Julia Roberts claims she’s never been really thin

fp_1991509_julia_roberts_to_promote_new_flick_in_paris

Julia Roberts has got to have one of the most envied faces – and bodies – in Hollywood. Yet she admits to having some confidence issues while filming her current movie “Duplicity,” with Clive Owen. Julia had given birth to son Henry just six months prior, and wasn’t feeling like she was at the peak of physical perfection. She also said she’s never been really thin, no matter how hard she tried. But she thinks that’s the key to her long and successful career.

You filmed Duplicity six months after giving birth to Henry. Were you confident with your body?
JR: To be honest, I was kind of panicking. I was still nursing him in my trailer, but I felt very supported by the director and Clive. You have a baby, and you just want to stay home in your elastic waistband pants.

And Hollywood leading ladies seem to keep getting thinner.
JR: I know! I look the same. I guess that’s my staying power. My fighting weight. That is a strange thing that happens. People get wildly famous and they get incredibly slim. It never happened to me, no matter how hard I tried!

So, you like to eat?
JR: I do, I have always been a friend of food.

Do you work out?
JR: I do, but working full-tie and being a mom full-time, something got to fall. Or fall down!

[From In Touch, March 30 2009, print ed.]

Julia’s always had an amazing physique that I’m sure is envied by millions of women. She’s never been scary skinny in the way that is trendy these days. She’s always been thin with curves. In Touch has a pictorial timeline of her bust (groan, I know), and it’s clear Julia was never particularly ample in the chest until she had kids. She’s always looked absolutely gorgeous. It’s amazing how little her face has changed over time. She’s said she isn’t ready for cosmetic surgery yet, and with a face like that, she probably won’t ever want it. Maybe some of the new crop of freakishly tiny starlets should take a lesson from Julia and realize you don’t have to be unhealthily skinny to have an amazing career.

Here’s Julia Roberts visiting Paris for the promotion of “Duplicity” on March 12th. Images thanks to Fame Pictures .

She has that enviable long-thin-legs-and-arms body type. She’s lucky to be able to hide any pregnancy tummy fairly easily while showing off the gams.

  2. Susan says:

She looked pretty thin in Closer.

  3. Sauronsarmy says:

She’s also never been really talented.

  4. David says:

This human is a loud, foul mouth, Bitch. Has a mouth Just like a horse and a laugh that sounds like a Special Needs person. She hates the Paparazzi and rues the people who pay to see her act. Last dollar she got from me was for Pretty Woman.Check it out she still brays like she did ther. Who carers if she is fat or skinny. She is wrinkley.

  5. Kevin says:

If thin means the same thing as talented, then of course she has never been thin.

  6. morgs says:

laughing at Sauronsarmy! My thoughts exactly.

  7. Wonder Woman says:

BS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! IN RUN AWAY BRIDE She had a freakin’ six pack. I remeber bc she was wearing this hawaiin outfit and her tatas looked great in it

  8. HEB says:

I’m sure Hazel would be thrilled with that picture of her 😉

She looked really thin in Erin Brockovich, with those skin tight white pedal pushers on

  9. Susan says:

    Loving these responses.

From what I’ve seen of her acting — she’s not “acting” — she’s pretty much being herself. If you watch her in interviews, etc. — it’s like you’re watching her in a movie.

One thing I can’t stand about her in movies is when she tries to act “upset” or “cry” — she is NOT good at it. It always comes across as the same old scene — with her looking around all scared and pulling at her shirt or something.

  10. Ned says:

I think she was always thin. I don’t know what are “the curves” you are referring to, since she never had much in the chest area.

She peaked with Pretty Woman. Her face was sort of “pretty” there.
It’s been years now that her face looks sunken from dieting.

Her face is not near “pretty” any more.

I don’t know of anyone who wants to look like her.

  11. Because I Say So says:

    Love the posts, too!

Agree with all that she’s not really acting, she’s just being herself in different movies. Kind of like Jennifer Aniston…

  12. lisa says:

I thought she was the one who brought down those scenes in Closer. Clive was the powerhouse while she couldn’t act to save her life.
She has always been thin, so I don’t see the point of that discussion with her.

  13. anastasiabeaverhausen says:

Yep, Pretty Woman was the first and last movie I liked her in. Even in Steel Magnolias, I only tolerated her. Her fake Southern accent was HORRIBLE. She was the weakest actress in that movie. (Darryl Hannah’s accent was pretty bad, too, but she made up for it with a bit of….what’s it called? Oh yeah, ACTING.)

I’m so glad to see I’m not alone–she’s always just herself in every movie she’s in. She’s not playing a part, she’s just mouthing lines. I think they call that “phoning it in.”

I don’t get why people think she’s attractive. She’s not unfortunate looking or anything. But gorgeous? Really? Again, she peaked in Pretty Woman. I care not a bit about her body or thinness or anything about it. Eck.

FOR THE RECORD! She was born in 1958 which made her 32 when she made pretty woman. How do i know this? Well i lived in Hollyweird from 1971 to 1978 and in 1974 she was in acting school in LA when she was 16. She went out with a b/f of mine and this is how I know, not to mention the 1974 acting school part!!!!!!! Surprise surprise a hollyweird person lying about they’re age. I would add though when i met her in 1974 she was stunning, sort of pre-raphaelite features with volumous lips even back then.

