Jennifer Lawrence nears a $20 million film deal, it is because of the Sony hack?

Jennifer Lawrence

One of the earlier Sony hack leaks dropped the news that Jennifer Lawrence and Amy Adams were both paid less than their male American Hustle co-stars. Amy’s role in the movie was large, and much of the film’s promotional material revolved around JLaw. Yet Christian Bale, Bradley Cooper, and Jeremy Renner all received larger backend deals. At the time, Bale was the only male with a proven box-office record. Cooper has since proven he can draw audiences with American Sniper, but Renner has never pulled off a financially successful movie on his own. He’s always an ensemble player (and a douchey one too). Why would even Renner make more than the ladies?

We know the answer to that question. Hollywood (and society) often hands men higher paychecks for doing the same job as their women counterparts. JLaw has had enough, and she’s pulling a Charlize Theron. Hollywood Reporter reports that Jennifer agreed to star in a space drama/romance, Passengers, when Amy Pascal was in charge at Sony. The deal is still awaiting the final greenlight, and it sounds like this HR piece is an orchestrated push. The film would hand $20 million to JLaw and $10 milion to her co-star, Chris Pratt. Sony is starting to hesitate on Jennifer’s salary because this movie isn’t part of a franchise, but JLaw’s team put their foot down. She’ll get that salary, or she’ll walk:

If a person were to try to design a movie project that could simultaneously attract and repel a fiscally prudent studio executive like Sony Pictures’ new film chief Tom Rothman, it might be the space drama Passengers.

Rothman found Passengers awaiting his green light when he replaced Amy Pascal in the top job at the studio in late February. And while the project has obvious attractions — with red-hot Jennifer Lawrence and Chris Pratt set to star in the interstellar love story and Morten Tyldum, who scored an Oscar nomination for directing The Imitation Game, on board — it hardly is an obvious yes: talent getting top dollar for an original idea with special effects that Rothman is said to see as a marketing challenge and that doesn’t appear to have franchise potential. Not necessarily an easy call for an executive expected to bring restraint to a studio that, under Pascal, long was known for its generosity to talent.

Before Rothman, 60, officially took over, Sony already had agreed to pay Lawrence $20 million to star, though her role actually is somewhat secondary to Pratt’s. His deal gives him about $10 million with the possibility (likelihood) of more based on the performance of Universal’s Jurassic World reboot. With its two huge stars, Passengers is important to Sony “because it has a hook; it’s marketable internationally,” argues one source close to the project, and the studio doesn’t have a lot of branded intellectual property in its cupboard.

Lawrence, 24, and her CAA reps are said to have held firm to the $20 million fee. Sources say Lawrence was prepared to walk away from Passengers if she didn’t get to $20 million on this film, and Tyldum was ready to exit with her. [Amy] Pascal herself might have fanned the flames with her February interview in which she was asked about the Lawrence pay gap. “The truth is that what women have to do is not work for less money,” Pascal said. “They have to walk away. People shouldn’t be so grateful for jobs.”

[From Hollywood Reporter]

Sony needs to get it together on this film. Space movies are usually big moneymakers, and the final budget would be $80 million. Jennifer has an Oscar and a built-in audience who follows her to nearly any film (except Serena, ha), and Pratt is getting there too. HuffPo notes that “the Sony hack proved to be a blessing in disguise for Lawrence.” We’ll see. I hope Sony makes good on this deal. JLaw would join the likes of Angelina Jolie, RDJ, Denzel Washington, and Matt Damon in the salary department. Make it so!

    Get that money girl

  2. INeedANap says:

    GET THAT CASH.

Seriously. Girl, get it. Chris Pratt has a much smaller (and more niche) rabid fan-base than JLaw, and she’s has a much more star-powered career than he does. Blaze that trail lady!

    • Boopybette says:

the trail has been blazed already, where have you been?

      • Jesmari says:

I think she is blazing a trail for young women. The women who get 15-20 million per film are usually in their 30s and 40s. I don’t know of another actress that landed 20 million at 24. Just imagine how much she will make when she is older.

