Angelina Jolie: ‘You still won’t be cool to your children no matter what you do’

FFN_BJST_Jolie_Pitt_060615_51765838

It feels weird to say this, but if Zahara Jolie-Pitt had a style blog, I would read it. I would aim to dress more like a 10-year-old, if that 10-year-old is specifically Zahara Jolie-Pitt. These are photos of the entire Jolie-Pitt clan at LAX yesterday, Saturday. We haven’t had photos of the entire family together in a while. It’s been months, I’m pretty sure. Usually it’s just one parent traveling with no more than three kids. Usually Vivienne and Knox are sort of the odd kids out, probably because they’re the youngest and they might not be interested in whatever the big kids are doing. But I guess the whole family has picked up to go… somewhere.

What else is there to say? Shiloh’s haircut reminds me of both ‘90s skater boys and Kristen Stewart’s current hair. It’s cute as hell! Zahara is ON POINT, as always, rocking a vintage Batman t-shirt, leggings and brown ankle boots with neon laces (so fresh). Vivienne looks a little bit unkempt, like she just woke up from a nap. Knox holding Zahara’s hand? Adorable. Pax looks like he’s trying to avoid the paparazzi. Maddox is a teenager now, so he obviously thinks this big family outing is ridiculously uncool (GAWD, MOM, YOU DO NOT UNDERSTAND!!).

Incidentally, during her Q&A with Domhnall Gleeson for the current issue of Interview Magazine, Angelina was telling him how cool it is that he’s done a Star Wars movie, and one day he’ll be able to show it to his children, but “You still won’t be cool to your children no matter what you do. But the Star Wars movies always have these beautiful messages and they are quite profound. And you will have this thing where, wherever you go in the world, you will be an artist and familiar to them.” Angelina’s kids will never think their mom is cool. EVER.

  1. Kiddo says:

You’re not ‘cool’ with your kids while they are little, When they become adults, they may change their minds.

    • Jegede says:

My mum always made a point to tell me that she is not, and would never be – a “cool mum”.

    • Sixer says:

That might be true! I think my parents are/were cool. I just asked Sixlet Minor if I am cool.

“No, Mum, you are not cool. Is there any lunch or have I got to make a sandwich?”

As ever, his priority is his stomach. As, I suppose, it should be.

    • Goats on the Roof says:

My mom and I were always fairly close, but I never considered her ‘cool’ until I was about 22 or so. Now I’m happy to tell anyone who will listen about my amazing mama! I’d imagine that’s fairly normal, though. Once people are a bit older, removed from the home and their parents’ rule-making, and have a bit of life experience they can appreciate their parents as people more.

    • Belle Epoch says:

KIDDO I’m still waiting. I think I’ll be dead first.

My daughter said, “I never realized your earrings were weird until I got to college.” That’s the best I got.

  2. Esmom says:

The kids as always are adorable. Shiloh looks more like Brad than ever to me. I know she also has some of Angelina’s features but something about her facial expressions scream Brad.

Anyway, I feel AJ’s pain about her kids not thinking she’s cool. But seriously, if Angelina Jolie isn’t cool in her kids’ eyes then what hope is there for the rest of us? 🙂

    • Denisemich says:

I think Shiloh looks exactly like a young Jon Voight.

      • Esmom says:

Yes I see that too. As I said, sometimes it’s the facial expressions. My son looks nothing like my dad, he looks just like my husband’s dad, but he used to make certain faces where he’d resemble my dad so much.

      • Becks says:

Yup. Shiloh is the spitting image of grandfather.

    • Virgilia Coriolanus says:

I think my parents are mostly cool now….but when I was at their ages, God no! I stayed in my room unless there was food.

    • Bread and Circuses says:

I had that reaction when Zoe Kravitz said she used to be excruciatingly embarrassed when Lenny Kravitz would pick her up from school driving a sports car and wearing a mesh shirt and sunglasses.

Because Lenny is the epitome of cool. If he can’t pull it off in his kid’s eyes, then none of us can. 😀

  3. Mispronounced Name Dropper says:

True. I just have to settle for being cool to everyone who posts on Celebitchy.

  4. Luca76 says:

Each kid is so cute and they keep getting bigger!!

  5. nene says:

I don’t know about you guys but IT’S COOL how these kids dress like normal kids and not poster kids for fashion or walking advertisement for designer labels.

    • Jen43 says:

Yes. Their parents let them be kids.

    • ncboudicca says:

agreed, you know they’re picking out their own clothes and their parents are okay with that!

    • Virgilia Coriolanus says:

Or not in all white, designer clothes like Kelly Rutherford dresses her kids. So creepy. This is the biggest reason why I don’t think the JP’s are broke……their kids wear “normal” clothes. They aren’t spending money on the latest fads, every single time something new comes out. Sure they have nice, maybe designer clothes for special occasions, but on normal days they look like normal kids.

