Lupita Nyong’o in custom Calvin Klein at the Oscars: underwhelming or fab?

wenn22224727

It pains me to say this after last year’s Lupita Lovefest, but I didn’t really care for Lupita Nyong’o’s Oscar look last night. Lupita returned as a presenter for Best Supporting Actor, the first award given out. And while the night shouldn’t have been about her, it felt like she was trying to do something bold and interesting and it ended up looking kind of cheap and boring. Her red carpet gown was custom-made Calvin Klein (Francisco Costa) and it had thousands of pearls designed into the dress. I don’t know, you guys. Am I wrong to hate this? Ugh.

For what it’s worth, I liked her party dress after the show. I can’t find a confirmation on the designer ID, but it looks like another Calvin Klein. This would have been beautifully simple at the Oscars.

Anna Kendrick is not a fashion girl. That’s fine. I get the feeling that she tries and she’s still figuring out her “look.” This isn’t her look. She wore this custom Thakoon in a weird apricot color. Is that what we’re calling it? Coral, maybe. I think this looks cheap. It looks like a Daytime Emmys dress.

  1. I LOVED both Lupita’s looks (especially since they’re sort of tied in together)…..I think Anna Kendrick looks nice, and that’s what she’s going for.

    • Kiddo says:

I liked the first one better yesterday. Something about that straight paneling, near her arms, on the halter, throws it off for me.

      • I see your point with the straps. The pearls are too heavy/looked like they’re stacked up on each other–too many of them. What would’ve made the look cooler is if they’d added some black pearls, in an interesting design or something like that, in with the white pearls.

    • Tristan says:

The halter detail in the first dress Lupita wore is awful! She looks hunched. On the other hand, the strapless dress is perfect on her, and she looks her usual gorgeous self

      • L says:

Yea it’s the halter that is throwing it off for me. It just looks cheap and like some crafting design gone horribly wrong.

And it was so loud when she was walking across the stage. All I could hear were the pearls rubbing together ‘clack clack clack’ it was uber distracting.

      • Zippi says:

Yes, it looks like an inflatable life vest. No no. Too much an effort (and cost) for such a result.

      • Lilacflowers says:

The halter part around her neck was too bunched and big and choking.

      • Gea says:

Definitely, strapless gown looks better on Lupita.

    • Anne tommy says:

Second that Virgilia, I think Lupita looks totally fab in both, and Anna looks lovely.

      • Marieeeee says:

I truly hate when I have to disagree with you Kaiser, as you are so often spot on. But these ladies looked amazing. Both of Lupita’s gowns are exquisite, and Anna looks gorgeous. Definite win for both of them.

    • Stef Leppard says:

I loved how Lupita’s dress had a 3D look. Plus I love her in white. She always knows how to bring it.

    • MtnRunner says:

I’m glad I wasn’t the only one who loved Lupita’s dress. It wasn’t as stunning as stunning as what she wore last year, but I liked it. I thought it looked even better in motion when she walked out on stage.

  2. Tracy says:

Yup, you’re wrong about Lupita’s pearl dress. The after-party dress was equally brilliant.

    • Becky1 says:

I agree. I thought Lupita (along with ScarJo) had the best look of the night. Beautiful women with different body types but both dressed well for their shape and looked great.

      • Hally says:

Luipta it the pearl dress and Scarjo were my worst dressed. The shape of lupitas dress and the straps in the back look “off”. Her after party dress was simple, but much nicer.

  3. Lucy2 says:

The top of Lupita’s bothers me, looks like an arts and crafts project. Her party dress was great, too bad she didn’t just wear that.
I like Anna’s, it wasn’t anything extraordinary but she looked nice.

    • dewdrop says:

Agreed with about the top part, I thought she looked like a mermaid

    • Audrey says:

A cutout is an automatic no from me. I like the color of Anna’s dress but the cutout detail is awful.

Lupita should have worn the after party dress to the show.

Anything but a dress with a stomach window

    • Sparkly says:

I had the arts & crafts reaction, too. I *love* pearls and liked that they tried to do something interesting with them, but it ended up looking like macrame.

      • Hally says:

Same. The pearls looked super plasticky and like the bodice was made with a glue gun on a cardboard form :/

  4. LadyMTL says:

I’m on the fence about Lupita’s dress. I like the overall look – the cream color against her skin is STUNNING – but the heavy pearl-rope neckline is bugging me.

