Riley Keough’s Delphine Manivet wedding gown: stunning or too conservative?

Earlier this month, Riley Keough married a stuntman, Ben Smith-Petersen, in the middle of the week. The whole thing had the vibe of a spur-of-the-moment thing, only I don’t think it was. Like, Riley planned on getting married on a Wednesday. She hired photographers and got a pretty dress and sold the photos to Hello. Maybe Wednesday weddings will be the newest thing?

In any case, Hello Mag published the wedding photos – go here to see. Her long-sleeved dress was by Delphine Manivet. Riley told Hello, “I wanted the dress to be simple and long sleeve and made of lace. Delphine made exactly what I wanted. I’m not very flashy, I wanted it to be very simple.” She also says she barely wore any makeup (hippie!) and wanted to wear her hair down. The wedding took place at the Calistoga Ranch in Napa Valley and guests included Zoe Kravitz, Cara Delevingne and Kristen Stewart (and Kristen’s plus-one, Alicia Cargile).

Anyway, Ben is cute, right? They met while Riley was filming Mad Max – he was a stuntman on the film, and that’s where Riley befriended Zoe Kravitz too. I figured you would like to see the wedding pics because everyone loves wedding photos! I think Riley’s dress is really pretty and I think Riley is really pretty too – she’s only 25! I wonder if she’ll be knocked up with Elvis’s great-grandchildren soon.

You always see brides wearing strapless, sleeveless dresses. This is a nice change of pace.

    • bette says:

I agree, it’s gorgeous! Count me in too as being tired of the strapless wedding gown which has almost become a wedding uniform since everyone seems to wear it.

      • why not says:

I guess I should have chosen a wedding dress with full sleeves for my wedding in Mexico (where it was 92 degrees) because strapless gowns are so vile. Yeah, I don’t think so. To be honest, I would have preferred straps or short sleeves but the strapless was the most flattering and I didn’t have much time to look.

I think her dress looks amazing and I agree that it’s a nice change. A bride should be able to choose the type of gown shes likes without all the criticism. Granted, it’s celeBITCHY, so as you were….

      • DaysAndNightsOnAir says:

The pictures don’t really bring out the pattern / lace thing on the dress. So it is probably much more beautiful than in those pics.

    • Kaley says:

I wore sleeves and up until the actual wedding every time I showed people a picture of my dress I would get the mandatory “But don’t you know strapless is in?!!”

I can’t stand strapless wedding dresses!

      • kellybean says:

I am also in the boat of hating strapless dresses. I am getting married…some day and have been looking at dresses online. No way am I wearing strapless but sleeved dresses are so few and far between. And I don’t want to pay a small fortune for it. Blah.

      • GoodNamesAllTaken says:

Kellybean, most wedding dress designers can add sleeves to a dress. Mine had cap sleeves originally, which are unflattering to my broad shoulders, so they made elbow length sleeves for me. Congrats and good luck.

      • Artemis says:

God, strapless is vile! This might sound OTT but I’ve hated on strapless ever since I was a teenager lol… I don’t know why, it just looks off and not flattering at all unless you’re arms and shoulders are toned and tiny. I’m not toned so I would look thicker in it than I am…

My ‘perfect’ wedding dress is gold with lots of lace, sleeves!, tiny gold belt and very loose (ethereal). Something like this for example: http://www.glendaloughmanor.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2012/11/http-simplyseattleweddings.tumblr.compost27994720792im-a-huge-fan-of-elie-saab-this-dress-might-just.jpg

      • vauvert says:

Me too! And unless you are tall, skinny and have a small bust, you end up looking like a stuffed sausage. The number of brides I have seen where I would shake my head and wonder, did they not have a three way mirror in the fitting room?
Anyway, this g,own is gorgeous and she looks fresh and lovely. The groom is very handsome too!
When I got married (second time) I decided that spending thousands on a dress for a day was stupid. Found a local dressmaker, bought my fabric, and for $700 had a custom made black and white dress inspired by Marylin’s white halter top dress, which worked well for my figure and was just one of a kind. Can still wear it to elegant parties.

      • Dani says:

I wore strapless and thought I looked pretty in a unique way 🙁 aw man

      • QQ says:

Dont Fret Dani, If/when I do It has to be sleeveless for me too, Trust, though I’d Love to pull off a Solange situation I’m too Titsy and curvy for pretty much anything else LOL

        #NoPninaTournayTho

Her dress is cute sour family expression and all

      • Dani says:

hahah thanks QQ! I’m pretty small chested but I have a pretty big butt and even bigger hips soooo. Ugh Pnina is the worst. Mine was Maggie sottero and if I were to get married again I would wear the same one,

      • Stef Leppard says:

I didn’t wear strapless either. I didn’t want to be hiking up my dress all night. I was married in the summer though so I didn’t wear long sleeves. I love Riley’s dress.

