George Clooney: ‘I’m a big believer in the idea that you can’t try to look younger’

wenn22529808

I’ve mentioned this a few times over the past few weeks, but George Clooney has been looking really, really old during the Tomorrowland promotional tour. He’s 54 years old now and during some of his appearances, he didn’t look a day under 63. While we all age and I don’t want to get age-shaming about anyone, male or female, I have been wondering why George’s appearance seemed to really decline so rapidly over the past year. What could it be, what could it be? Could it be that George’s attempt to rebrand himself as a happily married man with a lovely 17-years-younger wife has sort of blown up in his face? Or is it just that George’s back is killing him and chronic pain will age you?

In any case, George thought it would be a good idea to chat about how he’s totally fine with aging and that trying to look younger will just make you look older. Yeah, George, that goes for trying to look hip by marrying a woman 17 years younger too!

George Clooney is Hollywood’s ultimate Silver Fox, so we’d probably go into mourning if he ever decided to dye his salt-and-pepper strands. Luckily, the 54-year-old actor maintains he’s not touching his grays.

“For me, it’s never been an issue or an option,” he told BBC radio’s Jenni Murray about his famous hair during an interview promoting his new film, Tomorrowland. “I don’t think it would make much sense. I’ve seen it happen, and particularly on men I don’t think it works very well. I think it actually makes you look older. I’m a big believer in the idea that you can’t try to look younger — you can just try to look the best you can at the age you are.”

And although he embraces his mature mane, the actor said that aging does affect him.

“There is nothing fun [about aging],” he shared. “I know for actresses it’s infinitely worse because of public perception based on nothing except studios not hiring them, but I think for all of us you have to come to terms with getting older and not trying to fight it. You have a couple of options, which [are]: get older or die. You have to get used to the idea that your roles in films and who you are and how you’re perceived is going to change. And that will disappoint people at times.”

We imagine the support of his successful, gorgeous and crazy-stylish 37-year-old wife, Amal Clooney, helps the star feel youthful as well.

“She’s someone I enjoy spending every minute of the day with, and I’m very proud to be around,” he gushed about the lawyer and civil rights activist. “And watching the things she does I admire so greatly. I’ve always been involved in things other than this business, long before I was successful at it. She’s been doing it quietly and unheralded for a long period of time, and I’m very proud to be married to her.”

[From People]

His grey hair is like the least offensive part of Clooney. That being said, he has dyed it before, usually for a particular role, which I guess is “okay” in the book of Clooney. I don’t think hair dye is a big deal for men or women, and I’m saying that as a woman who started going grey in my 20s, and I’ve been dyeing my hair for years now. So my attitude on dye is: no judgment. But George is right in general – the more people try to seem youthful, the older they look.

My Dad always said you could tell how someone’s health was affecting them by looking at their eyes. George’s eyes look a little less bright and also he’s got bags (then mine are the size of dump trucks and I’m 28). That, together with what we’ve heard about his chronic back pain, I’m guessing he’s just super uncomfortable most of the time.

    • PunkyMomma says:

I agree with your father’s belief. It’s just not age, it’s his illness that has him looking so tired. Chronic pain takes a huge toll on every aspect of your life.

    • Ange says:

I had a nasty back injury when I was about 26, I looked bloody terrible that year. I can only imagine what ongoing chronic back pain is doing to George, I can’t shade him on that.

  3. Takeasadsong says:

Spot on. Took the words right out of my mouth. Good for him though. Age gracefully Giorgio.

  4. GiGi says:

I just watched Burn After Reading (great movie) and was shocked at how young both George Clooney & Brad Pitt looked. It was only made 7-8 years ago! It was a really stark comparison with how George Clooney looks now.

    • Sabrine says:

A little nip and tuck around the eyes might freshen him up but not look like he’s had anything done. He looks too grey. His hair is grey; his clothes are grey; his skin looks ashy and grey. Maybe if he got out of the continual black and grey clothing, he wouldn’t look so tired and old. It doesn’t help that he’s got a sparking and vibrant woman on his arm who could pass for his daughter.

