Sony will reboot an all-male ‘Ghostbusters’ starring Channing Tatum, why?

Bill Murray

Say it with me now: “Alright, this chick is toast!

That’s the message coming down from Sony with their newly christened all-male Ghostbusters reboot. This news follows the announcement of the all-female film starring Melissa McCarthy and Kristen Wiig. I’d roll my eyes at the obviousness of this move, but Bill Murray’s probably doing it already. Ernie Hudson must be thrilled after protesting the all-woman cast, calling it “a bad idea” unless “it’ll be sexy.

The dudes called up the big guns. Channing Tatum will probably lead the Bro-Busters. Ivan Reitman and Dan Aykroyd will produce. Joe and Anthony Russo (Captain America: The Winter Soldier) will direct, and Drew Pearce (Iron Man 3, Mission: Impossible 5) will write the screenplay. Deadline has much more about this new “universe,” but here’s an excerpt:

Sony Pictures is broadening the Ghostbusters franchise and the first order of business will be an action-centric comedy that is a counterpart to the Paul Feig-directed film that will start production in June. The studio is simultaneously forming Ghostcorps, a new production company whose principals include original Ghostbusters architects Ivan Reitman and Dan Aykroyd; they will have offices at Sony with the mission to scare up branding opportunities based on the 1984 comedy classic.

This is being put together even as the studio moves to the start line with a Ghostbusters reboot that will be directed by Feig and star his Bridesmaids leads Kristen Wiig and Melissa McCarthy, and Saturday Night Live stand outs Leslie Jones and Kate McKinnon.

[From Deadline]

Ivan Reitman tells Deadline that plans for a Bro-Busters movie have been gestating forever. Obviously! Dan Aykroyd’s entire existence has been devoted to more Ghostbusters. He hounded poor Bill Murray for decades. Yet nothing happened for the guys until the women got their own movie. Only then did plans come together for a band of bros. Reitman says the films will work together, but it’s still a lousy move. Couldn’t they at least wait for the women to film their movie first?

We’ll see dreamcasting lists in the near future, so I’ll start now. Channing Tatum will likely star, which means Jonah Hill will want a piece. Shia LaBeouf’s name was once floated, but he might be too messy. Maybe Vince Vaughn, since he’s got nothing going on anymore. Ernie Hudson? Sure. Oh, and why not “think outside the box” and add a meathead — Joe Manganiello. Done.

Why? Let the girls get their glory for ONCE!! Stupid stupid move.

  2. Chichi says:

    Why is this ok?

  3. Lilacflowers says:

We do not need another Ghostbusters movie, male or female. or mixed.

    • PunkyMomma says:

Agreed. No new ideas in Hollywood, anymore.

    • Samtha says:

      Agreed. Leave Ghostbusters alone!

    • Kiddo says:

I know, right? How about an original idea?

    • Debbie says:

Thank you! Didn’t need the all female and certainly don’t need the all male cast. Let the movies live in the 80s vhs archives.

    • QQ says:

I agree this is infuriating really, the way they speak to the dumbest common childish contingent of movie watchers, the naked greed to do remakes or exploit BS 80s nostalgia is THE WORST

    • Beth says:

Agreed. Not excited for the male or female version. Blockbuster franchises are getting extremely tiresome.

    • Happy21 says:

Not at all. I don’t really want these movies to be made. Let the original be the classic it is and leave it alone!

    • Stef Leppard says:

      STOP TRYING TO RUIN GHOSTBUSTERS!

STOP TRYING TO RUIN THE MOVIES AND TV SHOWS OF MY CHILDHOOD WITH HIDEOUS REBOOTS!!

*lowers megaphone and steps off soapbox*

    • fritanga says:

A male Ghostbusters might be OK if they actually used great comic actors as they did in the original. Instead they’re going for Channing “Human Baked Potato” Tatum and Jonah “Fat Mess” Hill because the kids can’t understand dry, snarky humor these days and need their moronic beefcake/chubby douche “humor” to “crack them up” between explosions and CGI tricks.

      Yeah, it’s going to suck.

    • Santolina says:

+1 This is the bigger point.

