Adam Driver: ‘I’ve had more opportunities than other people have, unjustly’

AD1

I don’t really have a problem with Adam Driver, I’m just not into him on a gut (or pants) level. His interviews are actually interesting and he has a nice body, but… well, I’m not into him. Still, I’m happy to see an actor “make it” in Hollywood with unconventional looks. Trying to care about interchangeable pretty boys gets tedious after a while, and I could see Driver becoming a modern version of the 1970s leading man archetype, like Dustin Hoffman and Gene Hackman and such.

Anyway, Driver covers the new issue of VMAN. You can see more of the editorial here. As I said… nice body. Really nice body, actually. He can’t wear a tuxedo though – he looks like a dirt-lipped 17 year old on his way to the prom. Here are some highlights from his cover interview:

The search for meaning: “As you get older and life starts to happen more, why not go down to the bottom as much as possible? But there can also be a danger in trying to find meaning in acting, which I’m also learning: that you take it way too seriously, and yourself too seriously. That’s a tricky thing: How do you take it so seriously that your stakes are life and death, but at the end of the day you can let it go? Talking to older actors, they never seem to figure it out.

He acknowledges his privilege: “It’s a little surreal. I love Scorsese and Spielberg—I probably watch Jaws twice a year. To work with them is a little out of body. It’s obviously extremely flattering, and weird. I’m a straight, white male, and I’ve had more opportunities than other people have, unjustly. And I’ve been lucky on top of that.

Hollywood’s slow pace: “It’s so insane to me. That’s why I like being a part of Girls, because it’s such a female-driven show. I see so many actors and friends who are so f–king good—but for one reason or another, because they’re female or African American, there aren’t as many opportunities for them. It’s total bullsh-t. My wife is an actress. She’s had to audition for, you know, “Blonde Girl #3.” There’s just such sh–ty writing and not as many opportunities.

Being married to an actress: “We’re both figuring it out. I value privacy and it’s impossible to say that without sounding like a total pretentious a–hole. Losing anonymity is a real thing and it makes your job difficult because when you are what people are looking at, you start thinking about yourself as opposed to taking things in. And selling who you are as a person doesn’t make sense to me. At the same time, you almost want to figure out a way to leverage some of it and do something good. My wife and I run a nonprofit, Arts and the Armed Forces, where we do monologues from contemporary American plays and do readings for a diverse military audience.

[From VMAN]

He’s also given an opportunity to defend (or slam, I suppose) Lena Dunham and he doesn’t take it, saying that he never even watches Girls because he just finds it difficult to watch himself. I don’t think he really wants to get involved with Lena’s politics or her controversies either way – he’s grateful for the job, but it’s just a job. And I like him more for acknowledging his privilege. Don’t you? I’m not asking white guys to beat themselves up because they don’t understand the struggle or whatever, but it’s nice to see a guy who is aware of enough to say, “Huh, I have so many more opportunities as an artist/person because I’m a white guy.”

I believe he is the only talented actor in that sloppy show with Lena Dunham. He seems pretty humble too unlike almost all his costars.
I wouldn’t say handsome.. but he is so much better than anybody else on the show. They’re all so ugly and sad. I’ve watched ‘Girls’ a few times but I always ended up depressed.

    • Renee says:

This is the second comment of yours that has made me laugh on this morning that finds me extremely grumpy. Thank you!!!

      • paola says:

        ahah!
I feel quite creative today. It’s afternoon for me so I already had my grumpy morning and crap to deal with!

    • Charlie says:

Say what you want about Lena, but I think she’s talented. Did she get a LOT of help to get where she is now? Yes, but some talent is there. I also think Zosia isn’t a bad actress either.

    • QQ says:

Yeah Paola Girls Is like.. hatewatch in that these people are THE WORST as a group and individually

But yeah Driver is both Talented AND Ugly-Hot to the max… a Brown Bag Special if you would

      • paola says:

Exactly! Hatewatch is the perfect word.
They are so sad and depressing. And Lena’s urge of always getting out of her clothes is really something.
Geeesh keep it to yourself girl. No one wants to see that, plus she has the WORST taste in shoes. If i was in her wardrobe i’d burn most of the stuff.

      • Katenotkatie says:

“A brown bag special, if you would…” Lol I just choked on my coffee.

      • homegrrrl says:

Yes, thankyou, ugly hot, confident arse face. Love it.

    • EC says:

I agree – I think he is really talented. I just watched “This Is Where I Leave You” on a plane which I didn’t even know was a movie until I saw it. The movie is pretty forgettable, but Adam is so charismatic and has a incredible presence on the screen. The movie has a great cast – Jason Bateman, Jane Fonda, Tina Fey – but to me Adam is the most memorable and enjoyable part of the movie.

I like what he says here. Plus he is legitimately tall, which I enjoy in my men. I’m becoming a fan.

