Benedict Cumberbatch shows off his new haircut in London: trendy or terrible?

wenn22336204

Ah, two Benedict Cumberbatch posts in a day. It feels like old times!! It feels like December 2014. I wrote about Benedict earlier today – he’s going to host the Laureus World Sports Awards in April, in Singapore. Because I guess he wants to chance it about being there when the Cumberbaby is born. And now this post, which I’m writing up simply because we have new photos of Bendy. He was seen leaving the BBC Studios earlier today.

First, let’s talk about his hair. WHY did he get another haircut? Why is so short? Didn’t he learn anything from that terrible haircut he got just ahead of the awards season? Dear Benedict: you look better with some longer Cumbercurls. Don’t try to follow the male-hairstyle trends. Personally, I blame Sophie. Ever since she came into the picture, his hair has been FUBAR.

As for what Benedict was doing at the BBC… I don’t know? It might have had something to do with the Letters Live event? Or it might have had something to do with Benedict doing a reading at the reburial of Richard III tomorrow. Reportedly, Benedict will be reading a poem by Britain’s poet laureate Carol Ann Duffy as Richard III’s remains – which were only recently unearthed – are re-interred. The reading will go down at a formal service at Leicester Cathedral. Benedict played Richard III in the yet-to-be-released Hollow Crown: The War of the Roses. Plus, Benedict and Richard III are distant relatives. Because of course they are.

UGH THIS HAIR. Too trendy. Too short. Too much product.

Trendy and terrible- he looks like he trying to get his Boy Band back together for a reunion tour.

  2. Freebunny says:

He looks very old I have to say.

    • fritanga says:

Yes – my thought exactly. The short hair ages him about 10 years. It also makes him look even more like a member of the Quaid family. Yuck. Bad decision.

  3. alice says:

I like it. Great improvement over the slicked back look. The cut he had in the People layout last year was rather great, too.

    • Christo says:

I may be in the minority, but I love it as well. It isn’t as stylized as he typically has it, which is a nice change if just to see him in a different light. He looks like he could be Nicholas Hoult’s older brother here.

    • EC says:

Yup, I’m into it. I like when ladies mix up their hair, I like it when men mix up their hair. Plus, when the curls are unleashed for Sherlock in a year, it will be all that much sweeter because of the wait.

    • Abby_J says:

I love the cumbercurls, but this is nice too, so I am with you all on team short hair, I guess.

    • Kimberly says:

I like it the hair cut and the jacket. They both actually would make me put him on my “I would do” list. LOL

    • Blair Warner says:

I love it! And his tiny coffee too.

  4. T says:

    Welp…LOVE the coat……………………………………………

  5. Size Does Matter says:

I, too, prefer the longer curls, but this isn’t screaming into the void hideous. I guess that’s a compliment?

  6. I like it more than his red carpet look, but less (A LOT LESS) than the Sherlock curls. The Sherlock curls are perfect.

  7. GoodNamesAllTaken says:

I think Kaiser’s advice is good. You don’t have “easy” hair that can be cut into layers and then falls prettily in place. You have to have someone who really knows how to cut hair hair like yours. Stop f*cking it up.

  8. Kitten says:

    That’s a $10 haircut right there.

This must be Comet Sophie’s fault.

    • Kiddo says:

I had a Kewpie doll link, that was db-ed. Look it up, spittin’ image of the style. Also, wasn’t that style a thing in the 90’s?

  9. idsmith says:

    I think it looks good

    • gg says:

That’s Loo Brealey with him so it must be about Letters Live

      • Bea says:

It think the pictures were taken near BBC. Does Letters Live have anything to do with BBC? Maybe they’ll broadcast it or something.

  10. Charlotte says:

Is he rocking a slight faux hawk? Why oh why? I blame Sophie, too. He’s had bad hair since she came on the scene. She wants him to be as plain as she is. 😉

    • Lilacflowers says:

Yes, a fauxhawk. Because we need to bring that look back so we can giggle

    • Felice says:

Just because her hair game sucks doesn’t mean she has to drag him down with her

    • MtnRunner says:

There is the theory about unhappy spouses that let their hair go to pot. Usually it’s the woman though (i.e. Judy Davis in The Ref).

Perhaps this is Ben’s distress signal?

