Cannes: Aishwarya Rai’s magnificent face made everything else obsolete

wenn22506911

Here are even more endless Cannes fashion photos! YAY! These are some assorted photos from a few different events on Monday and Tuesday. Let’s start with Aishwarya Rai in Oscar de la Renta at a yacht photocall for her first film in five years, Jazbaa. I was complaining about Rai’s earlier looks this week, but this is much more on-target for her. Love the rich red-burgundy on her. And that face! God, that face. Two years ago, Rai was heavily criticized for not losing her pregnancy weight fast enough for some people. I hope Rai tells them all to kiss her ass.

Natalie Portman in this Lanvin gown. As I said with both Lupita Nyong’o and Poppy Delevingne, I’m really enjoying the green gowns at Cannes this year. Only a few ladies are doing green, and when they do, it really pops. This Lanvin might be my favorite look on Natalie for the entire film festival – it’s slouchy and it had the soul of a sack dress, but it manages to look lux and sophisticated too. Plus, it has pockets!

Daria Strokous… I have no idea who she is, but she wore this Luisa Beccaria gown which is pretty much a copy of a Dior gown from 12 years ago (that every other designer copied six years ago). Pretty color though.

Sienna Miller, Rachel Weisz and Melanie Laurent at the Calvin Klein-Cannes event on Monday. They all wore CK and I think Rachel is my favorite, but I do love Melanie’s dress too. Why do all of these women look like they just woke up from a nap though?

Wow, that red dress is the perfect color for her- it makes her gorgeous face just pop even more.
Natalie’s is pretty too, mostly for the color.

    • BangersandMash says:

The Empress Miss Rai killed it!!!! Just killed it!!

and scrolling down to Natalie I gasped a little and thought, “Oh my G!!! she’s soooo skinny, whats up?” but the dress looks good on her.

    • Tiffany :) says:

It really is the perfect backdrop for that amazing face! Seriously, she is one of the greatest beauties of all time. Just stunning.

    • ISO says:

I’m from Colorado, I don’t wear deodorant. (pre-empt to every comment) Natalie Portman reminds me of the mountain girls around here who don’t know what’s happening unless they are wearing Patagonia. She looks so sexless and gaunt, but not elegant slinky at all, just stiff and uncomfortable.

  2. LetItB! says:

    Aishwarya is breathtaking!

    • MrsBPitt says:

      agreed….she is gorgeous!

    • David says:

      Stunning.

    • GoodNamesAllTaken says:

      Young Elizabeth Taylor eyes. Beautiful.

      • GingerCrunch says:

        I saw young Bette Davis!!!

      • Shambles says:

I would pay her just to look at me, so that whatever magic is in those eyes might rub off on me a little bit. She’s heart-stopping.

      • Mrs.Krabapple says:

Her eyes are the wrong color, but I get a Rita Hayworth vibe from her.

    • TheEntrepreneursWife says:

Am I the only one who thinks that next to Aishwarya Rai, who is breathtaking, the other women look sickly?

      • Mar says:

Yes when I scrolled to Natalie that’s exactly what I thought. She looks sickly.

      • tracking says:

You are not the only one.

      • Astrid says:

count me in. Aishwarya looks fab and the rest thin and tired

      • Joy says:

Not only that but, her level of pretty is just so much higher than theirs, they just look pedestrian in comparison.

      • TheEntrepreneursWife says:

Excellent, thanks. So it’s not just my eyes. The contrast is astounding.

I just cannot believe that many women aspire to look like these skeletons when we have Rai who is glorious and sexy as hell.

      • kibbles says:

Totally can see the difference. I realize that some women are naturally thin, but let’s be real, the majority of women in Hollywood starve themselves to look like that and to me it isn’t attractive. Aishwarya Rai is gorgeous and was still more gorgeous than the rest even with the baby weight. I would rather look curvy over emaciated any day.

      • dreselse says:

Aishwarya looks great. Those other women pale in comparassion to her. No one holds a candle to her beauty in terms of Hollywood or Bollywood celebs I think.

