Guess who won last night’s Dancing with The Stars (spoilers)

After a lot of hard work, self improvement and soul-baring, Rumer Willis, 26, and her partner Val Chmerkovskiy took home the mirror ball trophy this season. They beat out fellow finalists Riker Lynch, 23, a singer and performer on Glee, and Noah Galloway, 33, an Iraqi war vet and Purple Heart recipient who lost his left arm and left leg in combat. Rumer performed incredibly this season, wowing judges and viewers with her technical skill and emotional breadth. In one of her final performances, Rumer and Val earned perfect 10s from the judges across the board, causing her dad Bruce Willis to tear up. Here’s more on her win:

Season 20 of Dancing With the Stars has been one of the most competitive — and least predictable! — in DWTS history. There were injuries, tears, and one marriage proposal. An Olympic gymnast missed the finals by a hair. An Army vet with missing limbs made the final three. At various points in the season, all three remaining couples — Rumer Willis and Val Chmerkovskiy, Riker Lynch and Allison Holker, and Noah Galloway and Sharna Burgess — brought the judges to tears.

But Tuesday’s finale show was about more than just the winners. Riker and Allison were chosen by the judges to give an encore performance of their freestyle routine from last night, and former contestants from both this and prior seasons (including fan favorites Amy Purdy, Alfonso Ribeiro, and Sadie Robertson) hit the dance floor.

Castoff contestant Patti LaBelle showed off her impressive pipes, while Derek Hough (apparently recovered from his injury) and his sister, judge Julianne Hough, danced together while Sia belted out her hit song, “Elastic Heart.”

After as much fanfare as time would allow, finally, host Tom Bergeron announced which couple would take home the golden Mirroball, and the bragging rights that come with it. While the race was close — especially between Team Willis and Team Lynch, who wound up the final pair — ultimately, it was Rumer and Val who took the top prize.

It seems like whenever I tell an older person what I do for a living, they ask me if I cover or watch Dancing With The Stars. It’s not my thing, but my mom watches it so I called her for comment. She said that Rumer improved so much this season and that she “kind of exposed herself, in the skimpy outfits but also emotionally,” which helped add to her appeal. My mom found Rumer’s story genuine and heartfelt. She pointed out that Val has been in the finals two other times, but unlike his older brother, Maksim, he’s never won DWTS so it may have been his time. My mom also said that the second place finisher, Riker, was really good.

I asked my mom if she thought Rumer’s status as a celebrity daughter helped her win and she said “her father and mother were there every time, and her father was crying the day before the votes would come in, of course that affects viewers.” Rumer earned this on her own, she busted her butt and danced like a champ, but it didn’t hurt that Bruce and Demi were there rooting for her, to their credit. Rumer’s whole family was very supportive. Congratulations to Rumer and Val!

Here’s Rumer and Val’s Freestyle from the finals. In the accompanying music she’s actually singing “Toxic” and Val is playing the violin.

And here’s the announcement of the winners.

I went to my mom’s house for a couple of days, and I ended up watching Monday and Tuesday’s finale episodes. I’m really glad Rumer and Val won. From what I’ve seen, she has made a caterpillar to butterfly transformation as far as her self esteem, and her dancing really is breathtaking. Graceful, heartfelt and beautiful. Plus her partner Val has been on the show for several seasons, and this is his first win. All around, I think everyone deserves this. Also, Rumer’s body is INSANE.

I can’t believe I’m going to admit this, but I love that song, it’s a total guilty pleasure. She did a helluva job singing it too.

      • Shambles says:

Right? She sounds fantastic. I was blown away by her voice, and then to dance like that to her own music. She’s extremely talented in her own right. I think the fact that Val did the guitar with her is really cool, too. They definitely have some chemistry there.

      • Senaber says:

That version of the song is the jam. Val plays violin to accompany as well. I shamelessly love DWTS. It’s a very entertaining show. Tom Bergeron is a gem of a host and I love the creativity in the choreography and costuming.

    • Size Does Matter says:

I don’t watch the show, but from what I have seen, Rumer worked her booty off this season. I was afraid to click on the link because I didn’t want to know if someone else won.