      • Boopybette says:

        To @Jesmari,

No offense…you make no sense…and sound 12 yrs old, like you’re playing the nah nah nah game. First of all, this is only speculation – Lawrence hasn’t been paid 20 mil. Secondly, unless you’re just about throwing shade at actresses older than Lawrence – age has nothing to do with this issue…it’s about being a bankable female star that gets paid as much if not more than the guys. If you do it at 25, (as Lawrence hopes to in 2015) it’s not that much better than doing it at 31 as Angelina did or Julia Roberts did it at 30 way back in 2000…(who werent that much older than Lawrence) if it’s only 2 women every decade doing it, breaking them up into age ranges is pointless. Right now not only has Lawrence yet to prove her box office as peers Kristen stewart, or emma stone has…now dakota johnson is nipping at her heels. Yes there are more bankable actresses older than Lawrence…JolieJolie at 39 and Bullock at 51 come to mind…but the point is that there aren’t enough bankable female 20 mil movie stars out there regardless of age. Right now Lawrence has yet to get 20 mil and is known for being vastly underpaid (THAT is the POINT) and she’s yet to open a big blockbuster film under her own steam. Until she does both of those things…you speculating about what what she’ll get when she’s older seems…pie in the sky. Right now Anna Kendrick is more in demand.

      • Jesmari says:

I am not sure why you are so angry. I am not knocking older actresses or younger ones. If you look at the facts she is the most in demand and one of highest paid actresses in her age bracket. She also holds the record for most oscar nominations at her age. Her contemporaries do not have Oscars. I like Stone and Kendrick, but facts aren’t insults.

    • Blanca says:

      @Boopybette
You’re so angry that JLaw has more success than Stewart. You wrote like 3 comments here speaking only about Stewart and Snow White. Rope of Silicon wrote yesterday Lawrence is the big star of the future and it’s true. It’s since Roberts and Jolie that was missing a thing like this

  3. Alessio says:

hopefully this won’t go the jupiter ascending route, but the “low” budget will likely prevent that. good for her team for demanding so much and i hope it’s worth it. she also allegedly got 15 mil for Joy, and my guess is Joy is the movie where we’ll see if she can can carry the box office by herself (i hope so!)

    • Boopybette says:

That’s the thing..she has yet to be tested outside of a blockbuster franchise that people would see regardless (Hayden Panatierre or Rooney Mara could have been Katniss and it would have made the same amount, lol), and critical claim aside, what hit blockbuster film has Lawrence headlined on her own?

What movie has there been where people are breathlessly saying…let’s see the new Jlaw movie!?

I find it odd the same people squashing kstews box office pull re Twilight (rightly so) are now using Hunger Games to say Jlaw can open a movie.

Where’s her Snow White? She doesn’t have one.

So IMO right now, in terms of return on investment…the 20 mil is premature.

But if she can get it (and right now I think its a make up salary for the bad press Hollywood got for stiffing her – paying her less than Renner FFS)..more power to her.

      • Annabelle says:

        @Boopybette
Stewart’s fans always speak about her in the news on other young actresses. House at the end on the street was an horror without pubblicity that was number 1 after Hunger Games and people saw it because her.
BTW Snow White wasn’t a big BO success

      • Sparkly says:

Did you really just try to shade JLaw by asking “Where’s her Snow White”?

AH HA HA HA HA HA HA HA!

You’re right. She’s no KStew. (Thank god.)

  4. MelissaManifesto says:

Is Jennifer Lawrence really that bankable? Are any of her costars?

I am happy she is now in the same range as her male counterparts but I do wonder about the return of investment for this particular movie.

    • Farah says:

Given that Silver Linnings, X-Men: DOFP and (most importantly) American Hustle centered their marketing campaigns around her. I would say so. She had a tiny part of AH, and she still had several TV spots about her character, even though Bale, Adams and Cooper had bigger parts. She was front in center on X Men posters. She’s a draw. Marketing teams wouldn’t build their entire push around her. Sony even admitted in the hacks, that she was their main focus in promoting AH.

