Michael Fassbender steps out in NYC: will he do an Oscar campaign this year?

I was surprised by the general lack of interest in Michael Fassbender at Cannes, then I was equally surprised by the crazy interest in coverage of Michael’s latest girlfriend, Alicia Vikander. So let’s see how we do today. Michael has returned from his working vacation in France and Monaco and he was photographed in New York on Thursday, leaving what looks like a hotel? He doesn’t own an apartment in New York as far as I know, he just has a full-time place in London. But… Michael and Alicia have been spending a lot of time in New York over the past few months. Hm.

In the Alicia Vikander post earlier this week, there was a lot of arguing over just how thirsty she is and just how Michael is going to handle it. As some of you correctly noted, my major Fass-crush sort of died a few years back, when Fassy acted pissy about campaigning for an Oscar, then at some point he had a fling with Madalina Ghenea, which I still don’t understand. All in all, I still like him and I still enjoy looking at photos of his ginger beard, but he’s not really one of my top guys these days. With that perspective, it will be interesting to see if his new girlfriend helps him “play the game” a different way. Because even if you don’t believe Alicia is parched, you should definitely believe that she’s down for playing whatever game she needs to play to get more attention and bigger parts.

Michael has two potential roles that could get him in the Oscar conversation this year – Steve Jobs and Macbeth. As I’ve said, I don’t believe The Light Between Oceans will be any kind of contender simply because the book was absolutely terrible. Even if Michael, Alicia and Rachel Weisz are all wonderful in the film, the actual story will ruin everything. So, if Michael has two potential lead projects which could be awards contenders, will he play the game this year? Will Alicia help him play the game?

  1. PHD Gossip says:

What exactly does play the game mean? Pretend romance?

    • Abbott says:

See: The Great Cumberbatch Crusade 2015.

      • PHD Gossip says:

As I recall, didn’t that fail spectacularly?

      • Abbott says:

Indeed. Much to all our entertainment. He played and lost. In the game of thrones you either win or you die. Or something.

      • ell says:

i love neither, but fassbender is a much better actor than BC whom I find rather flat. fassbender on the other side gave some performances that blew my mind. his gf does seem super thirsty for success, and while it’s good to have ambition, I find her so bland and not that great an actress either so it’s not working for me.

      • NUTBALLS says:

I doubt The Batch was ever seriously considered for any award with TIG. But he certainly made for entertaining headlines with his weird behavior brought on by the unintentional fertilization.

On a totally shallow note, I can’t unsee the short legs that Sixer pointed out. I need some PuddleTom snaps to counterbalance this.

    • icerose says:

He got very good reviews from the Cannes critics even if he did not win anything there .Apart from the dissapointing Jane Ayre I have been impressed with his work in Shame and 12 years but I cannot see him going full Oscar tilt.
i think they have cut the script quite severely which could work against them but it was praised for its acting and the way it had been transferred to the film

  2. Abbott says:

His getting all Bad Blood with the Academy over Shame just proves he wants an Oscar. Academy will probably make him grovel before giving it to him.

My money is on Jake vs JGL this year (with Depp as the embarrassing campaigner).

    • Lilacflowers says:

They’ll make him go through several nomination cycles before they finally give him one. Jake is definitely going to be in the running this year and some voters will feel bad for leaving him out last year. This would be Depp’s fourth nomination so it will be up to the AMPAS to decide whether they’ve made him grovel enough.

    • Mispronounced Name Dropper says:

There should be an award for most embarrassing campaigner. Maybe the Razzies could incorporate it into their awards ceremony?

  3. nic says:

He’s gorgeous and keeps getting better, can’t wait to see Macbeth.

  4. LadyMTL says:

I know Fassy is a big F1 fan and next weekend is the Grand Prix here in Montreal…dare I dream that we might be sharing the same space? (Okay, we’ll be on the same island but let me have my fantasy).

As far as his campaigning goes, I’m not sure that Vikander will make any big difference to how or if he changes anything. He’s never struck me as the type to care all that much, tbh.

  5. VR says:

Well having a girlfriend won’t get anyone an Pscar ever. What you means will he do a full Jared Leto this? I doubt it. Could he win something without it? Yes, it’s been done before, sometimes the acting speaks for itself. Nevertheless I hope he doesn’t come close to pulling a Leto, he doesn’t have what it takes to truly do it.

    • Lilacflowers says:

Just so long as he doesn’t go Full Batch, but I doubt he ever would.

  6. Addison says:

He doesn’t care about awards so… And if he’s in the thick of filming he will pay even less attention.

  7. Mia4S says:

    He’s so hot.

    Sorry that’s all I’ve got.

    • TracySmiles says:

Agreed. I don’t care what he does about awards as long as he looks this good.

  8. Abigail says:

I’m not sure Fass will ever lower himself to the kind of campaigning it apparently takes (example: Jared Leto).
I also doubt that Weinstein orchestrated the BC publicity fail–Weinstein is supposed to be good at these things. I think BC’s personal life, if anything, intruded on the Oscar campaign in a way that did not need to be embarrassing, except that BC was so obviously embarrassed about it.
Fassbender is one of the best actors around, and he has been very honest about wanting an oscar. What he doesn’t seem to want to do is grovel for one; and if he ever tries to go that route, he won’t be very good at it.

    • Lilacflowers says:

The expression of shock and disgust on BC’s face when he lost the Golden Globe to Eddie Redmayne probably didn’t help him either. It showed he clearly expected to win and was a sore loser from the start. Being able to act happy for the winner is part of the game and BC failed that miserably and SAG and AMPAS voters take that into consideration.

      • Kate says:

Nah, don’t think he expected to win at all. You can either go fake happy or expressionless, which is what he tried. Voters don’t care unless you’re trashing other nominees in public.

