Bobby Flay gifted a champion horse to his wife & he pocketed the winnings

Even if you don’t believe all of the stories about Bobby Flay’s wandering eye, surely all of the divorce drama stories have turned you against him? Because Flay sounds like such a massive douchebag. The kind of douchebag who cancels all of their joint credit cards as soon as paperwork is filed. The kind of douchebag who publicly blames his estranged wife’s health problems on a botched boob job. Obviously, Stephanie March’s people are leaking most of this damaging information about Flay but even in the war of leaked information, I just feel sorry for March for all that she’s put up with over the years. Anyway, the latest salvo in March’s efforts to throw out their prenup: Flay bought March a champion horse as a gift and Flay pocketed the winnings.

Bobby Flay’s estranged wife says Bobby is so gross he gave her a racehorse as an anniversary gift and pocketed more than a hundred thousand dollars in purses.

Stephanie March claims in her divorce case Bobby bought her “Dad’s Crazy” back in 2009 for their 4th wedding anniversary. Turns out the equine was a champ, raking in $130k in winnings. Stephanie claims when it came to the horse Bobby was a hog, not only keeping the purse money but selling the horse for $60k and pilfering every penny.

As we previously reported, March and Flay have been at each other’s throats in an ugly divorce battle that just gets uglier. She wants the prenup set aside, claiming it’s grossly unfair. As for the horse scratch, Flay admits he registered it in her name, but denies lining his own pockets with the winnings. Giddy up.

[From TMZ]

This is one of the better arguments March has made for a more equitable division of property and assets. This gets to the heart of just what kind of partnership there was in their 10-year-marriage. Obviously, when you’re married and in love, you can easily say “what’s mine is yours and what’s yours is mine.” But if you give your wife a horse as a gift and then pocket the profits from that gift, then it gets pretty tricky. I seriously don’t understand why Flay hasn’t made March a settlement offer.

The more I hear about Bobby the more I dislike him. He seems like an absolute ASS!!

  2. Amy says:

I think he hasn’t made an offer because he’s comfortable being publicly seen as a douche.

Which…I don’t know much about him but if he was about 30-something when he got with March and had two public divorces with allegations of cheating then yeah he’s fine being a public douche.

Tbh, I’m not fully understanding what happened here. So he gave her the horse but still used it to race competitively and kept the money from those winnings?

    • Meow Mix says:

The horse was registered under the name SMarch Racing. The horse actually won just a little over $118k from 2009-2011 and was in training with Todd Pletcher who charges on average of 50k in training bills at the very least. So in reality I doubt there was much money left over despite what the horse made on the track. Now that being said he did sell the horse at public auction for 60K so those proceeds should definitely have gone to her.

      • Amy says:

So who paid to take care of the horse? Was it her or did Flay put all the money into the care and maintenance of the horse?

        Thank you for your reply.

      • American In Oz says:

To add to what Meow Mix said…I doubt there was much profit at all from this “gift”. I think the service fee for the stallion was roughly $10,000 so that means that Bobby Flay purchased the horse for probably quite a bit more seeing as how whoever owned it previously wanted to make a profit selling it to him and he still had to pay for the service fee for the stallion, keep for mare and foal, keep from when it was a weanlng and actual weaning fees, yearling keep AND prep.

There was little to no profit out of this horse ever. Her best bet would have been to keep the mare and breed her, hoping her goals would make a profit.

I’m also side eyeing this “gift” for a few reasons. One, it’s a shit gift and could have cost her quite a few pennies and two MANY MANY MANY men in the racing world race their horses under their wives names. None of these horses were “gifts”.

  3. Jayna says:

This, on a much, much, much smaller but equally selfish scale, reminds me the time an ex-boyfriend bought me a $150 bottle of wine as a birthday present, with a couple of smaller gifts that were okay. It had zero to do with me and all about him as he was the huge wine lover.

  4. swedish chef says:

yah, he’s a douche. But she signed a prenup, a binding contract, on her own free will. Prenups are done before the marriage to settle everything in case of divorce to avoid a huge mess. It’s a crappy deal but she should have thought of that before signing. The nice thing for Bobby to do is give her more, but he won’t because he’s a douche and knows he doesn’t have to.

    • Div says:

I had no idea she signed a pre-nup. She’s not going to win then, even if he is a jerk of epic levels.

    • littlestar says:

I agree. I know it’s not the popular sentiment on here, but what does she expect? She signed a prenuptial agreement, a legal contract! He may be a massive *sshole, but that reason alone doesn’t entitle her to more money.