    • Belle says:

I got to agree, I see her popularity but personally, she can’t get me to a movie theatre just because she is JLAw. I am 30 and no younger stars can draw me for some reason. They have not proven to be good consistently and I have only seen her in ensemble casts like xmen, hunger games And even in silver lining I thought she was ok in that. Jolie, Denzel etc can pull me in without me watching a trailer but not JLaw.

      • MelissaManifesto says:

It’s the same thing with me, I’m not going to see a movie only because she stars. But I am glad she’s pulling that kind of money after the nastiness that was the Sony Hack.

Thanks everyone who chimed in. Have a blessed day.

      • Chichi says:

Definitely a generational thing. Spend a day on reddit reading what people under 25 are following and you’ll see JLawbeats Jolie by a mile.

      • sage says:

Following and going to the movies are two different things.

      • Chichi says:

@Sage. But then Jlaw unlike say Hiddlestone delivers both. Go have a look at her box office mojo.

      • Gill B says:

Sage, good point – but if anyone can bring in the under 25s (male and female), it’s Lawrence.

      • Tiffany :) says:

The numbers disagree. Her films have pulled in over $1.8 Billion. Meryl is number 1 with $1.9B, but Jen is right up there.

      • paranormalgirl says:

I don’t see ANY movie due to the star. Except maybe Alan Rickman. Alan Rickman will get me into a movie theater seat.

    • Belle says:

You all make good points, she goes bring in the $$ but I was making the point that many of her big success have been because of an amazing cast and movie concept. It is still debatable if she can really bring in the masses on her own with a relatively unknown cast. This may be the one to tell her superstar power though, Chris Pratt isn’t that big yet, I think. But good for her for making that $$ though I believe actors are overpaid, period.

    • Boopybette says:

Outside of Hunger Games, she hasn’t opened a movie on her name alone. She hasn’t even done what Kristen Stewart was able to do outside of Twilight with Snow White.

      • Tiny Martian says:

I don’t know, I think just as many people went to see Charlize and Chris Hemsworth as to see Kristen in Snow White. Plus the entire story line was of the whole “fairy tale” genre that was just then becoming popular. These are the reasons that I took my daughter to see this movie, despite the fact that I didn’t expect Kristen Stewart to be very good in it!

      • Boopybette says:

Come now. There had already been two major ‘fairy tale’ flops, so simply being a fairy tale movie did not and does not ensure success (see the FLOPS such as Julia Robert’s Snow White with Lily Collins and Red Riding Hood with Amanda Siegfried..even Cinderella underperformed worldwide) what made the difference with SWATH and turned it into a Blockbuster was that it was Bella Swan as Snow White.

Even your own preconceived notions/curiosity of what kstew would ‘be like,’ (hateresque though her fans might call you) may have been a factor in you buying a ticket (though haters won’t admit it. Lol)

All of the kstew/robsten/twihard crazies and fanatics worldwide saw Snow White for Kstew – they knew this was her test outside of twilight..they supported her…everyone knows that.

Will she have the same pull in her action flick with ex bf of Jlaw, Thomas Hoult now that she’s no longer the adored gf of Sparkle’s and rumored to be a lesbian? Time will tell. I think the fans still in her corner are pretty rabid.

I dont why people are reluctant to give Kstew credit, especially when Charlize has never opened a film under her own steam in life, and Thor can’t do it without his hammer and Marvel (see Rush, and assorted other hemsworth flops) If it’d had been lily Collins and Charlize and the huntsman it wouldn’t have been the hit that it was.

      • Jesmari says:

JLaw has an Oscar(nominated 3 times) and two golden globes. What does Kristen have? Kristen isn’t even being asked back for the second Snow White movie. I would argue that Charlize opened Moster and got an Oscar for it.

I also don’t think you should compare JLaw and Jolie. They are in different parts of their careers. Jolie is almost old enough to be Jlaw’s mother. She has had a much longer time to establish her career. JLaw was younger that Jolie when she got her Oscar. JLaw has more Oscar nominations. She also scored two major franchises in her early 20s. Her career trajectory is pretty unique thus far.

