Shailene Woodley in Ralph Lauren in NYC: too casual or awesome?

Shailene Woodley

Shailene Woodley is everywhere in NYC right now. She visited David Letterman, where he grilled Shailene about her clay swallowing. They also talked about leaky gut syndrome. Dave had a fine time trying not to laugh. Shai also chatted with Kelly Ripa and Michael Strahan about her exploding-salmon suitcase. I’ll concentrate on fashion in this post.

At last night’s Insurgent premiere, Shailene finally brought it in a Ralph Lauren dress with a plunging neckline and a front slit. The dress had a cool, buttony detail on the side, but it was simple enough to fit Shailene’s overall style. This is a solid New York premiere dress. She’s growing out her hair with a small ponytail, which I’m glad to see. Shailene posed with Miles Teller, who also wore Ralph Lauren (Purple Label). He may be a brat, but dude looks good in a three-piece suit. The other guys — including Ansel Elgort in Prada and Theo James in Dolce & Gabbana — are in the gallery, so we can talk about more dresses.

Suki Waterhouse chose a blush-clored Reem Acra dress with a lace overlay. She enjoys going for the princessy vibe, but the side cutouts ruin the dreamy effect of the dress. Suki pinned back her bangs – is she growing them out?

Octavia Spencer wore Tadashi Shoji. I love the top of this dress with the jacquard pattern. The skirt struck me as a little too boho, but this is a popcorn-crunching movie, so she’s having fun.

Zoe Kravitz rocked an awesome Christian Dior dress that couldn’t even be undone by a mullet. I love it. The silhouette is fresh and youthful but not too cutesey. Zoe’s jewelry is all Dior as well.

Ashley Judd went fussy with a floral Badgley Mischka gown. This dress is very pretty but too formal for a NYC screening. It would probably work for an awards show or gala.

Maggie Q fit the theme of Insurgent with a funky, futuristic Zuhair Murad gown. This is one case where sheer overly works, and the elegant, drapey skirt is a nice contrast to the intricate upper half of the dress.

Suki Waterhouse looks like “Fairy-Stoner Barbie” straight out of the box (her eyes look high and her pose is def not an action pose), although I like the dress.
And somehow, it looks like Maggie Q’s dress is on backwards; the way her arm falls or sumthin’.

WAIT, is that a denim suit with brown shoes?! HAHAHAHA

      You are vicious today.

Agree about Suki although my internal description didn’t have as much flair as your Fairy Stoner Barbie characterization, perfect. I was just think it looks like the lights are on but nobody’s home.

And yes that farmer formalwear is a travesty. I like Shailene’s and Octavia’s looks though.

Shailene’s dress could have been sexy.. but she just doesn’t make it sexy.. She is a nice looking girl with a good figure but the sexy is missing.

I think the bottom of the dress with the buttons on the side make it feel too old for her. It is like the dress is battling with itself.

Zoe looks awesome here! I think (like Rihanna) she elevates everything she wears to bad-ass territory and makes it work. The structure and the detailing of the dress almost have a futuristic look which fits the theme of the movie.

Octavia looks good too! A little more relaxed than she usually goes but still very pretty. Related note: I finally watched Snowpiercer yesterday, totally loved it, and thought Octavia/the entire cast were incredible.

Maggie Q somehow makes gowns which would otherwise look really tacky look pretty good.

A big thank-you to Ocatvia Spencer for making me aware of Tadashi Shoji. Ever since she won the Oscar wearing one of his creations, I’ve been smitten! The patterns and the cut are just SO my style…LOVE it! And she is always lovely.

She is very loyal to him, and for good reason – his gowns are gorgeous on her! I like a lot of his designs, very elegant.

I’ve been liking Shailene’s style much more lately. Kudos to her stylist.

    Zoe looks great!

  6. WTF says:

Shailene is the definition of “basic”. I just don’t get the hype around her at all.
    Zoe looks Amazeballs
and who knew Ashley Judd had such a rocking body?

    Zoe and Maggie Q.

  8. Miran says:

That Dior dress would’ve been much better without the stupid mullet back. Maggie Q looks great.

  9. Tiffany says:

Zoe is officially her Mom’s mini me. Wow.

Miles hand position on Shailene looks creepy. His fake smile is creepy too.