      • Astrid says:

Yup, count me in with the unpopular opinion. She was an adult when she signed the prenup. He had a douche past already. She lived the life for 10 years. There aren’t any kids involved. While I agree that BF isn’t the nicest person, what did she expect?

      • Dena says:

Hate to say it but some women enjoy douche-bag asshole type men until those douce bag asshole type men turn their douche bag asshole type ways onto them.

March could have initially seen Flay as a type-A take no prisoners type of guy & she found that attractive. Now, she’s on the other side of it.

      • Jordan says:

Have to agree littlestar. I think he’s an assbag for not offering something more reasonable to make this go away, but she did agree to it and sign it.

    • tabasco says:

the “she signed a prenup/binding contract” argument is getting old. contracts are thrown out all the time. as are prenups.

and Bobby may well have to give her more. he has endorsements to lose, the public opinion that his business is built on at risk, and if it’s true that she was given that prenup to sign just days before the wedding, that’s a big no-no for prenups – – from a legal perspective, not just from a douche perspective.

      • Amy says:

True, but usually legal contracts are thrown out for legitimate legal reasons. Not just because your ex is a jerk. Ironically prenups pretty much exist solely because at least one or both exes might be a jerk.

The fact that the horse excuse is coming after her claiming he owes his business to her for being such an amazing taste-tester reeks of desperation.

      • tabasco says:

i agree that the taste-tester and horse thing are kind of random, but having a prenup signed right before the wedding is generally, legally, considered duress and a legitimate legal reason to have it chucked. i think that’s her most well-founded in actual law argument and she’s throwing in the rest for backup and to hurt him with his audience. a prenup signed under legal duress is possible legit grounds for invalidation. putting the screws to him publicily, knowing he needs public goodwill or he goes the way of Paula Deen, is a good tactic to get him to just settle already without having to win in court.

i do think she was stupid to sign it – – and stupid to stay with him – – but i don’t think “omg it’s a LEGAL DOCUMENT” counts for much here.

i really want to know if the prenup really was given to her right before the wedding. b/c prenups are made to be challenged. and pulling that move, presenting the prenup right before the wedding, is incredibly stupid on the part of his lawyer’s if they wanted it to be airtight. if that really happened, they gave her a huge opening for getting the prenup chucked. his lawyers must know that. so i’m with Kaiser and don’t see why he’s not just parting with some of his giant pile of cash and making this go away already.

between the (alleged) last minute prenup and (apparent) lack of wiggle room on making her an offer with a confi ASAP for the sake of his rep and ongoing business, it sounds like he might have some crappy lawyers.

  5. minx says:

Didn’t like him before, REALLY don’t like him now.
I can’t believe he, or his “people”, don’t realize how bad he is looking in this whole thing. Or they just don’t care?

    • GingerCrunch says:

Good point! He’s not the least bit concerned how he comes across to the public, who frequent his restaurants? We must all be a bunch of foodie chumps!

  6. Audrey says:

This is a much better argument for sure.

He should settle for sure. The media is just repeatedly discussing his douchebag ways, not great for his image. He didn’t have a great one before this but it’s only getting worse

    • Lirko says:

Exactly. I’m kind of dumbfounded as to why he isn’t being given legal advice pointing out this very obvious fact. All those people who shop at Kohls will be far less likley to buy his brand if he keeps this up, to say nothing of all his endorsed products, and his restaurants. He is literally putting his brand in jeopardy. Maybe he belives he is above this, but I think he’s mistaking. He’s failing to look at the big picture here.

  7. Div says:

Bobby is such a creepy f*cker, but my sympathy for Stephanie is pretty low considering she was the one who first began leaking all this sh*t to the press and started the war in the press and she did sign a prenuptial agreement. He also had a history of being horrible with women, and it’s not like it was a one time thing or stuff when he was in his 20s/early 30s that she could convince herself that he grew out of…dude was a straight up Jack Nicholson style womanizer/douche to women. Nevertheless, I don’t understand why he doesn’t just give her a good settlement…he can afford it and was obviously a cheating do*chebag so give her what she’s owed.

    • Perfectly executed Chewbacca sound says:

Leaking stories to the press may be her only leverage considering her mistakes with the prenup. I’m on her side personally.

      • Div says:

I’m definitely on her side, I just feel like she’s handling this poorly. I’m also rather hesitant on people trying to renegotiate pre-nups.