      • fritanga says:

Yeah. Think of what a rebooted all male Ghostbusters might be like if they cast real comic actors such as Taran Killam, or Adam Scott, or Bill Hader, or even freaking Andy Samberg or Kevin Hart (or British/Irish guys like James Corden or Richard Ayoade or Chris O’Dowd). You know – actors who are intrinsically FUNNY and have worked hard at being so, and are not laughable solely because they show their man-bulges or huge stomachs onscreen.

  4. Luca76 says:

How about they come up with and original story that doesn’t have a superhero in the script and passes the Bechtel test.

    Yeah right.

    • Sugar says:

Agreed. All we need is another movie with few to no female characters. TV is only marginally more female-centric. I tried to watch “Better Call Saul” because I loved “Breaking Bad” but there are no females in the series (at least in the first few episodes) so I think I’m out.

      • deehunny says:

@Sugar– It definitely is male dominated, but there is a central female character that is an attorney (perhaps love interest? That part is somewhat unclear).

    • vauvert says:

This is why I adore Wes and his original, offbeat, quirky movies. Mind you, I love what Marvel is doing, but other than that, the constant stream of reboots is driving me crazy and I don’t plan to watch any of them, not Jurrasic or Ghostbusters or whatever. Continuing a series like SW is one thing, redoing the same stuff is lazy, uninspired and boring.
Not sure who is making Eddie Redmayne’s new movie, sounds fantastic (first transgender operation if I am correct?)

      • Beth says:

        @vauvert

The director for Eddie’s new movie (The Danish Girl) is Tom Hooper. He won a Best Director Oscar for The King’s Speech, and also directed Les Miserables. I’m not a fan of his but agree the story sounds interesting and he has a good track record of getting great performances from his actors/actresses and snagging them Oscar nominations.

  5. Dani2 says:

    Who asked for this?

  6. Ginger says:

The ONLY reason I was on board with a Ghostbusters remake was the unique angle of an all female team. Making a reboot with an all male cast is unoriginal and ridiculous if you already have the remake on tap with the female cast. I don’t get it. This sounds like a messy failure in the making.

    • Gill B says:

Agree completely. This may explain why J-Law and Emma Stone didn’t go near the all-female version, which is being set up as the second-tier product.

    • Wren says:

Are any of these guys whose names are floating around funny? I mean, it’s not like the original was carried on the backs of sweaty shirtless men with carefully waxed chests and bulging biceps.

  7. Lucy2 says:

I can’t believe they think this is a good idea. And given what we now know about Sony, you know the budget for this one will be much higher and the actors will be paid more.

  8. Catelina says:

I heard rumors of this a while ago but in the version I read, Chris Pratt was going to be co starring with Channing. I guess that that’s no longer the case. I wonder who they’ll assemble now. I think it’s pretty clear they’re trying to turn ghostbusters into a big franchise with one girls team and one boys team and then having them work together avengers style in a third movie if all goes as planned. It’s all a bit too calculated at this point for me to get excited about

    • RocketMerry says:

What I want to know is exactly WHAT is Taterhead doing to get so many big roles; a good actor he is not, handsome he is even less, so what is it?

And I don’t have anything but love for The Pratt, I’d watch him just stare in a camera for two hours and happily pay money for it, but seriously, ENOUGH WITH THE REBOOTS.

    • Hautie says:

I like the idea of Chris Pratt… and Vince Vaughn. I could see them having the charm, I would enjoy, if they get added to the Ghostbusters gang.

But if Shia or Jonah Hill is any where near it. I will not be remotely interested.

      I really like Vince Vaughn.

And Vaughn can be so friggin funny, with the correct material. He just has not had a really decent movie in a while (last 4/5 years). The last movies of his I did like…. 4 Christmases & Couples Retreat. But hey… he is shooting HBO’s -True Detective right now…

I just adore Chris Pratt. But that comes from his work on Parks & Recreation. And of course that movie masterpiece… Take me home tonight. (Don’t judge me… I really loved that silly movie.)