Shock and disgust is more like Sam Jackson’s face when he lost to Martin Landau.

      • Lil says:

        +1

Dude always looks like his face is steel if he’s nommed, I saw a gifset of that once lol.

Eddie Murphy was the worst I ever saw, super pissed and literally stormed out right after.

Not sure what Fassbender will do this time. He did go full throttle for Shame.

      • Saks says:

Or David O’Russell face when Jennifer Lawrence lost to Emmanuelle Riva at the BAFTA’s, that face was so awful

  9. als says:

Jared Leto led a campaign in which he clearly stated that he wanted the Oscar. He also promoted his character and his movie with pride during the campaign. Most importantly, because this seems to be the issue nowadays, he did it all without a fiancee, a pregnant girlfriend or Alicia Vikander. That means he is also a man with BALLS (and I don’t particularly like Leto). Even George Clooney hired women for his campaigns.
Fassbender is a good actor and he will get an Oscar I am sure of it but if he becomes a renewed man with this desperate actress that was so smug in the pics from Monaco, he will show his true colors – he is a great actor and a man with no balls. It happens.

  10. Fiona says:

Michael was not flirting with Madalina Ghenea … yes they talked but from the video he was not so interested in her

  11. renee28 says:

He’ll campaign. He’s the titular character in Steve Jobs. He won’t be able to avoid it. If he’s nominated for Macbeth, which I doubt, there’s no way in hell Weinstein will let him off the hook.

  12. Kassie says:

He’ll campaign all right – himself and Alicia. She at least is honest about her ambition.

  13. Pinky says:

All I got from this is that he still reads a newspaper.

  14. Kiki says:

I think that Michael Fassbender is between a rock and hard place at this time. Harvey Weinstein is ferociously at his best to make this movie to work and make Swedish Twinkle toes the star of his show. I believe that Michael Fassbender career is on the rise and will be for very long period of time. Will he win an Oscar one day? Yes he will, may be next year or the near future, either way I am still proud of him. Alicia Vikander will be famous in her native country for a long time. Because Hollywood is so sexist and male self-centered that it left a bitter sweet taste in everyone’s mouth. I thinks she is very good actress and she is very ambitious but too much ambition is going to lead into destruction and can see now why people say she is pretty. She needs to stop kissing Harvey Weinstein ass and start making more of career for herself by finding lead roles to challenger herself as a great actress.

    • K. says:

Weinstein is ferociouly at his best for Macbeth? Is this a joke?1-He even fails to mention it among his movies, because he’s smart. He knows perfectly well that Macbeth will not go anywhere with the Academy’s tastes. 2-Gyllenhaal is his boy for this awards season.
Fassbender’s only “hope” to get nominated is Universal’s Steve Jobs .
Weinstein is only behind one of her movies but Vikander will be probably the star of The Danish Girl with Redmayne, very oscar- thirsty too.Weinstein isn’t behind The Danish Girl.I think also that people are overblowing her “I want to be more known” thing.

  15. Sunny says:

This glorious ginger is wonderful to look at, but he is losing me with his stream of young looking younger women – it grosses me out.

He’ll get farther playing the charming cad than the loyal boyfriend IMO.

    • K. says:

This is not accurate. Zoe Kravitz aside, I can’t recall other exes being young looking His last ex looked way older than her age,she was not young looking.Fassbender has also dated older women, even with children. Beharie was perfect for him,age-wise.

      • I Choose Me says:

Yup. Contrary to the picture that’s been painted (a lot of it being projection) Fassy seems to like all types.

  16. Lola says:

I’m liking the jacket and the tote (I hope that is how you spell it), although for my taste both would be in red, bright red.

Does anyone know if he has been interviewed and asked flat out what are the three things that he wants out of life, and what are the three things that he needs in life?

PS. With the wording, for some reason, I have the song by Kansas “Play that Game Tonight” stuck in my head now….

  17. Maria says:

He looks good and I adore him as an actor.

The games, I’m not find of, but it’s Hollywood so it happens…

    I wish him well.

  18. Peach says:

Fassy will get the Oscar one day. Look how long Pacino had to wait. I’m not sure how far he’s willing to go but can’t knock him for playing the game a bit. They all do. It’s called show BUISNESS. Until that day I’m just going to enjoy his films and that beautiful face. 😉

  19. K. says:

One day he will get one. This year Steve Jobs is is best chance, but I don’t think he will campaign so much for it.I’m sure, if the movie is very good,Sorkin and Boyle will oblige him to do something, but Fassbender has also to film Assassin’s Creed in the next months.IMO his interview was largely misquoted. He explained very well what he meant when he was interviewed with McAvoy. He’s pleased if he’s recognized but it’s not important at all if he can spend that time to work on other movies. He never said that oscars are a travesty.

  20. Nicky says:

Fassbender wants an Oscar. He campaigned like hell with Shame, got snubbed and then he didn’t do anything in 2014, got a nod and lost to a guy who campaigned a lot. Vikander will do anything for a nod, she let this clear already. Weinstein is promoting them as the new hot couple, they’re both campaigning. Fassy wants an Oscar and he’ll campaign with his hot gff later this year, no doubt! I hope both don’t get snubbed, it would be sad LOL he just says he doesn’t play the game but he’s been doing many PDAs recently, casting her in his new film…he’s back guys!

    • anon says:

I don’t mind him campaining this year but when I heard that he is casting his gf I wanted to throw up in my mouth lol

  21. Mice says:

Of course he wil campaign, he’s already dating an “it” girl, walking around NYC, Cannes and Monaco with her, casting her in his new film. I just hope he doesn’t make a mistake of marrying her during awards season LOL
