Alison Pill wore a yellow 1930s dress from Etsy for her wedding: awesome?

pill2

For some reason, I thought Alison Pill was already married, but that’s because I confused her with Amber Tamblyn, which I know is practically sacrilegious for some people (“some people” = Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants-loonies). It’s funny the way my mind works sometimes, because not only did I confuse the two actresses, but I had good reason to confuse these wedding stories: both brides wore yellow! When Amber married David Cross in 2012, she wore a marigold-yellow gown and went shoeless. When Alison Pill married Joshua Leonard over the weekend, she also wore yellow!

I’m including some of the Instagram pics of the wedding in this post, and you can see more here. Pill is 29 and her new husband is 39. They were engaged for four months (I have no memory of their engagement announcement?). The wedding looked pretty hipster, and Pill’s rep told E! News that the wedding was a “Quaker-inspired ceremony.” Are they Quakers though? Or did they just read about Quaker-inspired ceremonies in the latest issue of Hipster Bride?

As for Alison’s yellow dress, it’s not designer. She bought it on Etsy and it’s legitimately a 1930s vintage dress, probably not intended as a wedding gown, but it looks fine. I enjoy a modest sleeve, the neckline is flattering and I like that she could actual dance in her dress. I guess she thought she had to be blonde to pull off a yellow dress? I remember when she was a redhead – I actually associate her more with ginger hair, which may be yet another reason I confused her with Amber Tamblyn.

    That’s a lovely dress –

  5. GingerCrunch says:

They’re evoking couples of the WWII era, aren’t they? I think it’s really charming and a nice change from cookie cutter weddings that you can’t escape these days. Just lovely.

    • boredblond says:

That’s what I thought..down to the hair and makeup. Hate yellow, but love the look and the personal feel.

    • Loulou says:

Yes! I really think they pulled the whole look off. Maybe it’s hipstery, but I’ll take it over the cookie cutter weddings I keep going to.

    • Jen43 says:

      Very nostalgic and beautiful.

  6. Eleonor says:

The dress is great ! And she has done what I will do if I get married: buy an amazing vintage dress.

  7. Lindy79 says:

I really like it, it suits her and they look really happy.

    • Green Girl says:

I agree. I can’t pull off wearing yellow (I would look sickly if I did!), so my hat is off to her. They both look happy, too.

  8. bella says:

    very sweet.
    and she looks lovely…
seems very much like her style.
she and her new husband do look like a couple straight out of the 40s as
    GingerCrunch notes…

I love when the wedding is a family and legit friends event. The bride chooses to wear something unique. Or better if it is vintage. With a great cake!

I am so tired of the huge cluster of a nightmare, when there is a wedding planner. With her headset on, acting as if she is producing the Oscars. Where everyone in the immediate family… is not exactly loving the bride on the wedding day OF HER DREAMS! Her “DREAMS” people! Why are trying to destroyed her DREAMS!

Can you tell I have been involved in some of these? LOL!

I can truly appreciate a great wedding, when it is about the couple and their happiness. But I am very tired of the 40K wedding event of the year. So the bride can terrorize everyone in her line of sight, for months on end.

I love seeing a sweet small wedding. With vintage dresses… and happiness. That is the couple, that would get an excellent gift from me.

    • Jayna says:

“With her headset on, acting as if she is producing the Oscars.” LOL Good one.

    • Hawkeye says:

      Well said, Hautie!

    • Nikki says:

Agree with all Hautie said. Thanks H!

    • Ange says:

We had the small sweet wedding and really enjoyed it. It was suuuuper easy to plan too, nobody got stressed at all. Unfortunately the vintage dress didn’t happen because I’m 5’9 and built like a linebacker (damn those dainty vintage women). Still, I bet if more brides knew how much more fun and low stress the simple wedding is they’d do it.

  10. GoodNamesAllTaken says:

She looks radiant and happy, which is what matters.

  11. Renee says:

I have never heard of this person before but a few things occured to me while reading this post:

    1) To me she looks like the Veronica Mars actress but nicer.
    2) Her husband looks like Peter Sarsgaard (sp?).
    3) Because her husband’s last name is Cross that is probably the reason for the confusion with Amber Tamblyn.

    • Brittney B says:

She was on Newsroom, and she was in my favorite holiday movie Pieces of April (as the uptight sister of Katie Holmes). I don’t see Kristen Bell at all; funny how perceptions can differ.

Also, her husband is Joshua Leonard… no Cross in it.

