Jon Cryer: I dated Demi Moore, it was awkward meeting Ashton Kutcher

Jon Cryer is among the many celebrities promoting memoirs this season. His book is called So That Happened and we previously covered an extensive excerpt in which he told his side of Charlie Sheen’s spectacular meltdown and revealed that he (Cryer) once hired a prostitute at Sheen’s recommendation.

During Cryer’s promotional tour he debuted a new look, with a shaved head and facial hair. It really suits him. In a new interview with Entertainment Tonight (video is here), Cryer revealed that he dated Demi Moore in the 80s (they starred in 1984’s No Small Affair) and so he found it strange to meet Ashton Kutcher for the first time, on the Two and a Half Men set. Cryer kept expecting Kutcher to bring up their mutual ex, but it doesn’t sound like he ever did.

On Charlie Sheen’s meltdown
I don’t recall in the history of television that a star went so spectacularly off the rails.

In the first few years of the show Charlie was sober and he was married to Denise Richards. He was an incredible coworker. That was what made the meltdown all the more scary.

When he realized that Charlie was unmanageable
For me the big indicator was [when he got] arrested in Colorado [in 2009]. When that happened, I knew he was no longer sober.

On if he felt that he could help Charlie
Because Charlie and I didn’t really bond over drugs… that part of his life he didn’t really let me into. So I tried, but Charlie made the choice that that [sobriety] was not the life he wanted anymore.

Why it was awkward to meet Ashton Kutcher
It was awkward because I didn’t know if [Demi had] even told him that we’d dated. So at our first meeting, we’re trying to have that ‘hey let’s create some chemistry’ meeting, when all the time I’m looking at him… waiting for him to drop the bomb.

The first season of Two and a Half Men I got a divorce. The second season Charlie got a divorce. So I thought that after a season of Two and a Half Men that it was probably appropriate that Ashton got a divorce.

On having to tell his son he had hired a prostitute in the past
I found myself picking my son up at school and having to give him a heads up that, ‘Oh, you might read something on the Internet today that’s a little curious.’ So I told him the facts of it, and he said, ‘Yeah, I’m not surprised.’ I was like, ‘Wow, okay!’

[From ET Online]

I didn’t realize that guys found it awkward to have dated the same woman. I thought that they usually bro-bonded over that sort of thing, but I guess everyone is different.

Cryer’s son, Charlie, (from his first marriage to British actress Sarah Trigger) will turn 15 in June so I guess he’s old enough to hear that his dad once hired a prostitute. I hope Cryer explains to him that it was a mistake and that he doesn’t endorse it at all though.

Cryer also said that he used to be mistaken for a gay guy and that he changed the way he sits so that he looks more masculine. He’s talked about this in the past. Last year he said that everyone assumed he was gay when he was a teenager, and not just because he played Duckie in Pretty in Pink. He claimed to strongly identify with Duckie and called himself an “effeminate heterosexual dork.” I’ve known guys like that.

Not everyone knows that Cryer rose to fame in the classic John Hughes film. In an appearance on The Jimmy Fallon show yesterday, Cryer played charades with Michael Douglas. Douglas failed to guess “Pretty in Pink.” That’s at about 4:00 into this video. It’s clear that Douglas had no clue. Spoiler – the other team, with Kat Dennings and Fallon, won.

Not sure why, but I think it’s sad that his son wasn’t surprised to hear he’d hired a prostitute.

Kids pick up on … almost everything I’d say. You can’t really hide much as a parent. The son probably knew his parents weren’t doing so well during and after the divorce and he probably picked up on how his dad felt (I think that particular excerpt was quoted here a few weeks ago). If parents try to hide these things, they might succeed in hiding the worst of it but mostly, kids know. Even if they don’t have the specifics. I agree that it’s sad though. But most divorces are.

It has been pretty obvious from season 1 that John was wearing a wiglet. For continuity’s sake, he kept it on. Between seasons, on the rare occasions he was papped, he didn’t have it on and you could see that he had very little hair. Shaving his entire head is probably liberating after ten years of the wiglet.

    • Ameoba says:

I feel like he should have kept it on. I don’t like this look. But good for him if he’s liberated.

    • Esmom says:

I’ve never watch the show so I haven’t kept track of his hair loss but here you can see his hairline and it doesn’t seem that far gone. I’d assumed he just shaved his head for fun or style.

    Eskimo brothers!

Ashton probably didn’t know, but if Demi told him, I doubt he would’ve cared. If anything, I’d find it funny that my co-worker dated my spouse when I was SIX YEARS OLD.

    • Senaber says:

Wow you really put the Ashton/ Demi age difference in perspective for me.

    • Anony says:

      Wow great point!!!!!

      • KelT says:

I was thinking the same thing about Cryer dating her in the 80s. Even if Ashton knew, why would he care especially since he just wanted to forget her by then? Dork mentality.

  4. Sayrah says:

It’s weird that john made a big deal out of it. It’s not surprising that two actors dated 30 years ago. I never even knew they had. Wasn’t Ashton’s entry on Two and a half men around the same time he was publicly cheating on Demi with Vegas groupies? Doubt he would have cared at all.

I like Jon. I think he’s honest and funny. I agree, it must had been terrifying to watch your friend and coworker go off the rails so crazy like that. During the whole debacle of Charlie getting fired, Jon was very tongue and cheek. Which, you know everyone’s expecting a response from you, might as well laugh I guess.

  6. Chichi says:

I dont know, I find it really strange that every snippet I read from this book is about Charlie Sheen. I dont mind humiliating Charlie (not that he cares) but a bio based on your interraction with a co-star is just aaaaargh.

Also was Kutcher even born in 84? Seriously Jon, why would he even mention that given you werent married to her or even acknowledged as a great love of her life or something. She probably forgot she was ever with him, her dating conquests from that decade were very impressive.

For the record, the quotes above are the same quotes from the previous CB story on this book and again the same quotes from THR.

One would say they are the quotes extrapolated from his book because TPTB have judged that they will receive the most media traction and clicks.

  7. FingerBinger says:

I never thought Duckie was gay. Not even when he lip synced try a little tenderness.

  8. jwoolman says:

I always thought Jon was the funniest part of 2.5 Men, even back when Charlie was in his right mind.

I wouldn’t put much meaning into his son’s response when Jon told him about the prostitute story. The kid is 15. Gotta be cool about such things.

  9. Beep says:

He looks better with a shaved head

  10. Penelope says:

I’ve always liked Jon Cryer, and his comic timing was a huge part of what made Two and a Half Men watchable for the years that it *was* watchable, imo. And he looks freaking awesome with his head shaved–I LOVE this look for him!!

If you want to see Jon Cryer in a great underrated movie of the 1980s, watch “Hiding Out.” He’s a businessman with a deal gone bad who ends up as a high school student in the Witness Protection Program. Also, co- star is Annabeth Gish–whatever happened to her?

    • Hautie says:

Cryer. He is a hoot. Always has been. Loved “Hiding Out” too! I just rewatched it recently on cable. Encore? TMC? one of those paid channels was rerunning it a few months ago.

Well Annabeth was on FX’s “The Bridge” for two seasons… which I loved that show. And she did the last year of SOA also on FX. I believe she is even going to be back on the new X-Files shows. Those folks over at FOX seem to love her.

But it is the movie “Shag” that I will always associated with her. 🙂 Which makes me wonder why it is not getting the love it deserves.

  12. Anony says:

Jon dated Demi???! How is that possible! She was like the hottest woman on earth back then…and he….um…..he….he seems like a nice person.
