Sony Hack: Cameron Crowe knows Bradley Cooper is an ‘odd bird’

wenn22009675

Yesterday, Wikileaks published a searchable compendium of hacked Sony Entertainment documents. The Sony Hack dominated the news last December and January, and there were even some high-profile casualities, like when Sony corporate tied the entire catastrophe around Amy Pascal’s neck and pushed her out. Anyway, now that Wikileaks has made the entire Sony Hack super-accessible, we’re getting some additional stories. Nothing like the Angelina Jolie stuff, of course, but some of it is interesting.

Bradley Cooper is an odd bird. Salon breaks down an exchange between Pascal and Cameron Crowe, regarding his long-awaited film Aloha, starring Emma Stone, Bradley Cooper and Bill Murray. Crowe refers to B-Coop as “such an odd bird” (AN EMU, PERCHANCE?) and refers to Emma as “our girl…And her nuances … Little moves on her are huge as u know.” Crowe compares this film to his film Say Anything, which is some BS. Crowe also makes a “joke” about Bruce Jenner “wanting boobs.”

Bill Murray isn’t that beloved. In another email exchange between Pascal and Crowe, Crowe writed: “But our acting is better here all around, so we can hopefully get everything. Frankly, we have great options on all the performances except Bill Murray… who is pretty much what you saw.” BURN.

David Fincher is a witch. Fincher understood that Sony had a “leak” problem before it even had a leak problem. He was pissed that information about the Jobs film kept ending up in Variety and THR and he bitched about it to Pascal.

Rooney Mara is sad. She emailed Pascal about her desire to see a sequel to The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo made. Too bad, Rooney.

George Clooney is sorry. He apologized to Pascal about the failure of Monuments Men.

Adam Sandler is an a–hole. Amy Pascal said that.

No one knows who Rita Ora is. Not even Amy Pascal.

Publicist Peggy Siegal worried about 12 Years a Slave. She emailed Pascal about the Best Picture campaign for 12 Years, claiming that “American cultural bell ringers” worried about a British director’s vision of American slavery. Siegal warns that Oscar voters were looking for an excuse to vote for another film.

Sony planned out One Direction’s personalities. Hilariously, the executives wanted to push Harry as “adorably slow” and Zayn as “the dark horse.”

But he’s the most influential bird.

I loved these! Sooo interesting. Can we keep getting updates?

  4. aims says:

Some of these things we already knew. I still wonder who leaked the e-mails. My husband said it was North Korea, I’m not sure if he was joking about that. I think it was an inside job.

  5. paola says:

Rooney Mara sad? No way!! I would have NEVER guessed that.

    • Dońt kill me i'm french says:

Girl with a Dragon Tatoo made her career

    • GlimmerBunny says:

I loved TGWTDT! I’d love to see a sequel 🙁

    • Hannah says:

The Swedish original was much better. Including the actress that played maras part, noomi rapace. You can watch the sequels of the original film if you don’t mind subtitles.

      • Cali says:

I watched both and while I usually agree that the original is always better (i.e. Let the Right One In vs. Let me in In) this is one case where I loved the American re-make much more than the Swedish version, even with Noomi. I really hope they make the next installment soon, Daniel Craig was wonderful and so was Rooney.

      • ReignbowGirl says:

I’m with you, Hannah. I binged watched all the Swedish ones one night, and they’re just so damn good. I was sad when I got to the end of The Girl Who Kicked the Hornets’ Nest. I just want to know more about Lisbeth!

      • oneshot says:

@Cali – the Swedish original was a made-for-tv production with the budget to match, they lucked into a great actress for Lisbeth but it does stand to reason that a Hollywood-financed and styled version would have a polish the original lacks.

  6. tila says:

Exactly why does everyone love Bill Murray so much? He’s a bit of a pick.

    • LB says:

He’s probably a huge prick but I still love him. I’m so tired of these fake, vapid celebrities. Afraid to say or do the wrong thing, afraid to own up to when they actually do the wrong thing, afraid to be human.

