Sarah Palin: Tina Fey owes her career to me, should be paying me

FFN_NYC_SNL40thAnn_021515_51654875

I didn’t cover Sarah Palin’s whackadoodle appearance at an Iowa Summit last month, mostly because it was pure politics. Palin’s Iowa speech was so crazy and nonsensical, even die-hard conservatives were like “Whoa.” You can see the whole speech here. Sample quote: “GOP leaders, by the way, y’know the man can only ride ya when your back is bent. So strengthen it. Then the man can’t ride ya, America won’t be taken for a ride.”

Why bring this up? Because it’s like Palin is a malfunctioning fembot these days. Someone spilled water on her motherboard or something. While at the Saturday Night Live event, Palin spoke to People Magazine and I think I know what she was trying to say – that Tina Fey’s impression was great AND a political disaster – but Palin just went with a word salad jumble.

Tina Fey, Sarah Palin has a bone to pick with you. While on the carpet ahead of Saturday Night Live’s 40th anniversary special, the former Republican VP candidate called out Fey for not sharing the wealth.

“Well, have I helped her career or has she helped mine? I’m like come on Tina, you should be paying my kids’ braces or something,” Palin told reporters when asked whether being impersonated by Fey on the series had helped her career. “She’s so good, though. I really respect her and her work ethic and her capitalization, you know, on the opportunity.

In fact, Palin, 51, said Fey’s uncanny impersonation is so good that the Alaskan finds her own self being fooled by it.

“You know, I’ll do a double take every time I see her on a rerun or a picture of her,” the mother of five said.

And there are no hard feelings? “I think she’s great,” Palin confirmed. “I just talked to her again today and I brought her girls some Alaskan grown sweatshirts and hoodies. I really respect her.”

[From People]

“I really respect her and her work ethic and her capitalization, you know, on the opportunity…” Her capitalization on the opportunity? As in, Tina Fey capitalized on the fact that she looked like Palin? To hear Fey tell it, Lorne Michaels pretty much begged her to come back to SNL and play Palin and it really threw a wrench into Fey’s schedule at the time. Fey was already a well-established comedic talent too, so it’s weird that Palin makes it sound like Tina Fey built her career on impersonating Palin. Like, if there was no Sarah Palin, Tina Fey wouldn’t exist as a well-known comedienne? Which is utter crap.

Also: “You should be paying FOR my kids’ braces or something.” Not “paying my kids’ braces.”

Umm more like the other way around. She was never a serious politician – it was all smoke and mirrors for her to be in the spotlight. Tina Fey’s impressions just fueled that even more. Im pretty sure McCain has never forgiven himself for choosing her. She had a reality show for goodness sake!

    • jen2 says:

And I will never forgive McCain for foisting this woman on us. She is like a virus without a cure.

      • Reece says:

        Ditto.

      • Alice says:

How do I send a check to Tina Fey for assisting in making SP the laughingstock that she is among sane people?

      • Murphy says:

I kind of thank him for it because look-he was already losing, he brought her out and she went nuts-revealing to the American people how uncredible she is….what if that never happened and she slowly and more quietly climbed the ladder to a higher position-then we’d all be Effed.

    • Renee says:

I don’t know if McCain had much choice in the matter but I do think that he probably woke up cursing her and the GOP every morning for the first year that Obama was in office.

      • anne_000 says:

I’ve always read and heard that McCain was the one who picked Palin without the full approval of his staff.

      • Jacqueline says:

I can honestly say that I think that I would have preferred Palin in the White House for one term, if it would’ve meant no Obama at all.
I mean, look at what a yahoo Biden is.

    • missy says:

Yeah can you say delusional? Take your trashy family and go away. Tina owes you nothing. this makes me giggle. idiot.

  2. EC says:

Don’t think too hard about what Sarah Palin is trying to say. It will never make any sense and the grammatical errors alone will (as you pointed out) give you a headache.

    • joan says:

Don’t look at her photo too long either — she started losing her looks several years ago and resembles a meth addict more each time I see her.

While Tina continues to look great.

Palin will regret having an impersonator whose pics next to hers keep showing a greater contrast as the years go by.

  3. Clucky says:

Wow. Sit the eff down woman.

  4. TX says:

    Incorrect.

  5. Jag says:

If Tina Fey hadn’t impersonated her, she wouldn’t have become as famous. She would’ve slinked away to have more scandals in Alaska and would’ve barely been a blip on the radar. Tina’s impersonation blew her into the stratosphere and kept her in the limelight. She should be thanking Tina instead of saying that Tina should do anything for her.

    • Christin says:

Agree. She would have been a minor footnote had Tina not impersonated her idiocy so well.