      • EscapedConvent says:

I have a long-held theory that people who are emotional wrecks quite often do something weird to their hair. I can’t count how many people I’ve seen cut off all their hair or even shave their heads when in emotional turmoil. Sometimes it follows a trauma or a break up. I think it’s a kind of purging and a desire to clean their slate.

Of course, since they’re almost always distraught when they do it, it usually looks like crap!

Cumby obvously does not know what looks good on him. These very short cuts look terrible on him. He needs a little hair around his face—like his fomer cut that gave him a kind of longer, wavy front, but shorter sides and back. I thought that flattered him the most.

His hair hasn’t looked good for several months now. Too bad, because his hair is beautiful.

  11. Nikole says:

    Maybe it’s for a role.

  12. MindlessContemplations says:

I actually kind of like it on him. I think it makes him look a little younger.

  13. FingerBinger says:

His hair looks fine. It looks like he’s wearing oxfords ,which I love.

  14. Betti says:

So, the question now is which famous historical figures ISN’T Mr Cumberbatch related to?

    Answers on a postcard to…

    • Lilacflowers says:

Hi Chi Minh? Malcolm X? Both of whom worked in the restaurant of the Parker House in Boston

      • gg says:

Is that true? I actually stayed there once…..

      • Lilacflowers says:

Yes, it is true they both worked in the kitchen there. Ho Chi Minh was a dishwasher. Malcolm X bused tables. Emeril Lagasse got his start in that kitchen too. That hotel has a fascinating history. Dickens wrote Great Expectations while he was staying there.

  15. OhDear says:

I… actually like it. As trendy haircut goes, this looks nice on him. Could you imagine him with the long-ish on top, close-cropped to the side haircut (see: Giroud, Oliver)?

    /runs away

  16. EN says:

I like the haircut and the jacket. He looks good.

And it looks like he got a new scarf – navy with polka dots. Hmm. I didn’t like it at first but I think it is growing on me.

    • Kiddo says:

That jacket would look better if it was elasticized at the waist, and if he had peg jeans that were rolled up, along with it.

  17. taterho says:

He looks a bit like Bob’s Big Boy with the haircut. I kinda dig it. It makes his face less…”alien”ish.

    • Kiddo says:

I bet the only reason you like it, is because the Big Boy conjures up the image and scent of french fries, for you.*

      * I know your game, underground tuber anarchist. I’m on to you!

    • MtnRunner says:

Bob’s Big Boy… yes!! Just needs a little more sweep up to the side.

  18. Bea says:

Great haircut, terrible hairstyle. Is this a Caffè Nero ad? I’m never 100% sure with him.

  19. lindy79 says:

Better than the slicked look and i like the jacket but he does look like he needs a rest.
His ring would annoy me, it looks really loose, its up at his knuckle in one shot. Like look at second pic, you see a mans hand, thats where the rings typically sit, at the base of the finger. He needs to either get it refitted or bulk up a bit.

And im not being a nutty “they’re not really married” person, its just annoying lol

    • Charlotte says:

The too big ring would annoy me. It looks like it’s about to fall off.

I like the polka dot scarf. It’s unisex. It will look good on Sophie when she wears it on their next “accidentally caught by paps while looking directly into the camera and awkwardly cheek kissing” pics. She does love to wear his things.

      • Toodles45 says:

Both of their rings slide around their fingers. I find her fondness for “bro” hugs confusing.

I like his haircut, but BOY is he aging. He doesn’t look terrible but the last few years (and months) have not been kind to him.

        Loo is adorable.

    • j says:

weight loss changes your ring size is my guess

i just went through that–my ring was like an 8 and i finally went for resizing after losing weight, needed to be a 6.5 😀

      • lindy79 says:

True but get it resized you risk losing it otherwise…or get a claspy thing on the back if its to do with weightloss.

  20. InvaderTak says:

That’s a Burberry jacket isn’t it? I love their coats. Loo looks good as well.

    • Darya née Dara says:

@Invader- Belstaff I think, but in the same ballpark. I like this style of jacket/coat, he’s got another of theirs that doesn’t work for him at all.

Loo looks great, love her hair.

    • Linz says:

      @InvaderTak.
      Belstaff Jacket.

  21. BendyWindy says:

    I’m feeling his whole look.

  22. Felice says:

Has a midlife crisis faux-hawk going on. I do like the short hair he had in October though.

    • alice says:

Just no mullet, no mullet, no mullet, please. Anything but a mullet or a gelled slick back. I already dislike the hair in the Sherlock Special.