      • Hautie says:

I actually mention this earlier in the week… somewhere… that the color gray, is the devil. White hair does not age you… like that gray/steel color hair will.

Be it in clothes or your hair color. The color gray is the great neutralizer. It will drain the color out of your face. And make you look ashy in general.

And when you already have circles around your eyes…. wearing anything gray near your face. Just accentuates it. It makes you look tired and old.

George needs to lighten up the wardrobe. Immediately. No gray or blue gray suits. Maybe have a little brunette streaked into the hair, to give it some depth. Not a full on dye job. Just a little low lights around the face. Tame down the steel color hair.

And get a little sun, to bring out some rosiness to his cheeks. Maybe a Summer in Italy on the boat… and some low lights in the hair will make a world a difference. He might start to feel better too.

      • FLORC says:

        Hautie
No. Gray doesn’t accentuate your aging features. It’s additional factors. Not only because you have gray on you.
I have a small streak of shiny silver in my hair and people still think i’m 20. And I play up my streak. And I adore certain neutrals and grays in my clothing. Even just as a tonal shange.

Here, George just looks old. He’s been looking old. Pain is the root of many factors that age you greatly.

  5. Jayna says:

George has always looked older than his age, but very handsome. I notice in older photos on the internet his face was thinner than now. So now in his fifties, his age is showing up even more in his eyes especially. His face is heavier all around the jaw line, so I suspect he is a littler heavier than years ago and it’s showing up in his face. The heaviness in his face gives it an older look too. Also, maybe that’s why he’s wearing dad jeans.

Secondly, he drinks a lot. It shows up on men as they get older. The puffiness is worse because of alcohol and you don’t have a clear-eyed look.

Thirdly, I do believe he suffers a lot of back pain, but suffers in silence. He’s been all over the place promoting, and sitting in airplanes, etc, can’t make his back feel good. It affects the way you carry yourself when you are in chronic pain, which gives him the posture of an older man.

  6. Tiffany says:

Looking back, was it worth it for an Oscar, George.

  7. Beth says:

    He looks like he hurts.

  8. Liberty says:

The oldest thing I am seeing on this page is the gushing, slipped-in reality-repackaging for further use as needed: “…I’ve always been involved in things other than this business, long before I was successful at it. She’s been doing it quietly and unheralded for a long period of time,”

  9. boredblond says:

I’d believe these stories before ANY Clooney quote at this point:
    1. The Kardashians have joined a Konvent..’we always loved black’ sez Kris. 2. Princess Lindsay! Lohan and Prince Harry set the date! 3. The Kennedy center honors this year go to Rob Schneider and Carrot Top. Aaahh!! You knew that with all the comments about how old he looked, he would call his bff People to vent for him. Clooney didn’t receive so much coverage even when he was hot (er/ocean’s years). The couch springs are shot– Enough already!

  10. frisbeejada says:

Thing that feels ‘off’ to me about this is that he does look constantly strained and in pain and his ‘lovely’ wife looks totally unconcerned about him. I know she is always posing for photo’s but if that was a loved one of mine, my concern for them would occasionally show, even in public. Leaves me with the impression she couldn’t care less about the state of his health. And yes, I know this is all supposition on my part (good heavens I’m on a gossip site!) but that’s the feeling I get. It convinces me even more this is a marriage of convenience/contract and nothing more.

    • chaine says:

I had not noticed this until you pointed it out. You are so right! She always looks starry-eyed and off in la-la-land from the paparazzi attention, ignoring poor crumpled-looking George.

    • siri says:

She DOESN’T care- that’s what I see as well. We all know and see a natural loving/caring look when it’s infront of us, not so here.

      • nicole says:

This women doesnt even cook, let alone care about her husbands back issues, shes all about herself. She just doesnt seem warm to me, poor George.

