Kristen Stewart: ‘I’m endlessly, and to this day, f–king proud of Twilight’

kstew1

Kristen Stewart covers the March issue of Interview Magazine. The interview was conducted by icon of not giving any f—ks, Patti Smith. It’s interesting to me that Patti Smith would agree to interview Kristen “It’s like a poem, it’s about water” Stewart. But stranger things have happened, of course. Anyway, I only skimmed the Interview piece – I find Interview Mag’s cover stories pretty tedious these days, too much mutual appreciate and ass-kissing for my taste, but you can read the full piece here.

On Twilight: “Anybody who wants to talk sh-t about Twilight, I completely get it, but there’s something there that I’m endlessly, and to this day, f-cking proud of. My memory of it felt—still feels—really good. People are always comparing Twilight to things and trying to figure out why I’ve made certain decisions that I’ve made, and I always say every single moment that has led me to this moment has made me who I am. Every movie that I’ve done, they don’t stand independently from one another because a little bit of me is in every single one of those, and it’s part of my own personal growth.”

Becoming a child actor: “Well, I’m sitting back and enjoying the benefits of a decision that I made when I was a person who I can still relate to but am not anymore.”

On Jodie Foster: “I was really lucky to work with her at such a young age because I’ve had some serious self-persecuting … People sometimes actually get me to think I take things too seriously and maybe I’m too earnest and it’s coming across like I’m better than them. But working with people like Jodie—we are quite kindred. There’s just something when people look at you and go, “Listen, I know it’s awkward, but just keep being honest.” I could have gotten really unlucky and compared myself to another kind of actress and felt inadequate. I can’t, like, put on the show. I’m not a performer. And it’s hard for people to accept a serious tone from a kid without thinking they’re sort of stuck up.

On wearing heels: “I can do it for about three minutes.”

Her next project: “I’m writing a poem for the wedding of one of my best friends.”

[From Interview Magazine]

Here’s something interesting: Patti Smith is a Twihard!!! For real. She compliments K-Stew on the Twilight franchise, saying, “I loved your work in those films. I thought the commitment of everyone in those films was true. Like The Hunger Games—if you accept the world that you’re entering, and if the people deliver that world, that’s what we’re looking for.” Ha, that’s a dangerous thing to compare the Twilight franchise to The Hunger Games, but whatever. Patti Smith is a Twihard. Patti Smith likes sparkly vampires and lip-biting heroines.

As for Kristen still feeling proud of her work in the franchise… so be it. I like her more for owning that part of her filmography. It’s not like it’s something she can walk away from, you know?

‘but there’s something there that I’m endlessly, and to this day, f-cking proud of. ‘

Ask her again in a few more years.

  2. mimif says:

She looks like a Replicant in these pics.

    • Leftovers says:

I think her look is pretty good in these pictures. In fact I watched Blade Runner the other day. *le sigh*

      • mimif says:

So did I! Rutger Hauer was everything, the Original Sad Boy.

P.S. 4/5 Replicants in that movie were smoking.

      • Leftovers says:

Right?! I might just watch it again this weekend, just because.

      • mimif says:

Which cut, original or director’s? IS DECKHARD A REPLICANT?

      • Leftovers says:

ETA: Posted in wrong comment section… oops.

Director’s. I am only a recent convert to BR, but boy oh boy. 🙂
I’ll have my own theories shortly, still quite embracing the whole vibe.

  3. OSTONE says:

She comes across more likeable for owning up to it. If she were trying to distance herself from the franchise, albeit sh*tty, that launched her career to superstardom, most of us would die from a massive, collective eye roll as big, if not bigger, than the massive, collective eye rolls that The Triangle of Doom, Comet Sophies and Goopy’s threads bring us. So thank you, Kstew for sparing us.

    • doofus says:

I agree with you and Kaiser. I admire/respect her for not dissing what made her famous, like so many movie stars do.

not that I was a fan of those movies, but I’m glad she recognizes that they made her a star and that she likely wouldn’t have the opportunities that she has without those movies.

      • GoodNamesAllTaken says:

Agree. Haven’t seen the movies and don’t plan to, but I like that she respects the part the franchise played in her life.

    • sills says:

Agree, it’s nice to hear actors acknowledge that everything they do is a stepping stone to something else, even if it’s not high art. Like Matthew McConaughey appreciating his rom coms or Julianne Moore her soaps, at that level it’s good to remember you’ve had opportunities 99% of working actors haven’t.

  4. taterho says:

Love Patti Smith. Not sure how I feel about the pics. Very Blondie circa 1979. I’m sorta diggin’ it.
I can’t walk in heels to save my life. I suppose if I was wearing heels I wouldn’t survive anyway. I would be the one tripping, falling, adjusting heels that the zombies eat first.

  5. Seapharris7 says:

Well… I guess being in Twilight is better than being in the plagiarized fanfic version of it.

