Michael Fassbender & Marion in the first ‘Macbeth’ trailer: amazing or blah?

GAH! I still can’t get over all of the hotness in these photos from Cannes. All of the photos in this post are from the Cannes photocall for Macbeth several weeks ago. Michael Fassbender and Marion Cotillard posed affectionately throughout. He looked hungover and gingery and she looked pristine and lovely. Together they would make French-speaking ginger babies. Was it ever on? Let me believe that it was on at some point. You might want to believe it too, especially after you watch this really, really good first trailer for Macbeth:

The single tear rolling down his cheek when she tells him “what’s done is done”? Yeah. I’m going to have to see this. I thought that the makeup and costume work would detract from the story, but seeing this… no, the aesthetics make it better. I’m loving the guyliner on Macbeth and Lady Macbeth’s blue eyeshadow and her hair are all working for me.

There’s been some discussion about Fassy maybe getting another Oscar nomination this year and whether he would deign to actually campaign and openly “want” it. I don’t know. I think if he was playful, engaged and “open” like he was during his failed Oscar campaign for Shame, he could have a good shot at another nomination for Macbeth or maybe for Jobs, which also comes out during the traditional fall-winter awards season. Here’s why I think Fassy will play the game a bit more this year: his girlfriend, Alicia Vikander.

    her face is exquisite

  2. A. Key says:

    Boring as fck

    • Don't kill me I'm French says:

I know That the british and US journalists really loved the movie at Cannes fest but the Europeans other journalists were so so on the movie ” nothing of new”

      • nora says:

I read that the organizers had chosen to broadcast the film on the last day for Marion Cotillard have taken the best of the french actress but critics found the movie rather commonplace

  3. Maya says:

God this looks amazing – I love michael and Marion and cannot wait to see their amazing acting talents put together.

People can just have amazing chemistry together – it doesn’t mean that they are into each other or have had/having affairs…

  4. t.fanty says:

Meh. I always think that Macbeth works best when it moves a little more quickly. This looks like it is very aware of its status as Art.

    • manda says:

check out Scotland, PA! A modernized retelling of Macbeth where “Mac” works at a fast food place in the 1970’s, and kills his boss at the urging of his wife. The scenes with the witches are worth it all by themselves

    • Sixer says:

Aww. Harsh, missy? I thought it looked alright, if we must have bang-y, crash-y, film adaptations. Or are you expecting Braveheart but with a good script?! I think it’ll be better’n that.

PS: Pft, Scotland PA. Macbeth on the Estate!

      • t.fanty says:

I flipping LOVE Macbeth on the Estate. There’s also an Aussie version with Sam Worthington that is surprisingly good.

Worst Macbeth I ever saw was Roger Allam, which should be self-explanatory. The witches had beards, and nobody in the audience could stop giggling at them.

      • icerose says:

Cannes reviews said text had been cut to allow for a more cinematographic film and it worked really well- Three UK TV version with Eamon Andrews on a UK estate but I di like watching full text versions as well.

  5. Lilacflowers says:

I’m ambivalent about this movie. If it is awards contention, I’ll see it in the theater. If not, I’ll wait for it on Netflix.

Saw Slow West this weekend. Fassy has a beautiful back and, added bonus, The Hound!

  6. EN says:

I like them separately as actors, but I think Marion is wrong for this movie and I actually don’t feel the chemistry between them. They are acting love and chemistry and doing it very well, but what do they say in the method “I don’t believe it !”. That is how I feel.

  7. Mia4S says:

This looks fantastic and the reviews are fantastic and…it doesn’t have a North American release date yet! Gah!

We’re not too dumb to appreciate Shakespeare!….OK many of us are not too dumb to appreciate Shakespeare!

Hey Harvey Weinstein; stop fellating that Gyllenhaal boxing movie (which looks generic and melodramatic) for five minutes and get me my Thane!!

    • Abigail says:

^^^This! Macbeth has gotten some really exceptional reviews, and yet Weinstein hasn’t picked it as his “oscar” movie so it will likely get dumped in February. Can we blame Fassbender for having contempt for this kind of Oscar-driven nonsense?

      • Kiki says:

I agree with you. Now you see my dislike for Harvey Weinstein.

      • Isadora says:

This might be a good thing – lately Weinstein’s Oscar campaigns consisted basically of oversaturation and more oversaturation. As much as I love Fassy, I’d rather not see him EVERYWHERE to the point where I’m not interested anymore.

    • icerose says:

Weinstein the scavenger is now trying to buy the rights to the Danish TV series to make it into an UK film

  8. Saks says:

My favourite Macbeth is Verdi’s opera, and I was very interested in this adaptation but it looks kind of meh. I’ll watch it as I like the actors but I’m not expecting that much of it now

  9. Claire says:

I cannot take my eyes out of Marion. She’s getting better with age, right? I’m looking forward to this movie. She is undoubtedly one of the most talented performers nowadays. Alicia, the girl from the other post, should shut up a little and learn from her who is nothing but humble.

    • Lucy2 says:

I agree she’s getting better and better, and she started off pretty good! There is something about her performance, that you just can’t look away.

  10. Lola says:

Not watching it, regardless of the actors that are in it. English is not my native tongue, all Shakespeare brings back are not so good childhood memories, when we were made to read the work in it’s original and the teacher making very sure that the majority of the questions on the exam where NOT on the Cliff Notes … sorry… not happening, regardless of the trailer.

  11. Isadora says:

This looks very promising and visually stunning – will definitely see it! Interesting concept, I’m curious if I will like it. Regardless, it will be major eye candy, Fassy looks sooo good as battle worn Macbeth and the intensity he brings to this role works for me.

  12. Camille (The Original) says:

I’m so going to watch this. They make quite the hot couple.

  13. Jesse says:

One thing is a fact: Michael has more chemistry with Marion in this photocall than in all the times he was seen with Alicia, including their staged kisses in NY and Monaco. This PR couple is talented on screen but in real life they’re just terrible actors. TERRIBLE. Fassbender is as convincing as his role in Jane Eyre LOL

    • noah says:

In Monaco they didn’t kiss.. lol

      • anon says:

Well, they were posing together. That’s kinda the same thing 😛

      • Jesse says:

true but they POSED, which is something big hahaha on Macbeth’s trailer sparks fly all over it but in reality, Michael has NO spark with his gff. He behaves as David in Prometheus, a robot.

    • noah says:

      Something very big… Ahahah!!

      • Jesse says:

Very indeed, thanks for recognizing it! hahaha But as soon as Alicia gets her nod Fassbender will replace her by another actress or model who looks like his daughter. Men like him don’t have a capacity of dating an older and mature woman anyway =)

  14. Lola says:

Want to check this info … read (elsewhere) that you if have a Google Alert for Michael Fassbender, you are getting news alerts about his GF … blew me away … if you don’t subscribe for a google alert for someone, you should not get google alerts about that person … if true, really NOT cool! Is this a common thing though?

    • Olivia says:

It is common! most of the articles/interviews about Alicia nowadays are mentioning Michael, so if you have a Google Alert for him, it’s a sure thing that you will receive news about her on your email everyday, instead of news about him.

      • Lola says:

Thank you for clearing this. Still sucks though for the people with the google alerts. No wonder people are like, “what is this!”
