Sonam Kapoor in major Elie Saab: the best or the worst of Cannes?

wenn22502626

The Cannes Film Festival’s glamour has quieted down a little bit, which always happens once the first four or five days have passed. I’m hoping for a late surge for Michael Fassbender and Marion Cotillard’s Macbeth though. Anyway, here are some photos from yesterday’s Cannes activities, mostly the big premiere for Pixar’s Inside Out.

Everyone is discussing Sonam Kapoor MAJOR Elie Saab Spring 2015 gown. See, to me this is just bad, but people are dissecting why it’s high drama or whatever. It reminds me of Li Bingbing’s Marchesa last week – if you’re going to do a big, look-at-me gown, why do it in such a questionable color? Plus, the over-reliance on feathers makes her look like a Muppet. All that being said, I love how many Indian ladies are doing the Cannes red carpet this year. It’s amazing.

Uma Thurman in Prada at last night’s Chopard gala. Her face has gone back to normal, right? I think she just overdid the fillers and had terrible makeup back in February.

Melanie Laurent in Zuhair Murad Couture. Quite honestly, this is one of my favorite looks of Cannes so far. I love this. But I love a good sleeve.

Oh, Paris Hilton. Why are you in Cannes?

Amy Poehler in Stella McCartney and Mindy Kaling in Salvador Pérez. UGH, I’m so disappointed! This was Mindy’s first Cannes and this is what she chose? Amy looks pretty with dark hair though.

    And Phyllis from the office:)
Paris and her purses, omg when will she stop.

    • Dolce crema says:

      Love Phyllis!

    • belle de jour says:

That hideous, inappropriate purse is all I could see of her fit. Answers the question of who would carry a teen cosmetic bag from Claire’s to Cannes?

  2. Norman Bates' Mother says:

She looks like Cruella De Vil of Muppets. I wanted to use that phrase and one day later – bam, such a wonderful opportunity. 😉 But it really looks like a dozen of Muppets had to die to make this dress. Melanie Laurent’s dress is very pretty but boring. It would look much better in a different, not pale or pastel color.

  3. Tristan says:

Paris Hilton is looking really good at the moment & her whole look is great. She looks very elegant. The Big Bird outfit is awful, but Sonam Kapoor is really beautiful

  4. kri says:

Amy and Melanie look amazing. Sonam…well, she could be the newest Empire castmate. “Dandy Lyon” or something. Horrible dress. Makes my allergies want to act up.

  5. littlemissnaughty says:

Lord gawd that woman is beautiful. Love her makeup too. The dress …. I can’t stop looking at her face.

Uma Thurman has never been my cup of tea to be honest (as an actress) and the dress looks like the designer couldn’t decide on a color so he went with no color at all. That’s not a color, right?

    Melanie Laurent is perfection, always.

    • nikki says:

Who? Sonam? NO. I’m indian and I can promise you we have more beautiful women

      • ela says:

Same thing, you hear in nearly every Freida Pinto post. I really wish India does a poll, select their most beautiful woman of all eternity and forbid any other Indian woman from ever being praised again.

I am of Indian descent, I just think it is awesome even the supposedly average Indian woman is seen as beautiful.

      • nikki says:

Maybe you’re right. To each their own, I suppose. She just doesn’t do it for me, though.

      • littlemissnaughty says:

Calm down, I have two colleagues from India, both very gorgeous women. Happy now? Yeesh, you can’t even say something nice anymore. I think she’s beautiful, deal with it. It doesn’t take anything away from other women’s beauty.

      • oneshot says:

she ticks all the boxes for being considered a beauty in India – sharp features, big eyes, and (crucial point here) fair skin. Not being fair-skinned is generally what gets Freida Pinto dissed so hard, and that’s not even the case here.

I’m Indian too, and yes there are women who are way more attractive than her but you have to be kidding if you think Sonam Kapoor would be considered unattractive in India by anyone’s standards.

  6. meme says:

The best thing I can say about Ms. Kapoor’s gown is it’s not a dress that would ever been worn by BeYAWNce, JLo or Kim Kartrashian. This is a good thing. Elie Saab just keeps making the same dress over and over.

    Melanie Laurent looks stunning…and effortless

  7. Belle Epoch says:

That is one freaking ugly dress. It’s like Scarlett O’Hara cut up bathroom rugs to make it.

  8. Jessica says:

I love the skirt, but hate the feathers around the bust.

I actually like Mindy’s outfit, but it would have looked so much better without the little sequin detailing at the hems. Still, it’s cute and fun which seems ideal for promoting a Pixar film.

    • poppy says:

ITA the top is too much and overwhelms her.
      the bottom is enough drama.

      • belle de jour says:

Yes! That skirt could have worked, but the cut on the neckline – even if you deleted the dollar store feather dusters – was curved in the wrong way to frame the bodice or feature her interesting face.

      • GoodNamesAllTaken says:

Me, too, it’s almost cute but the top just hides her body too much.