      • Susie 1 of 3 says:

I’ve never seen her before, but she is gorgeous in this picture. Glowing, healthy, fabulous! So tired of the emaciated young boy look. She is a real beauty.

      • Dante says:

Agreed. I thought she looked stunning and then as I scrolled down I just got sad. She looks vibrant and they look drained.

      • Mrs.Krabapple says:

The others do seem to have that receding hairline that people get when they starve themselves (from nutrition deficiency). Although I read Portman is a vegan, so maybe with her it’s not so much starving/purging as simply not eating a good enough variety of foods.

      • bluhare says:

No you aren’t. She’s drop dead gorgeous.

      • RTMS says:

Even Rachel looks bad and that’s rare for her. Sienna is the worst.

    • khaveman says:

Wow – she hit the genetic jackpot. She is breathtaking.

    • Asiyah says:

      She is absolutely stunning!

    • Grace says:

She is amazingly beautiful. Her face is stunning.

    • BooBooLaRue says:

      heartbreakingly beautiful!

  3. Bishg says:

Lovin’all of them except Mélanie and Natalie.
Aishwarya is simply stunning. I am having a girl-boner while admiring her perfect face.

  4. De says:

Is it just me, or is the lighting terrible on the last three photos? The shadows from their hair looks like bruises.

  5. delphi says:

I want Natalie’s dress. That is “my green” (yes, I’m calling dibs *evil laugh*). It reminds me of a black Halston dress of my mom’s from the 70s and I love it.

    • belle de jour says:

Yes! I thought perhaps vintage Halston, too, until I read more. Exactly the sort of thing that Bianca Jagger could have worn the hell out of & been effortlessly casual-sexy-chic.

  6. Ethelreda says:

Aishwarya is gorgeous – the dress is perfect on her even if maybe a bit ott for an afternoon photocall. However, in close up pics I saw of her, her make-up looked almost clownish, but I suppose that’s often the case with these red carpet pics – you’re supposed to view them from a distance, not up close.

Natalie’s dress is proof of what I said the other day – these deep v-necks are NEVER flattering. When busty Selma Hayek wore one, it looked tacky. When flat chested Lupita wore one, all we could see was bones. Same with Natalie. These necklines are unflattering to almost any body type. Can this trend end, please?

    • sills says:

I feel you on this, but I think it can be done, if you have a chest in the “sweet spot”–small, pert boobs but not too bony. Like if you image search Dakota Johnson at the Berlin Film Festival, I think she pulls it off. But more often than not it is a disaster.

Edit: I have to eat my words a little cause now I’ve seen her London premiere photo in the white V-plunge and it looks a little saggy, even with her perky boobs. Yeah, this deep V mostly looks not good.

      • LAK says:

I think Poppy Delevigne has the perfect balance of your description. She was on the Cannes red carpet a couple of days ago in a deep V neck and looked marvelous showing that much chest.

    • Lori says:

I’m ready for the see thru dresses with Grannie Panties underneath to stop. I am so tired of that look.

    • Ange says:

I agree, her face looks painted on and it did in the previous set of photos too. She’s a naturally gorgeous woman and I just think the makeup is too heavy handed, it’s ageing.

  7. Eleonor says:

Aishwarya dress reminds me of Amal’s dress at the Met gala. But Aishwarya is a Goddess.

  8. serena says:

Updating girl crush: Aishwarya Rai is a goddess, period.

    • norah says:

when she didnt lose baby weight fast enough – it was all headline news in the papers there in india saying that she had let the country down can u imagine! so glad that she made such a dramatic entry

  9. MrsBPitt says:

Dear Natalie, FFS, please use a hair and makeup stylists…from the neck up, you look like you are going to the grocery store! Also, wouldn’t Anglina Jolie love Natalie’s dress, if it was in black, of course!

    Rachel looks okay…

Sienna Miller looks HORRIBLE….hair is bad, dress, just looks wierd on her! And that facial expression!!!! She looks like she may have had some work done or some botox and her face is stuck like that!!!!!