      • siri says:

@nicole: True, there is no warmth to her, yet that ‘poor’ George picked her…

    • cheryl says:

      Same! Have always noticed this.

Who are the young looking 50+ dudes? All I can think of is Viggo at the moment.

    • Hawkeye says:

I think Tom Cruise looks great for 52. Chris Rock, John Stamos and Rob Lowe look great too.

    • Jayna says:

      John Stamos – 51
      Rob Lowe – 51
      Tom Cruise – 52
      Lenny Kravitz – 50
      Keanu Reeves – 50
      Kevin Costner – 60
      John Corbett – 54

      • respect says:

Lenny just turned 51. Hit it? Why yes I would…Clooney is a bit top Cary Grant. Love the films bit noto that into it

    • siri says:

      Benjamin Pratt, 51
      Clive Owen, 50
Jon Bon Jovi, 53 (ok, he just acts occassionally)
      Hugh Grant, 54

      • boredblond says:

I’ll add Colin Firth..older than cloon, but forever handsome/classy..George can never be confused with classy–he spent all his credibility chips trying to sell his wife’s celebrity

      • siri says:

Colin Firth, right. That man has class.

    • TotallyBiased says:

      Hugh Laurie–55

  12. Lama Bean says:

I didn’t really notice him looking older until the leather jacket photo. I totally see it now.

  13. maria1981 says:

he’s a married man now. of course he is sad and aging faster. marriage kills your soul.

  14. E-train says:

But wait…didn’t he have an eye job about ten-ish years ago? I distinctly remember some conversation about it in an interview with Julia Roberts!

  15. DogMom says:

Didn’t Gere say something similar a few months ago and he (Gere) looks like he’s actually enjoying growing older / wiser.

Clooney just looks miserable. And he’s about 10yrs younger.

    • Jayna says:

Gere doesn’t have chronic back pain. Big difference. And he’s single and mingling.

      • Guesto says:

Someone (intelligent) with chronic back pain would not abuse alcohol in the way that Clooney does. Firstly, he would be on medication that would not accommodate or work with a well-documented tequila/vodka habit. Secondly, a chronic back problem would not accommodate jumping in and out of vehicles, as he did during the filming of Monuments Men. And thirdly, if I need a thirdly, an intelligent person would not put their health at risk by doing the firstly and secondly above.

So, where does that leave his so-called chronic back pain?

      • Christin says:

Agree with the above. My mother has endured severe RA for decades, and it gives her tremendous pain from head to toe. Yet she is mistaken for someone 20 years younger, looks wise (other than misshapen joints and other visible RA signs). However, my mother has taken anti-inflammatory meds and bypassed the strong pain meds that I personally believe are the big culprits of looking aged and haggard, especially if combined with alcohol.

I think Guesto hit the larger combination of factors for GC looking older than his years.

      • FLORC says:

        Guesto
He more than likely does have back pain. He had a very real injury years ago and it’s not a stretch for that to have lead to chronic pain.
I wouldn’t be shocked if he has been mixing alcohol with pills though or not properly hydrating himself.
He appears to me as 1 of those people who believes you can drink it because it’s “the good stuff” and not something that will rot you from the inside you can only drink in your youth.
And it was noted when they got engaged/dating Amal put him on a better diet and reduced/eliminated alcohol. He should be improving.

      • Kate says:

He said many times he doesn’t take pills because of what happened to Rosemary and a few other people in his family. Nothing stronger than ibuprofen at least. So there’s no mixing with alcohol going on.

      • SuePerb says:

Does he still suffer from chronic back pain or are people still referring to old interviews from Oscars (begging) 2005? It would be extremely rare for someone to still suffer from a punctured dura over 11 years later. Recovery is between a few weeks and rarest of cases being 8 years.

