Halle Berry on plastic surgery: ‘it’s almost like crack that people are pushing on you’

halleberry
Halle Berry has a new interview with Yahoo! beauty, conducted by famous makeup artist Bobbi Brown. (Bobbi just did an interview with Jennifer Garner last month.) Halle is promoting her work with Revlon, and she name drops one of her favorite lipsticks by the brand, Revlon Ultra HD. Bobbi also gets Halle to talk about plastic surgery, which she kind of talks around, never saying what she’s had done (if anything, to give her a massive benefit of the doubt). Halle also says that Lena Horne and Jane Fonda have aged beautifully. Oh and she doesn’t do Valentine’s Day.

She doesn’t celebrate Valentine’s Day
“Here is the thing. I don’t really do Valentine’s Day. I’m like this rare woman, I don’t really subscribe too much to Valentine’s Day. That’s just honest. I’ll tell my husband, ‘I’d rather you make Valentine’s Day any random day in October, because you just want to tell me you love me. Not because the world tells you, ‘This is the day you’re supposed to profess your love.’ Be more original! Pick any other day.’”

Bobbi: And now you are a beauty role model for so many women. How do you handle the pressure? A lot of celebrities have done way too much to change the way they look, and I think the ones who have not done anything look so amazing.
“It is pressure. When you see everybody around you doing it, you have those moments when you think, “To stay alive in this business, do I need to do the same thing?” I won’t lie and tell you that those things don’t cross my mind, because somebody is always suggesting it to me. “You know if you just did a little bit of this and that, lift this up, then this would be a little bit better.” It’s almost like crack that people are trying to push on you. That’s what I feel like. I just have kept reminding myself that beauty really is as beauty does, and it is not so much about my physical self. Aging is natural, and that’s going to happen to all of us. I think of those women that I thought aged so beautifully, like Lena Horn. Even how Jane Fonda is aging — I don’t know what she has or hasn’t done, but she looks beautiful as she’s going about her way. I just want to always look like myself, even if that’s an older version of myself. I think when you do too much of that cosmetic stuff, you become somebody else in a way.”

On Aging:
“We have to stop wanting to look like that decade before. We have to stop coveting that. Let it go and embrace it now and really be OK. It’s easy to say, I guess, but that’s the goal.”

[From Yahoo! Beauty]

Funny that Halle mentioned Jane Fonda, because Jane looks natural, but she’s one of the few older celebrities who have openly admitted to having plastic surgery. Jane had work done on her chin, neck and eyes in 2010 and she’s said several times that she’s not proud of it. (Although she looks great and kudos to her for owning up to what she’s had done.)

I do think Halle has had injectables. She was looking very pulled and alien for a while (see the October, 2014 photo above, although many of you will disagree), but it’s probably settled for her at this point. I think she got something she assumed would not be noticeable, but it was. She’s also had a nose job, but she’s talking about facelifts here, right? The “crack” is the facelift and Botox and Restylane are the gateway drugs. She does sound like she has a healthy attitude toward aging, but she’s Halle freaking Berry, she’s always going to be gorgeous. Maybe when you start off looking like she does, it’s harder to accept the changes that come with time.

” It’s almost like crack that people are trying to push on you. “- I so believe that, it must be utterly insane living in a place where all your face and body are analysed and reanalysed by everyone, everywhere and where people think they need to be “perfect” … I would feel depressed all the time, no wonder so many end up drinking and doing drugs. They’re expected to be super, perfect humans….

I can’t speak for others but personally, yI agree with you. The amount of beauty, constructed or otherwise, that walks around LA is stifling. I am very glad I moved here in my 30s after I had kind of worked my you-know-what out. However, having never been known for my looks, it still leaves its mark.

I understand the addiction factor as well. Not only is it pushed and suggested (I have had people I have just met tell me that “the problems with your nose are a pretty easy fix,”) just seeing the results is seductive. My beautiful SIL (who was an actress for years) came by one day looking radiant, even more than she usually did. I could not stop staring at her and complimented her until she admitted “it’s the Botox – I need to get another round soon.” I have never been more tempted.

      • LAK says:

Miss Eyre: You are describing my LA life!!!! Resist. Hold out!! We’ll be the only 2 natural ladies left!!

      • j.eyre says:

Ha! If Mr. Rochester and I had disposable income, I can’t say that my breasts wouldn’t be back where they once resided (and back to their pre-breastfeeding-deflation size) or that I wouldn’t sport a “pert” new nose. However, since we are still saving for two college funds, I have gone to the opposite extreme – I refuse to even color my grey. I am so natural they put me on the “Oddities of LA” walking tour.

(Full disclosure: that may not be the only reason I am a stop on that tour)

      • LV says:

Haha, Jane Eyre, love your comments!!

