Fashion designer Rachel Roy has filed for divorce from Damon Dash. The two were married in 2005, and soon after Dash backed his new wife’s fashion line. I know that from reading Vogue – Rachel Roy has been profiled in that magazine several times, and she’s a good designer. Her stuff looks like a cross between Kimora Simmons’ Baby Phat and Alice Temperley. Girly and feminine, with an edge.
Anyway, it turns out that Damon Dash is dealing with a lot of financial problems. The Roc-A-Fella co-founder is facing foreclosure on two New York city properties, and he owes millions in taxes. Roy’s divorce filing is for “nonmonetary relief”. Seems like she’s just cutting her losses and hoping that she gets to keep her fashion line. PR Inside has more:
Music mogul Damon Dash has been dealt another legal blow – his wife has handed him divorce papers, according to reports.
Rachel Roy filed a divorce suit in New York’s Manhattan Supreme Court earlier this month (Mar09), signalling the end of her marriage to the Roc-A-Fella Records co-founder, who she married in Mexico in January 2005.
And it seems Roy, who launched her own women’s fashion line with her husband’s backing, is aware of the hip-hop executive’s financial woes as the divorce is for “nonmonetary relief”, according to an electronic record of the case obtained by the New York Daily News.
The publication reports that Dash is facing foreclosure on his two Tribeca, New York properties and owes $2 million (£1.4 million) in state taxes.
A judge also ordered Manhattan officials to seize his car last year (08) after he failed to make his monthly payments.
And Dash’s troubles don’t end there – he is also being sued by various law firms and landlords over allegedly unpaid bills.

The couple have no children, so hopefully the divorce will be quick and quiet. I wonder about Dash’s finances, though. Roc-A-Fella was supposed to have made Dash a millionaire more than a hundred times over.
Do you think he just made really bad investments? Or did he get caught up in the same financial tsunami that has struck down so many rich people? Even though I think it’s a little cheap for Rachel Roy to leave Damon when he’s got so many other problems to deal with, I can understand how she would just want to cut her losses and move on.

As his former partner would say…”I got 99 Problems but a Bitch Ain’t 1″. Yeah, he’ll miss her(maybe) but there are plenty of other woman willing to take her place. Dame’s a survivor and he’ll bounce back, eventually.
This is yet another story that makes me (in part) ashamed to be a woman. Will these men NEVER learn? What type of person leaves their partner in the dust as soon as they hit a bump in the road? This is just another sad story of children being born into a marriage of convienience; she was beautiful, and he was rich.

Like I said on my own blog, it is an unwritten rule that the trophy chick will turn like bad milk as soon as the money pit is empty. Dame should have known…she don’t look like the type to work two jobs to keep the family afloat like most women find themselves doing in this recession.

Whoa, has anyone considered the fact that she may be filing for divorce for the sole purpose of retaining some of the assets for both of them? Otherwise, her clothing line and anything in her name can be attached, depending on their state of residence, to his financial losses. If he is on anything of hers, even if she didn’t secure the debt, they will attempt to file liens against her property, seize assets, go after her cash, etc… Depending on who they owe money, many creditors seize first, ask questions and sort out who owns what later. This article doesn’t state anything about difficulties or public statements, just that she filed. They may have done this as a joint decision to protect enough assets that their children can have a roof over their heads. There have been several couples who “divorced” legally due to one partner’s financial difficulties without considering themselves “single”. So before everyone starts completely destroying her, consider that we do not have any of the fact beyond she filed for divorce.
Well said JB! I get so sick of how so many people on this site are all so happy to pass judgment on the lives, and misfortunes of others. Everyone loves to think the worse about others in order to make themselves feel better about their own terrible, boring lives.

I don’t think she was a trophy wife. She stood by him during the whole Aliyah thing and they have two children together. She has her own line before they were wed, I remember hearing she was into fashion before they became a couple again. So clearly, we don’t know what happened in their relationship but I won’t go as far as to degrade this woman.
But Imara, it seems strange that she leaves him when he has become a pauper that’s all. It just looks really bad on her part.

What whole aaliyah thing? she died in 01, he’s been married to Rachel for 5 yrs. I really doubt she had to get him through anything at that point.
Plus their marriage has been on the rocks for a while now, n there are reports that she has moved on. So I really don’t think she’s doing this to save his ass. But I’d love to be proved wrong, i’ve always kinda dugg dame.
Totally agree with JB. That was my first thought. It just seems suspicious that she’s asking for nonmonetary relief. I bet this was a decision made by both of them so that they could save some of the assets.
Well she did marry him for his money so it makes sense that she should leave him when he’s set to loose it

They had a relationship and had a daughter in 1999, then he moved on to Aaliyah(2001)and then after her unfortunate death Rachel got back together with him, married him in 2005 and had another child in 2008.
I saw her on Oprah and read some articles about her(fashionline). I don’t know her but she seemed intelligent & kind, Dame Dash on the other hand always acts like a bad version of P Diddy and Kanye West combined in one ??? A Narcist with a capital N !!!
One of the first things he said when Aaliyah died(on the phone with MTV TRL) was that he never laid his hands on her in a violent way ? Why would you say something like that when your girlfriend just died in a terrible plane accident ???
On MTV Cribs he claimed that he loved money just as much as he did love Aaliyah ???