    • aemish says:

Co-sign. I’m no fan of Palin but I never heard of Tina Fey prior to her hilarious Palin impressions — and outside of that really don’t find her that humorous *shrug*

      • bettyrose says:

Aemish that’s on you if you’d never heard of Tina Fey. She shattered a glass ceiling becoming the head writer on SNL. She wrote the screenplay for the now iconic film Mean Girls, which launched several careers. And that’s all before Palin entered our national lexicon. I wouldn’t brag about not knowing Fey’s work.

      • doofus says:

aemish, you never heard of 30 Rock?

because that was out for a couple of years before the 2008 election.

      • Bob Loblaw says:

Ignorance of Fey’s long career is possible but she has a much better resume than Palin does. Palin is the former governor of a state that has a population smaller than my city. Fey is incredibly talented and Palin is capitalizing on her once in a lifetime moment in the sun.

      • Christin says:

I thought Mean Girls was a very good movie (really timeless when it comes to outing ridiculous cliques in high school). That movie alone will be around a long time.

  6. Kiddo says:

I REALLY LIKE TINA’S CAPITALIZATION TOO. I LIKE SARAH’S FORAY INTO SEX TALK TOO, “the man can only ride ya when your back is bent.” GOOD ADVICE, TIMELY, 50 SHADES OF FEY.

  7. tifzlan says:

She looks so trashy. I don’t remember her looking like this during the presidential campaign. Where did it all go wrong?!

    • Esmom says:

She had stylists during the campaign and spent tons of money on nice designer suits. I’m guessing her current look has always been her default style when someone else isn’t helping to class her up.

      • PunkyMomma says:

During the campaign, an upper-level staffer described the Palins as “Wasilla hillbillies looting Neiman Marcus”. She (and her family) were forced to return the clothes after the campaign. This woman has zippo sense in style.

      • Bridget says:

Don’t forget the infamous $150,000 Nieman Marcus shopping trip funded by the RNC.

    • joy says:

      Real Housewives of Wasilla.

      • PunkyMomma says:

Actually, I’m waiting for this ^ to happen.

      • floridaseaturtle says:

Oh gosh, Punky…me too! I grew up in Florida, but managed to live 7 years in Wasilla, can you believe it? Mind bending. I will never forget the exhilarating feeling of looking out the airplane window, that 2002 March day, on my way out with my three children. We spent our very next morning eating cereal in shorts and bare feet, while the ducks waddled up to our sweet little FL apartment. Besides just the harsh climate, the culture up there is so different.

      • Anon says:

        Wasilla, meth capital of Alaska.

    • Cecilia says:

She does look trashy. And, yes, she had loads of help with her look during the campaign. But I think she has purposely upped her game when it comes to looking trashy – it plays really really well with her fan base and helps keep her popularity going. I found this picture below from 2008 (pre-McCain I think) and undoubtedly she is not particularly stylish in it but I wouldn’t call the look trashy. So, I think the trashy look is purposeful.

      • theoriginalbellaluna says:

I read somewhere that she bragged that whatever is going on with her “look” came from Bristol’s closet. If she had a sense of humor, I’d think she was joking

      • JenniferJustice says:

She barely maintained any respect re her attire during her campaign and that was with PR and stylists. I don’t think I ever saw her in any political arena w/out peep-toe shoes. I like peep toes sometimes, but not on a politician. Didn’t care for the short skirts/dresses, tight blouses – so much try. She had to tone it down during her run w/McCain, but my guess is she’s always tried to be a vamp.

  8. Lilacflowers says:

The arrogance and the entitlement are astounding. Fey had already had a successful run on SNL and had written Mean Girls, which was a success, and started her own show in which she was both writer and star before Palin appeared on the national scene. To claim that Fey owes her anything is ridiculous. And do any of her adult children have actual jobs yet?

    • smcollins says:

^^^THIS! Took the words right out of my mouth. Such a seriously delusional woman. Even if she wasn’t serious it was still a stupid thing to say. Gah…when will this fame-hungry idiot disappear?!

    • PunkyMomma says:

Oh I agree Lilacflowers. Tina Fey is not only an outstanding comic, but she’s one of the best writers in the entertainment industry. Palin’s ignorance is dumbfounding.

    • **sighs** says:

She isn’t fit to lick the bottom of fey’s shoe. Though she’d probably try if it got her more exposure.

    • Josephine says:

I deplore Palin and everything she stands for, but I really did think she she said was a joke on her part. Of all the hideous things to come out of her mouth, this one didn’t bother me, especially since Fey is a much more powerful woman than Palin.