      • EscapedConvent says:

I agree—-I could see Vince Vaughn being good at this, but Shia Le I can’t be bothered to type the rest of his name would be the kiss of death.

It does sound like a dismal, terrible idea. Ghostbusters is perfection. It doesn’t need to be re-made over and over, even if I am curious about how Gozar has aged.

  9. Amy says:

I personally won’t be supporting either film in this series then.

It’s cute that Sony is trying to give us a separate but equal! film but since it’s becoming more clear business hasn’t changed internally since their hacking I’m content to give my money to better options.

    I’m disappointed but not surprised.

    • Greyson says:

      Yeah.

I didn’t like the idea of an all-girls cast, simply because it was another unnecessary reboot! A second reboot takes even more wind out of the sales of the series!

And besides, Ghostbusters was at its heart a COMEDY! This second “serious” reboot is lame.

  10. Samtha says:

Do we really need two movies? If they’re determined to reboot the franchise, why not just have two men and two women in one movie?

  11. Gill B says:

I don’t get what is supposed to be so fascinating about Ghostbusters that it would support a ‘universe’.

    • Algernon says:

Back in the 80s Dan Aykroyd wrote a “bible” of Ghostbusters and he pitched a spin-off about Manhattan becoming a portal to hell but that movie never got made. The Ghostbusters bible is one of those fabled Hollywood things, everyone’s heard of it and everyone says they know someone who’s seen it and it’s really good. The idea of a Ghostbusters universe has been around since the first movie, though. Aykroyd, at least, always intended it to be a big franchise, but the original sequel was no good and Bill Murray and Harold Ramis wanted to move on, so it was scuppered. I don’t think it’s a coincidence that as soon as Ramis died, all of a sudden rebooting Ghostbusters became a viable option. I think he was the final roadblock. (I think Bill Murray doesn’t care what they do so long as they leave him out of it.)

  12. Caz says:

Genuine bewilderment as to why anyone thinks Ghostbusters needs to be remade. Horrible thought…the theme song being redone by….?

  13. Ana says:

Shia LaBeouf would probably flatline himself and get revived just so he can truly understand the ghost characters. He’s so method that one.

  14. CK says:

Sony just undercut their own film. That is just flat out disrespectful to everyone working on the version that is in development. I mean, they seriously couldn’t control the information until the Feig version had started shooting. I’m not against the idiotic idea of a franchise, I’m against the female version being delegitimized by Sony’s antics. And we all know that “action-comedy” means a higher budget and better salaries. If they make the male cast descendents of the original ghostbusters, I’m going to lose my mind. I usually give actors some heat when they don’t support their films and it goes the other way too. Let the female version have its time, its spotlight, and it’s chance to rise or fall on its own merits.

    • tealily says:

Not to mention that this is particularly bad timing following the hacks. Their reputation is in the dumps already. Why would they choose to shoot themselves in the foot with this?

    • Shambles says:

I’m with you. This feels so…. Men’s-rights-activist-y to me.
“But you’re giving the girls an entire movie?! SEXISM! YOU’RE EXCLUDING US! Never mind that women have been the marginalized and excluded sex for centuries, we need equal rights because we haven’t already had all the rights forever!”

  15. BRE says:

ugh, it still seems like there is an issue in this county with women-only casts in comedy, cause you know, women can’t be funny, just dramatic or sexy. Ugh. Let it go dudes! And Tatum? Sorry, it is good eye candy but not much of a comedic actor.

    • deehunny says:

22 Jumpstreet was painful. They were poking fun at the fact that it was the same story as the first one and that it was, well, bad, and I do appreciate tongue-in-cheek jokes about their own movies, (Rubber, anyone?) but damn it was still bad.

  16. Pinky says:

Just watched Ghostbusters again last week and am counting the years until I can share it with my own kids. I don’t need a remake (with non-comedians or otherwise).

And Vince Vaughn is in season two of True Detective. Which is why I will not be watching it.

  17. Kali says:

At least they waited until International Women’s Day was over before announcing this. #smallmercies

  18. Granger says:

Sigh. I thought Dan Ackroyd was smarter than this. Turns out he’s just another blindly idiotic Hollywood heavyweight.

