Kendall Jenner: ‘You have no idea how many doors closed on me’

Kendall Jenner

Kendall Jenner is featured in the May issue of V magazine to promote her soggy new Calvin Klein campaign. The shoot is very unimaginative (you can see it here) and shows Kendall doing some strange gym stretch. Kendall’s been seriously modelling since turning 18 a little over a year ago (because she didn’t know what else to do). She’s doing pretty well for herself for a relatively new face. I don’t doubt that Kendall met a few skeptical faces when she broke into her career. Let’s get real though — she did have lots of family friends to call upon. I think she’s a good model, but she didn’t have to work as hard to get noticed as most girls do. Kendall still says she had a very difficult time landing jobs:

Breaking into the fashion industry was hard: “You have no idea how many doors closed on me and how many adults were either initially reluctant to take a chance working with me or who outright laughed at me behind my back. It was kind of hard because all I was doing was going on go-sees, trying my best to break into this business as a teenager. I am so grateful to Marc Jacobs, Riccardo Tisci, Karl Lagerfeld, and Katie Grand, who took a chance on me that first season and gave me an opportunity. My parents taught me that work ethic is one of the most important keys in life, and I believe it.”

On Calvin Klein: “The American Dream. I feel like it’s such a staple. I can barely remember a time, or underwear in general, before Calvin Klein. They’re O.G. I feel honored to be linked to something with such great roots. I can only hope that I’m around as long as CK has been. This will be my first billboard on Sunset, which I’m ecstatic about. It’s really humbling, and honestly, I am a pretty shy person, but being part of the Calvin campaign and seeing myself up there will be a dream come true. I might have to eat every night at the Chateau Marmont with that hanging over my shoulder. ‘Oh yeah, that little thing? I didn’t notice!’ My little sister also wears Calvin, but I’m kind of claiming it as my own. Okay Kylie?”

[From V magazine]

Yep, Kendall Jenner will have her own billboard on Sunset. She already has one in Times Square, although she’s never seen it in person. It’s only a matter of time before we see a selfie of Kendall in front of both these billboards.

There’s also a fake article in this week’s issue of OK!, which says Kendall is considering a boob job to impress Justin Bieber. She reportedly wants to go “up a couple of breast sizes” but insists “she’ll keep it classy.” This story can’t be real. Kendall’s the only Kardashian-Jenner girl who won’t go in for body modification. She can’t tweak her looks too much and stay on the runway.

“I can barely remember a time, or underwear in general, before Calvin Klein.” Perhaps because Calvin Klein has been making underwear since before you were born? Which wasn’t all that long ago?

    • Jegede says:

TBF its quite worrisome to me that when people mention boxers, the ONLY thing that comes to my mind is CK.

I guess there’s also Armani now, but it just feels like CK has been around since the Kennedy Administration!!

  2. Momoko says:

This one confuses me. On one hand I am tempted to laud her for being independent, sober, and mature. On the other hand, she symbolizes entitlement, mediocrity, and hype…This is why, I rely on Celebitchy to do the trash talking XD

    • Josephine says:

She’s just trolling, what her family does best. She knows her statement will bring her attention, and unlike the rest of them, she doesn’t seem to get attention for anything other than being entitled and pretending she doesn’t know that she didn’t earn the work she has.

  3. Rory says:

She’s been trying to claim her sister’s tape has nothing to do with her “career” since day one. We all know Kendall wouldn’t book any jobs without reality TV (and in turn Kim’s tape). She looks bloated in all her pics and her body’s not even that good for a runway model.

    • Miss M says:

I noticed she has been looking bloated for a while.

      • FLORC says:

She was abusing that detox tea. After a while of being on that and then going off for even a few days you’ll bloat.

    • Tifygodess says:

Funny that all the designers she listed that gave her a chance all just happen to be friends of Kanye. Please Kendall. She wasn’t busting her hump to find jobs she was handed them .