    • Mila says:

i agree and while i dont like their constant pap walks the same applies to the Garner Brood.

      • pk says:

Goopy also dresses her kids pretty normal.

      • Colette says:

Constant pap walks? I hope you are joking.Besides the pics at the soccer game and the kids at Kid’s Choice Awards this family hasn’t been really seen this year.We hardly ever see this family except at the airport.

      • Mintessence (the original Minty) says:

        @Colette:
Mila was referring to the Garner family’s pap walks, not Angelina & Co.

      • mayamae says:

@Colette, I think it’s fairly obvious she was referring to the Garner children.

      • lisa2 says:

I had to read that post again because I thought the same. It is just the order of how the comment is worded.

  6. aims says:

The Joile/Pitt clan look so happy.

It’s true about your kids thinking you’re a dork. I picked up my son from school a week ago. He’s in high school, he walk about two feet behind me, like he didn’t know who I was !! What a jackass, lol!!! Oh well, maybe in a few years he’ll acknowledge me again.

    • Dirty Martini says:

Mine just graduated from college and will turn 22 this summer. I’m still waiting to be acknowledged.

      Sorry.

      • Solanaceae (Nighty) says:

Dirty Martini, wait, in time he’ll acknowledge you… hopefully… after he starts working, he’ll change…

Looking back, I always acknowledged my parents, though mum drove me crazy sometimes…At university, when they visited me, I’d make sure we’d all go for a walk around town, holding my mum’s arm…

      • siri says:

I agree with @Solanaceae (Nighty), when they start having their life away from you, and work, it’s gonna change…slowly, but steadily;-)

    • Virgilia Coriolanus says:

Lol! I remember in 9th grade…the summer before, we had to go to an orientation. And me and my twin were SO embarrassed over our dad……we just went right in and tried to get as far away as possible. But to be fair, he was in that phase where he dressed like Steve Jobs–WHITE TURTLENECKS (no matter the weather) with jeans. Everywhere.

      • Lucky Charm says:

I remember when I was with my mom running errands and she stopped at K-Mart. I was so embarrassed because I thought that was so uncool, I refused to get out of the car. I didn’t want any of my friends seeing me there with my mom, and she said the only way that would happen is if they were there, too. I still stayed in the car, lol. My mom was not cool at all until I had kids, funny how that happens.

  7. Catelina says:

I think Angelina also said in that Gleeson interview that they were gonna be in Europe for most of June, didn’t she? Maybe they’re going to Miraval. It must be gorgeous there right now. It’s fun seeing all the kids dressed in their own unique styles.

    • Emma - the JP Lover says:

      @Catelina …

That’s probably why Brad flew to France by himself a month or so ago. It seems to be the pattern: Brad flies to France, then the whole family migrates there several weeks later. He must go ahead to pre for his family’s arrival at Miraval, to make sure the house is aired and food deliveries and such are scheduled (but probably more importantly, to make sure all alternate blankets, games, and toys are in place). 🙂

It’s about time, too. I can’t remember the last time the Jolie-Pitt clan were State-side this long. They haven’t been to Miraval all together since the surprise wedding last August.

      • lisa2 says:

According to Mr. Perrin that they do the wine with. Brad makes trips to France each month or so.. They have a business that he is very hands on with that is run in France. So he has to go there to see how things are running and know what is going on. Mr. Perrin has said this in interviews. The last time we saw Brad going to France it was just before Angie found out about the possible health issue. So he left early and came back to be with his wife.

I’m sure when he makes those trips he does get the house ready. But I’m sure they have a staff there to keep things running and security.

      • Sea Dragon says:

Wouldn’t you think they have people to do that for them?

    • Maya says:

I think I also read somewhere that Angelina is going to do a segment with her good friend Jane Goodall…

      • lisa2 says:

I think that is in December. I’ll have to find the article to be sure. The Director or can’t recall his position. Talked about Angie and Jane doing something when he was interviewed for 50 minutes.. Which go so much WRONG on their show. They said the JPs had been spotted in France earlier in the week.. But NOPE because the family obviously just left LA. I hate when shows like that repeat tabloid stories/rumors.

  8. Azurea says:

I guess I’m lucky! My daughter has always thought I’m cool. Her dad, too. (We lost him when she was 19, to leukemia.) Hey, we’ve had a few moments, but truly only a few. She’s been a blessing to us both. 💗

  9. harlequin says:

Beautiful family. I love how effortlessly cool they all look – especially Shiloh. What a stunning little girl.

  10. Mendy says:

    Man, I want Angelina’s skin!!!!

    • lisa2 says:

I wish someone ask her about her skincare routine. Her skin is so milky. Like you want to touch it. I remember reading an interview where the interviewer talked about her skin…saying it looked wet; moist.. crazy.

