Jennifer Aniston will likely star in ‘Mean Moms’, the mom version of ‘Mean Girls’

Just FYI: Jennifer Aniston’s llama sweater is Isabel Marant. These are just some assorted photos of Aniston out and about in NYC last week. She seemingly went to NYC just to hang out with friends and not to see her fiancé Justin Theroux. I don’t think Theroux was in NYC at the same time. Weird, right? But it felt like Aniston wanted to be seen all of a sudden after “going dark” for two months following the Oscars. Aniston waged one of the most aggressive Oscar campaigns in recent history, and at the end of the day, Academy voters denied Aniston a nomination. But she did get to present, so at least there’s that.

Aniston repeatedly said during her aggressive Oscar campaign that she hoped Cake would be the signal to directors and producers that she could handle more complex roles, that she wasn’t just a rom-com actress. For what it’s worth… I have issues with Jennifer Aniston, but I’ve always thought she was a gifted comedienne. She has great timing, she can deliver well-written comedic lines and she’s not afraid to look foolish for the sake of a laugh. Her attempts to be “more” than a comedic actress have always gotten her into trouble. So… I for one was hoping that Cake would not bring her a truck full of drama scripts. And it hasn’t. It looks like Aniston’s first post-Cake film will be… a sequel to Mean Girls?!

New Line Cinema is setting Sean Anders to direct Mean Moms, and is targeting a summer start date for a film that has Jennifer Aniston eyeing the female-driven comedy. They worked together in Horrible Bosses 2 at New Line.

Mean Moms matches the spirit of Mean Girls with an adult cast. A happily married mother of two who moves from small-town America to the high–class suburbs suddenly must confront the cutthroat world of competitive parenting. Jill Messick is producing with Offspring Entertainment partners Jennifer Gibgot and Adam Shankman. Aniston doesn’t have a deal at this point and insiders in her camp said she has other options this summer, so stay tuned on this one.

Like Mean Girls, this movie is based on advice books written by Rosalind Wiseman. This film is based on Queen Bee Moms And King Pin Dads: Dealing With The Parents, Teachers, Coaches, And Counselors Who Can Make — or Break — Your Child’s Future; Mean Girls was based on Queen Bees And Wannabes. It isn’t precisely clear what role Aniston will play or if it will be closer in spirit to Rachel McAdams or Lindsay Lohan.

[From Deadline]

This has the potential to be really good and really funny. I hope that Aniston doesn’t get cast as the fish-out-of-water Lohan character. It would be much funnier (and truer to her real personality) if she was cast as the Queen Bee of the cool moms, the McAdams character. There’s a Mommy Mafia in LA and Aniston is very much aligned with that group (despite the fact that she doesn’t have kids). That’s who she is – she’s the “you can’t sit with us” Queen Bee.

    NO TINA FEY NO WAY

    • Bobbityboo says:

      Thank you.

    • Boopybette says:

I agree. If it’s not associated in any way, shape or form with the Tina Fey written/produced comedy ‘Mean Girls,’ then it’s no sequel. This sounds like her PR flack, Stephen Huvane, is up to his usual tricks trying to make her lame projects sound like more than what they are. If he’s not asking huffpo to breathlessly write about some upcoming rom com ‘almost nude scene,’ before she even steps onset (that somehow never actually gets filmed), he’s playing games like these and trying to fool the masses. Tina Fey should sue. Lol

    • DottieDot says:

      Tina Fey = meh!

      • Boopybette says:

If Tina Fey was ‘meh,’ 90s TV sitcom hacktress Aniston wouldn’t be trying to hook her no name fledgling projects to Tina’s coattails. Lolol

  2. Bridget says:

Does this mean I’m going to have to see a zillion articles about “mommy wars” that are going to go along with that project? Sheesh.

    • Don't kill me I'm French says:

I think Leslie Mann will be in the movie also.I can see her to act the cold bitch

    • Jan Harf says:

      Right? So totally obnoxious.

    • Boopybette says:

Yup. Also, its been done already, and way better of course by oscar winner Holly Hunter – much better than anything Aniston could woodenly walk her way thru. The crazy cheerleader Mom movie.

  3. MadMenluv says:

    sounds like fun!