    • Nicole says:

Her body’s ‘not even that good for a runway model’?! Really? What? Who are you and why do you think it’s socially and ethically acceptable to publically rate women’s bodies according to some insane standard you’ve set in your head? And why are other commenter’s okay with this? Am I the only one who sees something wrong with that statement? Am I also the only one who thinks it’s not okay for boys to sit by the lockers giving every girl who walks by a number? JFC over here!

      • Nicole, consider this–the fashion industry is very fickle, very demanding, and judges your face, body, posture, etc. In Japan, a model can be hired, based on a foto–then when the model arrives for the shoot, if she doesn’t look the same or better–they say she is ‘cheegow’. Now, think about the name of this site, and who this thread is about…

      • Rory says:

@Nicole: I agree with you to some extent about women’s bodies etc but this post is about Kendall Jenner trying to claim cred as a self-made supermodel. I’m just pointing out her frame is really pretty ordinary compared to someone like Naomi Campbell or Karlie Kloss, who are really built for the runway. From the same perspective I’d say she’s no where as striking or unique looking as someone like Gigi Hadid or Cara. I’d say the same for a guy model in the same position so I’m not being sexist here.

  4. Lucy2 says:

I’m sure she faced some resistance, but then was given opportunities by big-name designers right away. Doesn’t she realize how her built-in fame gave her that? Oh wait, what am I thinking, expecting a Kardashian to be self-aware?

    • Snazzy says:

yes exactly. While I am sure some people looked down on her reality TV fame, it did give her excellent contacts and visibility that others do not have. As said above, the embodiment of entitlement and delusion …

    • GoodNamesAllTaken says:

Right, and the whole Kardashian “work ethic” blather gets on my nerves. Like dressing and putting on ten pounds of makeup and posing for selfies is “work.”

      • paola says:

I agree with you but you can’t deny the effort. They do hustle like pros and maybe this isn’t what we consider ‘work’ but they’re doing what they’re supposed to do to keep their face relevant at the best of their possibilities.
I could never in a million years live my life like that but I am impressed by the constant insistence in shoving themselves down our throat.
They’re so pushy and unbearable that made themselves completely bearable.
Everybody gets used to the worst of the smells if they had to live with it.

      • vauvert says:

I agree GNAT. the stuff that passes for work nowadays is baffling.

Wake up, spend two hours on the shower, face the dilemma of what to choose to wear from inside a huge walk-in closet stuffed with designer duds, spend ten minutes eating breakfast that someone else prepared and will clean up, get in a car, probably chauffeured, go sit in a hair and makeup chair for two hours, make trout lips for two hours in front of the camera, go to a restaurant and pose for paps… Then collapse from all that exhausting work by the pool, take a few selfies, post them to Instagram, get dressed and go out and party in the evening. Maybe squeeze in a spa treatment or a nail appointment. Positively draining.

Oh, don’t forget applying for jobs: hey Kanye, which of your friends can give me a modelling job this week? Only two runways and three covers? How am I going to afford this year’s Bentley with that kind of money? Poor me….

      • FLORC says:

        paola
We agree. They do work and hustle.

And Kendalls words do make sense even if some will never consider veiwing them another way. Because of her name and the show and the stigma people create against them she would get a lot of doors shut to her. More than she would get open.

She’s done nothing wrong. Her family sure has, but she hasn’t. All while being raised by her mother PMK. I think there’s a strong bias that forms in a way of outright hate against someone by association. But im not frequent to these threads. They just seem like such blind hate parading against anyone with that last name or association to that last name.

Ultimately though, any attention is how this family profits. So anyone here saying they wish they’d go away, or are undeserving, etc… are contributing to their fortune. So, they must not hate them that much after all 😉

      • Kelly says:

For some people that’s work. Eh you don’t have to agree with it. But for some women getting up and putting makeup on is all they need to do in life. Oh well.

      • Mare says:

They have stylist and make-up people, so they don’t even do that.

