Emma Stone in black Oscar de la Renta at a Cannes photocall: adorable or blah?

FFN_Cannes_IrrationalPC_SGP_051515_51741448

Here are some photos from today’s Irrational Man photocall in Cannes. Irrational Man is written and directed by Woody Allen – Woody prefers to promote his films in Europe, so bringing this to Cannes was probably an easy choice for him. The story is about a philosophy professor, played by Joaquin Phoenix, who falls for Emma Stone’s character because… something something Woody Allen. Because she’s Emma Stone and she’s light and happy and most importantly, young.

Emma’s little black dress was Oscar de la Renta. The skirt was too puffy and it was a windy day, so Emma kept holding down the skirt so as to not flash everyone. Much like Charlize Theron’s photocall look yesterday, I don’t get why ladies are going so DARK for Cannes. It’s sunny and light! Wear a sundress! Parker Posey was also at the photocall, looking predictably crazy/chic, bringing some ’80s secretary realness to the proceedings. Apparently, Woody told journalists that he always wanted to work with Parker because he liked her name. That’s pretty much Parker Posey in a nutshell!

I’m not sure why Joaquin Phoenix wasn’t there. Hopefully he’ll make it to the red carpet premiere tonight. I also don’t believe Andrew Garfield will be there – my feeling is still that Andrew and Emma have been over for months.

All I see is gross when you’re standing next to Allen.

I’m glad I’m not the only one.

      + 1

    • Kiddo says:

I don’t know. I’m getting a perverse kick out of the fact that Woody pulled up his pants so high, to reach old man ‘above the navel’ status, that the hems are ready for a flood.
And Parker Poser looks like she’s desperately channeling Lady Gaga, while Emma poses in her first little girl dress-up outfit for daddy, almost doing a curtsey.

ETA: It’s like a flash study on emotional dysfunction in one frame.

Wow – you are spot on.

        Best photo analysis ever

      • Question now says:

        Good analysis.

Perhaps Parker Posey and Emma Stone had some kind of deal: black-white on the photocall.
Then Emma found only this lacy little number or that other dress got stained and Parker decided to wear a hat in order to stop her hair from flying around in a mess and then it looked dysfunctional.

I kind of don’t want to blame actors. Often there is a stylist who is responsible.

      • phlyfiremama says:

        Bingo, Kiddo!!! and Bravo!

    • lucy2 says:

Me too. This is twice now she’s chosen to work with him, after the most recent wave of publicity about him. I don’t understand it.
Beyond that, the dress is cute but a bit dark for Cannes.

      • Original T.C. says:

        Lucy

Emma Stone is working with Woody because she wants an Oscar. Many women who star in his films either get Oscar nominations or wins. The last movie with him got her nothing so she decided to try again. These actresses don’t care if a director is a rapist, a pedophile, or a murder as long as they get an Oscar or some type of recognition from Hollywood. Emma Stone is no different.

@Original TC – Spot on analysis.

But the Roman Polanski one will always be a head scratcher to me

      • lucy2 says:

Oh I know, TC. I just don’t understand it.

      • qwerty says:

        @TC
There are other ways, though. JLaw never dealt with this creep, has she? Plus Emma’s got actual talent, she could’ve gotten there without getting dirty in the process….

    • GoodNamesAllTaken says:

Yeah, child molesters don’t make attractive arm pieces.

    • laughing girl says:

I’m so disappointed ES keeps on choosing to work with Woody Allen – even though why I’m surprised I don’t know. After all they’re all doing it: Cate Blanchett, Hugh Jackman, Colin Firth… urgh, every actor I like and respect is lining up to work with this perv… what is it with actors????

      • dr mantis toboggan says:

Colin Farrell worked with woody Allen as well. There seems to be some disparity with the comments here and on his post.
And I say this as someone who doesn’t like Emma stone and does like Colin Farrell

      • laughing girl says:

        @ dr mantis toboggan

Well, Colin is lucky enough to NOT stand next to Woody Allen. Also their collaboration was a while back (“Cassandra’s Dream” – not sure) – so out of sight, out of mind? But yeah, agree, some people seem to get more crap for working with him than others. He’s a revolting little turd.