Last laugh to the people that always make fun of her wearing those big hat.

      • Regina Phelange says:

It’s lovely but honestly she is just going to say what all celebrities say, lots of water, sunscreen, I just wash it with plain soap and water! when in reality they all do peels, lasers and stuff. I do them too, no big deal but let’s not pretend she has some secret cream she’s going to spill the beans on that is making her skin look like that.

  11. lisa2 says:

The African Summit starts on June 7th-15th.. she said she would be there.

I can’t get over how gorgeous she looks. Not over done or anything. But some of the pictures I saw were just so Damn.. Brad looks hot.. I don’t get anyone saying he is aging badly. The man is 51 and doesn’t look it.. I love how they support each other. She said she was doing a lot of her humanitarian work this month. he travels with her. That is great.. because sadly some men don’t put their partners interest on the same level as theirs.

it has been a long time since seeing them all together. And the kids are so big. We don’t see them much at all really. Hope we get to see more pics of her at the Summit.. She is very dedicated to her causes.

    • Emma - the JP Lover says:

Yep, and then I bet the whole family is off to Miraval for the rest of the summer.

  12. LadyoftheLoch says:

Age 0 – 7 my daughter thought I was the coolest.
    Age 7 – 14 I was relegated to untouchable dork status….until I bought her a guitar.
Age 15 – 18 I was somewhat cool, somewhat not. Definitely not if I dared to dance along to the radio. “Mom, stahhhhhpp!”
Now that she’s left home, I’m back on the cool stool.

    • Naddie says:

I wonder why people suddenly become bad dancers when they become parents! I’m an adult and I still can’t get over my parents dancing, lol.

      • LadyoftheLoch says:

Lol, I asked my daughter why she hated my dancing so much and she told me it wasn’t so much the actual moves, it was seeing her mother behave in a sexy way that made her scream out loud! I get it. Mothers need to “put it away” when in the company of their offspring.

  13. bettyrose says:

Zahara’s laces are so 80s. High top sneakers with neon laces were IT for us funky girls back then.

  14. Catelina says:

Oh one thing I forgot to say in my first comment, Angelina’s hair looks great this dark, it makes her skin look unreal. Out of the colors she’s had I think this one is my favorite.

    • sigghh says:

Yea the darker hair looks way better

      • lisa2 says:

I saw a picture from the back.. so shiny.. like sable..

They all look great. I guess if they end up in France we won’t see much of them. They do know how to go stealth.

  15. Ginger says:

All of the kids are getting so big! And I do agree with her, 100%. My son who has just turned 13 has told me that he has as much fun hanging out with me as he does with his friends which is nice to hear. On the other hand, when I talk to him about photographing famous people, he looks utterly bored! LOL!

  16. Maya says:

Stunning and happy looking family. You can clearly see the genuine love and closeness this family has with each other.

As someone mentioned above – someone please ask Angelina about her skin secrets. Gorgeously glowing skin which is flawless as well…

PS: every time I see Maddox I feel old. I still remember the pictures of him being a toddler with the Mohawk looking so cute…

PPS: I always thought my mum was the coolest. Although she passed away recently – I still think she was the coolest in the world. Hopefully my children will think that in the future..

  17. Emma - the JP Lover says:

Kaiser wrote: “It feels weird to say this, but if Zahara Jolie-Pitt had a style blog, I would read it. I would aim to dress more like a 10-year-old, if that 10-year-old is specifically Zahara Jolie-Pitt.”

I’m telling you Miss Zee was behind the staging of “The Leg.” 🙂

  18. lenje says:

Can I applaud her younger daughter for consistently successfully inserting some pink in the generally dark/muted colored bunch?

  19. Leslie says:

She is so right. Elizabeth McGovern said her daughters (16 and 18 at the time) were embarrassed that she was on Downton Abbey. I would think kids would be proud of a parent being on any hit show or movie.

  20. Colette says:

I see all the kids are carrying backpacks or large bags except Vivienne (Princess Aurora). She is going to have a fit when she see how her hair looks in these airport pics.(just kidding)
Shiloh’s jacket has a S on it.That’s a nice jacket. Also her hairstyle is similar to Brad’s hair in Seven Years in Tibet.
    I love Pax’s henna tattoos
It’s great seeing the entire family together.
In the video, the kids are pros, none of them were distracted by the paparazzi they just kept moving, stayed focus.

    • lisa2 says:

It is a custom made Jacket.. the designer posted this online. Maybe it was her birthday present.

Such an honor to create a personal custom varsity Jacket for such an awesome stylish lil grown up Shiloh Jolie Pitt #leather #wool #S #jaggedculture
      https://instagram.com/p/3nFf08

    • Carmen says:

Pax has a henna tattoo? I can’t see it.

I’m betting Pax is going to be a chick magnet six or seven years from now. Maddox looks like the brainy one and Pax is going to get all the girls.