  6. Mel M says:

I just decided to watch the first Breaking Dawn yesterday oddly enough and it just reminded that KStew is the only actress that can make me constantly cringe when I shouldn’t be. She makes me sit there and think, wow acting looks really tough and exhausting. No one else can make me think about that stuff when I’m watching a movie, usually I’m quiet into the story and don’t think about the acting at all.

  7. coral says:

I feel like I’m Kstew is finally maturing after coming off stunted for a long stretch. I think some college would do her a world of wonders though. Like her world would really open up both intellectually but also emotionally cause I think she has a touch of the child actor syndrome(not around peers enough and adults blowing air up your as s just to get you to do what they want but she internalized the special snowflake as s kissing)

    • Curious Cole says:

+1. I think studying English or Literature at university would really help beat the f–ks out of her interviews.

  8. Lana says:

Of course she’s gonna say that she’s proud of Twilight if she wants her fans to keep buying tickets. She’s really a fake-I clearly remember her insulting the Twilight fans when the first movie was released. I prefer Rpatz approach:he kept saying the same thing about the Twilight movies for years(that they are sh*t but that he’s also grateful for the doors it opened for him).

    • OhDear says:

To be fair, if she said anything negative about Twilight people would be on her case for biting the hand that fed her.

    • dori says:

What tickets are her fans buying exactly cause all her indie movies aren’t exactly making bank. I think Robert was hilariomus about his attitude and he’s loads more likeable but she was actually nicer about fans and their love of twilight than he was. I always thought she was a little kinder about twilight because she got close to the author. Robert handled the madness much more graciously in general though for sure.

    • Div says:

Meh, I’m more understanding of her talking a little shit at 17 and then changing to appreciate them more as time went on more than RPattz talking shit after all the movies ended. I distinctly remember Rpattz saying something about middle aged women who do nothing all day but sit behind computers in a recent interview or something cringeworthy and also saying Twilight was like the author’s wetdream. That said I totally understand that some of the Twi-Hards (let’s be honest most) are batshit crazy compared to other crazy Stans so it makes sense that all the stars got frustrated. Anna Kendrick has talked some shit too about the movies and how over the top the Stans are, and Anna is pretty mild mannered

  9. Allie says:

This was a really cool photoshoot and interview. She looks great.

Patti Smith has actually liked Kristen for years. She said a few years back that she wanted Kristen to play her in the movie adaptation of her book, Just Kids. Not sure if that’s happening, but it was cool. She went to the NY Film Fest premiere of Clouds of Sils Maria, and Kristen was just at one of Patti’s LA shows where Patti walked into the audience to go hug her. It’s pretty awesome that they seem to have mutual respect.

And I love that Kristen owns Twilight and is proud of it. For all the grief people give her over supposedly being ungrateful, she stands by her work and knows what got her to where she is today.

    • mädchen says:

Love your comment! I barely comment here, difficult to have a conversation about K here for many reasons, but some posts are hilarious. This interview was really great, they like each other and that’s what counts the most. So happy for K. Liked the part about Sils Maria the most.

  10. bns says:

Smart of her to get in bed with the fashion people to keep her name in the press since she can’t compete with Jennifer Lawrence, Mia Wasikowska, Carey Mulligan, etc. for film roles.

No matter how much she says otherwise, she is just as full of sh*t, maybe even more, than everyone else in Hollywood. She presents it differently, but at the end of the day it’s still the same.

    • lolab says:

All starlets get in bed with fashion labels nowadays-that’s part of their job description. I love those actresses abilities and think kristen isn’t in their tier either but she seems to be working steadily so maybe she is finding a niche that suits her.

    • Helo says:

      @BNS: +1.

  11. Paloma says:

    Dear Celebrities,
Quit throwing the F word around. It’s vulgar and you are taken less seriously.

    • mia girl says:

It is actually her use of another word that bothers me more.
In this interview she interjects that her character, Bella did something “Retarded” .
So while I want to give her credit for embracing Twilight, I really hate when people use the word in this manner. So no credit – she sucks.

  12. Joy says:

I feel like these camera angles maybe aren’t the most flattering. That said, I’m glad she’s not one of those who wants to crap on the thing that made her a star.

  13. platypus says:

“I can’t, like, put on the show. I’m not a performer.” Girl, I think you’re in the wrong profession.

  14. Jess says:

Well at least she owns! I enjoyed the films, I used to make fun of people for watching them but then I got sucked into one on tv and it was over, lol. Funny she mentioned being a kindred spirit with Jodie, they look similar to me, and something about their voices is the same.

  15. Mi says:

She looks high in that clown make-up with Cara Delevingne’s eyebrows.I can’t even with that interview,I haven’t read such ass kissing and PR scripted BS for a long time.lol

  16. Angie says:

Well Kristen earned a few points in my book for her Twilight comments. Few things bug me more than actors trashing the work that made them famous. I especially like actors like Julianne Moore. She’s been incredibly respectful of her soap opera past. Nice to see Kristen emulated her screen mom a little bit in this area.

