Michael Keaton: ‘Keep your eye on the ball, don’t be a baby, don’t whine’

Michael Keaton

I couldn’t resist squeezing in one more Michael Keaton post before Oscar weekend. All the votes are in, so there’s nothing more the nominees can do but sit on their hands and try to relax. This year’s Best Actor race has been highly entertaining and a bigger bitchfest than I can remember seeing from any recent awards season. These dudes shamelessly worked it. They’ve made Oscar season into a spectator sport, and I thank them for it.

Everyone assumes Eddie Redmayne will win at this point, although Keaton is still regarded as a solid contender. Steve Carell’s been quietly navigating behind the scenes. Benedict Cumberbatch may have realized by now that it’s not happening for him, but Bradley Cooper isn’t giving up. The fake baby and beige booty shorts just don’t stop, y’all. Some critics think BCoop has a shot at taking home this prize, but that would be an unprecedented upset.

Keaton did a few last minute interviews earlier this week. My favorite is a tiny autoplay video from People where Keaton kicks back with his horse in Montana. I’m combining that excerpt with a few others. Keaton’s stance all along has been to admit how much he wants to win and look down upon “false humility.” These new excerpts reflect Keaton’s desire show how hardworking and humble he is, which is interesting. Has he slipped into false humilitiy himself? It’s a fine line, but I think he’s genuine here:

His career in a nutshell: “Ever since I was a little kid, I was very kind of spoiled by the advantage of being able to walk out my door, up over the hill, and down into the woods, and play in the creek all day. I showed up in Los Angeles with about $263 dollars in my pocket. Someone asked me that the other day – ‘when was the time when you really had to pull yourself up by the proverbial bootstraps?’ And the truth is, I pulled myself up from the beginning and I pull myself up just about every job. I’m not sure I’ll ever get the opportunity to do anything like this again. I’m unbelievably grateful for the shot. I wake up in the morning, I’ve got two arms, two legs, two eyes, [breathes deep] got lungs. I’m pretty much good to go.”

He’s excited & grateful for the nomination: “The response from everyone’s been so great, to go through everything and work hard, work as hard as I did on this movie, all the years I’ve put into being recognized. It means a lot to me. It’s really fun, it’s ridiculously flattering … I’ve been doing this for a long time, but I’m grateful, that’s the word I keep using and I’m going to keep using it.”

He nearly “failed miserably” in the role: “It didn’t hit me until we had already started shooting, thank God, that I actually play four characters in this movie. I play the actor and the actor who’s actually directing and then two characters inside a play, then we perform the play inside of it and then there’s the Birdman character … you forget it’s a comedy … finally comedy is getting its due, I think.”

Advice to his younger self: “Mostly I’ve done what I would tell somebody, keep your eye on the ball, don’t be a baby, don’t whine, stay focused and just keep working, and don’t take your eye off the ball.”

[From People, Extra & GMA]

That last excerpt refers to his Golden Globe speech, where he said, “Never whine, ever. Never complain. And always, for crying out loud, keep a sense of humor.” Those are wise words for any occupation, not just acting. Keaton has more perspective (and a longer career) than the other Best Actor nominees. He led the Best Actor category for months, but the SAG and BAFTAs both point to Eddie Redmayne taking the top prize. I’ll be legit sad to see Keaton lose, but I believe him when he says he’s simply grateful to be recognized. He sounds genuinely humble, which is all the more reason for him to win. Oh well. We shall see what happens on Sunday!

I’ve found such a sweet, endearing side of this one during his campaign and speeches. I never realized he was such a softie, I always imagined him as more douchey, more into himself. Could be the Batman affect.

    • MtnRunner says:

Yep. I love his “no bs” way of talking and yet his soft side is on full display. I hope he gets the big one on Sunday.

Can’t wait to see him, Simmons and Hiddles in Skull Island. So much wonderful on one screen.

  2. Tiffany27 says:

I love him and I can’t really verbalize why, but I do.

    • joan says:

I’ve always loved him, on Letterman, as a cute actor, as a standup comedian, or as Beeteljuice.

What other hot actor can stretch that way?

      He’s still got it.

  3. PunkyMomma says:

I’d hit it so hard, Oscar or not.

  4. aims says:

    He’s a class act.

  5. taterho says:

The second pic is the best action pose this week lol! I heart you Mr. Keaton.
I’m all ready to spit out my wine this Sunday when Cooper wins. My cat hacked up a hairball that was beige so I take that as an omen.

    • Jaded says:

Interesting – mine both yacked up orange ones last night….good omen or bad???