  4. Christin says:

The mean moms movie concept does sound promising. And I agree about JA being better in comedies. She was fine in the ensemble classic Office Space.

    • Boopybette says:

She was barely in it. That’s why she was fine. The plot points of the movie she wasn’t even a part of.

    • minx says:

She’s finally getting the mom roles.
Must be a blow to her ego.

      • Boopybette says:

I’m sure it will be written in her contract that her ‘children,’ can’t be any older than toddler age. Even though it means she would have had to have them at 44 years of age. Lolol

  5. mia girl says:

    I’d watch it

  6. jules says:

    What about Jennifer Garner?

    • GlimmerBunny says:

She should be the “Gretchen” character!

      • Boopybette says:

Hello. These aren’t the same characters. This has nothing to do with Tina Fey’s ‘Mean Girls,’ – my guess it’s just Aniston’s flack and the no names behind it, trying to get financing on Tina’s back.

    • funcakes says:

I was just thinking who could play the nice mom to Jennifer s mean mom and that would be perfect. Garner is rather good in comedies.

  7. Carmen says:

The culmination of a life before the cameras.
    🙄

  8. Luca76 says:

If she really just wanted dramatic roles she would do TV, even a miniseries or movie on cable.
She wants an Oscar. ( maybe she’ll get it one day I’d have never thought Sandra & Matthew would have one).

    • FingerBinger says:

She’s already done tv. Maybe she sees that as a step back.

      • Luca76 says:

I’m sure she does. I think that she’s always thought that way which is why she’s done so many mediocre films as opposed to better TV projects I’m sure she’s been offered.

      • Boopybette says:

While I think she’s done mediocre TV and mediocre movies because she’s a mediocre to awful actress. If there’s anything that annoys me more about her still coddling fanbase…it’s the idea that after 20+ years of being lucky enough to be a celebrity on middling talents she deserves shots at good scripts or better movies. As if there was some magical script out there that she could have gotten her hands on that would have made her Helen mirren. Just stop already. She’s Natalie from facts of life, and maybe not even that talented, who frankly has had enough time and money to have turned it around. Face it. She’s not capable. Even if she was, she’s not watchable or interesting enough onscreen by herself…even the small one. Her best work she still needed an ENSEMBLE of which she was the least talented there. So why people keep saying she needs to go back to TV I have no idea. She’s no Mariska Hargitay by any stretch.

      • darkdove says:

I dont think she will go back to TV unless she has no other options she probably hates being a TV girl sitcom actress her whole game hussle since friends ended and her divorce is about being the girl next door, who can also be a movie star with the sexy bod killer legs and the best hair that all girls want to be friends with and men want to get romantic with, and I used the word girls because despite her age nearly 50 too many people still treat her as if she were a girl and not a woman.

      • Green Girl says:

I wish she’d return to TV. I think she’d do much better on a good/great TV show than another film. She has good timing, and I think she would do a great job on a Parks and Rec-esque TV show.

    • KellyBee says:

I’ve all ways thought she should go back to TV or maybe Netflix, I don’t see it as a step back ether because that were she shines. I feel the same way about Katie Holmes, Ryan Reynolds, Jessica Biel among others. Not every TV star can make it as a movie star like Clooney.

      • doofus says:

and, tbt, the stuff that Netflix is putting out (not to mention series on HBO, SHO and even basic cable channels like FX) is pretty good, and some is WAY better than the crap that gets green-lit for movies (especially some of hers).

I think she’d do great on a series like her “fiance” is doing.

however, I disagree with some of the posts on here…this could be a VERY funny movie (because we all know at least ONE “mean mommy”), and I think she might do well as the Queen Bee of the mean mommies. I think she did great as the gross dentist in Horrible Bosses (the first one, didn’t see the second) so she can do roles that are opposite of her rom-com roles.

  9. lucy2 says:

I just rewatched Mean Girls on TV the other day, so this idea sounds fun. Have to say, for all the talk of how Lindsay was so great in it, she was pretty blah upon rewatching it again. All the other actresses were so much more entertaining. I think people just say that because it was a fun movie and she torpedoed her career after it so it’s one of the few bright spots on her resume.