  14. Amy says:

I, for one, have never envied her face or body. The Emperor has no clothes and Julia Roberts is fug.

  15. raven says:

I find her comment very interesting. She gave an interview at the height of her success after Pretty Woman. The interviewer was fawning over her and how she jogged and exercised. Roberts commented that she wished everyone could be thin i.e. like she was.

  16. Gigohead says:

I would like to second that I DO NOT envy Julia Roberts face. Thank you. I don’t envy those unfortunate lips of hers.

  17. Sunnyjyl says:

The first movie I saw Julia Roberts in, ‘Satisfaction”, she was a big chunky girl. She played a drummer in a girl band. She spent most of the movie having sex in her van. She definitely slimmed down after that. Big Time!! She was not much of an actor then but, she learned.
She was great in Erin Brochevich and Mary Riley. I also liked her character in, Mystic Pizza. If you don’t think she can act then, you’ve never been an actor yourself.

  18. Zoe says:

damn, these comments are harsh! (yes, and funny) but yeah like sunnyjyl said, remember her in Satisfaction and Mystic Pizza? She had a very normal (ok, slightly chunky) bod.

My husband always says she’s pretty, but in a weird way and that he thinks she looks like a oppossum (sp?) which I always thought was funny.

She lost me around the greatly overrated Erin Brockovich era. I don’t think she’s a bad actress tho, just overrated.

  19. Ned says:

I just wanted to say that I don’t think she looks old and didn’t notice any wrinkles.

I don’t find her face pretty, as I mentioned, and I don’t think she is anything but thin, not did she ever been anything but thin.

That doesn’t make her pretty, though.

As opposed to some of the posts, I actually like her laughter, because it’s one of the only things that are genuine about her.

Yes, she is annoying and always “does the same thing”, but leave her laughter alone.

  20. anastasiabeaverhausen says:

Mary Riley??? Are you serious? That was a horrid movie and she acted about as well as someone in a coma! That was probably one of her *worst* movies, so I’m surprised you used that as an example of her acting skills. LOL.

  21. Z says:

I liked Mystic Pizza, but then, I haven’t seen it for 20 years…so I don’t even really remember it.

But she’s always looked fairly thin to me.

  22. heh-heh says:

    Christ she’s ugly.

  23. Brandy says:

    anastasiabea, you spoke my mind.
I was watching Steel Magnolias last night and I agree that her fake southern accent is appalling. She is the one character in that movie that grates on me (well, Darryl too). Pretty Woman is the ONLY movie I’ve ever liked her in.

  24. Megan says:

I agree with the comments, she does just play a different version of herself in every movie. She looked pretty thin in Pretty Woman to me.

  25. frewt says:

yeah, her unique features aren’t translating well into middle age – she was only pretty in her youth – now she looks just like the hard, self righteous bitch she apparently is.

  26. Mme X says:

I saw her on Letterman a few years back looking quite thin–she was sporting brown hair at the time–and I must say she’s looking fabulous these days.

  27. Mme X says:

I saw her on Letterman a few years back looking quite thin–she was sporting brown hair at the time–and I must say she’s looking fabulous these days. I respect what folks are saying re: playing same part over and again, but I thought she was great in “Erin Brokovitch.”

  28. Madelyn Rose says:

I don’t think she was ever really thin, like the young Hollywood girls are these days (Nicole Rochie, Kate Bosworth). She seemed to have a normal body and a pretty face, and I like that about her – that she doesn’t diet herself to an emaciated state, get implants, have a nose job, etc. She seems pretty comfortable in her skin and confident.

I am surprised to see so many people here that don’t like her! Julia never struck me as being polarizing. I think she is an okay actress. Like everyone, I loved Steel Magnolias and pretty Woman, but I was a girl when those came out so maybe that had something to do with it! I really liked Erin Brokovich too!

“What makes you think you can come in here and get whatever you want?” “They’re called boobs, Ed”!

  29. Kevin says:

Bitch was raised in Smyrna, Georgia (where 6 flags is). You would think she would know what a southern accent sounds like.

  30. Joolzz says:

my husband says she could eat apples through a picket fence with those teeth

  31. geronimo says:

I don’t like or dislike her, just think she’s over-rated and not that versatile. She got lucky with Pretty Woman and somehow managed to earn an American Sweetheart tag that she never really deserved. A bit like Pitt who somehow managed to get the ‘best looking man’ tag and still holds it even when the evidence says otherwise. 😛

  32. anastasiabeaverhausen says:

I know, right, Kevin? I will never understand actors and actresses who GREW UP in the South and can’t even pull off a believable Southern dialect! They end up trying too hard. I’m also looking at you, Renee Zellwegger in Cold Mountain. Ug.