      • taterho says:

Orange is another omen pointing to BCoop. Orange = self tanner

*sigh* I might need 2 bottles of wine this weekend.

If anybody’s cat hacks up a hairball that looks like Clint Eastwood it’s a done deal.

      • Jaded says:

If mine regurgitate one that looks like a fake baby I’m never watching the Oscars again.

  6. scout says:

Oh he WANTS to win, don’t be fooled by the ‘wise owl’ words of philosophical wisdom! Hehe.
I don’t mind if he wins though. Eddie can work harder next time, he is capable and young enough.

    • umm... says:

It’s so funny what people read and then comprehend. He never once said he didn’t want to win, or anything even close to that. He said an approximation of: This is fun! I’m super happy for the recognition and I’m grateful to be nominated.

  7. Scarlet Vixen says:

Maybe Monique needs to read his advice…

  8. kri says:

I believe everything he’s saying. The thing about him is, he is not fake humble. He can be bombastic, he can be tempermental. But I do believe he’s been grateful and careful to not become overly “Hollywood.” We are from the same part of Pennylvania, and believe me when I say those things he tells himself are exactly what we were told by my parents. Those values don’t leave you-even when you screw up. He’s awesome. Good luck, MK!

    • Sassy says:

I’m from the Burgh also. Lots of down to earth types are locals – Goldblum, Cuban, Mangeniello,, so true about the value system. I really hope Keaton wins. Bradley Cooper did a really good job in American Sniper, however. I think it will go either way.

  9. Luca76 says:

Ugh I love Micheal Keaton I do but I just watched Birdman last night and I hated it 😟

    I’m so disappointed.

  10. Ann says:

Guess he got humbled; for years there were stories how difficult he was to work with.

  11. Lilacflowers says:

    Man rocks a suit

  12. Mia4S says:

    Team Keaton x10000000!

    But

I’ve decided I’m not watching the Oscars on Sunday. I just can’t bring myself to care. NPH is great but I’ve seen his hosting shtick before. I’ll catch the highlights on YouTube. It’s ironic but all this campaigning and build up and pre-awards awards has made the Oscars anti-climactic. I have a trip to pack for, maybe I’ll stick it on as background noise….maybe.

    • Alicia says:

I didn’t mind Redmayne’s performance, he was quite good, but I really want Keaton to win. I know Birdman is very polarizing but I really liked it.

The only reason I’m watching is because I am running the Oscar pool at my work and I like to see what everyone is wearing.

I have just been so turned off this season by the nastiness, the desperation in the campaigning, etc. I know it is usually like that every year but this year just seems more magnified. Also, the comments by some of the Oscar voters polled have me so irritated that I don’t even want to watch.

I have actually seen all 8 Best Picture nominees and I liked most of them, it’s just the nastiness has gotten to me.

    • InvaderTak says:

You might follow along with a live blog. That’s what I dis for the Baftas and it was way more entertaining. The broadcasts are dull imo.

  13. Jayna says:

I think he’s going to win.

    • charlie says:

I think Eddie was better. I like both of them, and both performances were great, but I think Eddie was a bit better.
Bradley’s win would be a disgrace.

      • Lori says:

I would almost pity BCoop if he won. There would be terrible backlash………..so much worse than when he got SMA because Gosling just didn’t want it.

      • Melanie says:

I think there might be a backlash too if Bradley wins, not that he would deserve it. I didn’t think he deserved the SMA backlash either.

  14. charlie says:

I wish more rich celebrities would follow the “never complain” rule.

  15. Kiddo says:

Now men are into duckface all the time, too? Bleh

  16. Lori says:

I’ve not seen any of the Oscar movies. So I admitt that my choice for the award has nothing to do with actual performance. I WANT Keaton to win.

  17. Nicolette says:

    Love him.

  18. Vampi says:

    MICHAEL KEATON FOR-EVA!
God, I love, love, LOVE this man!!
    Forever dong and such…. Yum!

  19. O-)(-O says:

I hope Birdman wins big tomorrow, such an amazing movie, Keaton was great and Norton was amazing too! Great cast, the way they shot those long continues scenes was not only technically challenging but also visually and artistically stunning. Innaritu for the win for figuring it all out and coming up with such a complex but beautiful story!

  20. Charlotte says:

The oscars are not on my radar for importance, but I’d YouTube watch his acceptance speech if Keaton won. I love him.

    • Lauren says:

I have loved Michael since Multiplicity.
Never could understand why he wasn’t recognized decades ago for his brilliance.
Michael has a masculine, natural flow and grace -maybe he is just too damn good.
