Star Magazine and the National Enquirer both have weird Nicole Kidman stories this week. I’m not sure if it’s just because Nicole is currently working on some new projects and the tabloids are all “eh, let’s have her fighting with her costars,” or if Nicole actually has some genuine beefs with people. Let’s start with the one I don’t want to believe – Star says that Nicole finds costar Dev Patel creepy. Seriously? Dev Patel?
Nicole Kidman plays Dev Patel’s adoptive mother in their new upcoming film, Lion, but an insider says that hasn’t stopped the Chappie actor from eyeing her in a way that’s anything but filial!
“Dev leers at every female who passes by, and Nicole is no exception,” says a well-placed insider. “He comes across as this sweet guy onscreen, but on the set he’s the total opposite — he’s constantly on the prowl.”
Filming is set to start in April, and Nicole is already bracing for an awkward working relationship. “She said she was so turned off by him, she half wishes she’d never got signed on,” says the source. “Once she started asking around about him, she discovered lots of people in the business were saying the same thing.”
Dev has always come across to me as a neurotic sweetheart, like maybe he looks at girls but he can’t get the courage to really bring his game. Maybe he’s a bigger flirt than I would imagine. And maybe his flirting crosses a line? I don’t know. But I’m not feeling this story.
Meanwhile, the Enquirer says that Julia Roberts hated Nicole Kidman’s diva ‘tude when they worked together on The Secret in Their Eyes.

Trouble erupted when Julia heard Nicole ignored signing a card passed around for a makeup lady having a birthday! Totally ticked, she got Kangaroo Gal GOOD! Ordering a huge birthday cake delivered right outside Nicole’s trailer, Julia led cast and crew in a super-loud sing-along of ‘Happy Birthday’ – right under Her Majesty’s window!”
Just my opinion (and hey, I could be wrong): Julia Roberts doesn’t play well with other women. I’ll be more specific: Julia does not play well with other women who are as famous, as award-winning, or as center-of-attention as Julia. Julia is fine as long as the other women acknowledge that she is the top dog, but if you get her around another top dog, it gets a little crazy. Think of her interviews with Oprah. So, does Julia hate Nicole? Eh.
You know who else is in The Secret in Their Eyes? Chiwetel Ejiofor. Notice that NO ONE has a problem with Chiwetel. Because why would you?

Normally I’d have no problem saying about Julia Roberts and Nicole Kidman and the “diva” thing: pot, meet kettle. BUT! If Julia’s attitude is because Nicole Kidman is rude to the crew (who are there to make her life easier and help her do her job, FFS), then for once I would have to be Team Julia.

Well, Roberts stole her current husband, who was a crew member so I guess she should stick up for them.

Bleeh… Who does one believe? I just read in an Australian magazine the complete opposite: that Roberts demanded a much larger trailer than everyone else – not that Kidman minded (!!); that Roberts eats alone in her trailer and won’t interact with cast and crew while Kidman lines up with everyone else and chats to whomever is around… In this case, I can see that an Aussie ragmag would paint Kidman in a positive light and vice versa. I don’t know which publishers own which mags, but they sure skew stories for the bottom line. I don’t believe any of the celebrity stories, but do love the recipes!
Well at least Nicole is moving up in the world…working with Julia Roberts instead of slumming with Jennifer Aniston in some Adam Sandler dreck.
Julia is the one with the diva reputation. I’ve never heard anything about Nicole except that she is very polite, and very professional. I think this is either totally made up or put out by Julia’s camp to try to revamp her rep.
Agree. I remember reading stories about how Roberts’ neighbors in Malibu all hated her guts, and how she drove past someone and gave them the finger. I think she’s the temperamental one, not Kidman.

Agreed. I don’t believe this for a second. I think Nicole may be a bit of an introvert and therefore not terribly demonstrative, but Julia is a total Mean Girl. As well as incredibly overrated as an actress. Team Nicole all the way.

I find the diva story hard to believe, because the rumors have always been that Roberts doesn’t have time for any of the ‘regular folks’ in the film biz. But then, I’m biased against her because I’ve never been a fan — of her *or* her acting.
I’ve actually worked with them both as an extra, and Julia was happy, friendly to everyone for the most part. She didn’t hang out with the extras, she did her job and came across pretty much how you see her in interviews. Nicole was SUPER quiet and shy and to herself, and her handlers were the ones that were insanely rude, issuing demands like “don’t look at or talk to Nicole.” She was very nice and polite, and even spoke with me making small talk while we both froze on the corner in Baltimore. She was then wisked away by hair and makeup, after which her bodyguard came over and started to bitch at me not to look at or speak with Nicole.
@K – but don’t you think she told the bodyguard and her other handlers to do that? I can’t imagine they would react that way on their own, without the approval of their boss. This way she gets to look like the nice one but still gets to be left alone by the people she doesn’t want to associate with.
They both come across as bad-acting snobs to me…
Inthekitchen: your perspective reminds me of a story written by an ex-Universal publicist about Tom and Nicole at a press event where a photographer caught them with Nicole wearing high heels, towering over Tom.
Tom chewed out the publicist for allowing such a thing to happen. The Publicist had to go and get the picture from the photographer. Once the photograph had been confiscated (or deleted), Tom popped up to same photographer being all gracious man-of-the-people as he does all the while saying his handlers were overzealous in protecting him. Meanwhile Nicole had discreetly removed the heels.
I always wonder what she learnt at the foot of the master as far as PR even if said master is the crazy TC.
I’m not a fan of Julia’s, but I remember reading stories back when she was single. The word was she hung out with the crew, treated them well, and gave gifts at the end of filming. I was surprised, because I thought she was a massive bitch.
I don’t really believe this stuff about Nicole, but she’s very reserved and shy, and that’s often interpreted negatively. I do remember reading a particularly mean spirited article about her on set of The Golden Compass. The writer claimed that Nicole made everyone at the wrap party uncomfortable, and after she gave out her obligatory gifts and left, everyone had a great time.
Not a fan of Nicole but I can believe the contentiousness between Julia and her. Julia is allegedly difficult and self centered. I’m shocked at the Dev thing. This makes him sound like a horrible stereotype Indian rapey guy. I think Nicole might be overreacting. He’s young and single and has every right to checkout the ladies. Nicole has been in the industry for ages. No doubt shes been checked out by movie stars, directors, producers, crew members and the Kraft service staff. If she says this is different, I believe her. I dont care how harmless the guy looks when a woman with this much experience says she is squirming under a guys gaze, I trust her gut.
Just because his co-workers are female & he’s a single, heterosexual man doesn’t mean he’s got a “right” to check them out in the workplace. They have the right to be professionally treated. That said, it’s probably all made-up garbage.