  19. Erykah B. says:

OF COURSE they are doing this. I hope the one with the women makes more money and is better in every way.

    • Jag says:

      +1000000

I’m not big on the female cast, for what I know of them, but I absolutely will not watch a movie with Jonah Hill and Vince V. in it . Not even on Netflix!

  20. Grace says:

The new “Ghostbusters” movie won’t necessarily be “guy-themed,” but it could include Chris Pratt. “It does have some guys at the center — the concept here is a movie that spins out of the chemistry between real-life friends Channing Tatum and Chris Pratt,” Badass Digest editor Devin Faraci wrote in a post on Monday night.

  21. Lucy says:

WOW, MUCH MANLY, SO BRO. This is so, so doomed.

  22. A.Key says:

I don’t want a remake. I’m so sick of all the godamn remakes and sequels and reboots.
But if I’m forced to choose, I prefer the all-male version, sorry.

    • Grace says:

I don’t want to watch McCarthy’s fat jokes on screen again.

    • Catelina says:

i dont really like the SNL actresses theyre using. I would much rather watch Tatum and Pratt onscreen than them. Maybe that makes me a bad feminist or something, i dont really care. Unless the writing for the girls one is really good then I dont see myself enjoying it much.

    • Elly says:

yeah sadly i also would choose the male version. From the female cast i only know Melissa McCarthy and that´s enough to know what direction the movie will take. Fat jokes, fecal humour and other silly stuff… no thanks. The original male cast was funny, but they were intelligent/ nerdy funny.

  23. FLORC says:

    Rant ahead…
    No! Bad Idea!
    * it doesn’t need to be made. Sony/Hollywood just got lazy and want to bleed every penny from every once successful idea.
    * These actors need to back away from our collective childhood. Yes you loved the films. Yes you’re now and actor. Yes you would love to be a part of this franchise. But what should be asked is can you improve upon it? No, you can’t. It will only be money in your pocket and hitching your name to popular films like you helped make them so.
    * The originals were awesome! Awesome in ways movies can’t really get away with anymore. http://m.youtube.com/watch?v=SM-l_3RaYsk Great Examples.

And while these actors and the female cast aren’t awful, they aren’t right for these roles. It’s like 1 got the job and they hired their friends for the other roles. You might think you’re all funny, but Ghostbusters is established. You have to at the very least match the humor if not improve and there’s just not the talent here for that. And that the wroters are recycling films with minor tweeks to plot does not give me hope for good writing.

If you enjoyed the films. If Ghostbusters is a happy memory from your youth why not leave it as is?
Pratt is top Offender here with Jurassic Park also. So, let him promote another film. Let him speak more. That’s how we know he finds joy in killing animals not for survival, but just because leaving the carcass unused and mocks those who are willing to give his cat a good home because he can’t be bothered to do so.

    • Scylla74 says:

All of what you said… I really don’t understand how Chris Pratts bad behavior towards animals is so wildley overlooked. I liked him once because I was a huge fan of P&R (I only watched the first 3 seasons but I liked EVERYONE on the show).

Melissa MC: I have a soft spot for her… because: Gilmore Girls! I even tried to watch Mike and Molly but after one ep I knew this wasn’t for me. She seems like a nice lady but obviously she is only used as the “funny fat girl”/crass jokes lady. This wasn’t the case with her Suki role.

  24. Algernon says:

    …Channing Tatum isn’t a meathead…?

  25. Josefa says:

I think it’s interesting they went for older women for the female version, but are considering hunky young men for the male one.

Won’t be watching either way. I didn’t even like the original Ghostbusters.

  26. Dr.Funkenstein says:

Guess I’m just old fashioned, but I’d really appreciate it if Hollywood would start producing something original and stop with the endless remakes and comic book movies. What a load of crap.

  27. Rhiley says:

Bad idea, but if it the brobusters does happen, Kevin Hart will likely be in it as well.

  28. tealily says:

This makes me want to see either one even less.

  29. Mispronounced Name Dropper says:

Who relies on Hollywood when you’ve got World cinema?