  5. ISee says:

I expect it was half as many doors as the ones that usually close on models. She is beautiful and is clearly a good model, but this constant speaking about how hard it was for her to start her career as she stands next girls from Russia/Ukraine/The ‘Stan’ States etc who have risked everything to get to where they are just shows how naive she really is.

    • thaliasghost says:

Yes. Now, dear Kendall, imagine you are you, just that you come from a working class family in say, Barrow, UK. Or grew up working poor in St. Louis, Missouri, or in abject poverty in Grozny. Or even a comfortable middle class girl in Southern California without any connections to the industry.

Obviously, your conditions were just the same as the ones for these girls and you are just were you are because you had so much more to offer and worked so much harder than them.

      • Dena says:

        Thank you. Enough said.

      • Christin says:

She has lived such an insular life, a day without access to a luxury vehicle would be suffering to her.

      • oneshot says:

Exactly. And let’s not forget the doors that would close in the face of any model who looked “ethnic”, too.

(and no, she ain’t any part Armenian, that’s the older Kardashian sisters only)

      • Franca says:

Armenians are white, so that wouldn’t make her “ethnic”, whatever that means.

      • Eve says:

        Franca,

I am not going to argue if Armenians are technically white or not but one thing is certain is that the general look of Armenians is very ethnic and euroasian exotic and not considered by many as ‘European white’. I know that some Armenians have this weird insecurity of not being considered ‘European white’ but there is nothing wrong with that and in fact thats what made Kim K.’s original look more interesting.

  6. NewWester says:

“I might have to eat every night at the Chateau Marmont” Umm, Kendall you might want to consider hanging out someplace else. Lindsay Lohan tends to stay there a lot and look how successful her career has been

  7. tifzlan says:

Eeeeeeh, i find it a wee bit hard to feel sorry for a girl who was born into an empire, grew up on tv and is worth millions of dollars ALONE without the modeling gig on the side.

  8. paola says:

For every door closed she had 2 opened for her by her family name.
Please stop with this ‘I did all by myself’ because if she hadn’t sprouted out of Kris’ ladyparts she’d be working at the grocery store next door right now and she would have had no chance of walking on a runway, let alone for so many important designers.
The only person in that family I somehow ‘respect’ is Kris for milking the milkable in every circumstance and under any kind of pressure. She is a great business woman and she could sell ice lollipops to penguins. The downside is of course that she is a TERRIBLE mother. The worst mother possible to her kids. Plus she hasn’t prepared any of them for the imminent, unavoidable and well deserved downfall.

    • Hannah says:

She is NOT a great businesswoman. A great business person gets successful selling a legitimate product, not following the sex tape trend that made people famous at the time and then extending their 15 mins using scandal after scandal.

    • Bob Loblaw says:

Exploiting your children for fame and profit is not respectable. Love of money does not justify all things.

  9. Kiddo says:

She’s pretty, she’s very connected, she may have poses down, but her expression (singular, not plural) leaves me cold. In that sense, she isn’t a spectacular model, but a living mannequin instead. There is nothing conveyed through her face, ever. In that sense, she is very lucky to have been born into fame. Anyone else would have never had such vast opportunities to ‘work hard’ with limited personality in looks.

    • Shambles says:

You said it better than I ever could. Tyra probably shudders every time she sees a photo of this one– where is the SMIZE?!

      • lisa says:

lol shambles, thats whatever i think of whenever i see her here

“before me is a beautiful girl. but there is more to modeling than being pretty. a model smizes with her eyes. but your eyes are cold and dead.”

    • Natalie says:

I’m utterly sick of seeing her in Vogue. She manages about one good picture and the rest are blank face in nice clothes. Anna Wintour is behind her career and if this is her way of trying to seem relevant, maybe it’s time for a new editor.

      • paola says:

Anna Wintour is a joke nowadays and that’s why she puts Kendall on Vogue.
The day she’ll be on Vogue France or Vogue Italia I’ll change my mind and I’ll start thinking of her as a true model.

