Cate Blanchett v. Lily James: who had the best look at the ‘Cinderella’ premiere?

Here are some photos of the ladies at last night’s LA premiere of Cinderella. I imagine this is going to be big with little girls around the world – isn’t Cinderella one of the most beloved of all the fairy tales? And I think they got the casting right on this film too – Helena Bonham Carter as the fairy godmother (Helena wasn’t at this premiere though) and Cate Blanchett as the Wicked Stepmother. Cate was not all that impressive at the premiere, I have to admit. Granted, it was always going to be ALL ABOUT Lily James/Cinderella in princess couture, but I feel like Cate sort of phoned it in with this Céline look. That necklace seems poorly considered too. Maybe I just don’t “get” it. Maybe it’s too sophisticated for me.

As for Lily James, she wore this lovely Elie Saab gown which made her look like a princess. And remember how Louboutin made Angelina Jolie and Elle Fanning special themed shoes for Maleficent? Yes, they’re still doing that – Lily is wearing special Cinderella-themed Louboutins. Bonus Richard Madden/Robb Stark!

Another Downton Abbey lady was cast in the film too – Sophie McShera, also known as Daisy the undercook. Sophie plays one of the stepsisters and she wore this Andrew Gn Resort 2015 gown. The color is too bold for my liking, but I think she’s adorable, so I’ll give her a pass.

Ohhh I love the green dress on the cook from downton abbey. Cinderella’s look is pretty but nothing we haven’t seen a million times already. I agree that Cate phoned it in – cool necklace tho.

    • Lilacflowers says:

It’s nice to see “Daisy” dressed up

    • charlie says:

I like Sophie’s look the best. And I think she’s 30! She looks so young, like a teenager. She had a role in Galavant, and she and the little cook were so aodrable together.
Jenna Louise Coleman, Richard’s girlfriend was there too, and she looked great.

      • EC says:

I know! I was watching Downton and at some point checked out her IMDB page and was SHOCKED to see she was 30. She just has such a young look to her! And I agree, I like her look the best.

    • Stoner says:

I don’t think Cate phoned it in so much as she let a young star have the spotlight.

I am Cate’s age and would wear what she’s wearing in a heartbeat!

      • EC says:

Good point. That necklace is INCREDIBLE too. The more I look at it the more I think it is 5 star jewelry p0rn.

      • Stacey Dresden says:

Agreed. It is a little demure (no cleavage/shoulder) but the necklace brings it all together for me. Clean and interesting.

      • GingerCrunch says:

^^^ YOU 3 are my people!

  2. Lilacflowers says:

There is 7 feet of snow outside my window. Sophie’s green floral dress looks like paradise to me. Lily’s is very princessy. Cate looks like she’s at a completely different event.

    • GoodNamesAllTaken says:

I was going to say they don’t look like they’re going to the same event at all.

  3. Virgilia Coriolanus says:

I am in love with those SHOES..wow!

I’m not so sure that this version of “Cinderella” will do so well, but maybe I’m wrong and it’ll make a mint. I just don’t understand what’s so different about it, from the original. As in why make another, high budget movie that is the exact same movie as the original???

    • TeaAndSympathy says:

Perhaps it will have a different ending? That dippy prince spends all night dancing with the ravishing Cinderella, and not only does he neglect to get her name and address, but the twat cannot even remember what she looks like, hence the need for all the towns’ girls to try on the glass slipper… What a gronk.

    • Rachel says:

There’s a Frozen short film premiering with Cinderella. So I think Disney also had doubts about Cinderella’s success and hedged their bet. Kids will bug the crap out of their parents to go see the new Frozen “movie” which is all of 7 minutes long. Then they’re stuck watching Cinderella.

    • Irishserra says:

I’m not so sure either. I think I was just hoping for something darker. But Cinderella was always my favorite classic story, so I will just enjoy the ride. Can’t wait to see it!