    • Santia says:

Yeah, it bugs me, too. The pearls/beading are piled too high, making it look like her shoulders go up to her ears.

  5. charlie says:

Is Lupita’s afterparty dress the same Anne Hathaway wore to the Oscars a couple of years ago? It looked better on Anne.
The lipstick she wore to the afterparty looks amzing on her.

Anna’s dress was a nice shape, but that colour is so ugly.

  6. QQ says:

It’s Underwhelming but fab cause ..6,000 pearls are still 6,000 pearls (i did Love it tho and her second dress too

Mousy Girl is wearing color and Dress we call Sexy Mother of the Groom Teas

    • UltraViolet says:

I disagree. Without the background info (ie ‘It was 6000 pearls!’) it’s hard to appreciate Lupita’s dress. Great concept, but it doesn’t fit well, looks uncomfortable and doesn’t make the most of her beautiful dark skin. I love Lupita in brilliant color, like her blue dress last year, which also had the benefit of a soft, flowing fabric.

  7. Kali says:

I thought Lupita’s dress was amazing but I almost wish there had been some colour variation in the pearls (maybe some sort of ombré effect overall? Don’t know) so you could TELL that it was a huge amount of detail on the dress. It “read” much better on the red carpet beforehand where you got to look at it closely. It just looked like a white dress with bits hanging off it when she presented.

Does Anna Kendrock have a stylist? Maybe she could poach whoever helps Scarlett Johansson or Reese Witherspoon?

  8. Megan says:

Lupita looks like a goddess in her after party dress. Absolutely stunning.

    • Shambles says:

ITA. She literally took my breath away. That color makes her skin pop and she’s just absolutely radiant. Goddess.

  9. Enny says:

Kaiser, I don’t usually disagree with you on these matters. I think you’ve got pretty good taste and sense of style. That said, you have to be smoking crack because Lupita looks absolutely stunning and Anna’s dress is very pretty (except for the wrinkled hem).

  10. Kiddo says:

Lupita’s second gown is striking. She looks like a statue. I love the simplicity. As Mom says, “Less is more”, sometimes.

I don’t love Anna’s color, but I don’t hate it. However, she absolutely rocks it, in that cut. The photos don’t do it justice, here, but her body is insane.

    • Diana B says:

And Anna’s dress fits her like a dream, you sure are right to say she has a rocking body and dress showed that. I really liked it and had no problem with the color.

  11. smee says:

Lupita’s pearl dress looked like it weighed a ton when she walked. I liked the neckline, but the silhouette isn’t great. I think the look could have been achieved with a great pearl necklace instead of all of that. The after-party dress is totally the one she should have worn to the Oscars. I love the color and sleek lines.

  12. Dhavynia says:

I loved Ana’s dress, the color at least. It might look cheap on print but it didn’t when she was on stage.
Lupita’s dress might have been more of a wow factor if it wouldn’t have been all white. You couldn’t see the detail of the pearls, maybe a different color underneath IMO

  13. vauvert says:

Not loving the pearl dress. It would have been fine with simple lines but as it was… Just no. Her after party dress was perfect.
I actually liked Anna’s dress except I am so tired of cutouts everywhere! Hope we have seen the last of them.

  14. Ginger says:

You aren’t “wrong” to hate it. If that’s how you feel, then cool. I think it was a “controversial” dress because it seemed that you either loved it or hated it, no in between? I for one loved it. This was my favorite gown of the night. All of the pearls made me think of a mermaid for some reason. It fit her perfectly and I loved how it moved when she walked. I’m sure it must have weighed a ton and yet she glided around like it was nothing. And she’s so gorgeous!

    • sills says:

Agree, it was a “love or hate” dress and for me it was love–she looked like a statue of a Greek goddess, absolutely show-stopping.

  15. ORLY says:

I love Lupita’s dress. She looked stunning to me, it was appropriate for a presenter, unlike JLO. Lupita just needs to stop matching her eyeshadow to her dress.
I thought Anna looked lovely in her salmon coloured Thakoon.

  16. ray says:

Lupita’s dress just reminded me of Kim Kardashian in Playboy 🙁

  17. Applapoom says:

Her body is amazing. The dresses were ok.

  18. Falula says:

I’m admittedly not a huge fashion person, but I’m still surprised I feel so differently about these two – I loved both!

  19. LaurieH says:

Lupita has had a few misses on the red carpet, but this is not one of them. She looks beautiful. I like Anna Kendrick’s dress, but it looks kind of ordinary to me….like something I could buy in a average department store.