Bill is, by all accounts, very human. He has good moments, bad moments, patient moments, impatient moments. He’s very nice to fans, has genuine interests of his own, and does not give a crap about sucking up to producers. I also love (SPOILERS FOR PARKS AND RECREATIONS) how he agreed to be on Parks and Recreation simply to be a dead guy lying in a coffin. (END SPOILERS).

I’m definitely a fan (can you tell?).

      • lucy2 says:

I get the impression that he’s long tired of the game, feels no need to suck up or sugar coat anything, and has no tolerance for diva behavior from a director, producer, or fellow actor. The people he likes, he’s kind to, those he doesn’t, he lets them know it.

      • Tara says:

Yet people are so hypercritical of actresses and quick to call them the b-word, but actors get away with being difficult, rude, and arrogant.

    • mia girl says:

A while back, many of us here convened and created Murryism.
We know he has faults, but the positive outweighs the negative. I practice my faith daily.

    • chelsea says:

Because he’s a bit of a great actor.

  7. Josie says:

There ‘s another mail between Amy and I think Michael Lynton, the boss of Sony and one of them says they don’t know who Cumberbatch is and Amy calls him Cum Batch, no joke.

    • Crocuta says:

I had to check out what you wrote to see for myself. Cumberbatch wants to play Bowie? I cannot unlaugh myself.

    • TotallyBiased says:

I preferred when they kept referring to him as Bennett. It did so much for my Austen feels!

  8. lila fowler says:

Fincher’s emails are awesomely snarky. I want to be pen pals with this man.

  9. The Other Pinky says:

Bradley Cooper always strikes me as such a needy weirdo. He strikes me as that guy you do a brief job with and suddenly he is calling you every damn week with life updates.

On One Direction, I think they were just picking up on fan sentiment. Harry has always been mocked over how slow his speech is, right back to the X Factor days. And Zain was always quietish which gave him a mysterious air.

    • OriginalTessa says:

To me he seems like one of those ADHD intellectuals that thinks he’s super smart and interesting and has a lot of ideas, but in reality is a little bit crazy. Smart, sure, but not totally sane. I know a few people like him. They sometimes self medicate with lots of pot or alcohol to try to turn their thoughts off for a few seconds. As they get older they’re the person on the airplane that talks to you the whole time whether you like it or not about a car that they own that Jerry Seinfeld wants to buy.

      • Lola says:

Yes to the ADHD comment. My only complain is how, because it’s wrongly associated with intelligence, many crazy people think they’re super smart just because they’re weird and socially inept.

      • Spin says:

Despite what Mr. Wikileaks thinks, he’s tossed the baby with the bathwater and is doing definite harm to more than the big people.
Aside from that yes, Mr. Cooper has a powerful (maybe almost always running) engine that even in his sleepy moments would blow the socks off the dopey people that end up here, including me! I am so proud of Bradley and what he has accomplished. I know he’s taking in, learning all he can from every director. And he will absorb it all, that guy who casually converses en Francais. He allows himself to be so open. He body slammed me (best way I can describe it) heart, soul and body in Silver Linings Playbook. He could pull me out of a comma but now I’m under a spell. I already regret not getting to NY for Elephant Man, expecting a Tony for him. I hope he always remembers he is beloved. Beloved, as is of course also Bill Murray who used to hang in my city and ever since Meatballs, is an honorary Canadian for me.

      • OriginalTessa says:

Is this sarcasm, Spin? I can’t tell.

Um – seriously, with all the concern about fat-shaming and skinny-shaming and slut-shaming….didn’t this bother anyone? Mental health intolerance/shaming?
Associating ADHD with ‘crazy people’ is incorrect and promotes judgment & criticism. The ‘weird and socially inept’ is just mean and hateful.

‘Crazy people’ on its own is also intolerant, but in the light-hearted spirit of this BCoop thread, I get it…. Though really, if anything, he seems like a total narcissist.