    • Zan says:

Some of this stuff she has said before–about how Fey should help pay for her kids’ braces, etc–but the “capitalizing” part is new and reminds me of the time a couple of years ago when LL Cool J didn’t want some story about him to be part of a packaged special she hosted on Faux News and in return they released a statement wishing him well in his “fledgling career”!

  9. katP says:

*shudder* This woman is so delusional, I’m sure she totally believes what she’s saying. Sad.

  10. Pandy says:

Anything to try to stay relevant.

  11. OriginalTessa says:

Eh, it’s hard to say. Her impression was HUGE in mainstream culture. It really broke Tina Fey out. Would something else have done that? I have no idea. Perhaps. But, as history would have it, doing a Sarah Palin impression is what did it.
I can’t stand Sarah Palin, I get ragey just at the sight of her, but I’m pretty sure the braces thing was a joke.

    • savu says:

Tina already had 30 Rock at the time. She “broke out” years before that. She wasn’t even a cast member at SNL in 2008, Lorne just begged her to do it.

      • OriginalTessa says:

There are levels of stardom. It made her a household name, when before she was known to a smaller group of comedy fans. Starring in movies like Date Night and Baby Mama came afterward. It’s hard to know what would have happened, and how long 30 Rock would have stayed on air, etc etc. It gave her career a huge boost, that’s undeniable. Everyone, even conservatives, found it hilarious.

      • OriginalTessa says:

With that said, TINA should get all the credit, for being such a fabulous comedian and doing such a great impression. Sarah just provided the farcical material.

    • Tate says:

Tina Fey was well established long before McCain forced this piece of work on the country.

    • Lilacflowers says:

Fey’s Palin impression came four years after Mean Girls. She had broken out

      • Lucy2 says:

        I thought so, couldn’t remember.
When Palin came on the scene, pretty much everyone’s first thought was “Tina Fey has to play her”. So yes, Tina was well established long before.

    • Triple Cardinal says:

Original, I scanned your last sentence as “Sarah just provided the fecal material.”

      We’re both right.

  12. savu says:

    Wow. Just wow.

I watch 30 Rock every night before I go to sleep (it’s how I unwind). I’m obsessed with Tina. Let’s not forget she was the first (still only) female head writer of SNL before ever going on camera.

One episode of 30 Rock even tackles the political impersonation, and how sometimes it helps the candidate because it makes them more likeable. That’s totally what happened with Sarah.

Sit down, Sarah. You owe a LOT to Tina.

  13. OSTONE says:

Broad, shut up and go back to looking at Russia from your trashy back yard. It’s scary that this woman could have been our VP right now.

  14. als says:

I would hate to be Palin when/ if Tina Fey gives her own response to these “appreciative” words.

  15. Ruyana says:

OMG, there is just no polite way to say this woman is full of sh-t.

  16. DavidBowie says:

    Delusional, table for one!

  17. bella says:

    @kaiser
spot on with someone spilling water on palin’s motherboard…
    the woman is certifiable.
an embarrassment to the republican party and to Fox News who gives her a platform as a contributor.
christ…look at her in this outfit.
she looks like she just got back from a weekend Las Vegas bender…

    • Lucky Charm says:

She actually borrowed that outfit (dress, shoes and purse) from her daughter Bristol! Tacky, trashy and try-hard.

    • vava says:

lol, I loved the ‘spilling water on Palin’s motherboard’…………still chuckling about that phrase after reading the rest of the article and all the great comments.

    • Sadezilla says:

Me too! Spot-on, Kaiser. As has been said before, this lady (can I call her that?) is so delusional.

  18. Esmom says:

My big question is why was she even at the SNL thing? Seems like maybe Tina’s impersonation opened that door to her, too. Her delusion remains strong.

  19. GoodNamesAllTaken says:

I didn’t vote for John McCain, but I respect a lot of things about him, such as his service to his country. I will never forgive him, though, for springing this embarrassment of a human being on our unsuspecting country. We really didn’t deserve that.

    • Tate says:

What I can’t forgive him for is never being able to admit that it was a mistake. It is glaringly obvious to most that she was in no way qualified to be VP.

      • GoodNamesAllTaken says:

Agree. I think he’s trying to be a gentleman and not blame her for his losing the election, but he could do both. He could say I take responsibility for losing the election, but, in retrospect, she was not a suitable candidate for VP.