      • Mel M says:

She looks gorgeous and I love the dress.

But geez all the hate for strapless. I got married 10years ago and strapless was in but my vision was lacy with sleeves. Tried one on and I looked terrible I was so disappointed. Tried on something I never even considered, strapless a-line with a small sweetheart neckline and I thought I looked the best in it. I have broad shoulders and a shorter neck so sleeves made me feel like a linebacker and I don’t like the way I look with my hair up so even though I am not super tall and thin strapless worked the best on me and a lot of my friends who got married around the same time had strapless and I think they all looked beautiful. I think strapless looks good on just about everyone as long as its fitted right and the silhouette is right for your body type.

      • Jenna says:

I agree that strapless can be a tough look to pull off. It’s true that a strapless dress can be beautiful if it is fitted correctly but it seems that so often it is not–I have seen so many brides determined to fit into the smallest size possible and so then it just looks like their boobs are getting smushed or ready to pop up and make a run for it! It is not even really a matter of having the right figure–I am tall and fairly thin and toned, not too busty, and it is still really hard for me to find a flattering strapless dress (and then finding a good strapless bra to go underneath…blergh!). In my case, I generally deal with this problem by wearing something with a strap or a sleeve–my wedding dress did have lace cap sleeves and I thought they looked perfect. But if I were doing a winter wedding I would love something like Riley’s. Too bad I am (hopefully) done with getting married!

      • FLORC says:

This looks like my wedding dress of sleeves are shortened and hem isn’t dragging. So, yea I like it. Comfy, clean, classice lines. Can’t go wrong.

        Stef Lep
So True! Those strapless gowns can have such heavy fabric weighing it down or such tight corsets.

I won’t judge another ladies wedding cause I didn’t want to be judged 🙂

I do think she could have cracked a smile.

      • Crumpet says:

I rocked a strapless. But then I have the shoulders and build for it.

      • Sticks says:

Tough crowd! I wore strapless too at my wedding twelve years ago. Didn’t really think of it as a thing. Just loved the dress and it happened to be that way. It was a very unique dress actually and I still love it and would choose it again tomorrow.

    • Samtha says:

Agreed! I love the sleeves. Classic and stunning.

      • BooBooLaRue says:

Me too! Strapless only favors a fortunate few. Not me.

      • Jib says:

Strapless gowns are pushed by designers because they are much easier to make than any gown with sleeves. They really don’t look good on most people.

    • CynicalCeleste says:

I’m tired of people being tired of the strapless. I love sleeves, I love no sleeves and I love Delphine Manivet, but who cares? Wear what you love. The beauty of a bride is her beaming smile.

    • arabella says:

y’all should check out I Hate Strapless Wedding Dresses on Pintrest. Totally agree, the too-much-skin-at-your-wedding is getting really old… https://www.pinterest.com/sabeenandharia/i-hate-strapless-wedding-dresses/

    • Hally says:

I am so happy anytime a celebrity wears something with sleeves! It means hopefully designers will start selling more dresses with sleeves! And I don’t hate strapless, I just hate that it’s the default dress silhouette, it looks good on some people but not that great on most. Strapless is actually pretty flattering on me but I would still prefer a sleeved gown. I would feel pretty bare otherwise.
Riley looks absolutely gorgeous and I love delphine manivet, my friend was considering one of her vintage style dresses for her summer wedding. I’m guessing this extra press will make it harder to find a discounted gown now :p

    • LoveLee86 says:

Bitch stole my wedding look!! LOL same dress, same hair, hardly any makeup. It was the best decision I ever made!!! I just wanted to look different than every strapless dress I have seen the past 7 years. People were coming up to me at the reception freaking out about my sleeved lace wedding dress. I had no fake lashes, no fake nails, no fake tan, I wanted my groom to recognize me! I was once told by a very wise lady that you want to look like the best version of your everyday self on your wedding day. I recommend it to to anyone.getting married!

  2. Sabrina says:

Her dress is gorgeous and I love it.

  3. Lucy2 says:

I like it. She and her mom have the same exact hairstyle though.

  4. Kate says:

    Beautiful!