Two things make me think that he doesn’t (or he is a big woosie), one being an interview during his Oscar campaign where he was describing a lumbar puncture and he either over dramatised it or he has a low pain threshold. I have had loads of lumbar punctures in my life and yes they are done while you are awake and they don’t hurt that much. Secondly is all the stories from him and his friends talking about all the basketball he plays and what great shape he is in.

I agree with Guesto. And if his back was that bad, army jeeps would be a big no because they are a bumpy old ride which would have thrown his back right out.

      • FLORC says:

        Kate
People claim a lot of things, but when it comes to pain. Chronic pain. You manage it. And he drinks currently or past, a lot. Mixing alcohol with anything your body has to flush out and filter causes issues. And if he’s managing it with booze he’s doing more harm than pain meds. The justifications some people will give is amazing.

        SuePerb
As recently as his proposal that I can think of. It was noted how he had trouble kneeling to propose and was in a great deal of pain.
IMO that he can do all these things with such pain is he’s managing it somehow. OTT I wonder if it was a nerve block?

      • SuePerb says:

The joke (and it was a joke because he was wanting her to answer ) during the proposal was an age joke, there was no reference to back pain. People are connecting this but it is not what he said. People living with chronic back pain do cope but through careful management. They will walk, even doing power walks but usually they are advised to avoid running because the jarring of your body through running will cause pain. His basketball days would have been over.

It was a punctured dura and the pain involved with this is due to leakage of cerebrospinal fluid. This creates space between the brain and spinal cord. To stop the pain after neurosurgery to have it repaired people get blood transferred there through lumbar punctures to fill the void. The space is replaced by blood . Once the space is filled then the pain eases. It takes between a few weeks and usually about 6 months (rare cases can take up to 8 years) for it to repair itself and replace lost cerebrospinal fluid and people go on with their normal lives.

By everything he has done it appears it has healed

  16. lisa2 says:

I wonder if he is talking about aging because people online are saying he looks older. I don’t recall him ever talking about aging. I think he is reading too much of the stuff online. That will age you quick. And will make you change or make choices you wouldn’t otherwise make. All his answers seem to be in response to something mentioned in Gossipland

    • Jayna says:

He has talked about aging and Hollywood as far back as 2000 and about not having plastic surgery or dying his hair when he gets older in a bid to look younger. He said forties can be a peak for a male actor with some decent parts in your 50s but transitioning to more character roles in your 50s. He also discussed how he has always looked older than actors around his same age. That interview was like 15 years ago. He’s talked about it since.

      Here is a 2011 interview.

But, he insists, he has always looked older than his years. “I remember, shortly after my 43rd birthday being in Italy and a younger girl said to me: ‘Hey, Georgio, how old are you?’ I was stupid enough to ask what no man should ever ask: ‘How old do you think I am?’ She said: ‘50’. I said: ‘You think I am 50 years old?’ She looked puzzled and said: ‘OK then – 51?’”

Clooney is prepared to laugh at himself. He also knows what he’s prepared to do – and not to do – in his future life and career. “I won’t be having any facelifts,” he says. “I always look at actors who have them and ask: ‘Why?’ They no longer look like themselves. The older actors I’ve admired, like Paul Newman, simply aged naturally.

“I will work less in front of the camera, simply because there are fewer roles for older actors. So I will try to direct more films and use my experience that way. I want to write and direct for a mature, thinking audience. I have never underestimated the power of older people. My father worked for 40 years as a news anchorman in TV and never seems to stop doing things at 77.”

      • nicole says:

Remember he joked about his age and looking older in Oceans Twelve and that was back in 2002 I think. He just has that older look, you either find it attractive or you dont.

  17. MindlessContemplations says:

My father got remarried himself around age 55 and before he got married to my step mother –who he knew for less than a year before marrying, similar timeline to Clooney–he looked incredible for his age. People easily thought he was 10-12 years younger than his actual age. As soon as he settled into a comfortable predictable married life it was like BAM 2 years later and his looks had really aged. I wonder if Clooney has a combination of chronic pain and just finally feeling comfortable and settled into his life that ages him.