I’m sure the makeup lady was touched that Julia used the occasion as a way to stick it to Nicole. Revenge birthday cake is fine, but loudly singing to make a point sounds awkward.

The only question I have after reading this is…why are they doing a remake of El Secreto de Sus Ojos???!!!! This movie is fantastic! The actors were amazing! Why why why?? I hate Hollywood.

I could see her and Julia are not getting along well, and I think you’re right on in your assessment of why. But given how often the tabloids make up these “fighting actresses” stories, I give that a whatever shrug also.

Chances are Star had something wonderfully hateful on Julia… reached out to her people to confirm it. And suddenly Nicole is under the back wheel of the bus.

A movie with Nicole Kidman and Julia Roberts seems like a bad idea. Nicole, who is a pretty good actress, is pulled so tightly, it is distracting to see. Julia really doesn’t do much more than show up with her lines memorized and her laugh ready to explode on cue. I suspect the movie will be a major flop, but both of them are going try out campaign the other for the Oscar nom nom nom nom nom.
Julia has a rep for being awful to crew members, including her own husband, whereas at worst I’ve heard Nicole is distant and can come across as a snob to people who don’t realize how shy she is.
I’d completely buy Julia has a problem with Nicole, she has a problem with most famous women, but the reason given is bs. It might be something Julia’s starting though, scoring points by being friendly with the crew for once since she knows Nicole keeps to herself.

Ridiculous. Nicole Kidman has become more or less of a local in my neck of the woods (Tennessee) and while I have never met her personally, I have met many people who have — servers, clerks, etc.. They have all told me that she doesn’t put on any airs, has no entourage, and waits her turn like everyone else. Somehow, I can’t imagine such humble behavior from Julia.
Kidman is well known around Nashville as a normal humanbeing, churchgoer, always in Starbucks with Keith Urban. I don’t buy this story.
The Enquirer story is so funny, Julia Roberys is the known bitch, proven many times over, and Kidman has always been nothing but gracious. Why the Robert’s ass kissing?
Basically I think we have an introvert/extrovert situation here. Julia is the life of the party/I’m best friends with everybody on set type (but promptly forgets she ever met them once the shoot is done), whereas Nicole just keeps her head down and goes to work. I’ve heard enough stories about Nicole being shy/having panic attacks to imagine that an overblown ego like Julia would probably make her retreat even further into her shell. We’ve all known that girl who has to be the center of attention everywhere she goes and picks on the the quiet ones. Team Nicole.

+ one here. I haven’t met NK but I’ve had a couple of encounters with JR and she is INDEED a pill. I wasn’t working for her or with her so there was no excuse for her to be pill-y to me at all. I think it’s just innate with her and she’ll even go out of her way if she gets the chance. I’m glad to hear Nicole is nice, she’s very talented.

But really Julia Roberts publisist REALLY? Nicole Kidman bought close to 50k worth of alcohol and food for the paps covering her wedding. Hard to believe a woman with that level of smarts when it comes to pr would treat the crew badly.

I am getting a totally different vibe – but then I’m just some nobody from nowhere who knows no one. I do totally get the “ice queen” vibe from Nicole Kidman, but never from Julia Roberts. I’ve never gotten that “she doesn’t like other chicks” vibe from her (Angelina Jolie has been given the same wrap). I think Julie – like Angelina (like myself particularly) are just “guy’s gals”. We get along with guys better. They like us better. We are “cool chicks” to them and other women resent it, make assumptions about it, treat us differently and so eventually, you just have to disconnect from the fluffy Power Puff Girls. That said, Dev Patel has never struck me as creepy. I think it may be a cultural thing….thrown into a life with all these different kinds of women with attitudes and morals so different from what he was raised on. I think it’s less about “leering” in some kind of sexual, weird way and more like like rubbernecking a traffic accident.
Dev Patel is from London, UK. So I don’t see why it would be such a stark cultural difference for him between the US and UK… Maybe he’s a creep, maybe not, but I do know that guys who are presumably sweet in front of cameras and in interviews can in fact be completely different IRL. Just saying! 🙂
Regarding the Julia/Nicole thing – I think that story is completely fabricated by the magazine.
I always had the worst vibes about “Julie”.
Dev’s probably just trying to get a closer look at all the horrible botox work she’s had.
Julia is a Scorpio (as am I) – highly complex individuals full-stop. That is it.
