Victoria Beckham on her clothing line: ‘I know how women want to look’

Victoria Beckham

Victoria Beckham’s family sat front row to support her for New York fashion week. I’m impressed with how David supports all of Victoria’s fashion endeavors. He should do that, and he doesn’t deserve a medal or anything. But how many retired professional athletes would do the same? Not many. David is genuinely proud of his wife. Oh, and Harper Seven is three years old now! DListed has a photo of adorable Harper juxtaposed next to scary Anna Wintour.

VB’s done the publicity rounds en masse. She spoke with the New York Times in a video interview. Her new London offices are gorgeous. Victoria talked about her need to streamline and use minimal decor at work because she’s so “messy” at home. She also has a new interview with The Independent, which ends with this sentence: “As always with Victoria Beckham, when she talks about her brand, you get the feeling she’s talking about herself.” That’s some serious shade. VB talks about why she’s qualified to dress women:

On her progress: “I have a different way of expressing myself because I haven’t had that formal training. I’ve learnt a lot, in the last seven years. I’ve learnt a lot very, very quickly. And I continue to learn. When I first started, I used to wear lots of tight dresses. Lots of heels. And I do still dress like that, but I suppose as time has gone on, I’ve loosened up a little bit. I spend a lot of time in my shop, talking to my customer, finding out what she wants. Times change. Certain things I wore then felt right then. But it wouldn’t feel right now.”

VB’s connection to women: “Even if I wouldn’t wear something myself, I think I know how women feel, how women want to look. I can really relate to women, I get on very well with women … Some women don’t. I want to empower women, make women feel the best version of themselves.” Her models “are 5ft 11in — but they’re women, too. Maybe a lot of people aren’t going to be nice about models for the obvious reason … I mean, we look at models and say, ‘Oh, she’s so pretty! She’s got a great body! Good for her!’ Some people might think … ‘Cow!'”

Her changing personal style: “As you get older, you get a different kind of confidence. I’m busier now — so I couldn’t totter around in a tight dress and a pair of heels! I think I feel a little more relaxed. I suppose if I’m being honest, I would have been scared, right at the beginning, to wear lots of layers and to wear a flat shoe. I would have been scared to do that. Now I’m not.”

[From The Independent]

If you read the whole interview, it’s obvious the journo isn’t enthused about Victoria as creative director of her own line. I get it, but the journo was rude. VB doesn’t design her own clothes, although she’s heavily involved in saying what she wants and trying everything on herself. The clothes aren’t fashion forward, but they reflect current styles. I’ve included some runway examples in the gallery. The new line favors muted colors, color blocking, asymmetrical hemlines, and drapey, twisted fabrics. The ideas aren’t completely original, but the clothes are still nice quality.

Here’s a quick flashback to how VB dressed in 2008 — this is one of the only photos where her rack wasn’t on display. What a change!

Well I must admit I like her clothes now a lot better than the way she dressed say 10 years ago.
I respect her efforts to build a name for herself and refuse to be reduced to “wife of David Beckam”…
I don’t know the sizes of her line but think that her clothes fit into everyday life very well.

    • wonderwoman21 says:

She’s was a Spice Girl before she was Mrs. David Beckham; I think of Beckham as Mr. Spice Girl 😝

    • Micki says:

Yes, I know and still I can think only of her and Robbie Williams, who managed to become high profile names after their bands did not exist any longer. She can’t sing for toffee but is still a designer where others failed (Katie Holmes)

  2. kcarp says:

Harper is gorgeous!! The all black on her looks comfortable, not like an attempt to put pleather over a diaper.

    • Sarah says:

Anna Wintour seems to be smiling at her too. Probably thinking that Kimye could take some parenting lessons from the Beckhams. Of course the Beckhams would have to deign to speak to them first…..

  3. Bliss says:

I always liked her. She seems sweet.

  4. kri says:

Oh my god she’s wearing layers!! My eyes, my soul please help me!! Jesus. Who would ever have thought wearing flats and layers was that soul-wrenching?