      • Renee says:

The top picture is where I see Kristen Bell. And I haven’t watched either the show or film that you’ve cited. Regarding the last name, I clearly wasn’t reading too closely when I clicked on this post, lol. Thanks for the correction.

      • Franca says:

She also played Maude in Pillars of the Earth.

      • belle de jour says:

Yay! Another Pieces of April fan!
        (sorry for the off-topic squeal)

      • delphi says:

After Maggie on “The Newsroom” (lord, I shipped her and John Gallagher Jr. SO HARD), my favorite role of hers was as Kim, the “girl drummer” in Sex Bob-omb in “Scott Pilgrim vs. The World”.

      • Lensblury says:

Yes! I loved The Newsroom… such a great show, and she was so good in it. And I adored Scott Pilgrim & the whole concept.

    • Timbuktu says:

      Renee,
I always thought she looked like Kristen Bell as well! I think it’s the close-set eyes.

  12. Jenna says:

Gorgeous and unique! What else could a bride want, really? Nice to see them married in a way that will matter to them – but I know my view of things is weird so who knows. I told my husband to go ahead and plan things, let my mom pick the dress…. all I did was write the vows and pick the day. Turned up and it was pretty awesome I’ve been told – and no debt after! (“Told” because I had walking pneumonia. Past a certain point other then responding to whatever orders whichever bridesmaid had taken over running the bride, I really wasn’t involved.)

  13. QQ says:

Whoa… wasn’t she engaged to Jay Baruchel Like a year ago??

    • Bridget says:

They broke up a couple of years ago.

    • esthetix says:

They were a real cute couple. Although it seemed like Jay was into it more than she was.

God, I’m so glad i’m not famous. Beeing blingsided by an ex’s wedding through facebook is bad enough.

  14. Lilacflowers says:

Lovely. All the best to them.

    • belle de jour says:

You just burned calories and built muscles, Goopanderson style. Well done.

  15. Esmom says:

I’m echoing the comments that she looks lovely and happy. And he’s cute. Part of me wants to roll my eyes at the sheer hipster-ness of the whole thing but it looks like it was sweet and fun and I love that it wasn’t conventional and excessive.

  16. JENNA says:

    This look really suits her.

  17. it'sjustblanche says:

Amazing dress. I love it when brides do something that’s still classic but different. So tired of the strapless look.

I love vintage looks but I’m busty and often can’t wear them. I have found lots of good seamstresses on Etsy who will make gorgeous knockoffs of the real thing. Some are super pricy but some are less than $80 for a cute dress. Just search “1950s dress handmade” or whatever you’re looking for. I am packing one I had made and taking it to Paris next week!

  18. deezee says:

Maybe you thought she was married because she used to be engaged to Jay Baruchel. They broke up after some nude photos of her leaked. Looks like a really nice small wedding but super hipster.

  19. bobslaw says:

They look so happy! That’s all I want in a wedding.

  20. JenniferJustice says:

Love the vintage look. Love the smaller more subdued affair. I, too, tire of the cliche` weddings that only seem to stress the bride and pull her every which way.

    • it'sjustblanche says:

This right here. It’s getting to the point where if someone does something even remotely different I want to bring out a marching band and cheerleaders to congratulate them for not being like everyone else.

  21. Dahlia1947 says:

I love everything vintage, so it’s great! I especially love the fashions and hair styles from that decade, so yeah this IS awesome!

  22. Norman Bates' Mother says:

I didn’t know they were together but I only know her from gossip sites and him from a silly Polish romantic comedy called Expecting Love. I love how happy, relaxed and in love they both looked. That’s the way it should be but most of the big, fancy weddings I attended (organized by people, who cant’t afford big, fancy weddings) were too stressful and expensive for the couple to look that way. A wedding like this one or eloping is my dream.

  23. Merritt says:

I like the style of the dress but not the color. They look really happy though.

  24. cujokay says:

Hate it. It looks like a bad prom dress.

  25. Penelope says:

Love the dress and the color on her.

  26. TotallyBiased says:

    ZELDA!!!!

  27. Iheartgossip says:

I love it! And I love she supports Etsy. Double the goodness!!

  28. jenn12 says:

Legitimately awesome. I wish I owned clothing from the 20s and 30s.

  29. Talita says:

I love it! They look so happy!

  30. Maria A. says:

Nice. It really works for her.

  31. Ariel says:

OMG IT’S THE GUY FROM BLAIR WITCH! This is amazing.

Totally lovely wedding — ceremony in the round, self-uniting/quaker service, that yellow dress. Adore it!