    • sills says:

Yes, I want to love it cause it’s so audacious, but all I see is a ginormous lampshade with a head on top.

  9. Livealot says:

It’s almost the blue/black white/gold thing. The dress looks like a light sea green in one of the photos and a harsher green in another. At first glance its horrendous, but the light sea green color makes it not as bad. More whimsical.

  10. Tifygodess24 says:

Oh my that dress. 😳 I normally love me some Elie Saab but this is just bad. It’s like she’s a fancy swamp creature. Just no. And while I do love the colors of Mindys dress(?-crop top/skirt) it’s not the most flattering outfit.
Oh Paris. She would go to the opening of an envelope. So are we really surprised?

  11. Amy says:

I LOVE Mindy’s dress! Nice bright colors and just a hint of sparkle without going overboard.

  12. InvaderTak says:

One flew in to the cuckoo’s nest and tried to call it couture. Bad color too.

  13. hellena says:

I would really welcome it if you could stop calling Fan Bingbing Li Bingbing! 😉

  14. Skalula7 says:

From my extensive research (googling over coffee) it seems Li and Fan Bingbing are not the same person. I have not heard of either, just noticed the names. Unless I am misreading, this article seems to be mixing up the two?

    • Linn says:

Yes, it seems the article is mixing up the two Bingbing’s, they were both in Cannes, but the link says Li Bingbing but lead’s to a picture of Fan Bingbing.

They are both more known in China, but have been in some international movies as well. e.g. Li was in Transformers 4 while Fan portrayed Blink in X-Men: Days of Future Past.

Bingbing is their first name btw. in case somebody wondered if the two are related.

  15. Skalula7 says:

Oh, I think Helena beat me to it.

  16. jen2 says:

How many birds have had to die for these feather laden dresses this year at Cannes? (Know they are fake, but still). Just can’t get with this trend. Not an attractive color either. Melanie Laurent looks pretty.

  17. Kitten says:

I LOVE Melanie Laurent. Wish we saw more of her.

  18. oneshot says:

Judging by the number of potshots she likes to take at her colleagues (slut shaming Deepika Padukone for showing some cleavage in a movie costume, for starters), Sonam Kapoor is a real piece of work, and an immature one at that. That said, she probably deserved better than a dress and lipstick in colours that wash her out – that purply pink shade is a friend to NO South Asian woman!

Kaiser, you’ve given us shots of the Indian and Chinese ladies at Cannes this year, but how about any pics at all of the Koreans? I know there’s a handful but we haven’t even seen a pic of Jun Ji Hyun/Gianna Jun, who is pretty much the Angelina Jolie of Korea. Or Go Ah Sung.

    • Ahot says:

Somewhere in the world, trust that there will always be a Deepika Stan TRYING to make her happen on a Sonam Kapoor post, lol. Forever insecure… & always inacurate! 🙂

& Yes, i would have loved to see the korean ladies, I guess they didn´t make big enough of a splash. Hopefully next year they will shine big time.

      • oneshot says:

I’m not a Deepika stan and don’t consider her a particularly good actress, do I have to be her stan to consider slut shaming a colleague (based on Sonam Kapoor’s own twitter ie straight from the horse’s mouth) to be screwed up and wrong? Sonam Kapoor is pushing 30, that’s a little too old to be excused as youthful immaturity a la Taylor Swift.

Jun Ji Hyun’s face alone would have been worth the post, honestly I’d rather see pics of ladies from other film industries who are recognised as good actresses (see Jun in You From Another Star for just what she can do, or Go in her tv show Heard It Through the Grapevine) than some B-list model in a boring sparkly Suhair Murad gown again.

  19. OhDear says:

Kapoor’s dress would be ok if it were a different color (personal thing) and didn’t have that feather thing on the bust.

    Paris Hilton – why?

  20. Micki says:

    I don’t like a single dress here. Repetitive, boring, ill-fitting …

  21. Jayna says:

Melanie’s gown on her is to die for.

Poor Paris. She’s been a nobody for years now. Last attempt at a reality show and it was cancelled. She has to go overseas for a career. But lately her PR peopld have been pushing her on the gossip pages, for example, of DailyMail as far as “sightings” a lot, trying to make her happen again. It is over. Give it up, Paris You aren’t the “it” reality girl anymore.

Her face looks like it’s hitting the wall even though she’s only 34. Something is off.

    • Nanea says:

If Paris were happening, she’d be on the red carpet instead of standing on a doormat.

Years and years ago she somehow still managed to be on a red carpet, if not actually inside the premieres and the official parties afterwards.

  22. Miran says:

That dress is terrible, she looks like she should be popping out of a trash can like Oscar the Grouch.

  23. Bread and Circuses says:

I love the shiny black dress on the lady standing beside Amy Poeler in that last shot. It looks great on her!

  24. taxi says:

Yikes. 2 horrible dresses on the same woman in 2 days! Never heard of Ms Kapur but she wins for worst clothes.