      • Kiddo says:

l@aughing girl, before you categorize him as a ‘revolting’ turd, I think you need to call in a consult from mimif. She has the credentials to better identify types of poo.

*Somewhere in her name, there is also “Bubble”.

      • laughing girl says:

        @ Kiddo
I know I shouldn’t be calling him any names – very immature. But this guy really really irks me. Well, he and Roman Polanski.

      • Kiddo says:

No, I don’t care that you called him a name, but mimif is an expert on different types of poo.

  2. QQ says:

I wish it was a different color but that dress it’s pretty exquisite TBH, the windy conditions only highlight the crazy work

    • Tiffany27 says:

Agreed. I actually really, really like the dress.

    • GoodNamesAllTaken says:

Wouldn’t that be fun to wear? It looks so light and beautiful.

    • Jessica says:

Agree, absolutely gorgeous dress. The top half is just ok, but the skirt is divine, amazing detail there.

      • phlyfiremama says:

        Bingo, Kiddo!!! and Bravo!
Grr, sorry my computer is glitching and I meant to post this in reply to a kiddo picture analysis.

  3. savu says:

If I can ever pull off a hat and sunglasses like that I can die a happy woman.

  4. Cindy says:

Gross little old man troll. Can’t see anything else.

  5. Okie says:

It looks like she’s dressed for a different event….

    • lisa2 says:

Yes.. I like that dress.. cute.. but she looks so overdressed next to them. And for most photocalls.

    • jen2 says:

Thank you. It seems a bit much for an afternoon photo call, and not fancy enough for the red carpet. It is more of an evening event cocktail dress. Though she does look cute in it.

  6. INeedANap says:

I’ve lost some respect for Emma Stone as an actress for taking all these Woody Allen movies, especially the ones she’s done as a romantic interest for much older men. Why, girl? He’s just going to drop you when you reach the haggard old age of 28.

  7. Lady D says:

Well, as long as she looks good for the pedophile, that’s all that counts.

  8. bella says:

yeah, grossed out by these pics.
disappointing to see emma with WA even though i knew she was working with him…but seeing her next to him….nauseating…
she looks stunning as usual…no matter what she wears.
    she’s got it all.
and i don’t know why kaiser thinks they’ve been over for months.
weren’t there recent pics of her picking up a package/clothing clearly labeled with garfield’s name?

  9. Patricia says:

It’s a very beautiful dress but I think with all that going on with the skirt it should be more subdued uptop. As it is there is too much going on, and she’s so tiny that the dress ends up wearing her.

Parker is so beautiful and effortless.

  10. celine says:

All I can see is the little gross troll. Ugh to that man.

  11. Chinoiserie says:

She looks a bit like Kristen Stewart in the last picture at least. Has her face gained weight or is this good lighting/photoshop? I think her face looks really pretty here.

  12. Lola says:

I agree embrace color, plus, in the middle of the day the dress looked out of place. I did like Parker P’s look.

  13. Norman Bates' Mother says:

What’s with the black widow chic in Cannes these days? I’d love to see this dress in a nice shade of green or blue – it would be gorgeous. But the black lace will always give a funeral vibe.

  14. MARKWEER says:

I can get past most of this because I always thought that Parker Posey was the coolest. Glad to she is still working..

  15. Pandy says:

She looks like a toilet paper roll-hider …

  16. Misti64 says:

The dress actually looks like a Marchesa

  17. SnarkGirl says:

She looks like a goth cake-topper.

  18. Anne says:

*Personal observation*: My pale legs resemble Emma’s and I’ve always been too self-conscious about them to consider going bare. Hmm.

  19. pk says:

I love the dress and she looks really cute!

  20. phlyfiremama says:

I love the dress but whatever is happening around the bodice is very funky~it doesn’t set right, or something.