      • Nikki says:

        @Jesmari

The point is that Charlize has never had a huge box office hit on her own. Yes she’s been the lead in films like Monster, North Country and Young Adult but none of those were huge hits.

If her or Hemsworth were such big draws then why haven’t there other films been hits?

Also awards/critical acclaim are irrelevant to box office appeal. Someone like Amy Adams is nowhere near a box office draw like Channing Tatum is.

      • Giglio says:

        @Boopybette
Stewart’s fans are always so pressed LOL They don’t accept that JLaw with her career and prestigious is miles and miles ahead to Stewart. Lawrence has all HG movies, SLP, Ah, X-men who made more than $100M and 75 percent of audience who saw Days of future past saw the movie for her (it was written on Variety).
Sorry but JLaw is the It-girl and biggest female movie star of the planet (wrote this Hollywood Reporter) while Stewart isn’t so relevant like her Twilight days. At Hollywood there wasn’t a big star like JLaw since Roberts and Jolie

      • Jay Elle says:

… Kristen Stewart is a shitty actress. I don’t know why you’re getting so up in arms about her. Sure, you like her. She’s still a shitty actress. She’s not even in the same league as Jennifer Lawrence, so stop comparing. You sound like one of those women who thinks 50 Shades of Grey was a good book.

  5. minx says:

Wow, that red dress, the red lipstick, the sunglasses and her figure–just wow,

    • GoodNamesAllTaken says:

That’s what I came to say. Beautiful.

      • bella says:

        really?
i didn’t like the red/black dress at all and don’t think it showed off her figure.
and the hair – is that a school marm bun?
now…that flashy silver thing…boy…she is stunning in that.
        and her hair worn down?
        gorgeous.

      • minx says:

Bella, I’m talking about the hot red dress at the top, and I would bet GNAT is too.

      • bella says:

        @minx
sorry bout that…i was mistaken on which dress…
        and yes…i agree wholeheartedly…
that red dress is gorg on her…
        thx!

    • Jay Elle says:

      Gorgeous AF

  6. Elizabeth says:

She’s really the big movie star that missed at Hollywood in recent years (the last is Jolie)

  7. Lucy2 says:

If anyone should get it, it’s probably her. She’s had huge box office, critical, and award success, and there are not many actors out there who could say that these days.
Ugh to Pascal’s walk away comment- the “truth” is the companies should pay all employees fairly, not offer more money to the men. The responsibility shouldn’t have to fall on the women.

    • Sixer says:

I agree. I’m inclined to say that nobody is worth $20m for a bloody film. And, while I’m all for the women having earning parity with the men, particularly when they are more “bankable”, I should imagine there are many more women working in the industry who aren’t stars, and for whom wage parity is much more important. For, you know, making ends meet.

  8. Katie says:

There is a big flaw in the “walk away” argument. JLaw could do it and very much be okay because she’s proven herself as a movie star. She’s talented and she’s got a massive fan base that is broader than just rabid teenagers. However, young upstarts are a dime a dozen. Walking away and not being so grateful for jobs will ruin their chances of making it.

  9. applapoom says:

I am not a huge fan but she deserves it. She is the only real movie star in her 20s. Everyone else who had that pull is pretty much now in their 40s.

    • Franca says:

No she frickin doesn’t. No one deserves 20 million for talking in front of a camera! Yes, maybe she deserves it compared to other actors ( personally I don’t get it, she’s a mediocre actress and annoying) but no actor deserves that kind of money.

      • Amanda says:

Why are protestes only with a woman? Di Caprio has $25M salary, Depp with all his flops $20M but nobody say something about this. But JLaw? A young woman? This is misogyny

      • Franca says:

I said ALL actors. You can not convince me that an actor deserves 20 million. I know the market works that way, but still. And Leo is one of the most overrated actors ever.

I do like that the bighest movie star under 30 is a woman.

