Jude Law came very close to being cast as Superman in 2002: what?!

I have no memory of this, but apparently there was a rumor circa 2002-03 that Jude Law was being considered to play Superman. Have you heard this? I remember the build-up to the reboot of the franchise, and how disappointed people were when Brandon Routh eventually got the part. I also remember that it took a while for Routh to get cast, and the reboot went through several different directors too. But I have no memory of Jude Law being in the running. You have to remember, back in those days, Jude was a HUGE deal. He’s still a wonderful actor and he still gets a lot of work now, but Jude Law circa 2002-05 was a major celebrity/heartthrob. Anyway, during an interview with MTV’s Josh Horowitz, Jude discussed how he was also wearing the cape:

(Sidenote: Jude Law looks SO HOT in this video, right? I think he just got me pregnant.)

Jude says he kept turning down a chance to audition and all of the meetings they wanted with him to play Superman, because:

“At the time… I’m open to it now, although no one is going to ask me to play him now, I’m too old, but at the time I ahhhh, I really didn’t want to. I just sort of thought, I don’t want to spend the rest of my life being that guy who played Superman. If you ever got smoking a fag… you’ll ruin the lives of all the children around the world. I also thought about my kids, like ‘Daddy’s Superman?’ I couldn’t, I couldn’t…”

He goes on to say that Brett Ratner convinced him to just try the caped costume on and Jude did put it on and he was feeling it and he could even hear the famous Superman score in his head, but that putting the costume had a weird effect on him: he got it out of his system. He just needed to wear it once and then he was fine.

So, we’re living in a world where Jude Law was almost Superman. WHOA. I think that would have been such weird casting. And Jude’s a blondie!! Superman is supposed to have dark hair, people. Now, I would be open – and Jude sounds open to it too – to seeing Jude in some kind of superhero movie in some way. He has all of those child support payments to make too. (I wonder if his ex-girlfriend has given birth yet?)

Gosh, he is sooo incredibly beautiful. Always was, but now he’s just so much more sexy and charming.
I’d say no to him being Superman, but I would LOVE to see him star in some other superhero/mutant film. Something in which he plays a tortured soul with secret powers; and actually, he would be even hotter as the villain. Ok, excuse me while I let my mind wander…

  2. Freebunny says:

    Lol, no way.

  3. Cel says:

Jude is naturally dark-haired – in his early roles his hair is dark brown/black. He can carry off any colour.

Would love to see him play a baddie rather than a hero role.

  4. FKA Pri says:

Ahhh! Fetus Jude Law is hot!!! I was too young at the time to notice. lol. He does nothing for me now.

  5. ankitah says:

    Hell to the no.

  6. Lilacflowers says:

Can somebody please just wrap him in a full body condom immediately? For the safety of us all? Please?

  7. AustenGirl says:

Brandon Routh was perfect! The movie wasn’t great, but it certainly wasn’t his fault! I think they wanted him to be a carbon copy of Christopher Reeve–and when he nailed it, his performance was criticized for copying Christopher Reeve!

He’s playing another super hero (the Atom) on Arrow, and I’m so happy that he’s still pursuing his dreams! He is way better looking than Jude Law!

  8. Gill says:

That would have been strange casting – unless they wanted to depart drastically from the traditional image of Superman being a muscle-bound hunk, but I really don’t see how that could work. Anyway, Jude Law is too interesting an actor to play such a bland role.

  9. GlimmerBunny says:

God, vintage Jude Law was pretty. Almost INHUMANLY beautiful (similar to vintage Angelina).

  10. INeedANap says:

I think Jude looks better now with some years on him than he did when he was younger, but I don’t like pretty boys.

And I am a fan of Routh now, thanks to his turn as Ray Palmer on Arrow (although I haven’t seen yesterday’s episode!).

  11. Greek Chic says:

So pretty. I had a crush on him. I wouldn’t mind to have his babies..

  12. hadlyB says:

Whenever I watch Ripley I gasp with how gorgeous he was. I mean he still IS but back then, oh my. He was SO gorgeous.

No wonder women just dropped panty world wide. I would have too.

  13. Tiffany says:

Jude and Angie need to do another film together. That sea movie she is doing with Brad I feel Jude would have been a better choice.

Also, Josh Horowitz really is the only saving grace for MTV.

  14. Beckysuz says:

He was and is so beautiful. But he is much too slender to play superman. I’m not sure he could change his body enough, even with crazy exercise, to be superman bulky

  15. J.Mo says:

    Hey Jude. How YOU doin?

  16. Ferdinand says:

I guess when you think about the fact that Nicolas Cage was also thisclose to play the part, Jude Law doesn’t sound such a a bad idea.

Oh my god! I love some vintage Jude Law!
I’m glad he didn’t get to play a hero movie (yet), he’d be tied down one way or another and I want him be a character actor.
