‘True Detective’ Season 2 trailer: moody, evocative or totally boring?

TD1

I really enjoyed True Detective Season 1, although I think there were three stages of “Watching True Detective” that pretty much everyone felt. Stage 1: What’s up with pacing? It doesn’t matter because the acting is so great. Stage 2: This is the best show ever!! Stage 3: Okay, I’m still into this even though they didn’t really wrap up the story and I don’t think the emotional epitaph of the season should be “Oh, but at least Rust found God in the end.” A lot of people held fast to Stage 2 and some people transitioned to Stage 3 and began wondering how Season 2 would flow, story-wise and character-development-wise.

Well, we’re getting our first real glimpse of everything. HBO dropped the teaser trailer for Season 2 yesterday. This has an all-new cast and an all-new major, season-encompassing crime. Rachel McAdams plays a Ventura County sheriff’s deputy. A ‘stached Colin Farrell channels his Miami Vice sleaze to play a “compromised” detective. Taylor Kitsch plays a pair of cheekbones with a badge. And Vince Vaughn plays a very tall mobster type. Oh, we also see a glimpse of Kelly Reilly as Vince’s character’s wife. Here’s the teaser. No dialogue.

Rachel looks good in a vest. Colin looks like… he’s recycling Sonny Crockett. Taylor sort of looks like the weak link, but maybe that’s just because I’m not crazy about Taylor Kitsch. Vince looks… well, if he’s trying to sell a gangster with some ethical thread, I’d probably buy it. We don’t really know much about the plot, but yes, I’ll watch. True Detective starts June 21.

Lots of contemplative staring and walking.

Goddamn I like looking at Rachel McAdams’ face.

    • Lee says:

      She is so beautiful!!

      • Zainab says:

Rumor has it that Colin and Rachel are hitting it. Don’t know if it’s true, but hey, it’s good gossip!

    • JKL says:

      It’s the best face going.

    • Kitten says:

She’s ridiculous. My brother doesn’t think she’s pretty and it seriously enrages me.

      • Liv says:

I love her so much as an actress – one of my favourites! I don’t get why she’s not more famous – she’s a good actress, looks pretty, did pretty big films…and everyone likes her. Seriously, is there anyone who doesn’t? Maybe that’s her problem, she doesn’t polarize.

    • Wen says:

At first I thought it was the actress from the TV show Mom. They look very similar.

  2. Easi says:

I want taylor kitch to be good in this.

    • QQ says:

Me too But Frankly Me and my gf discussed yesterday and we felt the same way like he was gonna be the weak point.. who Knows?!??!

I sure do hope T.Bone Burnett puts the soundtrack together the last season’s one was a GEM

  3. David says:

    Rachel McAdams yes please!

    • Kitten says:

I want her to do well on this show so effin badly.

She’s f*cking gorgeous but I also think she has acting chops, but never really gets the chance to flex them.

  4. Alexandra says:

I don’t really mind the cast, but the biggest loss for the series is Cary Fukunaga not coming back to direct the second season.

    • kaligula says:

Really, he’s not? I didn’t know that. That is a loss.

    • Jegede says:

Yep. And sequels/follow ups rarely match up.

    • Magpie says:

Yes more than the acting or writing, the direction was amazing. He did all of season one so it felt more like a film cut up in several parts. I love Rachel, but just don’t buy her as a cop. Vv as a mobster even less. Taylor seems super boring. Plus in season 1, the bayou was just really creepy and beautiful. LA not so much. We’ll see but I don’t see how season 2 can be half as good as season one.

    • Kitten says:

Whaaaaat? Did not hear this. Huge loss for the show.

On another note, I would do BAD and naughty things to Fukunaga.

    • Isabelle says:

This. Only big worry about this season not working. They’re also going with multiple directors versus one. Think the reason season one worked so well ONE consistent good director. It made the series very cohesive & with the same ‘mood’. He was the reason the 1st season was so perfect IMO.

I’m glad Taylor Kitch landed a good gig – I really liked him as Tim Riggins. He looks so different though now that he’s older. I hope their chemistry with Rachel as partners will be great, although I doubt it could be as good as Woody H. and Mathew M.

  6. savu says:

I’m encouraged by Rachel being shown so early in the trailer. I really want to see a woman in one of our more powerful leads. I loved what Gawker wrote about the trailer, how it sized everybody up as “odds of being the true detective”. Rachel was 6:1, and I’ll buy that.

  7. Jegede says:

    Totally Boring.

  8. Sixer says:

I think you are right, Kaiser, so many fantabulous elements of S1. It was just let down a little bit by the retreat into procedural at the end.

I will watch S2, but none of the actors float my boat at all. I wanted people I LIKE in it. Meh.

    • savu says:

I feel like that’s why I’m willing to give it a shot – I don’t like anybody but McAdams here, but then again, I never liked Matthew McConaughey either. Now I literally stop everything I’m doing if one of those hippie-new-age-babble Lincoln commercials comes on.

  9. Jen43 says:

I will watch. GOt will be over and I will need something to watch.

  10. grabbyhands says:

I agree with the thought about Season one-every time someone asked me if it was a good show, I told them it was a slow burn, but if you held on it was really good. The end didn’t come out quite the way I wanted it, but I was still mostly satisfied.

It could just be the the first season was so good and the acting was amazing that the second season is going to inevitably look worse by comparison, but I’m not as excited about this trailer as I was about the first season one. It had better music, some dialogue, I believe and better scenery. Cary Fukunaga not directing is a loss-I’m concerned having more than one director will take away some of the cohesiveness.

I’m still going to tune in, but my hopes aren’t high. I hope I am proved wrong.

  11. Deb says:

*Meh* they’ll never equal season1. Just stop already.

  12. Zigggy says:

Yawn fest. I did enjoy season 1 while it was on but I was bummed at the end with a lot of unanswered questions. What was up with Woody’s daughter and how she posed her dolls like that, etc? And caught the one bad guy but what all the people involved in that religious sacrifice of children?

  13. I liked Season 1 (although I thought the ending wasn’t true to the characters). But this just doesn’t give me enough to go on. I’ll probably watch it, but it’s not enticing.