    • Christin says:

She always looks devoid of expression and seems to have an equally bland personality.

I suppose modeling was her first and possibly only vocational thought. I had hoped at least one of the younger girls would do something meaningful and steer away from the superficial.

    • Zwella Ingrid says:

      @ Kiddo -You nailed it.

  10. Karen says:

Does she think with her look and posing they would laugh less and slam less doors if she was an unknown?

She’s not the high fashion model standard body. Not a very interesting/unique face (she’s pretty but models usually have some quirk that sets them apart). Her posing is awkward and lifeless. Without the name/fame I’m not sure an agency would take her on to send on go sees period.

  11. sally says:

A lot of models come from money and connections, Kendall is just known because of the Kardashian/jenner Name. Gigi Hadids step dad used to be married to Linda Thompson (Bruce’s ex) and Gigi’s mom is on Real Housewives, Suki Water and Cara D also come from money and connections.

  12. Allie says:

How can people “outright laugh behind your back”? Isn’t that a bit contradicting? The fact that she thinks it’s based on her hard work that she landed all of those famous names in her first year of modeling makes me want to laugh in her face, not behind her back.

  13. Tiffany says:

As a middle age WOW who is having extreme difficulty funding a job that should pay for education and experience, all I can say is shut the f*ch up you twit. Today is not the day for me to find you amusing.

  14. Artemis says:

All those people that gave her a chance are linked to Kanye in some way. Bye girl.

If she was appealing to designers, they would have given her chances straight away as they do with the real supermodels .Most supermodels were picked up from the street/scouted. Potential.
Nobody was checking for Kendall despite being in the public eye and probably knowing designers. Cara who also has a good background got where she is now because she actually has talent. She can pose, she gives face, she’s great and she has an interesting personality. Kendall doesn’t have anything special, she only has one face, dead eyes and her walk was atrocious. She wouldn’t stand a chance without her family name, no doubt about it.

Modeling is so much more than a pretty face and a good body. She hasn’t show she has that ‘more’ imo. She will remain a Kerr and never a Bündchen no matter how many designers jump on the bandwagon.

  15. jwoolman says:

Oh, dear. The child is still clueless. She should at least bother to talk with other models who did not come from fame and fortune, to find out how hard they had to work to get where they are. They must be laughing at her silly notion that her “work ethic” is the reason for her success.

It’s fine to use your connections, but not fine to be deluded into thinking your success isn’t due to such connections. Luck is luck, acknowledge it and be grateful.

  16. HK9 says:

Breaking into any industry requires work and she is not special in that regard. She should be grateful for the opportunities her last name affords her and move on.

    • word says:

Yes. Most aspiring models go years without landing a gig. This girl literally said she wanted to be a model and had a seventeen mag shoot the same week (thanks to her mom hustling for her). This family really doesn’t know what “hard work” is and they are out of touch with reality. They need to stop.

  17. Jayna says:

It’s her perception, but even though the Kardashians are a joke, I still think it opened way more doors than closed for her. I still think Gigi Hadid is far more interesting as a new model than Kendall. When Georgia Jagger came out, I got why she was a model. She has something also. Kendall is pretty but a little blander, to me, but as she matures may develop better as a model.

I like Kendall, though. She’s the only Kardashian/Jenner girl to come out with any class. She is on the quiet side and isn’t addicted to changing her face or body, because of her runway career and real modeling. Hopefully, getting out into the world away from her sisters’ and Momager’s influence and their trashiness will stay with her and she will stay a more natural-looking girl, who seems to have a nice sense of style for her age. One can only hope. I do have to say Kourtney has stayed normal looking and seems to wear little makeup and is about health, at least she used to be. I haven’t watched their show in a few years.