  20. AG-UK says:

I liked Lupita’s 2nd dress better but that’s just me, but her brother sure can find the camera.

  21. Marianne says:

I loved Anna Kendrick’s dress! I personally didnt care for Lupita’s.

  22. MonicaQ says:

I liked the first dress even if my husband remarked it looked like she was mugged by creatures of the deep.

  23. Vee says:

I loved Anna’s dress, the fit and color were spot on. Meh to Lupitas dress, sadly.

  24. scout says:

I love Lupita’s second dress, not the first one with Pearls, bit too much.

Anna K, hope she atleast smelled like real Lavender! HeHe…

  25. Adiellybelly says:

Did Not like that dress at all on Lupita. It seemed liked something id see in a window at at art school fashion exhibit for creativity. And i dont like the color on her. Stop w the eyeshadow matching girl. I think he would look amazing in JLos dress tho! Shes got the flat chest i like in those cutouts

  26. Sabrina says:

I love both of Lupita’s dresses but her party dress is definitely better.

Anna’s dress is nice but not memorable.

  27. elo says:

I don’t like either look, I feel Lupita and Anna are both more exciting than these dresses. I do like Lupitas after party dress and the color of Annas but I hate most white gowns as they almost always look Bridal to me. I would have loved to see color on Lupita, bright pink, yellow, orange or the like.

  28. Jayna says:

Thumbs down. It wore her. She didn’t wear it. Not particularly flattering.

Her after party gown looked beautiful on her.

  29. Sarah says:

I loved Lupita’s dress. Thought she looked fantastic and she seemed so happy on the red carpet show. I also liked Anna’s dress if only because it was a spot of color in a pale or black sea of stars. It fit her beautifully. And there’s nothing wrong with the Daytime Emmy’s. That’s where Julianne Moore got her start after all!

  30. smcollins says:

I think both of them looked gorgeous. I really love Lupita’s dress (her party one, too). The detailing and fit are beautiful. Her dark skin against the pearls really sets it off. Gorgeous.

  31. Gia says:

Lupita is gorgeous. Love her dress! Anna is so boring and her dress reminded me of Eva Longiria’s salmon/gold moment she had a few years back. Boring personality and dress. Not a fan of her at all.

  32. Tig says:

Loved the color of Anna’s dress with her coloring. I think Anna gets it right more than wrong on most red carpets, and don’t see this as a fail.

Lupita’s is just a gimmick gown. She is so stunning- let the dress enhance her- that’s why the VF gown is so much better. I get the gown took a lot of craft,etc- just its a dress that wears the wearer.

  33. Naddie says:

The only problem I saw on Lupita’s first dress was that it made her look a little bit hunched; still, the color fits perfectly on her dark skin. The other dress wouldn’t work for some other woman, but it looked gorgeous on her.

  34. Cynthia says:

Honestly I was stunned when I first saw Lupita on TV, imo the dress was way better in motion. The after party dress was beautiful as well !

  35. I Choose Me says:

I think Lupita looks gorge in both gowns esp. the gold. And I love Anna’s dress too but then I’m a sucker for that colour so.

  36. Josefa says:

I thought Lupita looked amazing. Anna looks unmemorable as usual.

  37. vv007 says:

Sorry but Lupita’s red carpet dress reminded me of Community, and Pierce Hawthorne’s father and his wig made out of ivory lol : http://vignette3.wikia.nocookie.net/community-sitcom/images/4/4c/CorneliusHawthorne.png/revision/latest?cb=20111106135011

  38. TrixC says:

This is not my favourite thing Lupita has worn, but I think it was an interesting choice and the colour really accentuated her gorgeous skin tone.

I don’t think Anna’s gown is a great choice for her body type, it would look great on someone with more athletic shoulders.

  39. Chinoiserie says:

Both looked wonderfull even if you could not notive the pears well and the shoulders were too heavy.

  40. M.J. says:

I like Lupita’s party dress much more than her Oscar dress. She looks stunning. I hate Anna’s dress. The color is awful, and it just screams prom to me. It’s budget looking.

  41. AlmondJoy says:

To those saying that Lupita needs to stop wearing matching eyeshadow, may I ask what color you suggest she wears?