Halle has had her nose, (I think) eyes, and breasts done. She hay have had injectables like Botox in her face but I also see some women’s faces getting fuller when they age with a slightly bloated look that she has here (these are women in my family who are not using any form of plastic surgery/fillers).

    • Emma - the JP Lover says:

      @Renee …

Halle hasn’t had a breast job. If she had, those ladies would be a lot higher on her chest. And once again, many black women can go a long, long time without getting work done on their face because our skin tends to remain ‘thicker’ longer. Ask the black women posting here and you will hear about aunts, sisters, and grandmothers whose face and skin remained smooth and firm into their mid to late fifties. And unless sites show the same photo angles when trying to imply someone has had a nose job, it’s a moot cause. In the first 2 pictures above, Halle’s head is slightly tilted to (our) right in the left-hand picture and is tilted down while facing forward on the right-hand picture. People do the same thing with photos of Angelina Jolie as well.

      • Someonestolemyname says:

Halle did have her boobs done ages ago in her early twenties, it’s in some of old interviews before she gained stardom.

She had a definate boob job and slight nose refinement, she just had very, very good work and early in her career, like some actresses do.

I believe her about the Hollywood or some pushing surgery like crack.
That’s why when stories come up with some denying botox it is laughable, botox is like walking to the car for HOLLYWOOD, most are having a pinch here and there, it’s no biggie to them, if well done.

Halle is still beautiful, but yes, she did have work EARLY in her career….boobs for sure and nose too.

      • Renee says:

        Hi Emma,

If you google pictures of Halle you can see that her breast got significantly larger in her adulthood, and this is before she gave birth to her kids. She was maybe a B-cup and then she looked to be a D. There are also pictures of her with scars in her armpits because she got them at the time that implants were inserted that way.

You can find pictures of her from when she was younger and she has a completely different face, her eyes are smaller and her nose is wider. She is still beautiful but it’s fairly obvious that she has had plastic surgery. And you don’t have to tell me about black women’s skin, I am black and I was referring to my black relative’s whose faces got a bit bloated when they aged but didn’t necessarily wrinkle. I do have a typo in my earlier statement, I meant to write she “may have gotten injectables” instead of “hay have” lol so that may have changed the way that my statement comes across.

      • V4Real says:

I don’t know about in recent years but Halle did not get a boob job in her early 20’s. You can’t compare teenage Halle to adult Halle. Some girls breasts continue to grow into their early 20’s , I know for a fact. If you look at pics of Halle when she was a beauty queen she had breasts.

All you need to do is re-watch Monster Ball and Swordfish and you would know that at that stage of her career those are her natural boobs. However I do believe she got a nose job.

I remember not long ago people were talking about how huge her boobs looked but it was later after that we found out she was pregnant with her son.

      • Someonestolemyname says:

She had old interviews where she admits she had her boobs done. I mean before she gained, Superstardom.
Halle definately had a boob job. I worked on Boomerang, I know for a fact she had boob job.
She had nose work a tad later, a refinement. But she was always pretty so no biggie,

Halle’s boobs are a boob job.
It’s not a big deal, but the woman definately had her boobs done. If you can still find an old 90’s interviews, she admitted to a boob enhancement in of one of the magazines at the time.

Halle has boob job, nose refinement and wears hair extensions and wigs when she feels like it or for films sometimes, no big deal, she’s still a Superstar and beautiful.

      • V4Real says:

Please produce the interview where she admitted to a boob job in her early years. Sorry, that’s the only way I will belive it. Because those boobs in Monster’s Ball and Swordfish are not medically enhanced unless she had them removed like Gisele did.

Also just because someone has worked with a person doesn’t mean that person tells them their private info. I’m not calling anyone a liar but I just would like confirmation on this one and I will admit that I was wrong.

      • AG-UK says:

I can tell you I am 56 black and don’t have one wrinkle and no Botox. Black skin doesn’t age as quickly. Although I have facials every 3 months more as a treat as its nice to be pampered. I would still like to roll back the years. Hale has great skin she is a bit nutty but good skin.

  3. LAK says:

It’s ridiculous to judge Jane Fonda’s new face as an example of aging ‘gracefully’.

  4. Beckysuz says:

She is gorgeous…too bad the inside doesn’t match the outside

    • Someonestolemyname says:

I always thought she was pretty but really overrated, never got all the hype with her. Something about her even in her glory days of good press, always put me off her. Not sure what, but never connected with her personality for some reason.

  5. Jayna says:

Jane Fonda was in her seventies when she had the plastic surgery. That’s far different that these women all hitting 40 and feeling the pressure to look better and younger.

I think Jane has defiinitely aged gracefully. My mother, if she hadn’t died, was always so young looking for her age and really started aging. It bothered her. She was older. And she wanted to have a little tightening around the jaw line, etc. I saw nothing wrong with it if she had lived to do it. It’s not like it would have changed her face like those weird thigns, just a little tightening and freshening .