    • Kitten says:

Her body is incredible and she looks really gorgeous in these pics. I don’t give a f*ck about this show, but I heard from my aunt that Rumer was amazing. I’m happy for her.

    • Liberty says:

Shambles I agree! I was also at my mom’s and watched it , never do. And Rumer was amazing. So I checked out her past weeks’ performances online, fantastic too. Almost pro quality. She and Val totally deserved to win and I actually even watched Mon and last night, haha.

mimif – her song! yes, gorgeous. This is like some movie about the caterpillar turning into a butterfly before our eyes. Really glad for her. Esp as she seemed truly grateful and genuine and humbled and hardworking, No attitude.

I was talking about it w our interns at work, all were cheering for her too and one pointed out that though you could say yeah, she has famous parents in the audience, you have to be aware of the huge Glee and Disney push for RIker from the preteen and teen base. (The interns found him too “pose-y and relying on like two moves” in their words.) So if she beat that, and adding that I think she showed a lot more dance growth and versatility than he did though he was good, she and Val should be proud of her victory. I also was impressed by the solider, who worked hard and did show skills.
OK CANNOT BELIEVE I JUST WROTE ABOUT THIS PASSIONATELY, AND KNEW ABOUT IT, lol. Ten days ago I knew nothing! wow. thanks, mom!

Not sure why but I am so happy for her. Nice to see her family support her!

  3. Nola says:

The top three were all great. Each had an amazing journey and memorable dances. However, Ryker had legit ballroom dancing skills and competed with several of the pros when they were younger so you know.

Rumor took me by surprise. I was impressed with her willings to work hard. I half expected her to throw fits when things became too much but she always pushed forward. I hope this opens more doors for her. Side note-Rumor’s body is amazing.
I’m happy Val won. He and Zendaya were robbed during their season.

I don’t typically watch the show. I have watched a few of her DWTS vids though and she is a very very good dancer. Just beautiful. I would have thought she had received some training along the way and wonder if she’s ever actually thought about pursuing it. Very happy for them that they won. That freestyle piece is fantastic too!

  5. Jen says:

    He plays violin, not guitar

  6. meme says:

Why does she have to wear half naked outfits?

    • swack says:

Have you ever watched “Dance Moms” (my guilty pleasure because I like seeing the dancing)? The costumes those young girls wear sometimes are worse than what Rumer is wearing.

  7. Sayrah says:

I’ve never seen the show but they looked so happy. Good for them

  8. The Old KC says:

Rumer is so beautiful when she smiles. I know women should feel comfortable expressing themselves in whatever emotional state – sadness, anger, frustration, whatever – but her smile is just gorgeous and lights up her whole face. I have always only seen her in paparazzi photos – when she looked sad and guarded (appropriately so) – and never smiling like this. Maybe it’s the dancing, maybe it’s because she’s full of joy, I dunno. I’m really happy for her and glad she won. Way to go, Rumer!

  9. littlestar says:

She looks gorgeous! And what an incredible dancer she is – she actually looks like she’s a professional who has been dancing for years. I’m guessing she must have really clicked with her partner and that he was also a good teacher.

Good for her. I know the years of internet cruelty about her looks probably really really got to her.

  10. Jessica says:

Rumor’s sisters were always so thrilled when she danced. And they were even more thrilled when she won. It was really nice to see her sisters cheer her on so much.

  11. Christy says:

I have a soft spot for Rumer also. I think it’s sad that there are barely any comments on a post about her win and fabulous dancing but there are always tons of comments on posts suggesting how unattractive she is, etc. I think she is really cute and seems like she has a great personality too. I know I know, this is Celebitchy but still.

  12. Iheartgossip says:

This show has pre-picked winners. So.

  13. MrsBPitt says:

This was one of the best seasons, so far! I was hoping Rumer and Val would win!!!! They were awesome!!!! I wish they would get rid of Erin Andrews, though!!! She is terrible!!!! Bring back Leah Remini!!! She brought some laughs to the interviews, when she filled in for Erin…

I can’t ever watch Bruce Willis cry without crying myself .. don’t know why, I must be an emotional wreck.
