Matthew Broderick doesn’t care for long (theatre) engagements

Many people talk a lot of smack about the state of Matthew Broderick and Sarah Jessica Parker’s marriage. Personally, I think there’s a whiff of fraud about it, but whatever they’re doing, it works for them, so God bless.

One of the reasons I think their marriage works for them is that they really seem to live utterly separate lives. Sarah Jessica is always off doing fashion stuff, or making deals for another Sex & the City movie, etc Meanwhile, Matthew is content to do his stage work and have his theatre “friends”. Now it looks like even that puts a cramp in his social life. Her gave a recent interview to the New York Post (quotes via Contact Music) that he “disappears from friends” during long stage runs:

Matthew Broderick hates performing in long-running Broadway shows – because his social life vanishes while he is onstage.

The Ferris Bueller’s Day Off star – currently preparing for his part in upcoming New York stage show The Philanthropist – admits he is prone to fluffing his lines once he gets too used to playing a role.

He also hates shows upsetting his daily routine – but his biggest regret is losing his pals while he works in the evenings.

Broderick tells the New York Post, “The play ‘The Philanthropist’ is a limited engagement through July. I guess if it’s an international smash hit, it’ll run longer.”

“I used to do long runs, but after six months it’s a struggle. You’re repeating yourself… you go on autopilot and nobody pays attention to what they’re saying anymore. You screw up, then everybody wakes up for the next two weeks.”

“A Broadway show’s exhausting in its relentlessness. No more normal dinner hour. You disappear from friends. I’m starting to get set for it.”

I can’t even imagine how grueling it is to put on a show for that long, saying the same lines night after night. Why are actors always going on and on about stage work? But it must be nice to have his mornings for his wife and son. Maybe? No comment about that. Even though I totally understand what Matthew is saying, I still think there might be some hidden subtext in there.

Wow, it seriously looks like she is trying to kiss a standing, sleeping man. I feel the love.

This is one of the most unerotic pictures I´ve ever come across. It´s like a corpse holding a wax puppet whose dress seems to be tailer-made for someone else. I´m a Matthew Broderick fan, but this just doesn´t look good.

They look so unhappy together. It’s a shame. It seems like he has lost his snap, his ‘self.’ Good for her to keep booking great projects. I’ve always liked her.

  6. I would go to New York occasionally, and just hang out after the shows. I was standing there with this big Ben&Jerry’s waffle cone dripping with vanilla ice cream… Matthew Broderick appears and starts signing autographs through this iron-gate partition.
“Wow, it’s like a monkey cage,” I said outloud. He shot me a momentary glance, didn’t say a word to me, and just kept signing autographs. Of course he’s unhappy, he’s got people like me making rude comments after his shows.