      • The Other Pinky says:

Lola, what the …..!!! I have never seen a comment so ignorant of mental disorders. I don’t know if Bradley has ADHD, but even he has that wouldn’t make him crazy. And guess what, people who ARE “socially inept” are frequently blessed with intelligent or creative minds. They are plenty of studies linking bipolar, ADHD, Schizoaffective Disorder etc with other exceptional brain function, so get outta here with your stigmatizing talk. And I say that as someone who really dislikes Bradley Cooper.

Sony hack is the gift that keeps on giving.

    Lmao@ the One Direction stuff.

    • chris says:

The Sony hack is great. I’m disappointed to learn that Professor Gates allowed himself to be pressured by Ben Affleck not to broadcast the fact that one of Affleck’s ancestors was a slave owner. The show is about your ancestors if you agree to be a part of it you can’t choose which ancestors they can talk about and which they can’t. I’m not surprised that Affleck would ask that his past be covered up after all the liberties he took with the truth when he made Argo, but I expected better from professor gates I had no idea he was such a starf*ker.

  11. Maya says:

There are lots more juicier stuff about Rudin sucking up to Angelina after Maleficent mega success and how he is literally begging her to star in a movie. All of this after he called her brat etc.

Plus another email almost confirmed the fact Sony wanted Rudin out of Cleopatra while keeping Angelina, Scorsese, Daniel Day Lewis and Leonardo D in the movie. What a movie that will be..,

The only think I do like is that this hacking showed how educated people are not that good with the English grammar except Angelina who wrote correctly.

    • Andrea1.... says:

Maya you know the media wouldn’t want to carry that… They’d love to always portray her in a bad light. And how the industry insiders don’t like her! *Rolls eyes*

    • Tara says:

Rudin always came off bad in the Sony leaks, not Angelina.

It was interesting to read that Crowe and Pascal threw a bit of shade at Emma Stone too, or at least they are addressing some issue with her –

    • Tiffany says:

But,..but… but Emma is this cool, great girl.

Yeah, I knew there was something try hard about her. Her PR is doing a great job.

      • ava7 says:

Yeah I think a lot of credit goes to her PR team. I’d love to be a fly on the wall to know all that they did to her in their make-over process. When she started out, she was a very homely, freckly ginger with a slight speech impediment. Her new persona is fantastic and I’d love to have her team work on me!!

    • Helo says:

Mia Girl: I wonder if you could please explain what the hell Crowe and Pascal are talking about with regard to Stone. I would very much appreciate it. My reading comprehension is wonky due to a shitty nights sleep!. (LOL!).

Are they criticizing her performance or just Stone’s personality?…or what?.

      • OriginalTessa says:

I’m seeing this as Emma comes with a lot of hype, but Cameron wasn’t getting what he expected from her. I think he was afraid to criticize her acting because Emma thinks Emma is a brilliant actress, but then realized that she’s uproven. Also “big moves” I think is her facial expressions can be really OTT and you have to shoot her right.

    • mia girl says:

@Helo – Below is the whole exchange in the Salon article. I interpret it to be that they are having some issue with both her attitude and performance. Like maybe she wasn’t really nailing it, and maybe it had to do with Cooper – like they weren’t paying enough attention to her or something. That’s how I am reading this. But yes, it’s not super clear.

“They have this conversation about Cooper and Stone, in which Crowe calls Cooper “an odd bird” and Pascal notes that Stone “isn’t bigger than the movie.”

      From Cameron Crowe to Pascal:
Frankly Bradley is such an odd bird getting him right is tricky but he’s fine now so lets just let him cook where he is and take care of our girl… And her nuances … Little moves on her are huge as u know

      • Helo says:

@Mia Girl: I think your interpretation is spot on. I get it now. Thanks!.

      • The Other Pinky says:

Look at the time stamps on the emails you yourself have posted. The chronology is wrong, deliberately so to try and create an impression. If you read that whole thread in correct order rather than a selection, Amy and Cameron are discussing performances in the can (these emails are being sent during editing as previous emails show, Amy has just watched a first version of the film)

In general Amy and Cameron think they have a good range of scene interpretations from all the major cast members except Bill Murray, Incase they want to change the film tone during editing. Murray has played it one way through out.

