Emma Stone vs. Jennifer Lopez at the Oscars: who had the better Elie Saab?

wenn22222688

I always hear of so-called fashion experts throwing shade at Elie Saab’s made-for-the-red-carpet designs, but I defend the Elie Saab fashion house most of the time. Do the dresses all seem rather frothy and same-y? Sure. But the gowns are usually flattering, wearable, pretty and the ladies who wear Elie Saab usually seem very happy with their choice. Not everyone should or can wear Dior, you know? And I have to think that Emma Stone – one of the brightest fashionista stars on the red carpet these days – choosing to wear Elie Saab will bring the fashion house some new respect.

Emma’s gown has some elements that I would hate in other dresses – it’s deceptively simple, it’s a weird yellow-green celery color that reminds me of bile, and it’s the overdone beading-on-sheer style. But you know what? I actually really like this on Emma in particular. It’s different on her, the bile color actually works (likely because her hair is darker), and the sleeves are done really well. I think the look would have been stronger without the leg slit though.

Also: Emma jumped on Jennifer Aniston on the red carpet. Who knew they were tight?

wenn22222685

So, now that I defended the house of Elie Saab, I have to show you the worst example of it on the Oscars red carpet. Here’s Jennifer Lopez in Elie Saab. This looks like a dozen other dresses she’s worn in her life. It’s too princess-y and it’s too BIG. It takes up too much space. It’s sort of a blah color on J.Lo too. And while I think Jennifer is a beautiful, glamorous woman, I get tired of her always bringing out her ladies.

What was jlo nominated for again?

    • charlie says:

Her sexy face annoys me to no end.

      • Lucretia says:

It’s the hanging-open mouth like she has a cold and can’t breath through her nose.
I want to ask if she needs a tissue.

      • Aussie girl says:

Yes it’s kind of a porn face.

      • MsGoblin says:

        Squinty, mouth-breather.

And her eye make-up and lipstick are fighting with her natural coloring.

      • Sarah says:

I always think of that line from Mary Poppins: “Close your mouth, Michael. We are NOT a codfish!” Someone needs to tell that to JLo.

      • Tiffany :) says:

I hate that pose on her. She looks like she is trying to mimic a blow up sex doll. It looks so forced and therefore, unsexy.

I feel like she has worn this same neckline a billion times over. Plunging V-neck with double sided tape has become JLo’s magic feather. It reeks of insecurity to me.

    • QQ says:

It was either Most Tan, Nicest Body at her age or Come to Watch Real actors win Things??? One of those

Also that dress looks straight out of Taylor Swift’s Goody goody two shoes’ garage sale

Also I Love Emma and all But not only was That dress The Pits, I also dont get How she was Nominated for Birdman TBH

      • Kiddo says:

JLo needs breathe-right strips. The dress was pretty, but needed to have about 2-3 inches more coverage on top. The boobage-spread is so redundant, and boring now.

I wouldn’t mind Emma’s dress in another color, but this didn’t qualify for bile vomit, yellow owns that category.

    • Falula says:

I thought it was hilarious that la Lopez was sitting right next to Meryl. That had to be intentional to give the viewers some laughs, right? What a juxtaposition.

      • tracking says:

I know, such an odd choice!

      • BooBooLaRue says:

Ha ha, I was wondering the same thing. Okay here’s a tip: when I turned 30, my hairdresser told me not to wear pink lippy because I looked too much like a WASPy soccer mom from Greenwich, CT. I took that advise and never looked back. JLo, please loose the lippy and put the girls away. That is all.

      • GingerCrunch says:

Was that JLo’s dress draped all over the aisle? Someone’s was and it looked ridiculous.

      • Lucy says:

That threw me to, why is JLO sitting front row , with her manger no less..

She wasn’t nominated , has never been nominated , wasn’t in a movie that was nominated. So why wasn’t there someone who was nomniated sitting there .

It’s not JLO a blockbuster or even close to one , her last movie made 30 million and that’s considered a hit for her, her music bombs , even her book wasn’t a bestseller …

The girl just good at getting media attention , so are the Kardaishain doesn’t mean you sit them front row at Oscar’s .

  2. charlie says:

Emma looks amazing. Pure perfection. Best dressed of the night, along with Keira.

