Kate Upton: My smile is my best feature & everyone has body insecurities

Kate Upton

Kate Upton has a new interview in the Evening Standard paper. I decided to use mostly candid street photos to illustrate this story because (as Kaiser reminded us yesterday) Kate needs to up her style game at scheduled events. She looks fantastic in swimsuits and fashion editorials, but she needs a new stylist for parties and fashion festivals. Someone keeps handing her the fug outfits. But her street style isn’t the worst.

This interview has a few interesting bits and pieces. Kate’s ongoing career has been the subject of much media speculation. Kate herself seems a little weary of the talk. I appreciated how she called out Uncle Terry for releasing her “Cat Daddy” video, but I don’t know why she rails so much against social media when it helped her rise to supermodel status. Kate talks again about how she’d love to blow up her social media accounts. One cute part is when she messes with the journo about her favorite body part:

Her favorite feature: “I’d say my best feature is my … my ears. They’re always just hanging there, chilling; they never make me feel insecure. I’m just kidding. I think I’d probably say my smile because it makes me feel good inside when I’m smiling.”

More social media disdain: “Oh my gosh. All … the … time. I fantasise about deleting my social media accounts. But I can’t.”

On helping girls with their body image: “For me it’s about being strong, having the strength to work ten-hour days, and eating healthily,” she says. On a good day she has a breakfast of scrambled eggs (one white, one whole) with spinach and green tea at 7am; a snack of ten raw almonds and a green juice at 10am; a lunch of quinoa with herb-crusted grilled chicken and grilled vegetables; a protein bar at 4pm; and dinner at 7pm — usually sashimi or a kale salad with grilled salmon and cashews. Sounds utterly joyless, I say. She allows herself the occasional cheat day: “I like fried salty food rather than sweet.” But before a big shoot or film scene she will undertake a 48-hour juice cleanse.

Is she ever body shy? “I always am! Well, I am and I’m not at the same time. Every person has insecurities. But this is the body I was given, I appreciate it and I try to take care of it every day as best I can, but I always enjoy my life. So I’m not going to let my insecurities stop me from enjoying life.”

[From Evening Standard]

Good god, why only 10 almonds? There are around 23 in one serving, which I shouldn’t know in the first place. This just goes to show that so many of us are all too aware of nutritional labels, but c’mon. It’s not just about calorie count. Almonds have plenty of protein, potassium, and magnesium. Maybe I just like almonds.

Kate did seem to have a healthy attitude about her body in the face of unhinged, pro-ana criticisms. Kate spoke out against that body shaming when it happened, but the wave of criticism probably stuck with her. That sucks. When she talks about 2-day juice cleanses in this interview, I thought about how she admitted to 2-week cleanses before her SI: Swim shoots. Either her story has changed, or she’s lightened up on her pre-shoot food restrictions. I hope it’s the latter. Oh, and not every single person has body insecurities.

I think she’s extremely overrated, but she seems sweet and harmless.

    • GoodNamesAllTaken says:

I agree. She was awful in those game commercials, and I felt really bad for her because, as you say, she seems like a sweet person.

  2. Rory says:

Her smile is a bit too gummy for me. I used to like her til I heard she was stuck up and rude.

  3. Jegede says:

I hate the snobbery that’s attached to Upton.

The abuse she got for daring to get Vogue UK/US/Italia was so dumb.

She’s still a model she may not appeal to the aesthetics of those who consider themselves online purveyors of fashion.

But she’s a model nonetheless, just for a different crowd and there is room for both.

Ironically the allegedly deserving, so called edgy, blank canvas (blank head imo), models who get creamed over by the like, often look like the random walk by you see here at St Pancras station after 5pm.

  4. AG-UK says:

I do NOT get the appeal.

    • briargal says:

It’s all in the boobs. Pure and simple without them she would be just another blonde body just like a bazillion other women.

  5. Naddie says:

Nice interview, her answer about the ears was cute. But, this “it’s all about being strong” is bs. It’s all about looking hot and pretty, and I guess most of insecure girls would feel even worse seeing her flaunting her assets. Even if it’s not her intention, it’s the media’s.

It’s so sad to me that women are expected to eat a diet like hers to achieve health and beauty. Counting out 10 little almonds for a snack. Always with the egg white and spinach for breakfast. Ugh. I hate spinach for breakfast. Anyway, I am now at a really good weight for me, by exercising and eating what I love, just big portions of the vegetables, fruits and lean proteins I happen to love and very small portions of the fattening things I love. I just had to face the fact that I can’t or won’t deny myself all day every day.

    • Jen43 says:

That sounds like a very restrictive diet, I was bulimic for 15 years, and that would have been a good, non-binge day for me. I am not saying that she has an ED. I am saying that what she eats sounds like a constant diet. She gets paid to look good, so I get it. At least she is not fibbing and saying tnat she eats everything. Also, why no mention of exercise?

    • Sabrine says:

Her diet sounds very sad and awful. I would cry if I had to eat like that on a daily basis. I’m not happy when I look in the mirror but I’ll take some extra pounds over what she eats every day. Plus, I’m not in the modeling business so it doesn’t matter as much.

  7. A says:

Honestly her food sounds delicious to me… Well I would need the occasional cheat day, too.

As for the almonds, she’s also having a juice so I don’t find having half a serving unreasonable?? That sounds like a 150-200 calorie snack which sounds perfectly good to me….

  8. misstee says:

‘She looks fantastic in swimsuits and fashion editorials

No – no she really doesn’t – its the same forced attempt at legitimisation we have to endure with KK. She is lads mags pretty – lets be honest its ALL about her tata’s, but don’t foist the whole ‘she is doing if for bigger girls’ rubbish, because she isn’t that big she just has an apple body.

    • lemon says:

Yeah, I notice apples get labeled as curvy even if they normal size because people think a pouch means you’re fat, where on another woman the same weight would present itself as a round butt and she’d be praised.

  9. aenflex says:

Her diet. Wow. Doesn’t seem like enough food for someone working 10 hours a day.

    • hmm says:

It really doesn’t. Also doesn’t seem like enough for someone her weight? Seems fishy to me.

  10. Isa says:

Her food sounds yummy. Except for the kale salad. After everyone was talking about kale Caesar salad on here I made it my mission to try it. I learned I don’t like kale. But I have a huge bag of it so if anyone wants to suggest other ways to cook it I would appreciate it.

Also, I think her eyes are her best feature.

    • MBP says:

Steam/stir fried in bacon grease 🙂

      • Sabrine says:

My family is appreciative for all the food I put in front of them….except for the steamed kale. They tried….but couldn’t gag it down. As salad, it’s like chewing on rubber bands. Steamed – equally awful. However, baby kale is pretty good.

    • OutoftheLoop says:

Baked kale chips. Drizzle with a bit of olive oil and sprinkle with a smidge of salt, then bake and eat. My cousin clued me in on this. You could also dip the baked kale chips in whatever you like to make them tastier if you aren’t loving them solo.

  11. boredblond says:

Actually I have no problem with her, but the smile thing made me think..oh yeah, Sports Illustrated only picks models for their good teeth…hehe

  12. NeoCleo says:

Her body is okay. I like my own figure better. But I’d take that face any day. She really is pretty.

  13. samab says:

she looks sweet all right …but other than her rack this is nowhere model material(her face is blah sorry)

  14. Stephanie says:

I love that white coat. After looking at years of Duchess Kate photos, I’m thinking I may need to try one coat dress!