The big note is with Emma. There are concerns that she sometimes can interprete or under interprete her scenes. The first viewing uses her understated interpretations. “the big lesson from today, you don’t slip Emma in. Let’s giver her fanfare again. Movie has now earned it”. This ties in with previous email, where Cameron notes that the script focused on the girl but the edit has now shifted it to the guy (same thing happened with Say Anything). Amy knows that Cameron is worried that Emma’s interpretations can be too big, so she assures him that Emma “is not bigger than the film” and urges him to push her to the next level so that she can “ignite”. Cameron seems to be very wary on going big with Emma, “And her nuances…..little moves are huge in her you know”. And in that same email he notes that Bradley is an “odd bird” and it’s best to leave his performances as they are.

This is a producer and her director discussing actor performances rather than gossiping about actors behavior. Not surprised it’s being twisted though, stories of divas are far more popular, see Angie and the Pascal emails.

      • OriginalTessa says:

Wow, that interpretation makes so much more sense. Thanks!

      • Wren33 says:

Yeah, I don’t see any criticism of Emma, just saying that they need to have her interpret the scenes a little differently, but be careful because how she changes small nuances can cause a big difference, and a disagreement over whether or not it would be a good idea to have her amp up her performance (vs. overact it).

    • Jellybean says:

I find their logic hard to follow, but having seen Birdman recently I would say it probably has something to do with how expressive Stone’s face is. A close up of her face on the big screen is remarkable. So maybe they are not entirely happy with what she is doing, but any small changes will be huge on the screen and need to be handled carefullY?

  13. Emma - the JP Lover says:

Emma Stone artfully shows how a slit-to-the-navel dress should be worn. She looks incredible! 🙂

  16. Cindy says:

Who knew George Clooney was such a weenie/suck-up? Weird.

So our suspicions about Bcoop are confirmed? Guess we aren’t the only ones who notice his, quirky *cough* serial killer aura.

  17. Lola says:

Welcome to a new era of celebrity gossip, when PR can no longer manipulate client’s images, and hackers dish out celebrity’s secrets.

  18. JR says:

Pascal & Crowe were discussing the editing process of “Aloha”. Most of the time the studio has final cut, with the exception of an auteur like Tarantino who is successful enough to demand that. Crowe’s career has been too hit-or-miss for him to be granted final cut. Someone left the following comment on the Salon article which seems to put it in perspective…
    “dcutler 4 hours ago
Why have you put the conversation from March 31, 2014 in reverse chronological order? It makes it sound weird and snarky? Put the conversation in the right order and its clear they are having a substantive conversation about which TAKES to use in the movie. The actors presumably gave many, many different subtle variations on almost all the scenes (except Murray who only gave a single interpretation of his character) and the director and the executive are having a very serious even literary conversation about how to choose which of the many versions to use. The substance: Cooper gives a lot of takes. Some are brilliant others weird. Emma can be both too big and too little, if you aren’t careful. Both think they erred on the side of two little, but want to be careful of not going too big. Murray only gave one version, so that’s what they will use. None of this has anything to do with personalities, but instead on acting styles and the number of choices the actors have left the director to make. “

    • Jayna says:

Wow. Thank you. And how sad that that is not made clear when posting leaks like this.

  19. Tracy says:

BCoop has serious Mommy issues, for sure.

  20. BlackBetty says:

I love Bill Murray, his movies are classic. Is there more bitchy emails? I want to read more!

  21. lisa2 says:

Well Amy was slow slow slow to get it.. David Fincher was right.. there was a HUGE leak as Sony.

In some later emails..Amy P goes off and realizes that it was Scott Rudin that was leaking stuff regarding the Jobs Movie.. because he wanted Fincher and was upset he might do the Cleo film.. So S. Rudin was going behind Amy P’s back and making side deals; all the while telling her that others were her Enemy.. She wised up too late.. and it cost her some relationships..

Rudin is the biggest BRAT in all of this.. and a backstabber to boot.

  22. LAK says:

I can’t believe this hack is still news….
