Cressida Bonas doesn’t have a boyfriend: ‘I’m a strong, independent woman’

cressida1

Two weekends ago, there was an interesting story about Prince Harry and his ex-girlfriend Cressida Bonas. Cressida was starring in a stage version of The Importance of Being Earnest and Harry came out to the play with his friend Guy Pelly. There were some theories about Cressy and Harry, like maybe they were getting back together or maybe they were still talking and there was a possibility at a reunion. Well, Cressida gave a cover interview to the Sunday Times Style Magazine and she’s saying… nope. No boyfriend. She’s a “strong, independent woman.”

Cressida Bonas, the former girlfriend of Prince Harry, has described it as “nice” being single as she described herself as a “strong, independent woman”. The couple began dating in 2012, after being introduced by his cousin and her close friend Princess Eugenie, but split up last year.

In an interview, the 26-year-old said not having a boyfriend is “nice”, adding: “I’m a strong, independent woman.”

The model and actress also dismissed the intense interest in her relationship with Harry.

“All that stuff is not real,” she told the Sunday Times Style magazine. “It’s really important to remember that all it is, is noise, noise that can be very loud at times.”

She told the magazine the environment in which she grew up was “full of drama and music and thespian-like people”.

In an apparent reference to being known as the prince’s former partner, she said: “I hope the focus is becoming more about the skills that I have.”

Cressida also said she is “a lion” when it comes to defending her family and said it is most annoying when people “attack” her mother Lady Mary-Gaye Curzon.

[From The Telegraph]

Hm. Do you believe Cressida is a strong, independent woman? Eh. I think Cressida played a lot of games with Harry and it ended up blowing up in her face. I think Harry has tried to maintain good relations with her despite all of her game-playing and all of her leaking to the press. But I also believe that Cressida truly is done with Harry and the idea of royal life. She’s a “name” now, with a modeling contract and the start of an acting career. And I do think it’s important to her that she can support herself financially, because word is that her family really isn’t that well off – they’re aristocratic, of course, and well-connected. But the “old money” just isn’t there anymore. Thus, Cressida is looking to make some money as a model, celebrity and actress rather than a royal girlfriend. Which is fine.

I think she’s getting there in her own right.

    • HH says:

      Ha. Maybe.

I just love the IRONY of it all. The idea of being independent, when the cover has to mention your famous ex in order to gain interest.

  2. Pri says:

I am really getting tired of these posh girls all becoming starlets! I mean, Cara, Suki, Georgia, Poppy, Edie and now her. Yawn.

    • HoustonGrl says:

Agreed. I think it’s an English thing…like you have to be well connected to land those gigs. Anyway, they all look the same!

      • Allie says:

Not all British. I mean Kendall Jenner, Gigi Hadid, the Baldwin girls…all got modeling contracts because of their family connections. I’m starting to think its a new modeling trend. Designers and labels want immediate attention to their brand, and what faster way to do it then sign these girls who already have a following, even though they aren’t model-worthy.

      • COSquared says:

Yep. It’s publicity over merit. Designers know using these girls will have people talking. Concerning Suki, there really isn’t much going on besides Burberry.

  3. lily says:

Middleton strategy 2.0. She want’s Harry back.

  4. Imo says:

I think she is independent but I don’t quite get the strong vibe yet. Struggle a bit and we’ll talk about strength. But serious question here, at the end of her acclaimed Mulberry dance (hair whipping) video why was there a tall, handsome red head waiting for her at the bottom of the staircase? Really?

  5. Eleonor says:

People usually say Amal is attention seeking, but the real attention seeking is Cressida.
Amal had a career before George Clooney, Cressida has a let’s call it career, after being the “royal fiancé” for a while.

    • MelissaManifesto says:

There is a hate for Amal Clooney that I cannot quite comprehend. Sure she’s enjoying or coping with the media attention, but some women have done worse.

Now back to Cressida: I have heard and known of old money aristocratic families with history, connections, respect, but nearly empty bank accounts. They get invited to great events, live in houses that have been passed on to them by their ancestors, get sent designer clothes because of their names, but have no solid cold hard cash. I think her family might be one of them. However, whether there is merit or not, the media loves to give attention to these girls, which tells me that some people are buying it.