  18. Colette says:

Well if I was a multimillionaire with debilitating chronic back pain I would work less or maybe not work at all.I wouldn’t be playing pickup basketball games. What’s the point of being rich if you can’t rest when you are ill.

  19. Jess says:

I agree with him, I’ve never seen someone who had plastic surgery and thought they looked significantly younger, they simply look their age and like they’ve had work done.

  20. Jayna says:

I remember when George looked great. I loved Michelle Pfeiffer and George in One Fine Day. They had great chemistry.

  21. nicole says:

In some photos George looks great to me and others he can look so old. Ive noticed over the years sometimes he can look awful and you think his looks are starting to go, then next minute he looks hot again, sometimes it depends on his weight or hairdo. I always think he suits a little weight on and when his hair is cut in a short crewcut he looks great. My favourite looks of his where in Oceans Twelve, Michael Clayton and The American. I think the past year has stressed him out alot, with all the media attention with his wedding and so on. Also when hes around Amal he always seems tense to me he never looks relaxed, that leads to stress and thats not good for you.

  22. sofia says:

In principle I agree with him, but there are many ways to “fight it” that don’t include surgery. Getting older affect your health and if you take care of yourself from that perspective you are fighting it in a positive way. Doing some exercise, eating well, not drinking too much, sleeping well, doing things that are good for the soul. I mean, from what his says (Don’t know what he was asked about though) it seems aging is just about the looks, whereas the looks are affected by many other things that go on on the inside.

And btw, I have a folder on pinterest just with older women who embraced the grey hair and made it in a way that doesn’t feel old, but really stylish:D

    • siri says:

That was exactly my thought: instead of talking about not having (outside) procedures, he might consider what actually truly makes us look older, or what prevents that. But I don’t think he wanted to really discuss the matter, he probably just got the memo people find him ‘older looking’, and I have no doubt it concerns him. And he picked a woman 17 years his junior, so he must have SOME issues with aging.

      • sofia says:

What astonishes me with this conversation about aging with the looks perspective is that it seems no one is worthy of love when they are old, like really old. F*ck, if my partner can’t deal with my natural aging will he take care of me when I’m totally wrinkled and have trouble climbing stairs? Will he help me when I’m in pain or sick?Aging is usually just talked in terms of looks, it’s so annoying. Elders face so many issues no one talks about, it’s like they should hide themselves. I’m rambling, I’m sorry ^_^

      • lisa2 says:

@sofia you are saying the truth. Just show how horrible we treat people as they get older. You are not allowed to age. But everyone forgets everyone is going to age if they are luck. And the comment just show how horrible it is. I don’t know how people in Hollywood handle it. First people get pissed when the do things to try and reverse the aging process; and then the minute they show a wrinkle or sagging skin; it is time to take them out to pasture. Everyone better keep looking in the mirror; because Age is coming for us all

  23. nicole says:

Does anybody think that George wears makeup now when hes in public, posters on the other sites have said that he wears foundation and mascara, this was around the time of his wedding. I always thought George says he never wears makeup even when hes on set filming. I thought sometimes he wore mascara but i dont know he has very long eyelashes for a man. I dont know what to think.

    • Jayna says:

All actors wear makeup on the set of movies and TV and on TV interviews such as late night shoes because of the lighting. He’s always had dark, long eyelashes.

It wouldn’t surprise me that they wear it for red carpest also for the cameras and lighting conditions. I’m not sure.

George was a hunk back in 2009. He has aged. Of course, in six years everybody does. But his tan now is not golden like here. It’s more greyish tan now. His face does look heavier now than here.

      http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/5/57/George_Clooney_66%C3%A8me_Festival_de_Venise_(Mostra)_2.jpg

      • Azurea says:

Wow, he does look amazing in this photo! Poor guy. He does look really unwell.
I womder if something more serious is going on. What causes such a grey complexion? Is he a smoker?