    • oneshot says:

Georgia Jagger at least had a distinctive look but a lot of her hype was based on her parentage and the fact that she looked like a junior version of Lara Stone who was the hottest model around at the time. Yet Lara Stone still made a better model than GJ, whom I’ve always found pretty limited.

  18. Jenn K says:

    Yawn. Shes so dull

  19. Madpoe says:

Girl move your foot from my door I’m tryin’ to close it!

  20. Naddie says:

    Pretty but plain.

  21. wow says:

    Eh, okay, Kylie.

As her fellow reality tv comrade, Nene Leakes, infamously states “When one doorcloses, another one opens”. *eye roll*

I thought having a billboard on sunset lost its creed once Geaorge Clooney’s ex, Sarah Larson, was awarded one. *side eye* #Kidding

I’ll give Kylie some credit, she is making it work. I swear Kris Jenner and Carole Middleton should co-author a book on how to set your kids up for life.

  22. Dash says:

She should thank Kanye every single day for her modelling career. Actually the whole family should thank him, he really saved them after Kim’s joke marriage to Kris H.

    • Christin says:

The Kris H fiasco should have clearly illustrated how far they will go for a storyline. That’s why I side eye anything they do. And Bruce was apparently a willing participant for years, which is why I am not completely sold that he is not playing the public for money as well.

  23. meme says:

poor dear. she’s had to work SOOOOOO hard to get where she is today.

  24. teehee says:

NOT ENOUGH (Doors closed on her).

  25. cakecakecake says:

    and I could care less.

  26. Crank Tango says:

Girl was born on third base and thinks she hit a triple.

  27. Mylene - Montreal says:

She is a good runway model …. but SO SO SO boring on picture. Nothing original, all the time the same pose. I don’t know what is the big deal with her …. so yes her name buy her career .. SHUT UP KEndull !

  28. Hannah says:

Ugh. Stop trying to convince us you struggled and worked just as hard as a real model. Just stop.

  29. Hotpockets says:

I have an old friend in the modeling industry who bares a resemblance to Kendall. She actually is more of a cross of Kendall and Angelina Jolie. She had a legitmate career for awhile and here is some not so secret insider information, a large portion of these models, both well known and not known double as high priced escorts, because that’s where the REAL money is. Now that my friend is close to 30, her work offers have gone down considerably.

Whether Kendall will admit it or not, her family and their recognition had a huge effect on the success of her modeling career. She needs to give credit where credit is due, because my friend I spoke of never had the margin of her success, but is a much better model. Your connections open doors, it’s a fact. I don’t know why she is do defensive to insist otherwise.

    • Sea Dragon says:

I’ve heard that many times. There are also rumours that Kim and Kendall (I don’t remember if Kylie was included) have visited Dubai, Dubai being a source of serious money when a woman’s body has a price tag attached to it.

  30. Tammy says:

She’s what? 18 or 19? Was anyone self-aware at that age???? Quite a few models today have connections, too. Bianca jagger, Suki Waterhouse, the reality housewife’s daughter, Ireland Baldwin, etc. So what if she has connections??? So what?!? She’s working, not sitting at home. Maybe modelling is not work to everyone who comments on her, but it’s a job.

I just don’t get the shade she is thrown. She’s a young girl, she is not going to sound like she’s 40 years old or mature.

    • Bob Loblaw says:

It’s fine to have connections and be absurdly successful in proportion to your actual talent, that happens all the time, but you can’t then expect the public to listen to you complain about the doors closed to you because of your family name. As many people have pointed out, her career is due to her family connections, there are literally thousands of equally talented young women who will never get through a single door because they lack unearned connections. She’s clueless and arrogant and it’s offensive at any age.

  31. Inconceivable! says:

If she comes to my house, there will be yet another door closing on her. 😀

  32. Cleo says:

If it weren’t for her name and the attention it brings to the brands she fronts, she would not be a model period. That’s what it’s all about now.

  33. Aurelia says:

Yeeep, its not only moderately successful models who double as escourts, its actresses too. Have done for years.