      • irm says:

The reality is that running mates are often chosen for PR and/or to fracture the electorate or make it a ‘more exciting race’. Obama was always ‘going to win’; it’s naiive that people still think we are ‘choosing’. We are given a menu with a predetermined winner and it’s subtly ‘sold’ to us. Palin was chosen b/c she’s a woman and and unknown that creates an interesting election run (more exciting/distracting coverage)—the powers that be can watch us figure out which ‘minority’ to vote for: A woman on the VP ticket or an AA prez. I’m glad the internet has revealed much about the political system within which our country operates; many people are aware of the PR, purposeful controversy and manipulation that takes place. It’s also as though everything has become celebrity now-politicians and newscasters included.

Also, Palin seems out of it and maybe she is on something, as others have said. However, I remember McCain during that election and holy smokes he was unstable! Remember how he had several melt downs on air or in public? It was quite strange and, to me, he seemed medicated. I was surprised b/c it seemed out of character for him. I may not agree with all of his politics, but I would have said he was someone who operated from conviction and was stable-lol.

  20. snowflake says:

Every time I see a post on her and see the stuff she says, my mind is blown that this woman almost became the vice president of the U.S. If I was a Republican, I would be like, oh, s*it, my party really tried to pull a fast one on us. Because looking back, I think they basically plugged her in there to get the female vote. Because she’s obviously not qualified. I think they saw that Obama was getting the majority of the minority votes and figured sticking a woman in there would help sway some of that. Because Joe Biden also gives off that wealthy entitled vibe so they put her in there to offset it. jmo *runs for cover*

    • Tammy says:

VP Joe Biden gives off a wealthy entitled vibe? The guy who rode the train to Washington 5 days a week while he was a Senator gives off a wealthy entitled vibe? The man who grew up very modestly, lived with his grandparents for a period of time, & family moved to Delaware because his father couldn’t find work gives off a wealthy entitled vibe?

    • CK says:

Sarah Palin was more than likely placed on the ticket because the republicans were attempting to capitalize on the Hilary fervor while showing that they could be diverse as well. On paper, it seemed like a good idea and she probably was a bit more down to earth before her star took off. She turned out to be crazy though and aggressively nasty and that turned people off. Joe Biden on the other hand gives off a folksy down home vibe while also being very knowledgeable about foreign policy, the military, and how congress works. In a pre-Bush 2 world, Joe Biden would charm his way to the nomination in a heartbeat.

  21. Chesty LaRue says:

I think she was just trying to be funny. Like how she tries to be a politician – and with the same level of success

  22. Jan Harf says:

Bi*ch, please. You are straight up on drugs.

  23. paola says:

If someone told me I look like Sarah Palin I wouldn’t take it as a compliment. And then I would demand money. Money to make up for being so offensive to me.
    She’s a joke.

  24. Miran says:

No, sorry. Tina Fey had a career long before you ever showed up, you delusion is strong.

  25. irishserra says:

Woah, she’s such a nut job. Take a good hard look at her. Can you imagine that she thought she was going to be in the white house? I can’t even fathom how she became a contender. She’s Jersey Shore inside and out. And I almost feel bad saying that because I feel it’s unfair to the JS cast members but how do you think America would have reacted to Snooki running for office?

As for Tina Fey, dream on Palin. She’s beautiful, talented and hilarious and she doesn’t owe you a thing.

  26. JB says:

Flames…flames…on the side of my face.

  27. BengalCat2000 says:

This woman is a moron. Is anyone really ever surprised by the dumb things that come out of her Mouth?

  28. Alice says:

I just looked at the pictures of SP. My eyes!! My eyes!!

  29. Lucy2 says:

She tried to make it jokey, but I wouldn’t be a bit surprised if she actually felt that way, that Tina owed her something. She is, after all, the perpetual victim!

  30. Anniefannie says:

My favorite response to Palin’s indecipherable Iowa speech was by Bill Maher on Real time he said ” Palin’s speech delivery raises a troubling concern, how will anyone know if she’s had a stroke?!”

  31. Jaded says:

Let’s put together some “Sarah Palin is so stupid that…..” jokes. OK? I’ll start:

Sarah Palin is so stupid that…she’d f*ck up a 2 person funeral procession.

    Next!

  32. the blonde one says:

I would very much like to see the results of a drug test on this woman. Not even kidding or snark. She’s a cokehead.

  33. OhDear says:

Oh dear. What was that term for embarrassment that one feels for another again?

  34. irm says:

Yes, Fey was/is successful apart from the palin skit on snl. But…what’s wrong with ‘pay FOR my kids’ braces’? Pay my kids’ braces is correct grammar? I did not know that…Sometimes, the English language does allow for two different correct answers, though. And people will correct the other version nonetheless. I would have said ‘pay for’. That’s common phrasing. Wasn’t clear on the point of this distinction in the OP?