  10. serena says:

I love Natalie Portman’s dress but I really find her hair awful. She needs a longer, waved cut, not the short attached-to-her-head type. Enough!

The other 3 were kind of meh.

  11. blue marie says:

    Wow, she is beautiful

  12. Jessica says:

Huh, I actually like every dress here. Even the toilet roll cover gown isn’t as bad as most versions of them.

Natalie should dress like that more often, she has the figure and the face to pull of those glamorous slightly 20’s inspired looks.

Aishwarya is so goddamn beautiful. That third pic…Wow!

  13. INeedANap says:

I am not loving the dress on Queen Rai, but there is no fighting that FACE. I don’t even know what else was in this post.

  14. InvaderTak says:

    Soooo much 90’s!

  15. susanne says:

The Lanvin on Natalie is stunning. I agree completely that it could have looked too drapey and sack-y on someone else. The plunging neckline works on a woman who is slender and not too busty- it causes me pain when too-thin women use it to show off their bones.
Natalie looks healthy, and look at that styling- dark and sultry but clean and simple. Let the dress do its thing. Best she’s looked. Love her when she’s not saying stuff.

  16. Jayna says:

The most stunning look bar none. That face, that hair, those eyes, those lips, pale skin and that stunning color made all of her beauty just pop. Loved the gown on her. All others pale in comparison to her that have been on the red carpet during Cannes.

  17. Virgilia Coriolanus says:

Melanie and Rachel Weisz are the standouts, except/after Aishwarya…..although I don’t like her dress, but that FACE! That pose!

  18. Jayna says:

    Rachel looks amazing.

Natalie is beyond tragic in this ensemble.

  19. TOPgirl says:

Wow she looks gorgeous! I mean drop dead hot gorgeous! Her face is true perfection and her body looks great!

    • tigerlily says:

Agree. Aish looks amazing. She is a goddess and makes the others looks shabby. Especially Natalie in that pathetic sack dress which is not flattering cut for her

    • Mispronounced Name Dropper says:

She has a lot of makeup on. So technically it’s not her real face.

      • Veronica says:

So does everybody else on that red carpet, though. She just has striking features. It’s not often that you find people with such bright eyes set against that hair and skin.

      • Naddie says:

You’re actually right. The color of her skin and eyes are fake. *sigh* Of course she’s still gorgeous without it, but suddenly the other actresses don’t look so bland next to her.

      • oneshot says:

@Naddie – Aishwarya Rai’s eye colour is naturally grey-green, not fake at all. There are pictures of her dating back to early childhood if you want receipts.

Her skin here, though, that is the result of bad foundation application though she’s naturally quite fair (saw her in person with hardly any makeup on, she is freaking gorgeous).

      • Belinda B. says:

I agree she looks stunning but I think we need to be honest, Mother Nature and plastic surgeons collaborated here! 🙂

      • oneshot says:

@Belinda B – nope, she was born that way and there are receipts in the form of photographs all the way from her days as a teenage model in the late 80s/early 90s. At most, she’s had a few fillers, if any.

        I know, it’s unfair.

  20. Mispronounced Name Dropper says:

    Meh. She’s alright, I guess.

  21. Sea Dragon says:

I think Natalie’s dress is either too long or just too big for her frame + she went with a neutral palette to emphasize her eyes= not so hot.
Sienna looks very pretty and shiny but the angle of her body in this shot makes her proportions look wonky.
    Rachel looks beautiful as always.

Most importantly, Aishwarya’s face would make any man weak in the knees. She’s a joy to behold.

    • sills says:

I agree, if she had just cinched the belt a bit higher or if the top were more fitted, it would’ve looked great. As is it seems to streeeeeeetch her out funhouse mirror style.

  22. Naddie says:

Hypnotizing eyes. And she’s 41? Wow. If I were in that event, I wouldn’t want to be next to her, cause she makes everyone fades.