    • Nk868 says:

Agree, I think without the slit on such a young star with sleeves it might have veered toward too mature

    • Jess says:

Agreed. Emma is my best dressed. She suits green colours sooooo well because she’s pale. Beautiful woman. Such a girl crush <3

      • EC says:

I too have a major crush on her. I think I might have hated that dress on anyone else, but Emma makes everything one million times better. Plus, she wore COLOR which stands out in a sea of beige. The hair, lip, and dress work well together.

    • Diana B says:

Sooo pretty. She always brings it.

    • SilkyP says:

Agree with all of you, Emma lokked amazing in this green color, love it, even though I don’t care for Elie Saab at all usually. I guess the magical ingredient here is Emma!

    • Hally says:

I was really excited to hear what Lainey had to say about her wearing elie Saab as she is forever shitting on his designs. I thought Emma looked great and Keira was lovely too. Jlo looked tacky.

    • Katie says:

Agreed. She look wonderful. She’s s perennial favorite at our house

  3. Palar says:

Agree JLo’s girls need to stay away from a red carpet event once in a while.

    • Mia V. says:

She’s turning her girls into KK girls, always there for anybody.

      • Palar says:

Her boobs have been out on the red carpet since 1999. Enough already!

      • smcollins says:

YES!! I was saying the same thing last night. Yes, she has an incredible body, but it’s really time for her to put her tits away. Or, at the very least, only bring them out once-in-a-while and not EVERY. TIME. she’s on a red carpet (which is constantly). This look is sooooooo tired, and don’t get me started on that damn “sexy face” pose that’s she’s been doing FOREVER!

Emma, on the hand, looks fantastic! She proves that you can look gorgeous and glamorous (and even sexy) without letting it all hang out. Love her!

    • Pandy says:

Well, that’s all she has really. The Girls. That started her career and she’s still coasting on it lol. But her make up was hideous and so was her dress. Maybe Slum Bear picked it out?

  4. Ravensdaughter says:

Pardonnez-moi! It’s not bile colored (which is pea soupy; ever had the dry heaves?), it’s celery green. I can wear that color, too, and I like it.

  5. belle says:

Why can’t jlo dressed appropriate these days? Definition of sexy is actually trying not to be. It’s like she must be sexy all day every day and it just cheapens here. My opinion.

    • Nessa says:

      THIS x 1,000,000!!!

    • ava7 says:

I think showing that much cleavage is just cheap and tacky.

      • Nikki says:

Wow, I said this once (aesthetically) about another actress and 50 people said I was slut shaming. I don’t understand the “rules”! Isn’t she supposed to be able to embrace and own her sexuality? Or is the rule J Lo is inelegant if the girls are on a platter, but others are edgy??

    • Otaku fairy says:

Who gets to decide what’s appropriate for others? The definition of trying to NOT to be sexy is actually modesty. It’s fine if you feel that ‘modest is hottest’, and I definitely think one can be sexy and modest at the same time, but either way it should always be a choice and everyone has their own style. J.LO’s style is unexpected for a woman who’s not ‘young’ and it’s frowned upon, and I kind of like her for it. 🙂

      • Belle says:

To each his own and this is Hollywood after all. It’s all a game, all strategy. JLo has always been sexy and after 15 years she has not evolved in style/fashion, talent, skills. She is in my modest opinion STUCK being 23 and personally I would love to see her evolve. Wealthy people like JLo are not hurting for money therefore they can afford to side step and take real chances but in her case she doesn’t , she continues to make booty videos, throw her cleavage all day everyday and plays the same characters over and over. Now i am 30, she doesn’t appeal to my tastes anymore, she did when I was 18. I am not growing with her in that sense.

      • TeaAndSympathy says:

Belle: “I am not growing with her in that sense.”

I think it’s more that she’s not growing with you… She’s done that look to death. It’s time to bury it, once and for all.

  6. GlimmerBunny says:

Loved the skirt on JLo’s but it’s way too low-cut – looks trashy. Hated her hair too.

Emma was one of my best dressed of the night! And I actually think the celery colour is pretty great, and would have looked good on a lot of other people too.

  7. Birdie says:

Don’t like Emma’s dress at all! But I like JLo’s dress, like the color and it just screams OSCAR. But you know, never the nominee, always for the red carpet.

    • Dońt kill me i'm french says:

      +1,000
Emma Stone’s dress is so safe and the color is insipid on her but nice make up and hair

Jlo’s dress is great on her very sexy Princess of red carpet

  8. als says:

Emma looks amazing, she rarely gets it wrong.
I expected more from JLo – can’t believe she’s in nude – it’s against nature, especially HER nature.