      • Jo says:

My sentiments exactly! Conversations like these make me sick! Why do any of these actors make that kind of money to begin with?! Our society is so warped…my husband is a social worker who spends his days either removing children from unsafe homes or trying to help poor families keep their families together and he makes a measly $32k a year. I do pretty good as a RN but it’s a travesty that people who are educators, social service workers, etc make so little money. What’s even worse is that minimum wage is $7.25 in PA and people are expected to survive and support their families of that kind of money. Could you imagine making $7.25 a hour and paying $11.00 for a movie ticket when you want to have a night out. I know it’s a little off topic but this post bugged the hell out of me. *steps off soapbox*

      • lucy2 says:

I agree it seems crazy to pay anyone $20 million for one job, but look at the product. The three Hunger Games movies she’s starred in have made over $2 billion world wide. These few stars are paid so much because the money is there, the product they’re a part of sells.

      • Tiffany :) says:

“but no actor deserves that kind of money”

They aren’t being paid for the effort of what goes into the work, they are being paid for the amount of money their work brings in. Actors generate BILLIONS of dollars in revenue! Getting paid millions makes sense.

  10. Nanea says:

    Chris Pratt? Seriously?

It was initially Keanu’s movie, he has been developing it with Jon Spaiths.

    • Lindy79 says:

Chris Pratt has to be in everything now. Its been written into every countries laws.

    • mia girl says:

I actually think Pratt and Lawrence will have good chemistry.

  11. Jules says:

    Get that money baby girl!.

Sony will pony up because it’s the right and smart thing to do.

Good for Jennifer Lawrence for standing her ground…she’s worth the 20 mil.

  12. Brett says:

She’s a good enough actress but good god does she have an unattractive face. It’s so bloated.

Body is on point though. Get money, I guess.

  13. GlimmerBunny says:

She’s so gorgeous in the last picture with the silver dress! When is that from?

JLaw and Chris Pratt are my Number 1 girl and guy crush so I CAN’T WAIT for “Passengers”!

    • Ninks says:

It’s from the Met Ball after party.

The movie sounds great, but I think the real fun will be in the Lawrence/Pratt promo. If they have good chemistry, their interviews will be comic gold.

      • GlimmerBunny says:

Wow, she looks so much better in it than she did at the actual Gala.

I’m really excited for the promo tour too, I think they are going to get along really well.

      • lucy2 says:

She always gets stuck in some God-awful Dior on the red carpet, and then rocks the after party in something great.

  14. Talie says:

Here’s what’s f*cked up: They would rather lose J.Law and replace her with an actress who will take half or even less. If it was Chris, they wouldn’t even hesitate to meet his demands.

  15. blue marie says:

    Meh, good for her

  16. Jess1632 says:

Is she worth 20 mill to just look dewy eyed the whole time?? No. And to see that she’s getting paid as much as other actors who’ve been round longer than she has been relevant for ughhh! She doesn’t deserve Denzel money!!! She cannot act!

    Rant over

    • Nin says:

      Hello jelous!

    • Jbap says:

Lawrence can’t act?! Lucky for her, she seems to have fooled the critics, the studios and all those AMPAS members who have given her three Oscar noms by the age of 24. She must be the greatest PR genius of all time…

    • Franca says:

I wouldn’t say she can’t act, but she:s nowhere near as good as the hype that surrounds her claims her to be. There are actresse her age who are much better.

      • Jbap says:

Maybe there are, but I don’t see anyone else out there in their 20s with her star power – and that’s what the studios pay good money for.

      • Franca says:

Okay, she has star power. She’s like Angelina Jolie, the biigest star power of her generation, but not the biggest talent.

      • Alex says:

She has charisma and personality- it doesn’t mean she can act. For me, she overacts badly and people pass it as great acting. There are definitely better actresses out there but they don’t have her great team or media power. But of course everyone is entitled to their opinion. She deserves bigger paycheck but I don’t think that big for that kind of movie… It won’t be some franchise or Disney movie to earn so much. It will turn out as this CUmberbatch movie.

  17. Gill B says:

This is a risk for J-Law, as she risks backlash if the film doesn’t work out – and there are haters out there waiting to pounce. The leak of this story is also a little suspicious: I figure Sony are trying to force her to back down, or exchange cash up front for more back-end points. However, fair play to her for getting this type of money, both for this and for Joy. Yes, no one should earn that much, but much less talented stars have earned more than that over the years, not to mention investment bankers, steroid-pumped athletes etc. J-Law has a unique combination of acting talent, looks and personality, and she and her team have managed her career brilliantly over the last few years. She’s also reliable, and smart – she’s highly unlikely to screw up a press tour like Downey, Renner and so on have been doing with AOU.