      • gg says:

Dear God, I HATE the Sherlock Special hair. He better be wearing the deerstalker 99% of the time

  23. briargal says:

REALLY!!! Do we really need two posts a day on this guy??? I don’t normally read anything about this actor but realize that someone is addicted to writing about him constantly. Thanks but now that I’ve had my say……I’m so not into this guy. Bye!

  24. Tessd says:

With that jacket? He looks gorgeous and badass!

  25. hermi! says:

I just pray to whatever God is there he’s not bringing this hairstyle to Hamlet. I want the curls back!
You have amazing natural curls, why look like a silly version of the singer from Travis?

    • EN says:

Ha, I believe the appropriate hairstyle for 12-13th century male is a “pageboy” cut.
The kind he has in Richard III.

    • j says:

      for Hamlet, probably?

Iim not saying short hair, I think he’s going to have his natural hair color and that cut will foster growth and gets rid of the black dye.

    • Darya née Dara says:

Hair for Hamlet should be whatever makes him look younger, or they’ll have to change the title to Hamlet, Prince of Denmark and his Mid-Life Crisis.

      • lizziebee93 says:

@Darya *sniggers* you win at life

      • MtnRunner says:

Darya, It’s been dubbed Hamlet Pushes 40 by Lilac.

      • EscapedConvent says:

        Darya, that is most excellent.

      • Darya says:

‘Hamlet Pushes 40’ it is. Who knows, if they stage it set in the modern-day, the whole middle-age existential crisis could work. “To be or not to be…aww hell, maybe I’ll just buy a hot sports car (perhaps a Jag) and have lots of casual sex.” And then there’s, “Neither a borrower or lender be, if your famous friends can get you things for free.” Hey, that one rhymes!

Don’t get me wrong, I’ve got nothing against BC as an actor but he is just too darn old to play Hamlet. I’m withholding judgement on his Shakespeare skills (has he done much of it?) until I see the Hollow Crown. If he doesn’t do RIII justice I will never forgive him.

      • Betti says:

@Darya – I’m with you on the RIII, that’s one of my fave plays and i saw Martin Freeman in the role last year – he was amazing.

As for Hamlet – he is too old to play him. He could have just got away with it early last year but now he’s looking so old and haggard. Its easily going to be Hamlet and his ‘the lord does proclaim his love for comets too much’.

  26. flavia_deluce says:

Um, on to the more important hair news: Loo Brealey’s red hair looks so cute!

    • alice says:

She’s cute, no matter what. And sharp. I really like her.

    • Oy vey says:

      + 1,000. Love Loo as a redhead. It’s perfect.

I’m a fan of his Byronic look too. But can’t blame Sophie. Looks to me that he always wore his hair short before Sherlock. It’s not bad at all. That’s what he likes, y’know? A grown man should get to pick his own haircut. He is looking older very quickly. I kinda hope it just happened that way instead of being stress induced. He’s still handsome. This is one who grows into his looks.

      And the Belstaff looks hot.

    • Oy vey says:

  27. Regina says:

Whoever designed his look on Sherlock is a genius. He had the longish dark curls, was thin as a rail and sexy as hell, especially in the first episode and even the unaired pilot.

  28. Just_concerned17 says:

I like this new cut! I never liked the slicked back one he sported during the award season…and absolutely hated the one he has in the “Sherlock”‘s special! He doesn’t even look like Sherlock!

What I don’t like is his face…he seems to have aged years in a few months. He looks better than in the running pics released a couple of weeks ago, but still a far cry from how he looked in September 2014.

  29. Angel says:

I like the hair, very Rory from “Fourty-something”.

  30. lisa C says:

Is that the actress who plays molly next to him?

  31. allons-y alonso says:

    Cafe Nero? Ew

  32. sophietta says:

Crikey, I have never, ever understood the Cumby adoration…..

  33. tsmiv2 says:

Don’t like the short hair, it makes him look older. For reference look at this picture taken just over a year ago on March 19, 2014: http://www.itv.com/news/update/2014-03-19/prince-philip-meets-sherlock-star-at-awards-ceremony/

Now compare that to today. And people still want to think the stuff that’s gone on in his life since then has ben good for him? Don’t think so.

  34. Green Is Good says:

The jacket is winning, but yeah he looks better with longer hair. But he’s still Cumby all in all.

  35. GatorGirl13 says:

FUBAR yes! Loved that you used that acronym specifically…..
