Lady Gaga in Balenciaga at the Met Gala: predictably over the top?

wenn22450102

Lady Gaga wanted to make a big entrance, of course, at the Met Gala. And I have mixed feelings about the whole thing. Since it’s Gaga, you know she’s going to “go big” and it’s going to look costume-y no matter what. So that’s what we expect from her, and when she delivers, it just seems like… “oh, yeah, there’s Gaga trying to go big.” Self-fulfilling prophecy, I guess. Anyway, I’m happy that Gaga wasn’t one of the nearly-naked women at the Met Gala and I guess we shouldn’t have a problem with this ensemble because she actually did go with a Chinese-American designer. My favorite part? The pants. I really like the pants.

Taraji P. Henson in Alexander Wang for Balenciaga. I love this! I think this is Taraji’s best red carpet look in a really long time.

Carey Mulligan got the worst, most boring Wang for Balenciaga. What is this? A black sack dress with a MULLET? With poorly applied makeup and a grumpy expression? If the Met Gala is so much of a chore, why not just stay home? I don’t understand.

And here’s Zoe Kravitz doing a weird version of Alexander Wang too. I like that the Chinese-American designers were so popular at the Gala, but this dress doesn’t feel connected to anything, right?

    Zoe’s face is so beautiful.

    • Shambles says:

Zoe looks stunning. Perfect face, and that dress flows over her body like water. Amazing.
Gaga looks like a Japanese warlord, and not in a good way.

      • Bridget says:

        I really like Zoe’s dress.

      • Livealot says:

Lmao!! Agree on all counts. Usually don’t like granny panty dresses but she rocks it.

Gaga either should have toned down the hair and make up or the dress. Together it’s too literal.

        Sorry but Taraji looks BASIC.

      • annaloo. says:

I don’t know.. ZOe looks like a She-Ra doll from a lost collection to me in this

    • lucy2 says:

She looks so much like her mother, both beautiful women. I don’t love the dress, but she makes it work better than others could, I think.

      • Lama Bean says:

She does! And her body is fantastic! Hate granny panties but her legs look really wonderful.

      • ichsi says:

Whut? I was quite shocked by those pics because to me she looks like she lost weight. She was always tiny but she looks extra tiny now and with her history of EDs it’s a bit worrisome.

    • Sarah says:

Oh hahah i was about to say she looked like an uglier Alicia Keys! Different strokes!

  2. Cody says:

I love her over the top.She makes the red carpet fun.

  3. Jag says:

I actually like Gaga’s look, which surprises me. lol Not loving the eyebrows though.

Zoe’s dress is interesting. I think she looks stunning. (Wish the designers would do more than have a granny panty look underneath though.)

  4. Tiffany says:

May the clouds separate and lighting strike me, but I like Gaga ‘ s look.

    • Kiddo says:

ME TOO. It is costumey but chic and plays to the theme well. SO much better than SJP’s ridiculous Medusa superhero beauty pageant mess, where she looked like a cartoon. I only wish Gaga wouldn’t have done the eyebrow thing, altho I get the inspiration for it.

    • mia girl says:

I really like Gaga’s look too.

Maybe Mulligan is wearing the black sack because she covering a baby bump?

  5. We Are All Made of Stars says:

She looks fine. It’s relatively tame for her, and I agree with the sentiment that she did something unique without flashing everything. The one thing I always liked about her when she first came out was that her wackiness wasn’t intended to play up her sex appeal. She frequently wore things that hid or contorted the shape of her body. Keep doing you.

    • Jayna says:

She saved it for the after party. LOL Her whole ass is hanging out in her outfit once she took the jacket or cape she was wearing to it.

  6. Rachel says:

I kind of love Gaga’s ensemble. I think the makeup is the straw that broke the camel’s back though. If she’d kept the makeup more understated instead of going for the caricature makeup, I feel like she would have nailed it instead of looking too over the top.

  7. Lilacflowers says:

    Gaga nailed it!

  8. Amy says:

I give her credit for being one of the few to actually wear a design by a non-American/European designer. I give her absutely no credit for the nonsense she’s wearing though, so mixed bag.

Honestly the majority of folks didn’t honor a Chinese designer or style so I’m not sure what the point of the evening was.

    • Bridget says:

It’s like that every year. Only some of the people wear looks in line with the theme, and then everyone else just wears whatever the designer feels like showcasing. But the whole point of the evening is actually as a fundraiser for the Met’s Costume Institute, and the theme reflects that year’s exhibit.

      • Amy says:

Thank you so much for telling me that.

I knew the idea was to honor the theme and fundraising but I really thought attendees did more to stay in line with the theme and bring attention to modern Chinese designers – apparently not, which is unfortunate.

  9. Burgher says:

Taraji is best dressed of the night. Classy and beautiful.

  10. Greek chic says:

I don’t like any of the dresses (again). Zoe kravitz is pretty but this is not a good look.

I read somewhere that lady gaga is pregnant,is it true?

    • Sara says:

I read that too. I wonder if her costume of choice is to cover her bump.

