work though. For most of the trailer, I thought he was doing a German accent.

The film doesn’t come out until August 14th, which seems like a long time to wait. Is it being dumped in the no-man’s-land of August releases? Because I think if this film had a major press campaign, they could really sell it. It looks like a charming spy caper. But don’t look at me, I love spy movies.

Looks good. I admit to having a soft spot for Armie Hammer after he was stuck in that stupid Lone Ranger film with Johnny Depp.

Don’t understand why they got two such same-y guys. In the original, one – napoleon solo/ robert Vaughan- was suave and a ladies man while the other- illya kuryakin/ david mcallum- was less sophisticated, touch nerdy, not suave. I know I’m showing my age and am not expecting a replica but these two generic hunks of the month are too similar to be interesting IMO.

      • Mia4S says:

Actually Armie Hamer does nerdy but capable really well! Lone Ranger was bad but he honestly wasn’t. Illya could also be pretty damn ruthless and effective when he needed to be so I like the physicality. Also I thought the “wrestling” scene was very Illya.

  2. scout says:

He looks better without facial hair, movie sounds interesting.

    • OhDear says:

Wow, I nearly forgot how handsome he is without the facial hair (not that he looks bad with it, just that without the facial hair he’s stunning).

  3. Brin says:

    I’m there.

  4. Jenny says:

Henry Cavill is incapable of wearing suits. His body is so weird. Like obviously he’s not fat, but he looks like he is in clothes.

    • Sry says:

      He still looks fine though!

    • LAK says:

He shot this straight after Superman 2 (or whatever they are calling it) so he still had big, bulky muscles from that. Like Ben Affleck.

It’s what happens when you gain big muscles. They don’t look good in a suit and you walk funny because your arms are held away from the body. Ditto the big thighs.

    • Beth says:

I am the opposite –I can’t buy him as a superhero and I think he looks ghastly in the costume. I think he looks more at home in this role playing an arrogant, suave agent, suit and all.

  5. Mia4S says:

Oh my God it actually looks good! I’m so relieved as thanks to my father I have a rather overpowering love for the old show (it’s great, but skip season 3).

August? You mean where they “dumped” Guardians of the Galaxy? If anything a move from January to August looks like a massive vote of confidence. I’m stunned! Pleasantly so.

    • Ashley says:

Yeah I agree. I also thought late spring and summer was prime movie time.

    • LAK says:

Yep. August is prime Summer Blockbuster territory. This is a huge vote of confidence.

It’s Jan/Feb that are the graveyards.

Come to think of it, despite the hype, 50 SHADES is being released in February. No amount of PR hype can hide the fact that it’s being released during graveyard months.

      • Jenny says:

50 Shades being released on Valentine’s Day had absolutely nothing to do with the quality (which is shit). It was a genius marketing move, and the movie will unfortunately make hundreds of millions of dollars because of it.

  6. I think the big months for action are May and June. Look when MCU movies get released–most of them have been in May.

But this does look like fun, and I never watched the original.

  7. bobslaw says:

Yay for Alicia Vikander! Love her.

  8. Kaye says:

I would probably pay to watch Armie Hammer read out loud from the phone book. He’s incredibly appealing to me.

  9. Kar says:

Armie’s accent sounds way more Russian than German to me! This looks so good!

  10. 'P'enny says:

This is on my watch list. I love the original sixties series and the odd film they did in the 1980’s. I love David McCallum the most, not sure why but he was attractive in a nerdy way, sounds familiar? lol. Napolean Solo, loved his name but he was a bit of a James Bond copy. But, I loved this. I don’t mind them doing a remake, and I am dying to see how it plays out, are they going full retro? I love Guy Ritchie films, well most of them.

  11. Twinkle says:

I think Henry Cavill oozes a lot of charisma in the trailer. He’s obviously easy on the eyes.

  12. Div says:

This looks surprisingly cute and Henry Cavill looks so handsome. Guy Ritchie is a great director for these type of action comedy films. Cavill’s a great actor and I always thought it was BS that he had to get so much shit for Superman since most of that is on the director IMO. August is actually an okay month….they tend to release the marvel type of movies in June/July so it’s actually smart of them to release it in August. February and late September are considered dumping months for most mainstream movies unless it is a quirky type of film that isn’t expected to complete much against films with a general audience appeal.

  13. Lucy says:

Random but Fun Fact: There’s a rock/hip hop/funk duo here in Argentina who named themselves after David McCallum’s character (now Armie Hammer’s) in the original UNCLE series. They’re called Illya Kuryaki (without the N) And The Valderramas (taken from colombian football player Carlos Valderrama). Back on topic: It does look good!!

  14. jane16 says:

The story looks lame, but love the 60s glam fashion. I might watch it just for that.

  15. Sigh// says:

I wonder if English speakers know what a German (or Dutch or Swedish, all very similar) accent actually sounds like or are they just going by what they’ve seen in Hollywood movies where every foreign accent is either Eastern European or a weird form of pan-Asian.

  16. Z says:

So this looks better than the typical reboot and I’m tempted to see it in the theater instead of waiting until Netflix, but what I’d really like is a spy movie staring the woman driving the car at the beginning. Mad driving skills, cool under pressure, spy lady. Yum.

  17. karen says:

…weird hearing an actor pretending to be Robert Vaughn…the trailer looks bog standard Ritchie…with nary a clue as to whether the movie is any good…actually…I fear another rocknroller coming up.

  18. Tig says:

I’ll see it with go fingers crossed-Pls no slo mo fights/gun battles, etc. If in trailer, don’t tell me!!!

  19. julia says:

    wanna watch it!!!!!

  20. delphi says:

I’ll see it, probably with my dad (yep, he got me hooked on this show from a young age, too). And who cares if it’s got a silly plot. It’s not like the original series was so hoity-toity. The cheese factor is part of the charm.

And hell, David McCallum is half the reason I watch “NCIS”. 🙂