      • lisa2 says:

He is aging the same way as his father. He will have his father’s face. He really is a clone of his father. I saw some pictures of his dad when he was younger and it is George. Not the ER early years George.. but the George of 2003 and so on.

  24. FLORC says:

Well, you can TRY all you like, but it often appears like something isn’t correct to the observer. Unless, ofcourse it’s really good work.

Yes, age naturally. Hair dye is a must for some, but it always gives me a small giggle when the roots show. You can’t outrun nature.

And Agree with aboves. Amal does always seek out the lense and look starry eyed. There never really appears (in photos) to be affection between them. And any news (leaked) is only how smart Amal is and she can style and dress herself.

  25. Guesto says:

That face, imo, is the result of decades of hard boozing and trying to maintain his ‘king of Hollywood’ status. He’s lost the plot and only he can’t seem to see that.

If he knocked the boozing on the head and stopped trying so hard to be all things to all people (I’m sure the two things are related), he’d probably look a whole lot better and be a whole lot happier.

Genuine contentment has a face and it’s most definitely not the grey, haggard and often quite petulant one he’s been wearing for the past couple of years.

    • siri says:

You couldn’t be more right. He’s the crowd pleaser, and that crowd seems to include everyone. In many ways, he never grew up. Or found himself (I know how that sounds). There’s so much insecurity going on, it’s painful to watch sometimes. The alcohol definitely plays a big part, and it seems to me, he’s always acting somehow. And I still wonder about his relationship with his father…oh well…he’s 54.

  26. Penelope says:

George is still very handsome imo but he does look tired. As someone upthread mentioned, a little light refreshing of his famous face would do wonders.

And I recently read in some “How NOT to Look Old” list somewhere online that wearing grey ages you. So Hautie, you may actually be onto something. 🙂

  27. Nimbolicious says:

He doesn’t appear to me to be at all content. Regardless of the aging process, a person can look healthy and happy, and this guy doesn’t. I continue to believe that half of it is the boozing, which is no friend to people with chronic inflammation (which he probably has due to his long-term back issues). I think the other half is the inordinate effort he’s putting into selling us this picture of Personal Excellence &Marital Bliss. The more he yaps, the lower the believability, and the more drained he looks.

He’s starting to remind me of a used car salesman: “She’s the best make and model ever made! Pedigreed all the way! Sure, she doesn’t cook or watch sports, but she uses big words and gets people out of jail! And she picks out her own clothes! Take her out for a spin, you won’t be disappointed!”

Oy, there’s a reason that none of those guys ever seem to look too good……

    • siri says:

You would think that someone with his status in HW (but perhaps it isn’t that great anymore after all) would be more relaxed by now. But George always had some theories about success in HW in correlation to getting older, so I think he’s far too occupied by the fear of loosing his influence. In essence, he’s very insecure, and that makes him restless. He just simply doesn’t want to disappear, and enjoy his wealth. Instead, he puts on this huge show with Amal, and, next to alcohol, this obviously is very draining. “The show must go on!”- that’s his mantra. It’s not a very intelligent, or healthy one.

  28. Evie says:

I don’t know if it’s chronic back pain, the natural aging process or just standing next to Amal who’s nearly 20 years younger, but George Clooney seems suddenly very old looking to me like he’s aged 10 years in the last 2 years. And he looks tired as well. It’s not the gray hair or the clothing either. Lots of men — and women — look terrific with gray or white hair e.g. Cary Grant, John Forsythe and Richard Gere. Clooney just looks tired and craggy.

    • Christin says:

He doesn’t genuinely smile (at least in most of the photos that are shown lately). Maybe a little half-hearted grin, but that’s it. And that may be adding to his drooping face look. My thoughts are stress, years of alcohol and possibly meds.