  8. renee28 says:

He’s always had a reputation and it’s never hurt his popularity. Why would he be worried now?

    • Virgilia Coriolanus says:

That’s what I was thinking. He’s professional, he does his job very well, and his image is NOT “loving family man”. I never heard much about him, but even *I* knew that he was a total whore. The only people fooled by him are little old grannies.

    • tabasco says:

He’s always had a reputation as an arrogant douche, but not really as a total mean-spirited dickbag, which is how he’s coming across. I’ve actually always thought he married her to put a little nice-guy shine on his arrogant reputation and now what was supposed to help his reputation is making it worse than it’s ever been.

I kind of doubt this will result in some giant blowup that results in sponsors dumping him and the like, but I do think it definitely has the potential to cement that reputation he already had as an arrogant prick into a reputation as a real jerk and dig into his bottom line when you consider that plenty of his customers and audience are women.

  9. Janie says:

Grow up, both of you! The lawyers are going to drain you dry. It is what it is… Move on!

  10. Tig says:

Eeh, Food Channel bosses may care if he comes across as a stingy low rent Dbag to
a wife who’s caring for a very ill mother. Thought a lot of Bobby’s shows center on his folksy charm and heading out to the hinder lands. Now in addition to Stephanie, I feel sorry for this horse- hope he was re-homed successfully and not raced till he dropped-or worse.

  11. anne_000 says:

If she had a title or registration on the horse under her name, then how would he be able to sell it without her permission? This story doesn’t make any sense.

If it was legally her horse, then wouldn’t she have been involved in putting it in races and then she would have had to inform whomever on where to send the winnings, right? Wouldn’t the checks be in her name or in the name of her own corporation? Or does she not take any active part in her own financial dealings?

Is she so absolutely helpless and so dependent on a man to do everything for her? I’m not on Flay’s side, but I’m getting tired of her ‘weak woman’ excuses.

When is she going to start taking responsibility for her own financial actions? She won’t take responsibility for signing a bad pre-nup, her lack of common sense to be given a title and salary for her supposed years of great work to build up Flay’s multi-million dollar restaurant businesses, her inactive role in what was happening with her horse in the racing industry, etc.

So when is she going to fess up and admit she did this to herself? She was 30 or over when she got married. When is she going to stop claiming naivety and infantile dependence on Flay for her financial decisions for the past ten years or so?

    • sills says:

+1 I know she’s humiliated and that’s why she’s fighting for every penny, but I feel there’s a bit of a double standard here. If a man had been living large off his wealthy wife’s salary for years, neither working nor raising kids, then this all happened–would people really be saying “Yeah dude, take her to the cleaners!” I think most people would be saying “Get a @*#-ing job and join the 99%, you rolled the dice on a known cheating scumbag and you lost.”

    • anne_000 says:

Another thing… If her horse won $130k and sold for $60k, then what happened when the IRS came to her looking for the tax payments?

Did she tell them that she doesn’t know nothing about nothing because she lets her hubby do all the thinking and the money business?

Also, who paid for all the expenses: stabling including food and supervision, training, maintenance including medical, transportation, race entry fees, etc.? Was it her or was it Flay? Did he use some of the winnings to offset the cost of the expenses and taxes? Or did she do it out of her own pocket but without being able to use the winnings and the sales money?

Sources leaked information about how Flay took the money but why aren’t they saying that it’s even worse because March took care of all the expenses? Is it because he paid for everything and that’s why he took the winnings and the sales money?

I don’t think we’re hearing the whole story about this horse.

    • Amy says:

Gotta agree it’s the ‘Woe is me, I was just a sweet innocent trusting girl’ that’s annoying me about her claims.

If he’d abused her mentally or physically I’d understand challenging the prenup, but the fact that the very legal document put in place for if their marriage goes belly up is being challenged because ‘he was a jerk’ is pretty pathetic.

  12. Jaded says:

He’s really shooting himself in the foot by being such a foot-stomping, scrooge-like, cheap-a$$ little prick. He could do a lot more to rehabilitate his image as a truly awful person by ponying up another million, which he can easily afford, but all he’s doing is tarnishing the turd of a person he already is.

  13. tabasco says:

i wonder what his fellow food network stars think about all this. i’ve wondered before what they think about so many of his shows being basically about “you can’t beat ME.” i mean, he is a great chef, but that’s a pretty obnoxious route to take.

i kind of thought more would be leaked about various affairs by now. maybe he doesn’t want to pay stephanie more b/c he’s already spending so much on keeping his other chicks quiet!