    • Anne says:

What’s wrong with an actor saying that he/she was in a bad movie or saying that he/she was bad in a movie? I like when actors say things as they are. Clooney, Affleck have all said that they have made bad carreer choices in the past and I respect them for their honesty.

      • Angie says:

IMO it’s classless and shows a lack of gratitude and appreciation. Noone put a gun to those actors heads and forced them to take those jobs. Now they are enjoying the benefits from those projects (exposure, fanbase, MONEY, etc) and they’re badmouthing it? Sorry I don’t give them “honesty” points. I think it’s an asshole move.

Also alot of people work hard on some of these “bad” projects. Mr “Honest” (incredibly privileged) actor is now shitting on their work. I also sometimes feel bad for the people who may have enjoyed those projects. The actor is basically calling them idiots for liking it.

Having said that, I’m sure there are ways to be HONEST without being a dick about it. But in general I have ALOT more respect for the Julianne Moores, Matthew McConaghey , Robin Williams, of the world than actors that mock or belittle the work they did in the past.

Sorry if I sound aggressive but “lack of gratitude” really rubs me the wrong way. Even among regular folk. But ESPECIALLY among rich, privileged actors.

  17. Catelina says:

Well it completely changed her career, opened up doors. So fair enough.

  18. Anne says:

She’s proud of twish*t :-). Yeah, right. More like your PR told you to kiss the studio’s ass. I bet she must have been paid a lot of money to promote that twilight facebook project. She says she’s honest but she has always come across as the opposite.

    • Dido says:

Of course she’s proud of Twilight and kissing studio’s ass..especially Lionsgate coz they’re distributing her new movie “American Ultra” that is getting released this year. And Lionsgate/Summit owned Twilight too…I won’t believe anything this girl says. She called her fans “Retarded” and in this interview, she calls Bella’s character, “Retarded”. I mean, how difficult is it to use some other word instead of “Retarded”. Smh

  19. Nicolette says:

Love it, hate it, proud of it, or endlessly shamed by it one thing is true. Twilight put her on the map and made her a lot of money. She will always be associated with Bella by her fans and she knows it so why burn that bridge.

  20. WardLittell says:

Stewart makes me yawn, but I’d read this for Patti Smith. She (Patti) may not give a fook, but she’s always conveyed it through her work and her manifest honesty, rather than just a generic pout/sneer and a middle finger. (I take it we are not equating lack of lipstick with not giving a furque).
I think Stewart’s quite young for her age, IYSWIM….she’s a little Bieberish-bratty to me, love affairs and Lagerfeld notwithstanding, but as she matures she could become an interesting person, if she has influences like Smith and Foster at her back as she negotiates her path. Lucky young woman.

  21. LAK says:

There is something about her that reminds me of Jodie Foster. There is this physical similarity to the current JF which isn’t there when compared to the real JF at a similar age. Don’t know. It’s a niggle.

    • Div says:

I always thought she resembled Jodie Foster physically quite a bit, especially in this type of shoot with lighter hair

      • perplexed says:

I saw a clip of Jodie Foster when she was younger, and she reminded me physically of Kristen Stewart. The resemblance seems to come and go.

  22. Lucy says:

Just wanted to say that Patti is also part of the THG fandom!!! There are several pictures of her wearing a Mockingjay pin (amazing) and she even attended the Catching Fire premiere!

  23. Peach says:

Every time I read quotes from a Kristen interview it feels like she’s throwing shade at her acting peers. Every interview she goes on about how she can’t “put on a show” or refuses to “play the game” cause SHE’S so real and genuine! (unlike those fakety-fake actresses who wash their hair, smile in pictures, crack jokes on Letterman, and win Oscars) . Everyone but her are phony sell outs and HW clichés (forget those pesky Balenciaga and Chanel campaigns…that was ART! Or the affair with the married director…that came from an honest place! Or her declaring she’d LOVE to do a Marvel film…that’s all about personal growth!)

Her quotes simultaneously reek of superiority and jealousy. Like the mean girls in HS who talk themselves up but only feel good about themselves when they’re tearing others down

  24. LAURA says:

Peach, you said everything I wanted to say. That girl is a fake, her PR is endlessly working to change her image but you can see write through her.

  25. Prettyxxc says:

I’ll always like Robert Pattinson for saying that if Edward really existed he would be a dangerous, creepy man. Stewart always pretended that nothing was wrong in the relationship between Bella and Edward. She even said that Bella was a feminist-talk about catering to your fanbase!

  26. Sarah B says:

“Every movie that I’ve done, they don’t stand independently from one another because a little bit of me is in every single one of those…”

Congratulations on playing the same exact character in every movie.

    • Wonderbunny says:

Took me ages to finally watch the Twilight movies and then recently watched the Snow White one on telly. I couldn’t believe how she manages to have the exact same expression on her face in every movie. First I thought it was just for the Twilight franchise, but it seems to be what she does. She even has the same expression in those photos. Only her make-up and styling is different. Amazing.

  27. jenn12 says:

Great- Patti Smith just validated her. The self importance will never end.