      • Tiffany :) says:

I agree. I don’t find him physically that hot…but he is so talented and very charismatic, which makes him hot to me. I’m like that with guys in real life too, though. Maybe I am just an odd duck. 😉

    • qwerty says:

Marnie’s bf was hot. You know the one, with dark short hair, a programmer or something. The only hot person on the show imo.

    • gabe says:

I find him strangely f*ckable. Maybe it’s because all the weird shit his character was into in girls.

  2. Anna says:

These pictures look kind of creepy. These look like graduation photos of the president of the high school math club of the 1970 graduating class. They’re making me uncomfortable but I can’t look away

  3. Charlie says:

I don’t find him particularly hot, but I really like the way he comes across in interviews. He has a good head on his shoulders.

  4. mark says:

Yes we all have it easy, we’re all like Donald Trump, happy?

Plus this a celebrity blog so you’re apart of the cycle, why not cover non-white celebrities. I only ever see the same people on this site Jennifer Lawrence or Ben Cumberbatch. Give some other people publicity instead of posting a story about a Kardashian, why not post some stuff about John Boyega or Michael B Jordan.

    • pem says:

      *sigh* #notallwhiteguys, amirite?

    • GoodNamesAllTaken says:

How often do you read this blog? They cover non- white celebrities every single day. What are you talking about?

    • Tiffany says:

When Star Wars and Fantastic Four comes around, we will see more of them.

    • paola says:

I think you’re reading this site through your tequila goggles.

Just flick through the articles and you’ll see it yourself. Lupita, Kanye West, Mindy kaling, Bill Cosby, Will Smith, Idris Elba, Dev Patel, and the list goes on and on.

This is one of the most inoffensive and open minded celebrity blog out there. People here don’t offend each other and we’re all open to discussion and confrontation.
Honestly, you should read before writing something like that.

Plus the authors cover celebrities that are hot right this minute for some reason, despite their age, color or gender. To cover some random non white person for the sake of it sounds more racist than anything else.

  5. ccinkissimmee says:

I’m about to Google him.. is he related to Minnie Driver? I thought that’s what he meant about him being privileged.

    • Dree says:

Not at all, he is talking about it from being white and being married to a female actress i guess. He went to Julliard, and worked in the theatre before he had his break on Girls. He probably knows lots of skilled, excellent actors that aren’t as successful as him.

    • AntiSocialButterfly says:

His Juilliard app was rejected, and he joined the marines! Got a med discharge after sternal fracture then reapplied & was accepted. He is a dude from a Baptist family in Indiana. i linked a nice GQ article slightly upthread.

      • Dree says:

I don’t if you read it wrong or if the journalist had it wrong i haven’t read it.
But its widely known he went to Julliard after he was in the marines.
Heres a link to the Juilliard website, they did a Q and A with him some time ago.
        http://www.juilliard.edu/journal/qa-adam-driver?destination=node/20837

      • AntiSocialButterfly says:

        Here ya go! http://www.gq.com/entertainment/celebrities/201409/adam-driver

“Driver’s parents didn’t know much about his acting in high school, either—not that it was all that important then. Appearing in a production of Oklahoma! just seemed like a good way to meet girls. But it’s indicative of his tendency toward extremes that once he began considering it as a career, he saw only two paths available. “It was like the South Bend Civic Theatre,” he says with distaste, “or Juilliard.” He applied to the latter and didn’t get in. And that, for a while, was that
(paragraph skip, talk of him joining marines after 9/11, going through training )
Driver never made it to war. Two years in, he broke his sternum on a cheapo mountain bike and soon after was medically discharged, an outcome that still “fuckin’ kills me,” he says. “To not get to go with that group of people I had been training with was…painful.”
He moved back to Indiana, but he was restless and depressed. “I wanted a challenge,” he says. Driver’s thoughts wandered again to Juilliard. “The Marine Corps is supposed to be the toughest and most rigorous of its class,” he says. And in a similar way, Juilliard was the toughest in its class. “Obviously the stakes are different,” he says. “You have the risk of getting shot or killed in one and just embarrassed in the other. I thought, ‘This will be easy.’ ” He was working as a security guard at a warehouse in Mishawaka when he heard he’d been accepted

So, yes, you are correct that he did enroll in Juilliard after ( a medical discharge from) the Marines. The GQ interview reveals that he applied and was rejected *before* joining the Marines, then *reapplied after* his discharge (a second time) which was when he was accepted and became a student.

        Probably should read it.

  6. Loopy says:

Very different looking, kind of like a weird looking Keanu.

    • Catelina says:

I also thought of Keanu! Anyways, I think he’s kind of talented but he plays the same character in everything Ive seen him in. Seems like a pretty cool guy though

  7. The Original G says:

It’s refreshing to hear from one of these people, that yes, they’re talented and they work hard, but the are also very very very lucky.

  8. Dree says:

ADAM!!! I love him! Sexy as hell! And such an interesting man.