Incidentally, I read somewhere that her agent signed her up when she was 17. That decision looks better and better with every passing month.

    • Sandra says:

Some persons are saying about a backlash since2013 and…. There wasn’t in all this time

    • Franca says:

She doesn’t strike me as smart. Not at all.
And she said pretty obnoxious things but people always give her a pass.

And yes this is my 3rd post so I’m going to stop now, but I really don’t like her.

    • oneshot says:

She’s put her foot in her mouth enough times while doing press, the certainty that she’ll screw up less than Renner or RDJ isn’t really based on that solid a foundation.

      • Anna B says:

When has she made a negative impression on a press tour? Every time she does one the media fall over saying how charming she is, bar a few people like Chloe Savigny muttering in a corner about her ‘crassness’. And she seems very smart to me – not an intellectual, but someone who has a very good sense of how to present herself.

  18. Cali says:

She deserves it. I just hope Amy Adams is getting paid the same for her movies because she deserves it just as much, if not more. I was FLOORED when I saw American Hustle and realized how tiny JLaw’s role was after the way they pushed and touted and raved about her performance but not as much for Amy’s. Amy was a freaking rock star in that movie. And Renner? He was a side-player who never ever should have made more money than the ladies.

  19. JENNA says:

    Tom Rothman is the worst.

  20. Anna B says:

She looks stunning in the red and silver dresses in those photos (the Dior is meh at best). She looks every inch the movie star.

Having said that, I admire J-Law for how she has built her career on non-sexy, non-girlfriend roles – American Hustle aside, and even there there was more going on that just sex appeal.

    • Nikki says:

Her role in SLP was that of the sexy (and crazy) love interest to Copper. Also her character in X-Men involves sex appeal. Even another one of her roles in Like Crazy was that too. Are you familiar with her filmography? Lol

Katniss and her character in WB is the most notable times she didn’t have to be sexy or serve as the love interest to a man.

      • Anna B says:

So her breakthrough role (Winter’s Bone) and her star-making role (the HG movies) were non-sexy, non-love interest parts, and in SLP and X-Men there was so much more to her characters than being the token girlfriend/eye candy. Her career hasn’t been defined by her looks – that’s my point.

  21. Bea says:

I’m not a fan and I think she’s terribly overrated but I am so rooting for her in this. Get that money Jennifer!

  22. Blip says:

She’s played the game beautifully and deserves every cent. Go get that money girl.

  23. Helo says:

Absolutely get that money girl!!. Jennifer Lawrence is at the top of her game and deserves the 20 million no doubt.

In my opinion, (and it seems that critics and industry people agree), Lawrence is one of the most talented actresses in Hollywood right now, definitely of her generation.

  24. Tara says:

Let’s give props to the fierce goddess Charlize Theron. I’m sure she had a lot to do with it. Get that money Jennifer!

  25. perplexed says:

Will she be the youngest actor ever to pull in $20 million?

I think the last movie star at her level at her age was Julia Roberts

    • lucy2 says:

The Harry Potter kids were probably in that range towards the end of the franchise, but I don’t know how old they were at the time in comparison.

      • oneshot says:

By the time the last movie was released, Radcliffe and Watson were 21 and Grint 22, I believe.

  26. Lucy says:

She deserves and is worth every penny. No discussion.

  27. oneshot says:

    Get that money, Jlaw!

She deserves every penny of it, glad to see the hack led to something good for her.

  28. polonoscopy says:

    BITCH BETTER HAVE MY MONEY

  29. Veronica says:

She’s a household name at the height of her fame, so why the hell not? Pressure is on, though. The problem with headlining for big money is that you have to deliver. I hope for her sake that the movie does.

  30. LAK says:

    Good for her.

  31. Alyce says:

Go Jennifer! (That first dress is killer by the way)