  9. Kali says:

Agree to disagree on J-Lo’s dress. If you’re not going to go princess at the Academy Awards, when can you?

Love Emma’s dress but I’m not a fan of that particular colour. The beading/workmanship on it is absolutely stunning though.

    • ORLY says:

Her dress was over the top for a presenter. Had she been a nominee, it would be more suitable. Then again, it’s too darn princess-y for a woman her age, too much tulle.

      • Kitten says:

This completely. Her dress was embarrassingly “Look at me!” when she was only a presented. Awesome body, though.

      • bella says:

        hmmmm…
i saw jlo’s gown in an entirely different light.
she did present for best costume, right?
        that’s what i remember…will have to google it…
so, i think the over the top “costume” was perfect.
i do wish she’d cover up the girls, though.
she’s so stunning and gorgeous and YOUNG looking…she doesn’t need to expose her chest, especially that she’s a mature woman now…enough.
emma stone looked just so, so incredible.
she wore the gown like a glass of water, ya’ know?
it flowed effortlessly…although it may have lots to do with her over the top thin frame…
emma has that style though…as i’ve posted numerous times…the same “IT” factor as marion cotillard…both can wear the hell out of anything…

    • I think if the shade was a couple notches darker it would have worked better with Emma’s skin tone.

  10. Gracie says:

Is it me or JA looks PG next to Emma?

  11. kai says:

*hides face*..i looooooved Jlos dress…yes..emma looked great..she looks healthy enough!!!

  12. moi says:

Any detail on emma bracelets/cuffs? they look very interesting, I’m curious whether they are added by stylist or are part f the design

  13. LDUB says:

Emma looked gorge. She’s deff becoming “one to watch” among the younger set in fashion. It helps that she’s a couple of pounds heavier *no shade* and a red head; being blonde would’ve washed the whole thing out.

Also, it’s JLo…..I mean what do you expect….*ALL tea ALL shade*

    • mia girl says:

Yes. I really like her better with the red hair. I wasn’t crazy about the dress but she pulled it off. She looked great.

And I loved her mom. She was having fun during the whole ceremony and I swear she got more screen time than most of the nominees!

  14. vauvert says:

Hated both dresses, JLo’s is too much: too beady and too low cut and too poufy and too flesh coloured… And please stop with the sexy open mouth like you are always panting for air. We get it, you’re sex on legs. Whatever.
I normally love Emma but hated the hair, and hated the dress. Just too overworked, she really looks better in simpler, bolder designs. That burnout whatever fabric is so nineties and matronly and even with her incredible skin and hair, the colour is vile.

  15. smee says:

That color shouldn’t work on ES, but it does. I think she looks great – altho she’s looking a little bony……….

Aniston looks kind of short and dumpy next to and her dress is looking very undergarmenty to me.

JL’s dress is too princessy. She does the nude colored dress, slicked back hair, plunging neckline look way too much.

  16. Tracy says:

You know, you have to give Jennifer Lopez credit for being in just brilliant shape. She’s a beautiful woman. However, I’d love to see her do three things:

    1. Lose the squinty face that she and Kim Kardashian thinks looks sexy. It looks very fake and posed all the time. And her regular expressions are lovely, we don’t need or want to see your “O” face on the carpet.
    2. Be a little less desperate in her gown choices. Jennifer always tries too hard to demand the center of attention status. (Compared to a Kate Blanchette, for example, who just IS the center of attention but in a much less grasping and effortless way.)
    3. Try a new silhouett. Please. For once. Something that doesn’t have a plunging V and isn’t all boobs all the time. Plus lose the miles of princess skirt. You’re not 25 or going to Prom. Can you imagine having to sit next to Jennifer? Her skirt ate the people to the left and right of her all night.

Jennifer, you’re gorgeous, but look around you at other 40+ women and see how they’re doing this with grace. You can be sexy and elegant, you don’t have to be hooch and desperately-seeking-the-spotlight all the time. And please…stop the squint!

    • Kitten says:

The thing is, she has an awesome smile. Instead of always having to look *fierce* she should try looking like she’s having fun. She just comes across as taking herself way too seriously.

    • kri says:

Agree. JLO is beautiful, but SO much much, you know? I loved ES. I was shocked how much I liked her look. She made it all work.

    • Otaku fairy says:

I don’t care for her make-up but, I don’t think all the over 40 women in Hollywood need to have the same style either. That’s fine that other 40+ women are more conservative in dress, but J.LO isn’t, and that’s okay too. I like about half of what J.LO wears.