      • Virgilia Coriolanus says:

I mean, the story is nice and all (I loved Hunchback of Notre Dame more when I was a kid), but there is literally nothing different (at least from what we’ve been told/shown) about this movie and the original. So why would Disney spend all that money, just to make the exact same movie? With “Maleficent” it was a reimagining, etc…..they could’ve done the same with Lady Tremaine…..

    • Lia says:

I got a chance to see the movie last week at a sneak peek. It’s awesome, not at all childish, and had the audience laughing and crying. It’s beautifully filmed, and I think it’s probably going to do very well 🙂

      • mom2two says:

I am glad to read this! You are so lucky you were able to see this. I am excited for this one.

  4. AlmondJoy says:

Lily James looks amazing! Sophie McShera does too. They both took risks. Cate Blanchett… her look bores me to tears. I usually feel the same about everything she wears, though.

  5. DavidBowie says:

I love Cate’s outfit. The other two look nice.

    • Sugar says:

Cate looks AMAZING. She is always so chic. Love the sleek, architectural quality of her look. I enjoy the themed looks the ladies are wearing. Lily is a princess, Sophie’s look is what the ugly stepsister would choose, and Cate is in a variation of the 1940s styles she wears in the film.

I’m tempted to see this movie just for the costumes.

    • lirko says:

I love it, too. It fits beautifully. Simple and chic…she does it so well.

  6. smee says:

I actually love CB’s outfit, but I can see where it might not be for everyone. The cut of the sleeves with the column skirt is fantastic, but the necklace is a bit clunky. I also love that she let Cinderella be the princess at the premiere – class act.

    • FLORC says:

I don’t hate Cate’s outfit. It’s just a poor chaoice for this premiere.
This movie is so Grand and Theatrical! That the stars really glammed it up and went full on princess is perfect. Cate appears to have not cared.

And Cate is gorgeous. She could make a sack look chic. This look isn’t terrible. It’s just not even minimum good for this carpet.

And omg those shoes! I want sparkly princess shoes!
If I could ever find an occasion to wear that dress and those shoes I would wear it until they disintegrated. Or the clock hit 12 strokes.

      • MinnFinn says:

Correct me if I’m wrong, but I had long believed that actors do not choose what they wear to their film premiers. The premier outfits are as carefully planned as the costumes their wear in the film and the director approves all the film and premier costumes, no?

  7. dr mantis toboggan says:

Those shoes …. They are so beautiful I’m close to tears

  8. INeedANap says:

the see through pockets on Lily’s dressed we’re a terrible idea. It’s a very strange optical illusion that just makes it look like she has a thin layer of flesh over her dress. Odd.

    • MinnFinn says:

+1 Those transparent pockets are strange. Everything else about this Cinderella premier dress is quintessential modern Cinderalla though.

  9. Veritas says:

Lily looks like a princess with real glass slippers. Cate is a disappointment. I don’t like this outfit either. It looks very nun-ish to me. Usually she can pull off anything even if it’s not really good outfit. Just being honest. But still all hail queen cate who can do no wrong fashion wise.

    • TeaAndSympathy says:

Well, then, Veritas, you’ll be able to enjoy her all the more soon. It was announced on the Sydney news tonight that CB, her husband and children will be making a move to the US.

She lost me when she became tongue-tied and accepted a job offer from Woody Allen.

  10. Beckysuz says:

Ahhhhh, I’m in love with that dress. Lily James looks gorgeous and that dress is stunning.

  11. Loulou says:

Kind of obsessed with the shoes…

  12. Mzizkrizten says:

I feel like Cinderella should be more smiley?

    • smcollins says:

I was thinking the same thing. She’s thisclose to doing a sexy face. It’s your big premiere, girl. Smile! Still looks gorgeous, though. And those shoes are to die for!

      • esthetix says:

Maybe I’m not used to her face yet, but I was like “Why is JLo at this event?”

  13. GlimmerBunny says:

The photo with Lily (and her AMAZING dress) and Robb Stark is almost too much pretty in one picture for me to handle!