  5. Dhavynia says:

Grandma has gone too far with the plastic surgery but that is a great picture

I’m glad she’s not all about being flashy which is very refreshing, especially someone her age. You barely see long sleeves wedding dresses or even regular dresses so this is nice. I hope it lasts

  6. NewWester says:

    “Elvis’s great-grandchildren”!! Now I am feeling old

    • rylan says:

NewWester i know how u feel! I remember when Riley & Zoe were born. But time goes by so fast it only feels like a couple of years. I dont actually feel older, smarter yes, but older not really. At least that’s what i keep telling myself *eyeroll*

  7. irene14 says:

    LisaM looks great!

  8. **sighs** says:

It’s winter. In Napa. Not the warmest time or place ever.

  9. eribra says:

She looks beautiful, he looks very handsome, lovely couple.

  10. dr mantis toboggan says:

I like the dress, she looks great.

  11. Kaley says:

She’s pretty! I feel like I’ve heard about her being engaged several times but never actually going through with the wedding. Could be mixing her up with someone else.

    Good luck kiddies!

  12. mj says:

She’s actually a good actor. I loved her in Jack & Diane, but I may be in the minority here–plenty of folks on forums expressed their disdain for that movie. I thought it was charming and took the fantastical threads to be metaphorical. Anyway, I love her dress, but I loved Keira Knightley’s (recycled?) Chanel better. I’m not into weddings but I always appreciate it when someone takes a non-cookie cutter approach.

  13. Gwen says:

She looks beautiful and the dress is very pretty.

  14. Ginger says:

I actually adore her dress! It’s gorgeous and totally appropriate for a Winter wedding. I don’t know if they married outdoors or not. Napa Valley is right next to where I grew up and it can get pretty chilly in the Winter time. When I got married it was so difficult to find a gown that wasn’t either “princess poufy” or “mermaid” or strapless. I wanted something unique but couldn’t afford to have a gown made for me. I finally found the perfect gown on sale, in my size and off the rack about a month before the big day. It was a total score. I give Riley props for doing something different. They are a beautiful couple and I wish them well!

  15. bns says:

    Riley is so gorgeous.

  16. Karen says:

Love the sleeves! And it looks like it’s very nice lace work too!

The open back is very pintrest (the new sweetheart neck is an open back) but that seems to be the vibe here. And it keeps it from being too old fashioned.

I also love the hair down, its kind of like an updated version of her grandma’s wedding hair.

  17. BendyWindy says:

She used to look so much like Lisa Marie, but now the resemblance is only passing. Hopefully she looks at the picture of her with her mom and grandmother and heeds the plastic surgery cautionary tale.

  18. MrsBPitt says:

Riley is the perfect combination of her Mother and Grandmother (before plasitc surgery ruined her face)….Her hubby is adorable….Best wishes them both! They both look 15 years old to me, but thats because I’m getting old, I guess!

  19. Mellie says:

Adorable couple, beautiful dress. I imagine it was lovely.

  20. lizzie says:

it is interesting that lisa marie supposedly left scientology but her mother and the travoltas are still in the picture. i guess the whole suppressive person thing is a case by case basis?

  21. Jayna says:

Soft and pretty wedding look. I like.

They tried to undo the damage done by the plastic surgery to Lisa’s face, but it’s still not quite right. It’s sad how a beautiful woman did that to her face.

    • Christin says:

It’s particularly a shame when Lisa likely had good genetics on her side. Priscilla’s mother looked great into her 70s. Elvis’ father aged fairly well.

Cannot understand why Lisa would do anything significant to her own face after seeing what happened with her mother. Then again, Lisa may not view Priscilla as looking as ‘odd’ as we outsiders see her.

  22. OSTONE says:

    Gorgeous dress!!!

  23. Barbara Rady says:

Too funny! I got married on a Wednesday at the Little Chapel of the West in Vegas, the same chapel that her grandfather married Ann Margaret in Viva Las Vegas!

  24. Kitten says:

He’s really cute. Dress is gorgeous.

  25. Shambles says:

I love it. It’s elegant while still being a little bit bohemian. I think it really suits her and I love the earthy vibe of dress + location. OT: she has really nice hair.

  26. Dree says:

    Good looking couple! Mazel tov!

  27. bettyrose says:

I love the dress. And if money were no object for me and all my friends..I’d hold all important events on a Wednesday.

  28. AmandaPanda says:

She looks gorgeous but lol at not wearinf much makeup – she’s got LOADS on!

  29. snowflake says:

she’s really pretty, like her dress

  30. The Original Mia says:

    Gorgeous dress.

  31. Greek Chic says:

Her dress is pretty. I not into princess and over the top dresses so this is nice.
My all time favorite is Kate Moss’s Galliano dress http://www.froufroulebleu.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/02/kate_moss_wedding-vintage-inspired-wedding-kate-moss-wedding-dress-kate-moss-bridal-dress-replica-8.jpg

  32. serena says:

    Love her wedding dress!