But in Hollywood these women are late 30s and 40s when they started screwing up their faces and they all looked better before.

Haly is only 45 or whatever her age is, and has been being pressured I bet for years. And she looks amazing. She’s only in her 40s, but to have people making her feel like she needs to look younger, how twisted.

    • Sugar says:

Jane may have been in her 70s the last time she had plastic surgery but she was WAY younger the first time she had plastic surgery. She’s been tweaking for years. She looks good, though so who cares?

      • LAK says:

I remember being so disgusted when she first started tweaking because at the time she said she was doing it to keep her husband, Ted Turner. That was around when she first got her boob job and I think that was mid-90s. And when they divorced, I thought,’well that was pointless, wasn’t it?’

Her marriage to Ted Turner was during her 50s/60s and was very open about the various procedures she had done during this time. She was especially vocal about it because she was going against her 80s philosophy of exercise/diet keeping one young and healthy.

Anything she’s had done recently is in addition to what she’s been doing over the past 20-25yrs.

      • Catk says:

Am I imagining this? Weren’t there those bizarre rumors that she had her lower ribs removed to give a smaller waist?

      • LAK says:

Catk: I think that was Cher. Again, rumoured to have happened in the 90s although Cher later denied it.

Also do you remember when Botox first became a thing although at the time it was talked about as something Oscar bound actresses put into their armpits to avoid sweat pits on their clothing?

  6. JoJo says:

FWIW, I don’t actually think she looks like she’s had work done. Her eyebrows are lower noticeably than they were before, and her face doesn’t look bloated or puffy to me. She actually has contours in her face. The one place I think EVERY celeb has work is their forehead (show me a celeb with forehead lines) and their neck (show me ANY celeb with a turkey gobble!!)

    • Someonestolemyname says:

Halle had Boobs and nose done, before she was super famous so most of the photos we see are AFTER she already had some work done.

      • V4Real says:

Definitely a nose job. If she had a boob job it was not before she became super famous, it was after.

      • kibbles says:

Yep. I agree that Halle’s gotten her nose and boobs done. Her work is some of the best in the industry. Renee Z. should have asked Halle for her doctors’ info because hers went completely overboard.

      • Someonestolemyname says:

Halle had a boob job early, she may have refreshed it. It’s in a old 90’s mag, but yeas she was famous but not Superstardom at that point, is what I mean.

      • V4Real says:

Nope, not convinced of the boob job before she was famous. Even if you think back to that show she was on called Living Dolls she had large boobs. She was the model out of the roommates and they played up her sexy. This was in 1989. Also look at The Last Boy Scout and Strictly Business, she had natural boobs. Her beauty Queen days also reveals she was about a full C Cup. She may have had them enhanced since then but definetely not before. The nose is a different story.

  7. Chantal says:

She is married a Frenchman now. In his country the number one sex symbol is still 71years old Catherine Deneuve. Juliette binoche, Sophie Marceau and favorite Carole Bouquet are still considered beautiful and still getting interesting parts in movies. Unfortunately, my old favorite Isabelle Adjani messed up her face after Daniel.Day Lewis dumped her unceremoniously about 20 years ago.

    • lisa2 says:

I always thought that Isabella Adjani and Monica Bellucci looked so much alike. Especially when Monica was in the Matrix.

they have the same facial features and the same shaped mouth. They could be sisters.

If you look at pictures of them they look like the same person in some of them.

    • LAK says:

Catherine Denueve had a full facelift at some point. How do I know this? I stood next to her at a film screening. Close up she has the tell tale scars around the ears. And her face was completely frozen.

From far she looks amazing, and she definitely styles herself in a way that compliments her, but don’t kid yourself that she’s aging gracefully.

      • wolfpup says:

Aging gracefully, in my mind, comes when a woman embraces the fact that her body is dying, the fact that we have nothing to look forward to except getting uglier…that the dreams of youth lie in the years before that were lived fully, and good faith. All those years are fodder for great understandings…for *great, strong women*, and tender grandma’s. One becomes aware of the life cycle, and where one is on that continuum – along with all living things. It is all okay, our beautiful earth life. Old age is not about dying – but of living with passion; with certainty of wisdom that comes when there’s nothing left to lose – and one is owner of a matured vision. This is a time of focus on what one truly loves, after all…

      • Chloe says:

@wolfpup, I’m not sure whether I find this beautiful or incredibly depressing.

  8. Dinah says:

It’s because they think you’re cracked, that’s when they start pushing it.