    • Greek Chic says:

It’s not only the matchy matchy thing that looks dated but also that she usually wears bold blue, green or yellow eyeshadow and these colors don’t flatter anyone. In her case it doesn’t bother me because they make a nice contrast with her skin tone and give a fun and “fashion girl” vibe to her look. Truth is that I think that she would look prettier with metallic, bronze and earthy eyeshadows.

Here she looks fabulous and I like her pearl dress.

      • AlmondJoy says:

Greek Chic: I get what you’re saying. I agree that sometimes her eyeshadow may seem dated to some. I think people have to realize, tbough, that wearing eyeshadow that matches your dress is a very African thing to do. The same with the shoes, which people here seem to complain about often. She’s a fashion girl, and in my opinion, her style is heavily influenced by her African roots. As far as the idea that earthy colors would look nice on her, I tend to agree. My mom is the same complexion is she tends to stick to more earthy tones. Still, I like the fact that she doesn’t stick to the idea that darker skinned women shouldn’t wear color. She pushes the envelope and takes risks. I love that seeing her styling has encouraged many of my friends that look similar to her to take risks as well, and realize that their skin color doesn’t need to hinder them from wearing certain shades.

      • Greek Chic says:

@Almondjoy I agree that Lupita’s make up is inspired by her African roots and that’s one of the reasons I like it on her. The bright colors look nice on her skin, a pale person like myself could never pull this look of. I’m stuck to neutrals and bronzes.
Also when she wears tricky colors like yellow as an eyeliner, it looks high fashion.
If she wore earthy colors she would play it safe and look “prettier” but with the bright colors she looks funky. She’s a fashion girl so it’s nice that she’s bold and takes risks.

  42. Fan says:

    She is beautiful.

  43. kri says:

I basically lost it when I saw Lupita. I was in awe of this dress and the way she wore it. Just-ohmy god. I know some people are saying “no cut-outs” or too much collar, etc. I see why, but this dress for me is kind of transcendent. Yes, I am in love with it. Tbh, only she could have worn that.

  44. Carol says:

Love the pearl dress! I have a heavily beaded gown and found that sitting down was uncomfortable. I bet being seated in this gown felt like perching on a pile of marbles. OUCH!

  45. Pandy says:

Lupita looks like she’s crewing on a schooner and carrying anchor rope. Fail.

  46. serena says:

I love Anna’s dress! It’s simple yet beautiful, and it’s nice to see some coral colours too. Also her make up is truly perfection!

  47. TuesdaysChild says:

Lupita looked fabulous. In BOTH dresses. That is all.

  48. Beckysuz says:

The bottom of Lupita’s dress is beautiful, but the top reminds me of the time my daughter got into my jewelry box and came out wearing ALL THE NECKLACES. It’s too much on her delicate frame. And I love a small chest(got one), but I think if she had a bigger bust it might have helped. Something about the heaviness of the top and the lack of curves make it seem the dress is overwhelming her. She’s a beautiful woman though

  49. Otaku fairy says:

I actually like Lupita’s white dress, but think the other one is just okay. I kind of like Anna Kendrick’s dress but I can also see how the material of the dress is kind of cheap looking.

  50. Judyk says:

As a presenter, IMO, Lupita had the best gown of the evening.

  51. luffy says:

The dress itself was beautiful, but it was not right on lupita who has a small and boxy frame. this dress would have looked better on someone with a long willowy body to balance out the dress. it was just to much for lupitas small body and came out looking weird. if someone like Naomi Campbell had worn it im sure it would have been better received.

  52. Abby says:

Aw i really liked Anna’s look. It’s a pretty color and it fits her nicely.

  53. maeliz says:

I can’t imagine how heavy and uncomfortable Lupita’s dress was. Piled a little too high on her neck and shoulders. Those pearls on her dress must have left her with an achy back and neck the next day.

  54. Cala says:

Am I alone in thinking she did this on purpose? She wasn’t up for an award and last year she made better choices. *shrugs* She is pretty regardless. I just thought maybe she didn’t want to take attention away from the nominees

    • Kimberly says:

I was also thinking the same.
And I’m glad she wasn’t trying to take away the spotlight from the other nominees.

I didn’t see the need for her to go all out the way she did last year because 2014 was her year to shine (seeing that she was nominated)

She looked simple yet elegant and very beautiful.

  55. Kimberly says:

Well I guess my opinion is one the unpopular ones here but I love this look on Lupita.
I think Lupita is such a beautiful woman and I think she pulled off this gown quite well. White compliments her beautiful skin tone.
