Charlize Theron in Valentino at the Cannes ‘Mad Max’ photocall: cute or awful?

wenn22483103

I’ll never understand why some ladies choose the Cannes Film Festival to go dark and goth with their style. These are photos from the Cannes photocall for Mad Max: Fury Road. Charlize Theron, Tom Hardy (UNF) and Nicholas Hoult were in attendance. Charlize did the photocall in this black, fringed Valentino look which… doesn’t really go with the South of France vibe. I mean, she’s got a model’s figure and look so she can pull off nearly anything. But I was expecting a simple sundress or something light. Maybe I just have a gut-check aversion to anything that combines fringe, lace, leather and a high neck. Seriously though… what the hell is this dress?

As for Tom Hardy… these photos made me think of that old Michael Fassbender photoshoot where Fassy is damp and looking like he would do absolutely filthy things. Maybe that’s just where my mind goes whenever I see Tom Hardy, but does he not look… filthy? Good filthy. Filthy like dirty yacht sex in the South of France. But there’s one thing destroying my fantasy of Tom Hardy yacht sex: his high heels. Those are…bad. Like, Tom Cruise Lifts ™. I guess Tom wanted to look tallish knowing that he was going to have to stand next to Charlize? Still… don’t think about his lifts. Just think about how sexy and blokey he looks.

Meanwhile, did you know that some of those MRAs (men’s rights activists) and misogynists are butthurt about this movie? Apparently, there is some crying and whining over the strength of Charlize’s character and how the film has a feminist message. Shocking.

Despite highlighting those legs, what a horribly unflattering dress.

    • Hudson Girl says:

      Agree, awful dress all around.
Is this a sign of what’s to come from Valentino?! Crap.

    • Kitten says:

Yeah it’s bad enough to make a beautiful woman look fug.

      But Hardeeeeee! yay

    • Sarah says:

It’s hard to make a beauty like Charlize look bad, but this Valentino is both unflattering and inappropriate for the event/locale.

    • Patricia says:

It is unflattering and too short! We get that she loves to show her legs, but that dress looks like a garbage sack, it’s has no definition in the waist, and Charlize needs that because of her broad shoulders and big frame.

  2. genevieve says:

Nobody with a body like that should be made to look so stumpy by her clothes. Awful. It looks like it was meant to be flapper-esque, but somebody forgot to drop the waist. And cut off the sleeves.

  3. Size Does Matter says:

That dress just looks too heavy or something.

And seriously, pocket bloke? I had no idea.

    • Kitten says:

      Yeah he’s a bit of a shortie. He’s listed at 5’9″ so he’s probably 5’7″ or 5’8″.
      I’m 5’4″ though so he’s still good with me…

      • Becks says:

Yes, he is a bit of a shorty. I don’t care, lifts or no lifts, Hardy is The Sex 😍

    • doofus says:

and I also had no idea how tall Hoult is. huh.

      but Hardy looks DELISH.

      • Katenotkatie says:

Hoult: yum. Can you believe that’s the little boy from About A Boy?! That always blows my mind.

      • Lauren says:

A gorgeous cast. I don’t care how tall Hardy is – just want to devour him.
Charlize is a goddess in a horrible dress.
Nick is very handsome -still pissed he cheated on J-Law.

  4. PunkyMomma says:

No to that dress – it looks like a goth lampshade. And Tom’s shoes look as if he’s about to perform Lord of the Dance.

    • mimif says:

      Bahaha you win, PunchyMomma. 😀

    • Kitten says:

LOL…I actually don’t mind his shoes which is strange because I normally have a strong aversion to pointy shoes on men. The lifts are pretty bad though.
I must be blinded by the Blokeness.

      • mimif says:

The points aren’t a problem, did you see the, uh, almost wedge heels happening there?

      • Kitten says:

        I did. It’s bad.

      • Tiffany :) says:

I don’t think it looks great…but at the same time, I feel bad for shorter guys sometimes! I sometimes wear heels because it makes me look about 10 lbs. lighter and lengthens my legs. I feel kind of guilty for applying a double standard to men, that they shouldn’t do the same if they have similar concerns.