  10. Catelina says:

I dont necessarily think Aniston is a great dramatic actress/want to see her in tons of prestige dramas now. But its a little sad that she made such a big to-do about wanting to be taken seriously, and how she feels like she’s blossoming now and all that. Only to have her first post Cake project be literally exactly what she’s been doing all her career up until Cake.
Although, I dont have THAT much sympathy considering she has the connections and the money to make her own indie vehicles if she really wanted to. Considering she has expressed interest in directing before, maybe now is the time to try that out.

    • Boopybette says:

Don’t get it twisted. Aniston doesn’t have much of a choice. No one is breaking down her door and sending her the good scripts.

That’s why she reportedly: had to buy her own indie movie cake because no one else was impressed enough to want it and distribute it – so she foots the bill, then embargos it so no one can critique/review it, then creates her own fake press releases and ‘Oscar’ headlines with her PR flack.

When aniston spends her own money its because she’s more desperate than ever…it’s only getting worse…as this press release riding Tina fey’s back without her permission, demonstrates.

  11. Loopy says:

Sounds a bit Stepford wives like

  12. klaas says:

She could play Janice Ian-like character.

  13. taxi says:

At 46, her best rom-com days are behind her. Can she suddenly become “serious?” She hasn’t had much experience with that, so this is probably a good transitional move. I can see her as Blanche Devereaux in a new “Golden Girls” in 10 years,

    • Boopybette says:

Girl pleez. Lol No way does she have the chops or sass or charisma of the great Rue McClanahan.

    • truthSF says:

A less funnier Betty White’s character maybe, but there’s no way in hell can she emulate even an ounce of Rue McClanahan’s charm. Even suggesting that she can take a character like Blanche is just blasphemy. You just know Rue would turning over in her grave if this sh*t ever happens.

    • NewWester says:

If that happens then Candace Bergen has to play Dorothy

  14. someone says:

I get that they are actresses and their roles have nothing to do with their real life but I don’t buy Jennifer Aniston as a mom. Maybe because so much focus has been made on her NOT having kids and does she or doesn’t she want them. There are plenty of other actress that don’t have kids who I can buy into when they play a Mom (for instance Cameron Diaz in My Sister’s Keeper) but for some reason I don’t buy it with JA. I’d go see it though, because she does do good comedy.

    • Boopybette says:

Plus because of all her neurosis she seemed to me to have an adolescence that extended into her 40s. She was more concerned with playing hot/sexy…than being a mother onscreen. If she was playing a mom it had to be to very very young children. No teens. No teen girls especially. If she’s playing mom to kids that are older its usually a ‘fake mom but really a stripper’ part. She always has to balance ‘mother,’ with a pseudo nude scene. I think that’s how she views life: mother equals old and not the PYT. She wants the 19 yr old daughter parts. Lol

      • darkdove says:

I agree just look at the way she behaves and dresses at award shows or premieres she always wants to look the hotest with her breast spilling out she was so hard at working in not looking old or ugly after the promotion of cake or groping any of her supposed friends.

    • chick binewski says:

I agree somewhat with everyone’s comments here. JA’s personal image is so important she pursues nothing interesting because it might take away from all her sexy. I empathize with famous actresses – each pound and wrinkle being scrutinized & mocked must mess up your head. But JA’s fierce grip on youth doesn’t do the reputation of her talent any favors.

I don’t get why she got away with holding up “Cake” as her breakthrough dramatic role when she already received a lot of attention for “The Good Girl” (deserved) and “Derailed” (not so much). But since Aniston’s one requirement now seems to be playing the hot chick next door I stay away from her movies as they all look like total crap.

    • Boxy Lady says:

I understand about not really seeing her as a mom but I think she would do rather well as a judgy, mean mom. I think, because of her comedy background, she would play that kind of role to the hilt. As for some up-thread who are wondering why she doesn’t go back to TV, maybe she doesn’t want to commit to another show. Or maybe because she won an Emmy and a Golden Globe for Friends, she wants to get at least an Oscar nomination because it would mean validation from yet another crowd. But in my opinion, if she REALLY wants to prove herself worthy, she needs to go on Broadway.

  15. Peggy says:

It is her publicist trying to shame Mean Girls Director/producer into hiring her.
All her paparazzi walks in NYC were for nought, you’ve to be talented to act on Broadway, there are no second takes.
What’s up with Goree Girls? Justin supposedly rewrote the script, no wonder her company is called Echo, when you walk the hallways all you hear are echoes.
She is a rich woman, why not finance a movie, after Cake the Chinese investors are not going to waste anymore money with her in the starring role, Cake made less than two million.