    • mom2two says:

Seriously! And Dakota Johnson and Jamie Dornan could take a cue from them about on and offscreen chemistry.
I thought Lily’s style was on point: loved the hair, makeup, dress and the shoes.
Richard is my Tom Hiddleston/Cumberbatch…so naturally I thought he was gorgeous. I know CB doesn’t follow this crowd often…but Richard Madden has been dating Jenna Coleman (Clara on Doctor Who) for 3 years or more, he is also very good friends with Matt Smith (Eleventh Doctor) who is now dating Lily James for the past year. Matt was not on this red carpet but has been at the Berlin showing of the film and the red carpet in Milan.
And Richard and Lily will be re-teaming for a Kenneth Branagh stage production of Romeo and Juliet in 2016.
I can’t wait to see Cinderella. I liked Cate Blanchett’s look. Elegant and classy. You should have seen her dress and shoes in Berlin. Only she could carry that off well!

  14. Tig says:

I get the guy is attractive- but looks way too old to be Prince Charming – maybe Prince C Emeritus? Loved the ball gowns. Agreed that Kate B phoned this in- her costumes from the film look amazing!

  15. lucy2 says:

I like Cate’s look, but it is underdone for this event, especially in comparison with Lily, who is overdone.
Are those sheer pockets? It gives a very creepy effect. I generally like a lot of Elie Saab gowns in the past few years, but this one isn’t doing it for me. Though I like those shoes better than the Malificent ones which always looked painful.

  16. Ginger says:

Yay for the Downton ladies! And Cate and Helena to boot. I may actually have to see this! (I’m not a huge Disney fan). Angelina was the reason I went to see Maleficent and I enjoyed that too.

  17. a cut above says:

Definitely in the minority here, but I love Lily’s princess dress. So pretty. And Cate looks elegant, if unremarkable.

Not a fan of the green dress, though. I like the color, but the pattern looks like fabric ripped from my grandmother’s curtains.

  18. GingerCrunch says:

Cate is my QUEEN (of style), so I saw this and swooned. It’s the antithesis of red carpet looks and that’s why I love it and her. Covet the necklace, too.

    Lily James is stunning. Wow.

  19. FKA Pri says:

So, dress pockets where the dress is transparent ( and the hands can be seen) is the new fad now?

  20. spaniard says:

Lily James’ look is amazing (shoes included). Also the girl is a stunner. Cate Blanchett’s look is too boring, I always love her style but lately… at the Oscars her gown was super boring too.

Richard Madden is the perfect choice for a Prince Charming. Classic handsome type of guy. He does nothing for me but I admit he’s very handsome.

  21. Lucy says:

All the ladies look great!! And the shoes are amazing.

  22. JH says:

You bite your tongue! Cate looks flawless!

  23. Abby says:

I love the Downton ladies looks! Ahh those shoes!!

Gotta be honest, I thought Cate was wearing Birkenstocks for a second…. Her outfit would be good for another event. Like a library opening.

  24. Twinkle says:

Cate’s necklace looks to be a tiger eye and black onyx(?) pendant in white gold and diamonds. It’s a bold, fabulous piece. She understands jewelry.

  25. I Choose Me says:

Cate looks like she’s going to a different event than her co-stars. This outfit is rare miss for her I think. She looks, dare I say, sloppy?

  26. santana says:

whoa! I thought she was Robin Wright from the picture! It’s uncanny how they lookalike, they could be playing twins, evil twins and that’s a movie I’d pay to watch. And would get plenty of Oscars

  27. erinn says:

I love the green dress. There’s a line from Rodgers and Hammerstein’s musical version of “Cinderella”, which describes the jealous stepsisters as turning “a queer sort of sour apple green”.

Seems like a decent colour shout out to evil jealous stepsisters.

  28. msd says:

Sophie looks fab, she’s my mvp at the premiere. Colour, pattern, volume! So charmingly Spring like too. She’s got everything I missed on the world’s dullest Oscar red carpet last week. Lily looks very pretty, nothing too exciting but I think she was expected to dress like a princess with all the kids attending. I love Cate’s necklace but dislike the top. It’s very sophisticated but perhaps too low key. She looks super-tired here. Like she just flew between LA and Australia twice in the space of a week (she possibly did).