    • Jen43 says:

Haha. I know, but layers add inches or, in her case, centimeters. And flats don’t elongate your line. I have never seen her dressed like that. She actually looks comfortable.

    • moi says:

i think she meant that earlier, she always wanted to be sexy and look thin, and now she just doesn’t care anymore, trying to have fun with fashion, layers, and be comfortable

      • WardLittell says:

Yes indeed: last summer she stepped out in a voluminous psychedelic/floral tent dress with amazing 1970s style clumpy platform sandals, a look every man on earth would abhor. She looked completely fabulous, imo.

She’s the antidote to Robert Cavalli, and as such should immediately be made a Dame!

      • Kiddo says:

@WardLittell, I love your name and enthusiasm. It’s catching.
*I’m doing an action pose, right now, in your honor*

      • WardLittell says:

        Yowza, Kiddo!
Solid gold action there, most beguiling. πŸ™‚

  5. scout says:

Harper is so cute. Look at Anna Wintour woman looking at her adoringly, unlike with North and Kim next to her. She looked like wanted to run away from them last time. lol.

I like VK’s design but I don’t want to look miserable like her at all, she always looks like something stuck inbetween her you know what!

  6. jujoki says:

She’s great and she’s managed to make a brand from herself in a classy way (opposite to other examples, let’s say, the Kardashian klan) Her clothes are beautiful and wearable.
    love them!

    • WardLittell says:

VB fans: get a bit of her fash vibe with the two nail varnishes under her name by NailsInc.: Judo Red and Bamboo White. Gahhd, they are perfect. (And the heavy, streamlined glass bottles are worth the dosh alone.)

  7. JB says:

I actually really like her. Always have. And, to be fair, I have a lot of entrepreneurial friends who are fond of going on about their “brand” and their “ideal customer” and they are always – 100%, across the board – describing themselves. Doesn’t make their businesses any less valid or relatable. Everyone does what they know best and I respect Victoria for owning that.

  8. TX says:

Yeah, the journo was super rude. So what if shes not the second coming of McQueen? She never said she was or tried to be. Because she is honest about what she does, it doesnt bother me at all. Its people like Kanye who drive me nuts. Please dont pretend you are a fashion phenom and give me sweatshirts (with the help of 30 stylists).

  9. maeliz says:

She’s got a beautiful family. That’s how you’re supposed to dress a little girl.

  10. Hudson Girl says:

What in the hell is Anna Wintour wearing at VB’s fashion show??!!

  11. Dawn says:

I love her clothes. They are wearable for everyday people like myself! I don’t believe that she makes her clothes for skinny people only like some designers. What a great collection. The Beckham kids are always so well behaved in public and that little Harper is as cute as a bug in a rug!

  12. Tiffany says:

I like VB, then she did a show about the family’s move to LA with DB signed with the Galaxy, then I LOVE VB. That woman has a wicked sense of humor.

Also, those kids are going to be heartbreakers. Adorbs.

  13. WardLittell says:

I love her to bits, and her clothing line too. (I dress in COS a lot, which is the closest I can get to VB!)
She’s never been a smiley, camera-happy person, but she’s a genuine sweetie really. I loved how she’s honest about her progression, admitting to limits but also clearly delighted that she’s able to share her fashion enthusiasm like this, and how she digs having a subject about which she can speak so knowledgeably. She charms me every time.
Did you all see Harper at the airport in her Anita Pallenberg hat? Fabulous and fun.
    Such a delightful family. πŸ™‚

  14. Veronica says:

Confession: I actually really like her line and find it a lot more wearable than a lot of stuff out there. If I had that kind of disposable income, I’d own some of it, particularly the work wear. Her fashion evolution has been interesting, even if she does take herself too seriously.

  15. jenn12 says:

I kind of like her; she’s self aware and funny. And while you don’t get a medal for supporting your spouse, it’s nice to recognize it, because not everyone does.