  33. BengalCat2000 says:

My god she’s beautiful! I think I have a new girl crush! Congrats!!!

  34. Algernon says:

It’s a beautiful dress. So nice to see a wedding dress that isn’t strapless/sleeveless.

  35. OhDear says:

She looks like she could be Emma Watson’s twin sister (or Emma Watson looks like she could be Riley Keough’s twin sister).

  36. Dani says:

I got married on a Tuesday hahaha I think it’s cheaper, honestly.

  37. Beckysuz says:

I think she’s lovely. Her hair is fabulous, I’m super jealous

  38. YummyMummy says:

Gorgeous but the groom looks so young. He looks like a clean cut teenager. She is beautiful!

  39. Reece says:

    Beautiful dress! Beautiful bride!

  40. Tiffany says:

Damn, how long ago was this Mad Max film made. A couple met, dated, got engaged, planned a wedding and married.

  41. The under eyeliner is a downer

  42. TheVoice says:

She looks beautiful though I wouldn’t say she went light on the makeup. Love the hair down.

I don’t get all the hate for strapless dresses either! I wore one for my wedding and I’m pretty much flat-chested and I have broad shoulders. Not a great combo. I felt really feminine in my dress. And I tend to sweat a lot so no sleeves was a must!

I love the trend of getting away from cookie cutter weddings. The day should reflect the personality of the couple. She wanted low key and not flashy and a Wednesday wedding fit the bill.

  43. taxi says:

Simple dresses are better for weddings in rustic outdoor settings than frou-frou. Leaves, weeds & grass bits sticking in the tulle looks awful. (Lookin’ @ u AnnE.)

  44. Ravensdaughter says:

Stunning-she could be the fourth (and much needed) beautiful and charismatic woman in LOTR, especially given the rural setting. In fact, her facial expression is very Arwen-esque in the first pic!
The whole wedding sounds like it was tasteful and perfectly planned- Well done Riley!
Then there’s the picture of Riley with Lisa Marie and Priscilla…hmmmmm. Riley is youth and beauty, while Lisa Marie is aging (not gracefully-is she a smoker?), and then there Priscilla…does her face even move anymore?

  45. Velvet Elvis says:

Simple sophistication…gorgeous. Can’t help but notice though that Riley has the same resting bitch face as her mom.

  46. ande says:

Riley looks exactly like Priscilla dI’d when she was young. Priscilla was breathtakingly beautiful as a young woman, although she hasn’t aged well (obviously due to cosmetic surgeties). Same for Lisa Marie.

  47. Ice Queen says:

    I like the dress.

  48. mandygirl says:

I like the long sleeves. It is winter after all.

  49. Sassback says:

Love this dress. Sleeves need to come back. When I watch Say Yes to the Dress, I always think wtf is the point, they’re all the same fucking dress. Strapless, corseted top and that belle skirt or the mermaid skirt that is so hideous, tons of beading. I haven’t been to a wedding in the last ten years that didn’t have a unique or pretty dress-and everyone thinks they can pull off that dress too, even the thicker ladies. Horrifying.

    • Seszie says:

I totally agree! So nice when you see a bride that is true to her self, her personality. So much better than cookie cutter looks. I really like her bouquet. BHLDN and The Lane are good sites for wedding inspo. Planning mine currently. Going to do a completely different look, from the 9 million weddings I’ve been to the past few years 🙂

  50. Katie says:

I think the dress and she look very beautiful and demure. More brides should dress like this instead of trying to bare it all

  51. DeE says:

Too conservative? Weird question. Asking that about niqab, understandable; oh, and i am muslim. Asking that about this dress makes me shake my head about how modesty is no longer cherished. Women running around claiming to be dressed, yet all their goods on display. Beautiful woman dressed modestly and looking as if she feels beautiful and dare i say sexy. Kudos to U who recognize & appreciate it.

  52. Miran says:

Gorgeous dress. I love lace, long sleeves, they just stand out in the sea of strapless satiny dresses. Didn’t wear strapless for my wedding either, didn’t want to be fussing with pulling my dress up all night.

  53. Anare says:

I wore a long sleeve wedding gown too and in August. The fabric was tissue voile with inset lace. Fitted but not clingy the fabric floated gently down from the hips and had a small train. Not a ruffle, bead or sequin in sight. Dress was from 1943 worn by my Mom when she married my Dad. I loved the dress for its timeless elegance. My daughter could wear it today and look gorgeous. My fiancé at the time said it best. Just don’t wear one of those huge gowns that make the bride look like a float in a parade!