  29. Cam says:

He’s aged 5 years physically since he took on this project to become the greatest HW celeb/activist crossover public figure in history. Compare these pics with even those around the time of their for-the-plebeians Venice extravaganza. I think this is a man who looks like he’s bitten off more than he can chew. I will continue watching with great interest. Will George run? Will Amal get her Vogue cover? Will there be a baby produced in the royal glow of this self-proclaimed modern royalty couple?

  30. EN says:

I read somewhere that George has chronic pain? Pain will age a person like nothing else. Plastics surgery can’t really help it.

  31. Guest says:

He looks just as good as his wife. That woman is not pretty at all.

  32. Ravensdaughter says:

Chronic pain-especially back pain-WILL age you. I have chronic back pain starting with horse training misadventures through years of standing up at work and finally “consolidated” from acute pain episodes to chronic pain because I had to scoop up my plump little sons-now 13 and 15-all the time when they were little.

I have kept ahead-or behind?- of the looking old game at 51, but without effort on my part to combat my back pain with exercise and physical therapy-I also take a long acting anti-inflammatory every day-I will start to look as old as I feel.

Holy s–t! The torture scene in “Syriana” that caused the original back injury made my hair stand on end! I already knew that he was injured by that scene, but oh my-he must have really been injured. I remember him talking recently about the fact that he considered suicide in the weeks after the injury because of the intensity of the pain.

I’m on the side of wishing him well in body and mind. Clooney has paid his dues; maybe now he can kick back a bit and watch his amazingly talented wife shine in her profession.

I dont buy what George is selling and I have come to believe that he is either not bright or spitting out phrases gotten from PR. He says amal is a hman rights lawyer but doesnt seem to grasp that it all depends on which humans
She represents and a few of them are human rights violators themselves but assuming that the dumb public will just thinkof the catch phrase and see how substantial a person he s because he married someone who is a humanitarian.

I always had a great respect for George Clooney, but I’m beginning to think you are right. Amal had some publicity before she met George – as the ‘hottest female barrister’. My feeling is that George picked up on that and the brilliant human rights barrister label but did not pay attention to the details – like who she has represented.
This came back to bite him when she was selected for the UN war crimes panel for Gaza. Remember that? She initially accepted to worldwide publicity but the next day turned it down because she was ‘too busy’. This to me smacked of George and his handlers suddenly realising that the consequences of her work and political controversies could really affect his standing. Perhaps he had not really bothered with the details beforehand.
Her statement turning down the work also referred to ‘occupied Gaza’, which is currently not occupied and suggested that Israel had committed war crimes. Not great for a lawyer that was supposed to come to the table with an unbiased view.
So I think George is either not very bright or simply did not realise the political ramifications of her views, work and people she has represented. If he wanted a political career in the US, she is simply a liability. The political press will simply have a field day.
My guess is that after the Venice wedding and subsequent publicity that George just cannot pull out of the marriage and that Amal has the upper hand and knows it, which is why he is giving in to her every demand – publicity, outrageously expensive fashion, trips to the film set, walk on parts for her immediate and extended family, even to the detriment of his own image and bank ability .
She does not come across as warm or caring but simply as a selfish woman interested only in her own ambition. A lady Macbeth but this time not helping her husband’s career.
No wonder Geoge looks old! And who can blame him if he is seeking solace in tequila.

Wow! I can stop writing now;-) I really believe George and his ‘handlers’ kind of picked her because of that hottest barrister thing (which went unnoticed by the general public). They needed to find someone who, at close to the 40, didn’t have much prior ‘love life’. And yes, they weren’t smart enough to look into the details of her resume, or simply didn’t think the public would check it out later. He feels trapped, and that’s how he looks most of the time. Drained, greyish, tired, and not overly comfortable. I also believe she clashes with characters like the Gerbers- another factor that could, in the long run, make George upset. He didn’t thank his parents when he got the award at the GG- very unusual for George. And we didn’t see HIS, but only HER family since the wedding. Loads of them, everywhere;-) The only disagreement I have concerns the tequila- this would ruin what’s left of his health for good.