  33. yadira says:

    lol @ possum! too funny

  34. ms adamantia claus says:

When I ever I see her, I’m so distracted by how really unattractive her lips are. The picture attached to the story above is proof. Man, you’d think with coffeecoolers like hers she’d never be more than 2 feet away from some lip balm. They always look dry and cracked only Angelina Jolie has worse lips hers look like two rolled brim hats – yikes. I’m always shocked at how “beautiful” people think both these women are, I think they film well because their features are so extreme.
They both have elongated extremities like spider monkeys its puzzling to me as a protrait artist what people are talking about. I think Kate Winslet is a much more attractive woman and a MUCH more versatile one.

  35. pixiegirl says:

To me, she looks like an everyday normal mom. Which I find kind of refreshing.

  36. geselda says:

i am soooooo sick of this self-important hag. her holier than thou shtick is really grating and she is not going to age well at all (horse faces don’t get better, they get horsier.)

  37. greta says:

I loved her performance in Nottinghill. I felt like I was seeing the real Julia Roberts. Whatever acting is, whether the ability to transform into another person or show emotion in front of the camera,Julia Roberts did this. She has an electric presence on screen when she’s working it. I thought the director of Nottinghill pulled a deeper vulnerability out of her and made her seem likable in that short space of time. She also captured my attention in Sleeping with the Enemy. She is good at being submissive and sad, but sure seems forceful and sour in real life.

  38. orion70 says:

it’s funny greta, that in Notting Hill, one of the scenes was her talking about how she’d been hungry for so many years etc. (when they go to friends for dinner)

That was nice little romcom. Rhys Ifans was my favorite little scene stealer in that one by far though.

personally, I really liked her in Erin Brockovich.

  39. CB Rawks says:

I do always get throughly drawn in to Erin Brockovich. If it’s on the tv I can’t turn it off. Part of that is how amazing Marg Helgenberger is. And Aaron Eckhardt being a total babe.
I liked Julia in Steel Magnolias, and I love The Pelican Brief, but that’s mostly because I love Denzel.

She has never ever been *chunky* though. I can’t believe someone actually said that! Grab yo-self a dictionary!

  40. CB Rawks says:

    thoroughly 🙂

  41. tigerlille says:

I never cared over much for Julia, but the fact is that she was America’s sweetheart for many, many years. Her look isn’t in right now, but she is still a very attractive woman, and, the popular look now (enhanced, huge swollen lips, etc.,) is actually just an exaggeration of what Julia has naturally. Her star power is still strong, and bankable, which is why she can come back to Hollywood any time and star in a movie. Her repertoire is limited, but she can act, and she does. For any of you who cite the personality she displays on talk shows, etc. as evidence that she can’t act, did it ever occur to you that her talk show performance could be an act too? She strikes me as a very private person.

Celebitchy readers sure do love to put people down, but, my God, Julia is pretty inoffensive.

I’ve seen JR in person. A few years ago I stood next to her in a coffee shop in NYC. While I was paying for my take-out lunch, she whispered her order for a soy latte. For someone who didn’t want to be recognized, she kind of made a spectable of trying to go unnoticed. I saw her refelction in the mirror behind the cashier and her lips were instantly recognizeble, as was her profile when I turned to look at her. She looked very thin to me but it was winter so she was wearing a coat. Her hands were only about 2 and 1/2 inches wide – seriously – and her skin is lovely. Never a sun worshipper, obviously. Anyway, since I was stalling the heck out of putting away my change she knew I recognized her so when I left the shop to tell my friend who was waiting outside that JR was inside, she stayed inside until we walked away which was only about 10 seconds but come on! Smile and say hi or get a different job.

  43. Ophelia says:

Jesus, you’re all (mostly) very sad people. I’ve never seen so many people taking so many cheap shots at a woman you don’t know. No wonder the world is so screwed up with all the shit people put out there.

  44. Ninette says:

I enjoyed everything about her movie, “Eat,Pray,Love” except that she was shockingly thin in a few shots. Her size really alarms me and this just didn’t work in a movie about food and a Brazilian. I am not sure why women “envy” the anorexic refugee look.

  45. Kayla says:

jeez i hate talking bad about anyone..but, she is no where at all what everyone makes her out to be…and i watched a talk show about 8 years ago and i can’t remember which one, i just remember it had alot to do with her “unforgettable laugh” in Pretty Woman”…ever since i watched that, no matter what she has played in, she bellars that laugh out, and its only cuz it was noticed!…so it makes me feel like that really went to her head…and Lord, i am not one bit jealous of her looks, let alone her lanky body!…and i will have too agree 110% with 2 or 3 other comments on here, she does seem to act like herself in whatever she is playing in…its not acting,Jennifer Aniston does do the same thing too..notice her in movies when she has to play mad, or cry, or act nervous…they repeat themselves, makes you wanna look at the guide to make sure you aren’t watching something else they have played in! she does the same thing when she gets upset in a movie, have you noticed how she will stutter and repeat herself as her part in (acting something out) lol! oh and is it just me, or man did she have the same hair syle for YEARS!!! and the way they would dress her…that BIG!curly hair…and a dress to her feet with pokodots on it or something..except in Pretty Woman…i dunno..sorry my post is so long-winded…i just think she has gotten way more recognition than she deserved..i can think of other actresses that would have been a much Prettier Woman!