    • Dubios says:

That body!! His storyline is also really interesting this season.

      • Lauren says:

Adam is the only reason I continue to watch Girls.
He has an amazing acting range – emotional, crude, silly, paternal, sexy, vulnerable – Adam can do anything.
I love watching him run too. Adam is beautiful in motion.

  9. Nev says:

    Gorgeous man. Yum. Great cover.

  10. Kiddo says:

I never heard of him before. He mentioned Scorsese and Spielberg, what films were they?

    • Dree says:

He was in Spielbergs Lincoln, he is filming the new scorsese movie this year. He is also in the last two noah baumbachs movies, the new star wars and he already worked with the cohen brothers. He is really working with all the best directors.

      • Kiddo says:

Thanks Dree! Which Cohen Brother’s movie? He has an interesting look.

      • Dree says:

“Inside Llewyn Davis”, with the equally brilliant Oscar Isaac.

      • Kiddo says:

I LOVE Oscar Isaac (and I thought Inside Llewyn Davis was a great film, that was underrated). Maybe that’s why I missed seeing Driver.

      • Kitten says:

I wouldn’t call Inside Llewyn Davis a “great” film but I do think it was really good and I agree that Isaac is a special kind of talent.

Driver is always such an interesting interview. I’m not attracted to him but he looks fantastic without his shirt on.

      • Kiddo says:

I thought it was great in the sense that my emotions were completely muddled after seeing it and that I had to ‘work that out’ and talk about it. To me, that is a great piece of art.

      • mia girl says:

I thought it was great because of Timberlake.

      • mia girl says:

        Ha! Just kidding.

But seriously, I really liked the film too. The music was great, Isaac is great and it definitely had that Cohen Brothers vibe to it… maybe with just a little more neurosis.

      • Miss Jupitero says:

        And Frances Ha!

He’s doing extraordinarily well as an actor. He’s getting all of the roles that far prettier actors are not getting. This, and I think he is the best part of Girls. I see oscars in this future, easily.

    • Lilacflowers says:

He was in Frances Ha, This is where I leave you, J. Edgar with Leo DiCaprio, and he popped up in Tracks with Mia Wasikova. He’s becoming the go to “that guy.”

  11. Miss Jupitero says:

Not what I would call “hot guy,” but after awhile hot guys get a bit dull. I like his mibd, I like the observations he makes, and I like him. And yeah, he does have that Keanu thing going on a bit.

  12. Talie says:

His man boobs are little weird in that pic though.

  13. Down and Out says:

I can’t not think about David Fincher’s burn every time I see this guys name.

  14. Lilian says:

He looks kinda creepy, with a white hair wig he would make a very convincing Bob from Twin Peaks.

  15. Hannah says:

I don’t know if I would compare him to Hackman and hoffman he’s got more sex appeal than that.
He’s ugly beautiful like a young mick jagger.

  16. Jenny says:

He’s ugly beautiful like a young Mick Jagger. Sexy boy IMO.

  17. Bridget says:

I find him so unappealing, I don’t understand why he’s supposed to be a ‘next big thing’. At. All.

And yes, I actually clicked on this article to specifically say that. I am clearly sick.

  18. sighhhh says:

    Love him.

  19. Pip says:

    @ Bridget
I don’t understand how anyone in their right mind can find otterbatch physically attractive, redmayne looks like a cute little lesbian, hiddleston is just an average looking guy but apparently they have a rather big female following…
I’d take this guy over them, he’s kind of weird but hot at the same time! Hes got a great body too.

    • Bridget says:

Nope on Cumberbatch (I will never understand the obsession there) and Redmayne (his lips are too weird for me) and Hiddleston seems nice enough but like some dude everyone knows a version of. But still a big NO on Adam Driver. I couldn’t stand him on Girls and he is just so unappealing in real life. I’d need the biggest set of beer goggles in the world to make that happen.

  20. Lady L says:

    Poor self-hating fool.

  21. Mispronounced Name Dropper says:

“I’m not asking white guys to beat themselves up because they don’t understand the struggle”

White guys is a broad term. There’re plenty of white guys who know all about struggle and the privilege enjoyed by white guys at the big end of town shouldn’t diminish that.

  22. Livan says:

I think he’s hot! Cumberbatch or Hiddleston doesn’t do it for me at all, but Adam yum! I had to comment, more comments for Adam means more posts! 🙂

  23. Anastasia Beaverhausen says:

he looks like a dirt-lipped 17 year old on his way to the prom. NAILED IT KAISER

  24. LAK says:

It’s the craziest thing, but he has a passing resemblance to Keanu Reeves!!!!

  25. wow says:

Ohhhh, so this is who he is. I saw him on tv trailer and wondered who he was.

Hmmm…yes…to all of him…minus the wife. Lol.

  26. katethegreat says:

I feel like if he were a kick ass musician we wouldn’t be questioning whether or not he is hot.