    • anne_000 says:

From the excerpt with the blue background:

“I’m like come on Tina, you should be paying my kids’ braces or something,” Palin told reporters…”

Kaiser wrote that Palin should have said “paying FOR my kids’ braces…”

    • Bob Loblaw says:

“…paying my kids braces…” is incorrect because it implies the payment would go to the braces, no one pays the braces, we pay the dentist. We would say “…paying for my kids braces…” about the payment.

  35. Jellybean says:

So does that mean all impersonators should be paying the person who they are acting like?

I do think this was plains attempt to be funny…

  36. Christin says:

I agree with the part where she acknowledges Tina does a spot on impression. When the first skit was shown on the news, my father could not believe it was another woman impersonating Sarah.

    • doofus says:

my dad had the same impression when he saw Dana Carvey do GHW Bush.

      • Christin says:

Dana was another great political impersonator. I watched his Bush skits during the SNL marathon, along with Phil Hartman in the Clinton jogging to McD’s skit. Such great impersonations!

      • doofus says:

oh, that Phil Hartman as Clinton jogging to McD’s was one of the FUNNIEST skits they did.

        I miss Phil Hartman SO MUCH… 🙁

  37. kri says:

Why is Palin dressed like the house mom at a strip club? Oh my god, that outfits is just beyond any 80’s hair-band obsessed groupie. She looks like she is going to a Rat reunion show.

  38. scout says:

She should have borrowed Kanye’s latest designer body stocking and walked around! Delusional birds of feather should flock together.

  39. LALA says:

The audacity and gall of some people….smh

  40. anne_000 says:

“I brought her girls some Alaskan grown sweatshirts and hoodies.”

Who knew that sweatshirts and hoodies are “grown?” Is there some kind of magic seeds or some kind of breeding done in a barn somewhere?

Palin’s fame was extended by Fey’s performances. But it’s just like Palin not to be realistic and be grateful to anybody else. It shows how big her ego is.

  41. AntiSocialButterfly says:

Just another example of her raging narcissism- she is the center of her own universe, after all.

As far as the error in the braces comments, I chalk it up to the fact that none of her kids had them, because it never entered her head that they might benefit from orthodontia. Again, that whole center of her universe thing.

It was only after the fact that her special needs child was noted to not be wearing glasses (or getting therapy, apparently) during his toddlerhood that she posted a picture of him in glasses- that appeared to belong to someone else based on the inappropriate size and style for a child.

    The stupid. It hurts.

  42. Donna says:

    Hooters Opaque Hose. Dear lordie.

  43. bettyrose says:

I really hope Tina Fey isn’t reading this thread. She broke one of the thickest glass ceilings in entertainment becoming the first female head writer of SNL (in 1999). 30 Rock was her brainchild based on that — yet there are people besides Palin who truly think the Palin parody was her breakout? * facepalm *

  44. Ice Queen says:

    Please STFU! She’s delusional.

  45. ek says:

Also, that “dress” is hideous and totally age-inappropriate (isn’t it Bristol’s?), and does she have tan panty hose on? BLARRRRGGGGGG.

  46. Maureen says:

God, I can’t stand her. I’m Alaskan, and travelled to the lower 48 after the election, and the questions I was asked! It was embarrassing to say the least. The worst were the people who agreed with her weird ass opinions, I had no idea what to say.

Now she looks like a Real Housewives of Wasilla candidate. Nice tan, Sarah-you managed that in our tropical winters, no doubt.

I just wish she would go away!!

  47. ike says:

Scary thinking that this idiot could have been a heart attack away from being PRESIDENT!!!

  48. Lily says:

Not a Palin fan, but Tina Fey has said that before she impersonated Palin she could walk down the street. After, she was everywhere, and no longer anonymous. So, it’s not a huge jump for Palin to say that. I’m sure Fey would have been fine without that opportunity, but I just wanted to point out that she herself sees it as a turning point in her career, and celebrity and visibility.

    • Neonscream says:

There is a difference between career success and celebrity. Plenty of actors/musicians etc are wildly successful and can still walk down a street if not always unrecognised certainly without people stopping them or taking photos. Other people who really can’t be said to have had any career success, numerous reality show contestants for example, can’t walk down the street anonymously. Fey acknowledged it increased her recognisability amongst the type of people who can’t walk past someone who’s been on TV without hyperventilating but it did very little in terms of her actual career.

  49. Coblu says:

    Shut up, Sarah…………

  50. unicorn says:

I’m sorry but I kept shaking my head and wondering what I was missing that Sarah Palin kept popping up in SNL 40th???? I know I haven’t watched the show for many, many years (when it stopped being as funny as it used to be in the 80’s, early 90’s) but why was she on again?? Just because of an old skit??