      • Greek chic says:

There were pictures of her at the beach that showed a bump but I don’t know if they are real or photoshopped.

  11. meme says:

no one should pose like Zoe on the red carpet. I don’t get the fascination with her…what does she do?

    • melissa says:

Her mom and dad are really famous, and I think she has acted a little. I’ve never seen anything she’s done

      • Don't kill me I'm French says:

        She’s or was in one of X-Men and she’s a Fassbender’s ex

  12. Jac says:

Mulligan is always giving serious Charlene of Monaco face.

    • Don't kill me I'm French says:

Carey always had this ” always sad” face

    • Franca says:

      I love her look.
I think she’s one of the most beautiful, if not THE most beautiful actress I have ever seen. There is something about her face that is just so appealing.

  13. ¡mire usted! says:

Wow, Taraji P. Henson in Alexander Wang looks great! She’s got a great figure. I’m glad she’s rocking it. She needs to. I just wish her eye brows didn’t go up like that. I’m sure it can be fixed.

I adore Carey Mulligan. She looks so upset. Morning sickness? I’ve been there. It can be rough trying to look beautiful. This dress just isn’t flattering to her lovely figure.

Zoe looks amazing! Her braids are beautiful and so is her dress.

  14. JENNA says:

Waiting for someone to complain about Zoe’s septum piercing.

    • jugstorecowboy says:

      hmm..hers is more subtle maybe?

    • capepopsie says:

You were right Jenna! I do hate Zoe´s nose ring.
It spoils her face completely, and she is SO
      Beautiful. . .

  15. lucy2 says:

I really like Taraji’s dress. I don’t know if this is the right event for it, but it’s great.
Gaga’s is interesting, at least. Cary’s is incredibly boring.

  16. Dr.Funkenstein says:

You know, Gaga isn’t far removed from an Asian equivalent of blackface here.

  17. capepopsie says:

Zoe (and all the other Beautiful women) ditch the nose ring . .
    PLEASE. . .

  18. db says:

    Zoey’s gown is just dreadful.

  19. Norman Bates' Mother says:

It’s tiring to see the negative comments about Carey’s expressions under every single post. She has a resting sad/grumpy face and for some reason doesn’t like her own smile. She might be glowing and jumping with joy inside, but her face will look like this every time. I take it personally not as a fan (even though I am) but as a person, who has a similar expression plastered permanently on her face and can’t do nothing about it. I hate how I look when I smile (in my case it’s more than justified) so I look grumpy/sad//ungrateful/angry/snobbish on every single picture, because it’s the lesser evil. Not because I think it’s a chore to pose for a picture and I’m pretty sure she doesn’t either.

    • lorraine says:

      hear hear!
      Carey looks beautiful, ethereal.

    • MonicaQ says:

I get that all the time. “You should smile more!” “Are you mad?” “Are you upset?” “Is something bothering you?”

NO IT’S JUST MY FACE I PROMISE I’M FINE.

I’m not on the level of Kanye and I do smile (awkwardly) for pictures but jeez, if I get one more person on the street calling me a “grumpy gus”, I’m going to go thermo-nuclear.

  20. Lola says:

I loved what Lady Gaga was wearing. Emperor style!

  21. Tracy says:

Gaga just never disappoints. It doesn’t ever matter to me if I “like” what she does, or not. That’s not the point. It’s always intelligent, well thought through, and has an articulate point of view. I’ll take it every time.

    Carey indeed just looks grumpy.

Miley has one of the “no kidding” bodies of her generation, so no shade on that. I think the look is unremarkable, and the hair awful. But Miley’s Miley.

Best line of the day: “everything’s better with a little Lenny.”

  22. Murphy says:

Gaga’s face and coke bloat are a serious problem.

  23. COSquared says:

    All are B-L-E-H.

  24. morc says:

I think Gaga is supposed to be some kind of bird in mating dance.
The feathers on the train and her headpiece and the bolsterous stance/shape remind me of a Richard attenborough documentary.

  25. MonicaQ says:

    Dem Vulcan eyebrows tho, Gaga.

(Random off topic nerd moment: why did Vulcan/Romulan eyebrows on females look so super severe? Like Spock, Tuvok, Sarek–k, whatever. But then T’Pol, Saavik or T’Pau show up and it’s this immediate feeling of “oh she mad”. Maybe it’s facial structures? I don’t know. I honestly don’t expect an answer to this at all on this blog, just thinking out loud lol)

  26. Carmen says:

Compared to some of the other disasters that paraded up the grand staircase, Gaga doesn’t look bad at all.

    Taraji looks gorgeous.

  27. EliCaroline says:

I loved Lady Gaga’s outfit. It does look like it could be an everyday choice for her -which kind of kills the specialness of it.

  28. Pumpkin Pie says:

I really like Gaga’s outfit and make up. I was afraid to look at her pic, to be honest. But I had a nice surprise.

  29. Alexa says:

I really LOVE Carey Mulligan’s dress and her hair grown longer and put up like that.