  9. lisa2 says:

I think it is much harder for a woman that is considered very beautiful to age in Hollywood. Not because of them but because of how the outside world treats and views them. It is like the world looks at them and says HOW DARE YOU LOOK OLDER. HOW DARE YOU NOT LOOK LIKE YOU DID 10, 20 years ago. That is so unfair. People look at celebrities as ageless. Mainly because we revisit their movies or TV shows and those images are stuck in our heads. Then when we see them today the first thought is OMG look how much they have aged or they are aging badly. I see those comments all the time. For many actresses and some actors that people do realize that your 25 year old face is not the same face you are going to have at 40 or 50.

Such unrealistic expectations. But people need to look in the mirror and realize that the face looking back at them is an older one too.

    • Renee says:

That is how people are about Brad Pitt. And don’t get me wrong, I think that women get it much worse than men. But people drag him for aging and it’s like, he’s over 50!!! He still looks pretty darn good.

      • lisa2 says:

I know.. so true. He always looked younger than his age.. and I don’t care what anyone says.. this man at 51 is still very attractive. But people live to put him down. not sure why?

    • I Choose Me says:

I couldn’t agree with what you wrote more.

  10. Someonestolemyname says:

One thing though is darker skin tones have melanin and doesn’t age much if the skin is cared and the person takes care of themselves.

I have a aunt, half Danish-White , half african American she’s in her 80’s, people think she’s in her late forties, the woman has no wrinkles. She looks fabulous.

    • kibbles says:

Yes. Lots of women of color age very, very well. I know plenty of Asian and black women who look amazing in their twilight years. Some of them barely have wrinkles and look 10-15 years younger than their actual age. I think the melanin gives people an extra 10 years of youth that unfortunately fairer skin people don’t have.

      • Someonestolemyname says:

        +1000

      • Ginger says:

I’m a fair skinned person and I look younger than my actual age. My mother looks years younger and has a boyfriend younger than I am. Some of us just hit the genetic jackpot. My grandfather was 83 when he passed on and still had a full head of hair and looked like he was in his 60’s.

    • Lol. My mom is turning 51 this year, and my dad is turning 38. EVERYONE thinks that my parents are the same age (38), and beyond some eye crinkles, my mom has no wrinkles. She even had college guys (21) hitting on her when she went to college last year–she was kinda creeped out.

  11. GoodNamesAllTaken says:

I don’t think she understands the meaning of “beauty is as beauty does” if her personal life is any indication.

    • PassiveAggressiveSubmissive says:

🙂 … Yes more than a tad ‘ugly on the inside’…

      • Someonestolemyname says:

Yes nightmare. I’m so disappointed to see what her personality seems to be now. I think her manager hid it well in building her career on her way to Oscar glory.

  12. PassiveAggressiveSubmissive says:

I agree with her on Valentines Day… I don’t think she’s one of those ‘rare women’ those – the majority of women don’t buy into this commercial money sucking tradition do we? … maybe that is just wishful thinking on my part…

  13. neelyo says:

Valentine’s Day, or as I call it, Hallmark Sanctioned Romantic Day, has nothing to do with love and everything to do with commerce. My partner and I don’t celebrate it.

    • GoodNamesAllTaken says:

We give each other cards, which I like because we make our own and they’re funny and sweet. My husband used to bring me flowers, but I told him to stop because they are marked up twice as much as normal. But I agree, it’s an invented, commercial holiday and I don’t blame you for blowing it off.

  14. scout says:

Little nip, tuck here and there with great surgeon to look better is ok I guess but if you look like Melanie Griffth, Mickey Rourke, even Bruce Jenner’s face, sorry but let me keep my wrinkles and look fabulous like my grandmother!
Halle Berry looks great, keep it that way lady.

  15. perplexed says:

Maybe she’s had stuff done already, but her face doesn’t look like it’s sagging (or whatever other stuff is perceived as a flaw) so that’s where I’m shocked people would tell her that she would look better if she did something. Like, how much better is it possible to look?? I know beauty is in the eye of the beholder, but assessing her face from an individual standpoint with only a comparison to what she might have looked like a decade before, I don’t see what there is in her face or body that needs to be improved on.

  16. Micki says:

I agree with her considering Valentin’s day. We don’t celebrate it at home but I get fresh flowers weekly and any other small signs of attention to make me feel appreciated woman. I think that when these signs are missing people DO concentrate on one particular day and with high expactations.
However we used last Saturday to go to a restaurant with the children. The little one has learned to use cutlery properly and can wait now without too much fuss so it was a good occasion for a family dinner.

  17. lylaooo says:

did she forgot to do her armpits?

  18. Lizziebuck says:

Jane Fonda had a facelift in the mid-nineties. She and my mother used the same plastic surgeon at the same time.

  19. jenn12 says:

Forgetting what a psycho she acts like, she is stunningly beautiful. However, you can see she’s had some work done, so it’s frustrating that she acts as though she hasn’t. Look at Brigitte Bardot- she was insanely gorgeous, but accepted the fact of her aging. Halle hasn’t; she’s paying lip service to it.