  16. Malificent says:

Now I’m going to spend the rest of the day trying to figure out what “fear of flat shoes” is in Greek…. Loaferphobia? Pedophobia sensibilia?

  17. Anny says:

I like her. She made a good career for herself plus I would totally wear her clothes. She seems like a good person. Plus I really like how she talks about constantly learning and lacking formal training. Refreshing honesty compared to Kanye’s “I am a genius” schtick

  18. Eleonor says:

I like her clothing line, it’s something I could go out dressed like that.

  19. Tracy says:

I hope Victoria or David reads this.

A few years ago, (2009?), I was living in London and had the opportunity to go to the Wimbledon finals and sit in my company’s quite fancy box, right behind the royal box. David Beckham and two of his sons were sittings in the seats just in front of me, across an aisle the public could walk down. I don’t even remember who played, much less won those matches, but I remember this: David and his boys were interrupted by some adoring fan every five minutes –for hours and hours, nonstop. People wanting to chat, wanting an autograph, wanting a picture…wanting something. And while it was obvious all David wanted was to be left alone for a nice day out with the boys, he was unfailingly polite to each and every person, and even more impressive, his boys could not have been better mannered. With no prompting from Dad, they stood and turned to smile and shake hands with countless people, never complaining and being incredibly gracious. David never told them what to do (I was less than 10 feet from them for four hours), and just had a lovely, relaxed banter with them all afternoon.

That kind of politeness and beautiful public manners speaks volumes to how Victoria and David run their family. That behavior isn’t something you coach in the car while headed to the stadium. Those darn kids were incredible and it was as natural to them as breathing. I’ve never forgotten it.

  20. It’s weird to see her WAG look and to see her school marm look now. She’s really toned it down. I don’t think I’ve seen pap photos of her in at least a year? She really wants that Vogue cover huh? Obviously Anna doesn’t hate her anymore, what gives?

    • WardLittell says:

I must say she’s had some great coverage in British Vogue, going back to her as a heavily pregnant popstrel.
Did La Wintour hate her? She seems to give Vogue covers to the highest bidder these days!
      πŸ˜‰

    • littlestar says:

The way many see it, if Wintour gives Beckham the Vogue cover, shouldn’t other designers be on the cover too? I can’t think of a single time in Vogue’s history where the designer as a person was featured on the cover. VB should be happy if her CLOTHING is on the cover, not her.

      • WardLittell says:

Good point. As it happens she had a terrific personal photo feature/interview in a recent UK Vogue, (which I must read again pronto), but the last cover itself may have been before she embarked on designing.
I hope Vogue is not too doctrinaire about this though, as I am still waiting for a Choupette cover!

  21. Cody says:

Harper is so cute, a real daddy’s girl.

  22. Ginger says:

I’m a huge soccer fan so I still think of David first, then Victoria. BUT I love and adore the whole family. I used to see them all the time at the L.A. Galaxy games when David played for them. So, Victoria and the kids support him too. They are so refreshing (and absolutely gorgeous!) The kids are getting so big now!

    • WardLittell says:

      Ginger
Do you remember the 1998 World Cup, when David B was sent off for a dirty tackle on Argentina? Victoria immediately comforted him, they being a newly in-love pair. The story was that she said “Never mind, babes, your highlights looked smashing”.
Myth or not, this actually endeared them even more to many, and it certainly made David look a bit less like Public Enemy Number One, for that foul!

  23. Solanaceae (Nighty) says:

Wow..I actually like her clothes… They’re sober and nice… not bad. I thought they’d be scandalous, but no…nice and comfortable, apparently..

  24. Algernon says:

“I think I know how women feel, how women want to look.”

    Tortured and deeply uncomfortable?

  25. littlestar says:

I’ve always liked VB. She just seems so kind and entirely unlike the “unsmiling persona” she tries to put out there. Not a fan of her clothing though – just seems really plain and boring to me. Not enough spice to it LOL.

  26. Mango says:

Is it just me or does Harper seem super tall for a 3 year old? Jeebus. Model for sure.
