Nick Cannon spent 30 hours getting his “Mariah” back tattoo covered up

When Nick Cannon and Mariah Carey got married back in 2008, after about six weeks of dating, they revealed that they got tattoos for each other, which they showed off in People Magazine. I wrote at the time that the difference between their tattoos was incredible and that Mariah “has a small butterfly at the base of her spine with ‘Mrs. Cannon’ in script as the center line of the butterfly. It’s nearly impossible to see and you can’t tell that the center of the butterfly is actual writing unless you’re right up close.” Nick, on the other hand, had Mariah’s name tattooed across the top of his back in huge writing that you couldn’t miss. (You can see Nick’s original tattoo circled in the People cover below and also on The Daily Mail and TMZ.) So it looked like Nick was in it for life and Mariah was hedging her bets. They lasted six years, which is kind of amazing when you consider their likely dynamic.

Now that Nick and Mariah are going through a divorce and divvying up their massive assets, Nick has covered up the Mariah tattoo with a full back tribute to Jaysus. It features a crucifixion scene in the middle (which he originally got back in October) with a cherub on either side representing his twins. The bottom of Nick’s tattoo reads “Father Forgive Them, For They Know Not What They Do.” TMZ has a photo of the whole tattoo if you’re interested and they reveal that it took 30 freaking hours to get this latest work done. That’s crazy.

Nick’s new tattoo earned him the cover of Urban Ink Magazine, above, which will feature photos of the no-doubt painful process. I only have a couple of tattoos I got when I was very young, and I doubt I would do it again. I’ve considered it, but mine are relatively small and both hurt like a bitch to get. Plus there’s the issue of finding a decent artist to ink something that will be on your body until death, unless you get another tattoo or go through laser treatments.

Anyway, Nick, 34, has had a ton of tattoos done lately including a full sleeve. I’ve heard they can be cathartic and he must be going through a rough time in his divorce. He isn’t letting the grass grow under his feet, though. Nick has been linked to Nicole Murphy, 47, whom he’s been seen out with twice, including on Valentine’s Day. He also was spotted this last weekend at a grocery store in New Jersey, where he now lives, with a hot “mystery woman.” (Page Six has the photo of the two of them together, although it’s hard to tell that it’s Nick.)

Nick recently started renting an $11,000 a month, $3 million estate in Jersey with the option to buy. Mariah sold their mansion in Bel Air earlier this month for $9 million and Nick is suing to determine how the proceeds from the sale will be split between them. He claims he had no say in the sale. Compared to getting divorced, having burning needles pierce your back for hours doesn’t seem so bad.

    Haha

  2. Pandy says:

I like Nick, he seems like a decent guy. Not a big tat fan, but that tat is pretty awesome.

  3. Dhavynia says:

They never learn…. Unless it’s your child never get your significant other’s name

  4. aims says:

The bad blood between those two must be pretty bad. I have to say with all honesty that living with Mariah for so many years would probably leave me with a bad a taste in my mouth to. She must had been a real nightmare.

  5. Joy says:

I can still see the Mariah under the new one.

    • Erm says:

Yes! That really bugs me… a good cover-up makes the old tattoo pretty much vanish, or at least draws your eye away from it.

  6. Murphy says:

He’s having a rough time with the divorce? Shouldn’t have boned a tons of chicks then!

  7. Bridget says:

It seems like such a shortcut to me to have an entire sleeve put into place at once. I thought it was supposed to be a collection of work done over time.

  8. NOWI'VESAIDIT says:

Every divorce has a winner and a loser. Nick has taken the prize – Mimi is too old and too difficult to bounce back. Who’s she going to marry now?!?

  9. FingerBinger says:

I think it would have been easier to get rid of the Mariah tattoo instead of getting more ink.

    • Liz says:

It was easier to get rid of Mariah than the tattoo Lol

    • Artemis says:

      I agree.

Personally, I wouldn’t feel comfortable knowing that there’s a tattoo hidden there that had so much meaning. Get rid of that shit and start with a new-ish slate.

  10. Liz says:

Forever is a whimsical idea and very romantic and yes, possible, but inking yourself is the stupidest idea ever!

  11. Artemis says:

He has been disrespectful towards the mother of his children so I hope it hurt him good. I hope it made him think twice about his actions but, who am I kidding?

Why don’t they ever get initials or dates or a symbol? Why a full name? Never do that! It’s not even beautiful 9 times out of 10.

  12. maeliz says:

All that time and pain is why you shouldn’t go crazy with the size of the name. She doesn’t seem to be the most loveable person in the world

I think as soon as he got the big “Mariah” tattoo everyone was like uh oh, bad move.
The house he’s suing over, they bought that while married, so I’m assuming his name is on the deed too. I think that’s fair that he’s asking for an explanation of how it will be divided up. Why he needs a lawsuit to do that I don’t know, you’d think it would be part of the divorce proceedings.

  14. jujoki says:

OMG looking at the whole thing you can see his kids as the little angels on the sides.

  15. Iheartgossip says:

He is not aging well. Or he needs a few nights of some good sleep.
