Cate Blanchett will be moving her family to LA, after years in Australia

Cate Blanchett has been in LA for more than a week. She came to LA during Oscar weekend, attended a few events and presented at the Oscars. She stuck around to promote Cinderella, and I’m including some photos of Cate outside of the ABC Studios at the bottom of the post (in addition to the header pic, from Sunday night’s Cinderella premiere).

Here’s something interesting: Cate and her family are moving to LA permanently. Isn’t that weird? Cate and her family have never lived permanently in America. For a while, early in Cate’s film career, they lived in London. Then they moved to Australia and made Sydney their homebase. But Cate’s husband, Andrew Upton, told the Sydney Morning Herald that they will move to LA later this year, when their joint tenure at the Sydney Theatre Company comes to an end. He makes it sound like Cate wants to do more TV and film projects (and less theater) and he wants to do more freelance writing – go here to read his interview.

Meanwhile, Cate was on Jimmy Kimmel Live last night. Here’s one part, where she talks about playing a wicked character and how fun it is:

And she finally sort of explains why she told Julia Roberts to “Hashtag Suck It” at the 2014 Oscars:

That is odd. I thought Cate was like Tilda Swinton, in demand but not in LA. Didn’t she also buy an island in the South Pacific?

Although, I am sure that there are a lot of Aussies in LA, and the climate won’t be a shock.

Cate’s actually been doing a lot of more mainstream movies lately – Cinderella, The Hobbit, Monuments Men. I don’t know if she’s clamored for as a leading lady, but I suspect there are a lot of supporting parts she’s considered for.

The Sydney Morning Herald article states that they’ll be moving to the U.S. and doesn’t specifically mention Los Angeles. They could have other options in mind.

I think after Blue Jasmine – rave/career best reviews, huge box office and an Oscar to top it all off – she has gone from “the most talented actress of her generation” to “the most talented actress of her generation who can now parlay that into leading roles.” For a while there, she was doing fine with leading roles but she was really hit and miss in terms of the film getting great reviews/doing well at the B.O. Her performances tend to always be singled out but it seems like Blue Jasmine was the perfect storm of great overall reception, B.O, and career best reviews. I’m excited to see what she does next – especially Todd Haynes “Carol.”

I read the interview and I think he means that HE would like to work in American television (writing, directing episodes) and film. I can’t see Cate turning to tv, aside from perhaps a prestige HBO miniseries.

Unless the children are homeschooled – it will make a huge impact on her son’s. They will have to leave behind their friends.

I love Cate but I am a bit apprehensive about her being able to pull of wicked stepmother role. I don’t think she can be deliciously evil like Angelina’s Maleficent.

Plus as far as I know this movie is going up against Fast and furious 7 opening weekend. Not a brilliant idea from Disney.

    • Ashley says:

Disney has a built in audience- children. And parents will always take their kids to see child friendly movies. I’m sure the studio is not worried at all.

    • Mom2two says:

It is not going up against Furious 7 for an opening weekend ( at least not in the US). Cinderella opens March 13 and Furious 7 opens April 3.

Cate has gotten great reviews so far for her role in Cinderella.

      Watch her in Hanna.

I would have thought NY if they wanted to move to the States. I wonder if there’s a TV show in the works that just hasn’t been announced yet.

    • Sassy says:

Why would someone from Australia with beaches and sun want to move to NYC? The mystique of NYC is highly over rated.

He says it”s won’t be permanent just temporary so it’s just looking for work for him and of course Cate and the kids are coming as well. Sydney is still their home base as he said.

Her interview with Jimmy Kimmel was painful to watch. She appears to be such a caustic, aggressive woman. And trying to impress Kimmel and an LA audience with all her reminiscences about doing theatre (didn’t fly).

Wasn’t impressed. And her story about her post nasal drip was disgusting. She’s a bit of a redneck isn’t she?

Sometimes I have real trouble understanding a mentality in Hollywood that values womens’ likeability (a nebulous concept at best, and hard to achieve if you are better at your job than other people and not trying to hide it) over their talent. She’s a damned good actress, that much is for sure.

    • qwerty says:

Yeah. SO MANY of the most successful male actors are known to be straight up a$$holes.

      • qwerty says:

Then again, it’s a symptom of a bigger problem. We expect women to be nice, bring comfort, blah blah blah. No one puts that expectation on men.

    Sigh… why can’t I be you, Cate?

    Sigh. Love Cate.

I think she is a fabulous actress and I just love her voice – she has a great, deep voice!

She’s started doing more film now. Her theatre work was local, very family friendly and easy to fit in with kids but film isn’t, not when you live in Australia. Her hubby described it as an adventure so it doesn’t appear to be permanent. A few years based in the US makes sense for her career. They didn’t say LA though. Maybe San Francisco as she said she loved it after Blue Jasmine (close to Hollywood without actually being Hollywood).

Also, when they lived in the UK it was Brighton, not London. I think they’ll go for somewhere less obvious than LA or NY.