  23. Kip says:

Is Aishwarya wearing contacts? I thought she had green eyes but they look blue in these photos. Also they managed to make the ever gorgeous Rachael Weisz look like she’s standing in a TJ Maxx dressing room in that saggy magenta dress! Is it not tailored at all!? Does that kind of neckline look good on anyone ever?

    • oneshot says:

her eyes are naturally grey-green (more grey or green depending on the light/mood) but have been known to look a wee bit blue sometimes.

They look grey to me here, and sure she could be wearing contacts but that would be redundant when her natural eye colour is what made her famous in the first place.

  24. Veronica says:

How many virgins do I have to sacrifice to look like Rai? Because they may be hard to find these days, but I’ll do it.

I loved Portman’s dress. Perfect slouchy chic. It gives me petite cleave envy. 🙁 Us busty, curvy ladies could never get away with that look.

(As for the “nap” hair…everyone looks a tad sweaty, so maybe it was muggy out? I know my hair doesn’t survive the frizz in that weather.)

    • Lucky Charm says:

You may have better luck finding “born again virgins” than actual virgins. 🙂

  25. philip says:

Ashwarioya looks good but she is wearing pale make up on her whole body..and this looks 5 shades lighter than her real skin color although that wouldnt be as dark as many other indians but if you know about skin color issues in those regions you may understand why its an issue.
Now her eye color is also green but the cor here is the result of contacts. Her real color is dark green that looks brown in photos.you can check her last year in white gown at cannes.
I love her in her real skin she is much more attractive that way but her making herself so white disappoints me.

    • Joy says:

To play devil’s advocate, she is getting hit by a million flash bulbs. I am naturally pale, but even one flash makes me look supernatural, so I could be that.

    • Veronica says:

I think that’s probably lighting. She’s always been on the medium-light side of the Indian skin spectrum, so the flashbulbs are probably making her look even paler. I have very fair skin, and in flash photography, I can look downright ghostly.

    • oneshot says:

her real eye colour is greyish-green, it can vary depending on the light etc even without photoshop.

  26. Josefa says:

Aishwarya Rai is, simply put, one of the most beautiful women in the world. I’m just in awe whenever I see that face.

  27. FingerBinger says:

Aishwarya is beautiful but I hate that dress.

    • MaximwduCamp says:

I tend to agree. I think that the gorgeous color and how great it looks with skin tone and hair deflects the actual 80s prom/bridesmaid ugliness of the dress.

  28. kri says:

    Aishwarya, Melanie and Rachel…sigh. Amazing.

  29. Ana says:

Stunningly beautiful woman and I love her dress, everybody else looks so dull and plain by comparison.

  30. Dragonlady Sakura says:

Wow, Aishwarya is ridiculously gorgeous. I’m glad she took her time losing her baby weight and to hell with the haters.

  31. poppy says:

aishwarya is beautiful but IMO she’s wearing way too much makeup. it looks thick and heavy and unnecessary.

  32. Tough Cookie says:

Aishwarya Rai is beautiful but I don’t like the skirt of her dress….it looks like there are Post-It notes hanging from it. Love the color, though.

  33. belle de jour says:

I’ve always appreciated Calvin Klein’s aesthetic, color palette, cut and take on elegance in the American fashion industry, but all three of these leave me cold; they’re so flat and sad, and somehow simultaneously try-hard and boring. It looks as though the stylists just gave up here, too.

  34. Blip says:

Time for some serious Aishwarya action:
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7dboayEP_b4

I swear if I ever saw this woman in real life my heart would skip a beat. No joke.

  35. Tara says:

Those eyes! She has the most beautiful pair of eyes. Just mesmerizing.

  36. maggie says:

Nope! She’s pretty but I find Rachel to be much prettier.

  37. EN says:

I kept thinking – who she reminds me of? Finally got it -Rachel Weintz. Strange, given that ethnically they are so different, so I had to really rake my brains for it.
The blue eyes I presume are contacts? I think I’ve seen pictures of her with green eyes as well.

  38. Isabelle says:

As a straight female, this woman would make my head spin if she walked into a room. She is gorgeous.
