Michael Keaton does a Batman voice for ‘SNL’ promos: is he shading Bale?

Michael Keaton

Michael Keaton will host this weekend’s episode of SNL, which means I may actually sit down and watch the live episode. I didn’t even do it for The Rock last week, opting instead to catch clip highlights from Dustin Rowles at Pajiba. Keaton shall grace the show with his presence for the third time, so it’s an event. I don’t have massively high hopes for SNL to write good material for Keaton because — hahaha. They’ll do some Beetlejuice stuff and definitely a Batman sketch. I’m still miffed that we didn’t get to hear the promised “weeping, gushing, phony, obnoxious” Oscar speech. Maybe he’ll do that for the monologue.

The episode promos surfaced yesterday. There’s a reference to Keaton getting “robbed.” Keaton also does a Batman voice straight off the bat. It’s not quite the voice Keaton used when he played Batman in the first two movies. This is more like the more exaggerated, Christian Bale version. A video comparing the Keaton and Bale versions is available here. Now for the promo clip.

I don’t want to make too much of this, but I’m not the only one who hears the Bale version, which is several octaves lower than what Keaton did many years ago. Because Bale isn’t known for his subtlety, and he overdoes everything. It’s possible that Keaton could simply be doing a warped variation of the Birdman voice too. But I want this to be shade. Keaton hilariously ruffled some Bat feathers during his Oscar campaign, and he may be poking fun at everyone (including himself) here. Keaton has earned the right to shade. He IS Batman.

just caught Mr. Mom the other day…he was SO G-damn funny in that.

OH, how I love this man.

    • Esmom says:

Yes, loved him in Mr. Mom. I don’t typically watch movies more than once but that’s one I watched repeatedly with my friends in college, it was always good for a laugh.

    • illandri says:

YES! I just caught Multiplicity last night. The end still makes me cry. 🙂

  2. Keaton will always be my favorite Batman. I really like him.

  3. Kiddo says:

I actually thought the Rock episode wasn’t bad at all. The BF actually lol-ed in a few spots.

    • Dońt kill me i'm french says:

      Bambi remake was funny

    • Odessa says:

I was pleasantly surprised by The Rock. He was pretty funny, and he really committed to it. Am I crazy or is he kinda hot? Damn these hormones!!!

  4. Ruby says:

I think it’s the natural lowering of the voice with age. I was watching an old Sam Neill movie last night and I was surprised at how high his voice sounded.

Dear wonderful, talented, handsome, charming Mr. Keaton
and the ok, not so great current SNL writers:

I am very much looking forward to Saturday. One request…
You already went back and referenced Multiplicity, so perhaps you could
go back further and bring us some
    old school Johnny Dangerously.

    Signed,
    BIG FAN of Keaton
    little fan of current SNL

    • Kiddo says:

You catch more flies with sugar!

    • mia girl says:

      Fine…

you know your last name’s an adverb?

(one of my all time favorite movies!)

    • Kiddo says:

mia girl, B+, not an A, because I am still strongly detecting sarcasm.

    • mia girl says:

doofus – One of my all time favorites too. It never gets old.

kiddo – you can lead a horse to water, but you can’t make it be any less sarcastic.

    • JenniferJustice says:

OMG! I love that movie. “You farkin sneaky bastage!”

What ever happened to the beautiful Marilu Henner?

Keaton looks like a french tv guy Julien Lepers http://medias.lepost.fr/ill/2008/12/30/h-4-1370416-1230660472.jpg

It’s Nolan who modified Bale’s Batvoice in post prod since TDK
If you watch Birdman, you ‘ll hear Birdman voice is inspired Bale’s Batvoice

  7. lila fowler says:

Keaton >>>> Bale in all ways.

  8. MoeC23 says:

He was and is my favorite batman! Val Kilmer, Bale, and Cloony were too pretty for me to be batman. I always thought Bruce Wayne should look more like every man in order to hide his batman identity. Lol yes, I’m weird!

    • Sharra55 says:

Nope…not weird! He IS Batman! I rewatched that commercial like 3 times! I giggled like a school girl every time. It made me happy!

  9. MrsBPitt says:

NOOOOOOOO…I hate it when actors I love host SNL, because that means I may have to watch it and hear actors I love, read the unfunny crap on SNL….Seriously, SNL needs to STOP…its unwatchable!!!

  10. lila fowler says:

Keaton should spoof the Bale Rant. That would be hilarious. “YOU WANT ME TO TRASH YOUR F_CKING LIGHTS? DO YOU?”

    • MP says:

      That would be awesome!
Sometimes when I’m really bored I listen the club mix of the rant on YouTube.

  11. Ameoba says:

Does he seem to have a Natalie Dormer style smirk or am I imagining it?

  12. JenniferJustice says:

Why does SNL currently have Soooooooooooo many cast members? The amount of cast members is so ridiculous, they’re intro into the show takes a good five minutes just getting through all of them. There’s no way they’re all getting a decent amount of air time, and they are not all funny, so…why?

I’ll take quality over quantity, thank you.

  13. katie says:

It was worth hearing him say ” it’s show time ” : +) …. xoxo Mr Beetlejuice

  14. Lou2413 says:

Keaton will forever hold the title of Best Batman Ever. End of discussion.