If I am honest, it registers as non-attractive to me to see a guy in those shoes. I think the remedy is to get him out of those shoes…and the clothes as well! 😉

    • mia girl says:

      Ha!!! So funny.
Now I’m off to Jib Jab Hardy’s head on a Irish dancing elf.

    • boredblond says:

Goth lampshade! Perfect! But honestly, it’s impossible to ugly up that woman.

  5. InvaderTak says:

How is Nick the tallest? I thought he was kinda short.
Edit: so looked it up and he’s 6’3″! Since when?? He looks so short in other pictures to me. Weird. Also, he and Brandon Flowerpowerhour could be brothers.

And yes, the half arsed goth look sucks. You gotta commit!

    • Abbott says:

I assumed Hoult was shorter, as well. He’s kinda doing it for me in those photos(?!??)

    • LAK says:

Nick is very tall. 6ft 3inches at least.

    • Norman Bates' Mother says:

He always looked very tall too me. I don’t care about his face but his body does it for me. Super tall, lanky, great proportions, long limbs. I thought Hardy is more confident than that. Those lifts look ridiculous.

    • Kitten says:

He was always the tall hot guy on Skins so yeah. I’m surprised anyone would think he was short…

  6. Abbott says:

Tom Hardy’s wedges are Dress Barn tragic.

I read some of the MRA highlights and someone complained there was too much Charlize talking in the trailers. I just… I just need to thanks those brahs for reminding me this movie was coming out. *throws wallet at movie screen*

    • mimif says:

Plesse show up for this post marc, please….

    • Shambles says:

How dare they make a movie that doesn’t demean, objectify, or diminish women? How dare they make a movie with a, GASP, feminist message? Eeeeeeeeevil! But, you know, women don’t need any rights anymore n’ stuff, even though these dudes flip the f*ck out about anything that even slightly empowers a woman.

Nothing makes me punchier than MRAs.

    • PennyLane says:

Yeah, I’m going to see this film in the theater next week – mostly because I just want to, but also because I want to show my financial support for an action film with strong female characters.

How are we still at this point in 2015?

    • Tiffany :) says:

What is ABSURD is the idea that men own action movies and if women are featured, they are treading on their turf.

      Talk about insecurity!

  7. TheOtherMaria says:

    Fugly…..

  8. Loopy says:

Charlize is one of the few actresses who can pull off both kick ass characters and also do sexy roles eg Angelina Jolie,Jennifer Lopez, Halle Berry.

  9. jen2 says:

The dress looks like it is choking her and is heavy. Hardy’s heels are in Cruise lift territory. Is he that small? Hoult wins this one.

  10. Norman Bates' Mother says:

Awful, awful, awful. When I see dresses this ugly, my imagination usually runs wild and this time – add a giant hat with black veil and it would look like a black widow’s dress for her 6th husband’s funeral, custom-made by Marchesa.

    • MIss_Magpie says:

Thank you for giving me a much needed chuckle at my desk, that is quite the burn!

  11. Kiddo says:

    No one looks good here.

  12. Grace says:

At first I thought the NRA was having an issue with this movie. I never heard of the MRA. What the heck is wrong with these dudes? What weenies

  13. Shelley says:

    Meh meh meh

  14. Jegede says:

Can’t wait to see her red carpet.

Apart from Fan Bing Bing I’ve been ‘whlemed’ so far.

    Bring it Charlize

  15. lucy2 says:

She is gorgeous but that dress is tragic.

  16. M.A.F. says:

    1. why do her legs look Photoshop to me in the opening picture?
    2. Let them cry. I’ll go see the movie multiple times if means helping the box office in take be huge.

  17. Ms. Lib says:

Why does she look so old when photographed between those two boys?

  18. Dawn says:

The dress is u.g.l.y but her legs are to die for! She normally dresses with so much class. I hope to never see that dress again.

