Lauren Conrad’s clothing line goes under, economy blamed

Lauren Conrad’s overpriced and uninspired clothing line has gone under. Representatives from the line cite the economy, cleverly sugar-coating the news with the promise that Lauren will use more “high-end” fabrics the next time around. Next time around? There really shouldn’t have been a first.

Lauren Conrad’s clothing line is on hiatus until further notice. Los Angeles sources say the MTV reality starlet, who’s wrapping up her last season on “The Hills,” won’t be producing any more seasons of her Lauren Conrad Collection, which launched in fall 2007. Some showrooms got a message from her camp saying, “In light of the economic climate, Lauren has decided to completely rethink her line.” As a result, shipment of the last spring and summer delivery has been canceled, the memo said. Page Six previously reported that the line wasn’t moving in stores like Kitson and Bloomingdale’s. “Lauren is going to revamp her line and design with more high-end fabrics . . . things she couldn’t do the first time around,” a source close to Conrad said. Her rep told us, “With everything going on in the economy and in her life, she wants to rework her line and offerings. She will make announcements soon.”

It’s terrible that so many stores around the country and around the world are having to fold due to the economy. The fashion industry has been particularly hard-hit, with even designers like Vera Wang deciding to cancel runway shows. However, it’s hard for me to feel bad for Lauren’s line. In her world, a jersey and lycra maxi dress that looks like it’s from Target costs $280. If she wanted to revamp her line with the current economic climate in mind, she should just reprice her clothing. Kitson and Bloomingdale’s isn’t moving the merchandise because it’s overpriced and not particularly interesting, which makes sense – the clothes reflect the designer.

It’s not as if this is really going to affect her pocketbook, either. She’s got a novel, LA Candy, coming out, and her check from the next season of The Hills will be substantial. Don’t be surprised if this is the last you hear of her foray into fashion.

Eh… some of the clothes are cute, but I agree with you…way overpriced. She’s not popular and people aren’t going to buy her clothes just because her name is attached. She needs to lower the price point, take her name off the clothes, and definitely improve the clothing value by using decent fabrics. What a joke this girl is.

    Yeesh. Douche wear.

  3. HEB says:

Her clothing line was an insult, she should be ashamed of those crappy dresses.

  4. Frenchie says:

She really should review the length of the dresses / skirts : it’s either too long or too short… none of which is either convinient or classy and figure flattering.
Lauren : design is like everything, it needs study and work to be done

Funny that her rep said Lauren would be “making announcements soon” when its the rep who already made the announcement. What more is Lauren suppose to say?

Sugar coating indeed. Besides, if your over priced designs aren’t selling, making them in fabrics that are even more expensive won’t help much either.

That and she named the clothing line “LeSkanque”

She’s trash I would never buy a pair of socks from this ho.

Novices tend to overprice their things at the beginning. I don’t spend that much on clothing, but I’d rather fork over $300 for a brand that’s been around much longer.

The stuff is so-so.Recession/depression is bad…but I can’t say that I’m annoyed at designers & their retail enablers getting their asses handed to them in these interesting times.150 dollar printed tee shirts that cost 10 dollars to make !?! EVERYONE should have to experience reality sooner or later.

BTW Lauren…If things get a little tight I have a coupla’ HD cams & a studio.I pay same day cash and I’d cut you in on the residuals.

Are there any celebs who DON’T have a clothing line? What a joke.

  12. the original kate says:

i think the reason her clothing line went under is because all the clothes looked like ass.

Funny what happens when pretend TV shows mix with real world economics. I dont have anything personal against the girl but come on. There are so many talented people out there and MTV just covers its eyes and throws and dart and says famous and expects the world to believe them.
Like i said playtime is over… welcome to the real world where you actually have to work.

How is making the clothes with higher end fabrics going to make her brand recession proof? Higher end fabrics mean higher prices.

No matter what fabric she uses it still won’t sell because all of her clothing does look like you can head on down to Target and get it for $20. So she can call it what she wants (did she just admit her clothes won’t sell because cheap fabrics aren’t worth the price?), but no one wants her stuff, no matter how “high end” the fabrics are. Her clothing is boring, unispired and looks cheap.

LC thinks that everyone has multimillion dollar houses, BMW’s, and thousand dollar shoes. She has no idea what real life is like.

  16. Jim says:

…um….am I the only one who finds the whole PR response a little off? If the line is failing due to the economy, how will using “high-end” fabrics the next time around help? If the fabric is more expensive, then the clothing produced from said “high-end” textiles will in turn be more expensive…and with the current state of the economy, aren’t consumers looking to curtail their spending due to a lack of disposable income? They should just come out and say why it really failed, plain, shapeless, downright ugly clothing that wouldn’t sell even at K-Mart Jacklyn Smith Collection prices.

Here’s Lauren statement as reported by Us Mag.

“A few days ago a statement was released to the showrooms that carry my clothing line. It asked them to let the stores know that I was planning to take a couple seasons off from my line so that I could make some changes that I felt were necessary,” she writes.

“As a result, a lot of people were under the impression that my line was being discontinued or had been dropped,” she continues. “This isn’t the case at all. The truth is, I was the one who asked to take a couple seasons off.”

Conrad says she has “learned so much in the past year and I want to apply that to the improvement of my clothing line. I also wanted to make some changes in production so I would be able to lower the price point. That being said, I am actually really excited about beginning this process.”

She has been spending the last couple of weeks working on new designs for the spring, “which is when I am planning to bring the (new and improved) line back.”