  17. Lucy2 says:

I like Elie Saab’s beaded on shear gowns, something about them just appeals to me. I really like Emma’s, the color is very different and looks great with her hair.
JLo’s…ugh, the big wide plunging neckline totally ruins it. I feel like there was a pretty dress there and she made them do that to the bodice! Probably not but she is ALWAYS wearing stuff with that. I also wasn’t crazy about the color, but with changes it could be a beautiful princessy dress.

  18. Marianne says:

I absolutely loved Emma’s dress, one of my favourites of the night and I also loved JLo’s dress, but I just wish it was a different colour.

  19. Adiellybelly says:

I gasped when i saw JLo. That dress is beautiful princessy or not. I think the boobs work but would have been better on someone really flat chested. Up close i wasnt a fan of her lip color or the pink eyemakeup. To me that was too promy/princessy. I wouldnt want a overdone smokey eye either. Just soft neutrals. I dont find Emma Stone attractive. I dont get her appeal

  20. Cara says:

Blech, Jlo…slutty princess is a no.

  21. Lucretia says:

My first thought on seeing the JA-ES hug attack was JA in my head: “Get off the hair!!!!”

  22. Jayna says:

    Emma looked stunning.

I loved the color of J-Lo’s gown against her skin. It was a vision in that way.

  23. scout says:

JLO, just be natural girl, tired of looking at your Puffy Fish face coming up for air pose! Ugh.

Emma looks washed out, needed some tan and that color doesn’t suit her. Jen as usual “touchy, feely” like she did to Kate Hudson’s butt. Stop it! 😀

    • woohoo says:

Oh, c’mon. Maybe that is j.lo’s resting face. :p Don’t like that color dress on her at all.

  24. gatinha523 says:

i LOVE emma’s lip color…really brought it all together for me and i thought it complemented the dress and her skin color SO well…i want that shade of lipstick!!! i have to say i also loved Jlo’s gown…that caramel color actually seemed unique to me.

  25. twink says:

JLO! Boy, can that woman get any more beautiful? Also, she gets criticized for the skintight dresses and when she doesn’t wear one, it’s to princessy, she was without a doubt, the most beautiful woman last night.

  26. TrixC says:

Emma’s look is just ok for me, it’s a weird colour that she sort of pulls off but I can’t help thinking how much better it would have looked in a different colour, say emerald green. I’m also not wild about the hair.

JLo’s dress of I sort of love, although we’ve seen this sort of look from her a few too many times. She has exactly the right size boobs to get away with these deep necklines – smaller ladies tend to end up looking bony and on larger frames it’s too much. The colour is also gorgeous with her skin tone.

  27. I Choose Me says:

I love Emma’s dress and except for the slashed down to there bodice, I kinda love J.Lo’s dress too – because of the colour and the beading.

  28. Bridget says:

Emma really dropped the ball here. She had all the gowns in the world to choose from and she goes with that?

J Lo’s dress – what’s with this trend of a wide, deep V that just seems to smoosh right in the middle of a woman’s cleavage? It wasn’t flattering. And I am officially tired of all the boobs. I’m boobed-out.

  29. Sara says:

Hideous dresses but Emma is pretty.

  30. Otaku fairy says:

I like J.Lo’s dress- I do like it better than the dress she wore to the after-party and I like it better than Emma’s dress too, mainly because I don’t like the color of Emma’s dress.

  31. Camille (The Original) says:

Well I think JLo’s boobs look amazing (no saggy breasts at 40+ and after kids even, there!), everything else – its a no from me.

  32. Joh says:

I loved that Jlo tripped on that dang dress asshe left the stage and someone stepped on it too.
The next time she hasher face worked on she will jump the shark and look totally unlike herself.
She will surely beat out Madonna for not ateing well.

  33. Aurelia says:

Suprised nobody has commented on j lo’s mini boob job. She used to have virtually nothing then after her 2 children she got them done. They look quite decent though. Like Kate Hudsons.

  34. JBanana says:

You can’t compare a Puma to a Cougar just like you can’t compare Scarlette to Jen, WTH??!

  35. Naddie says:

Emma’s dress is awful, but she makes it look good, cause she’s amazing and that’s all.
Jennifer Lopez is the worst, the only thing I actually like about her is her smile, that she always decides to hide. Damn, woman, you’re beautiful, rich, successful… Show me your teeth already.