  16. Cindy says:

This could be really funny….there is such a thing as mean girl moms. I lived for a few years in a wealthy very liberal college town where many of the moms grew carrots in their backyard to make baby food. Nothing wrong with that, but I felt like a criminal for buying mine from the store. Moms can be super competitive and judgy. I bet Andersen gets cast as the “nice” one though.

  17. sali says:

    Sounds like fun go jenn!

    • Boopybette says:

Except Michael had his big chin put in, while she’s gradually behaved her chin/jaw down over time and re-set it as well.

  18. The Original G says:

This sounds dreadful. Is this all women can hope for when it comes to female-centric comedies?

BTW, Lindsay looks old enough to play her own mother.

  19. tracking says:

    Meh.

  20. Pandy says:

I can’t believe her nipple is showing through a sweater!

  21. cheryl says:

Wouldn’t this be a mom com?

  22. NeNe says:

With her in it it’s know doubt going to be a huge flop!!

  23. Beee says:

Excellent or just better than usual? Because, the bar is set so darn low for her that if she does anything a little different & her fans want to act like she is Cate B or Meryl S.

And 2 films like that in a decade is not impressive.

  24. Tarsha says:

The Good Girl, yes. But her acting in Cake was woeful.

    • Boopybette says:

….her acting in the good girl wasn’t that great either, it’s just that her enabling dwindling fanbase regurgitates that movie title so much in defense of her no talent, that it’s become their ‘go to,’ rallying cry (‘B-b-but what about The Good Girrrrl!’ Lol) In fact, the director of that film gets more of the credit for her tolerable performance as he is said to have forced her to tie down her hands so that she wouldn’t twirl her hair all Rachel like. Lol

  25. Iheartgossip says:

Ugh. Another day, another Maniston article. I don’t understand the ‘worship’ of her. But that’s just me. And no, I won’t be seeing this Rachel Green movie either.

  26. Sassback says:

I totally disagree, I think the poster is misinterpreting the connection to Mean Girls too literally. ja would make a better no-nonsense down-to-earth mom than a Whole Foods Organic Mom, which seems pretty much what this will be about more than it will be about a nice mom who wants to sit with popular moms. The mean mom would be more like Gwyneth Paltrow. Jennifer Garner would make a better evil character because she’s so nice and pretty. Aniston will forget to water down her kid’s juice and will let them eat a Snickers at soccer and the other mom’s will freak. I don’t think they would make her character naive but I don’t think she seems like a Goopy Paltrow either.

  27. Lola says:

She’s a pretty lady, but I have never had any interest in seeing any of her movies. Some people you want to see, regardless of movie, others no. It is what it is. I’m sure she has plenty of fans to keep her going on, just don’t see blockbuster stuff. She should still be very happy as she has made great money. Cake could have done better if Sam was included in the promoting of the movie, and not about me, me, I deserve the Oscar. That was a huge turnoff.

Used to watch her in Friends, that’s about it, and don’t think I’ll ever see her again, other then tabloid stuff. Hard to be mysteries when in tabloids 24/7. Too late for her to get rid of Jen, the x…That’s all people see, and the Friends which is fading anyway. Wish her luck with Justin.

  28. heathermuntean says:

I watched cake two nights ago. Depressing material but I thought she did an excellent job!

  29. heathermuntean says:

But I do still think comedy is her strong suit…

  30. Dawne says:

So I guess she gave up trying to win an Oscar???

  31. Barbara says:

Because of course she is so very ‘motherly’…right

  32. ann says:

She could play tanorexic mom. In We’re the Millers, her orange skin colour was so distracting compared to the rest of the cast.

  33. Hmmm, in these photos, jenn looks like an older version of the Olsen twins.

  34. Jonathan says:

I’ve never been able to watch a full episode of Friends. My flatmate watched an episode every day last year, I hated the whole cast including Aniston.

Then I saw her in We’re The Millers…and I’ve since watched every movie she’s been in and I totally love her…in movies. Fricking adored her in Cake. Still can’t stand her in Friends.