  19. DavidBowie says:

That’s an awful dress. Oh Charlize. I don’t think Tom is wearing any type of wedge shoes. Those are men’s dress shoes but the way the pants fold make the shoes look a little weird. Nicholas Hoult looks glorious. Sigh.

    MRA can choke on it.

  20. meme says:

Charlize’s dress is so ugly I was convinced it was Dior. She’s so gorgeous; needs to step up her game. HELLO MR. HARDY…the hell with the shoes…you one handsome handsome man and I so would!

  21. FingerBinger says:

I don’t love or hate the dress. My guess is that it’s supposed to be a Mad Max themed dress.

  22. Jag says:

I like that she tried to do something in leather, but the fringe just doesn’t cut it. She needed to commit with the black leather and go bada$$.

This is the first time that I think Hardy looks good – in the close ups. The outfit is a little tight and not tailored well for my taste, and the shoes have to go.

I like the tall drink of water on the right of Charlize, as we look at the photo. Love his eyes.

    • Jan says:

Charlize’s dress does nothing for her. It makes her look thick around the middle and the fringes remind me of Leanne Rimes. Ugh! What was Valentino thinking? But wow, Nicholas Hoult looks great. He’s really grown into his looks. Remember him from About a Boy?

  23. Niisku says:

Yeah, that dress is really ugly, but her face looks pretty as always.

  24. Patricia says:

She’s putting on with and suits her better! I like her with a fuller face (or maybe fillers?) Anyway, IMHO Charlize has a kind of beauty that is very forgettable if it weren’t for her height. Just imagine if she were 5 6’’: suddenly she’s non that of a big deal, she’d be just another pretty face in HW.

Tom Hardy is HOT. I’d like to know what’s his relationship status with wife Charlotte after the pics of him and Leo with some models.

    • Tara says:

I disagree. Her best feature is by far her gorgeous face. That is the face of a movie star from Hollywood’s golden years. Every bit as beautiful as Lana Turner and Kim Novak – and they had better lighting.

  25. Louisa says:

I was going to see and support this movie because of the strong female lead and now I know the MRAs are upset about it, I may see it over and over…. Morons.

  26. Sofia says:

    Tom’s shoes…. I can’t even… I’m going to curl up in a corner and cry. Why Tom’ why?! :/

    • Sofia says:

I just saw another image in a different angle and it’s not really that bad. What a relief! hahaha

  27. Jen says:

TOM’s shoes are FLAT. look harder, people! His pants are laying weird in the photo, that’s not his shoes!!! jesus!

  28. LA Juice says:

Did Valentino die or something… yikes.

  29. belle de jour says:

Awful dress. A showgirl edition Hefty bag with a twist tie round the neck.

  30. serena says:

Holy s**t those are at least a 10 cm heels! Just own it!
By the way I had no idea Nic Hoult was that tall.

  31. Bread and Circuses says:

Oh, MRAs don’t like this movie? SOLD. I will be there opening night. (Actually, I would have anyway. The film looks crazy in a good way.)

As for the lifts, I think the studios probably strongly recommend those for short male actors on the red carpet. Robert Downey Jr. wears lifts on the carpet, for example, but nowhere else. i.e. The lifts may be more a matter of “You are contractually obligated to give good promo, and that means not distracting people with how teeny you look beside Charlize Theron in heels,” rather than vanity.

  32. phlyfiremama says:

So later, in the yellow dress with the side of burnt ham accompanying her, why is SHE in the slightly behind SP pose at HER premiere? Why is he standing in FRONT of her, and not letting her take center stage?

    • Tara says:

They look very in love but I noticed that he seems to like to lead the way. He must be really controlling.

  33. Tara says:

I think Charlize is the most gorgeous woman alive, but that dress is atrocious. Seriously how does her stylist get it wrong when she has a masterpiece to work with?

The MRA are mad because they saw a clip of Furiosa barking an order at Mad Max. Just the fact that there is an MRA is a joke. The movie has a 99% rotten tomatoes rating. The critics say Charlize steals the show. Thank you MRA for giving me yet another reason to go see this.

  34. Me too says:

    Those legs!!!