I expect to see more of Cressida from Vogue and Vanity Fair.

      • COSquared says:

These poor-but-toff families love sponging off their New Money friends. The NM more or less buy their way into society circles. Old clothes are written of as “vintage”(that’s why I feel CB isn’t boho, but can’t afford your Gucci’s & McQueen’s). It’s probably why Isabella married into the Branson instead of the Windsors: by marrying into the Bs. she has a jetset life of ski holidays and shopping sprees sans public judgement. Kate has public scrutiny for everything she does. Did the Middletons buy their in? Not really. If they had, sister Pippa would be married to an aristo with a glittering list of blueblooded friends. Nobody sponges off their NM coffers besides Will. What many have said here & elsewhere is that their coffers aren’t that deep(business makes something around £130k p.a) so they probs can’t afford a freeloader(unless there’s marriage prospects, of course). Back to Cressida, I’m guessing she’ll settle down similarly to her sis: New Money but rich.

You can be a strong independent woman and still be in a relationship. I’m very strong and very independent and I’m married.

    • EC says:

exactly what I came here to say.

    • hogtowngooner says:

      +1
I remember Portia de Rossi discussing her relationship with Ellen and what it’s taught her and she said something that’s always stuck with me: “I used to think the way to be strong was to be tough, the way to be independent was to not need anyone. But [Ellen]’s taught me that the more vulnerable you are, the softer you are, the more you allow people into your life and into your heart, the happier you are and the more valuable you are to other people.”

    • Nic919 says:

There aren’t many examples of that in the Royal Family though. Kate is basically a Stepford wife from the fifties having done very little.

  7. Reece says:

I’ll wait til I actually see some skills to comment on that. (I could’ve done that Mulberry commercial) Just like I’m waiting to see if Cara D is any good at acting.

Also, strength and independence are not synonymous with single. I think she means her self worth is not measured by her relationship status.

    • Pixelated says:

+1 the ad didn’t show off an “amazing” moves. She seems to be trying way too hard. It’s nice she wants to work but let’s face it, if she wasn’t Prince Harry’s ex, we would have no idea who she is. Also, the photos don’t show a ‘strong’ woman. More like a limp princess.

  8. Bea says:

Mm hm yeah, a strong independent woman with little to no background in what she aspires to do and a claim to fame through a royal boyfriend.

  9. Penny says:

GUYS! How I’ve been waiting for a Cressida story to come up so I could share this story with the Celebitchy community. Background: I’m American but recently moved to London to join my fiance (who’s British), and was complaining to him that I had yet to see any “celebrities” as we live in Zone 1 and should be in with a chance! Then, last week as I was coming out of Sloane Square tube station (very posh area with lots of nice shops) I glanced up and who was in front of me? Cressie. I did a double take because it was definitely her, but in real life she was just so…ordinary. She literally could have been any other slightly stylish London girl, and for some reason that surprised me. With all the “noise” she’s made dating Harry, I expected her to be drop-dead gorgeous in person. But instead, she was very very predictable. I don’t say this to be mean, but just as interesting observation given the hype surrounding her recently. No one else seemed to notice (or care) that it was her, and as I turned around to wait for a friend I observed her getting barred from the gates and having to top up her Oyster card because she was out of money! How plebeian right?! **Goes back to celebrity watching for further reports back**

    • COSquared says:

Well, financially, she’s as plebian as the rest of us.

    • Hazel says:

Thank you for your story! I love celebrity sightings, they’re so random and that’s what I love about them.

  10. Bridget says:

Those castles and estates are awfully expensive to maintain. I thought the whole point of being landed gentry was that it was intended to generate income. Otherwise that old money goes fast.

  11. Jaybee says:

Yeah, you could be married and still be a strong, independent woman. I think the edge for single women now (like me LOL) is most of the time we have to be strong and independent for themselves. There are times that we spend most of their time alone and without a partner to ask help for when things get rough, we manage to comfort, support, love and accept ourselves as a single woman. I believe single women can develop a different form of strength., the strength of being able to stand up and create your foundation as an individual.

For married women, I think the strength and independence exists in a different form. it can emerge as a wife trying to juggle every responsibility, a mother protecting her children and her husband, and a wife who stands by her husband, united but also unique and individual in so many ways.