  21. sofia says:

I read somewhere they they have nannies all the time, but they never appear on photos? Is that on purpose? is that to prevent damaging the “brand” or is it just a lie and they are really normal and travel with kids by themselves?

    • Catelina says:

Nannies have been spotted in pictures with them before

      • sofia says:

But while travelling? I’ve never seen it. If I remember well I think I read they had 2 nannies per kid, so I thought that when travelling there was a lot of logistics involved but i’ve never really seen it.

      • Colette says:

There are dozens of pics of their nannies/teachers/ bodyguards. Some of them are men.A couple of weeks ago one of the mannies took the twins shopping.I have seen an Asian lady and a Black lady with them when they are traveling.Paparazzi are not going to waste film taking pics of nannies unless they happen to be standing next to the kids. The two nannies per child came from a tabloid. Also one time Brad’s family members were mistaken as nannies when they were on holiday

      • sofia says:

@Colette: that’s actually a good reason for them not to show. But again, when they do it’s no usually the selected photos in blogs and stuff. If someone doesn’t try to find it it’s not really obvious.

    • Paige says:

I’ve seen quite a bit of pics of their kids with nannies. I doubt that they are only hands on parents for the media. All the Jolie-Pitt kids seem pretty close to both their parents. I remember the joy on her girls faces when she won the Kids Choice Awards.

      • sofia says:

Even if they have lots of nannies they seem to be doing something right, ’cause the kids do seem genuinely nice and close to them.

      • hmmm says:

        @MrsBPitt

I wonder most of all whether even one child, born into such privilege, will aim for university.

    • lisa2 says:

Their children are older. I doubt they need the same amount of help they have had in the past. I don’t think Maddox or Pax need a nanny. And when the girls were playing soccer the only adult with them was a bodyguard.

Every parent I know has some form of help. Be it a nanny, Grandparent or daycare. As others have stated there are many pictures of them with their helpers. You can google to see if you need to.
But again their kids are older now; so not surprising they don’t need a lot of help as before.

but my question is why does it matter. Neither Angie nor Brad have ever said they don’t have help. besides pictures are sold based on the celebrity. There could be loads of pictures with the help; but they get cropped out because sites aren’t interested in pictures of people that are not the celebrity.

      • MrsBPitt says:

I thought I read that they had nanny/teachers….that the nanny’s were their teachers! Could be mistaken…anyone remember this?

      • lisa2 says:

They have both.. When Angie did Maleficent she said the Teachers played the adult with the kids.. Zahara was with one of the teachers and Pax with the other. They also had a Male teacher (black man with dreadlocks).. I haven’t seen any of them for some time. but they have not been traveling as much.

I’m not sure who is still working with them. They have bodyguards that usually take the kids out so not sure.

      • supposedtobeworking says:

They have teachers that travel with them – the teachers speak the native language of the kids’ ancestry or place of birth so the kids can stay connected to the country and take up the local foundations that Angie and Brad started when they born.

    • Isabelle says:

Have a friend & the clan used to visit her restaurant all the time & the nannies never showed up with them. She said they were always nice, knew her by name, tipped well. She liked seeing them come in because they were also great tippers. Imagine the nannies/travelers do travel with them. Heck if I had that many kids & the money, would have some nannies/teachers as well .

    • Louise177 says:

After ten years haters are still a complete joke. You would think if they constantly had twelve nannies with them, there would be photos of this after all of this time. I don’t think I’ve ever seen the kids with more than two nannies, even when all six of the kids are there. Part of the reason people claim that Brad and Angelina have so many nannies is that the media claims every adult seen with them is a nanny. You don’t have to try very hard to find out the person is Brad’s brother or a restaurant employee. A couple of years ago Brad’s side of the family went on vacation with them. They were all together so of course the media claimed the family members were their nannies. I’m also baffled that the haters believe they made a deal with all of the world’s media to not have the nannies, at least not all twelve, photographed. Give me a break.

      • lisa2 says:

As I said upthread. Why would media outlets pay to have pics of nannies on their sites or magazines.

I think the reason for the obsession of the “nannies” is to shade them as not being present parents/or hands on parents with their children. I see it all the time..The nannies are raising their kids because Brad/Angie are fake pretend parents. Thehy hide the nannies so people think they are really parenting their children; but are not.
Now you never hear anyone asking where the nannies are of other celebs. But there is just some strange obsession with the idea that if you are a big star you can’t possibly be good parents. You just see this more pointed at Brad/Angie.

      • Louise177 says:

@Lisa: My point is if there were twelve nannies it would be very difficult to keep them out of photos. Nannies are supposed to be with the kids. Cropping photos or trying for close-ups when there could be a few minutes to get shots is a big risk and expense. Random people are in photos but somehow all of their nannies are cut out? Besides the media believes that Brad and Angelina are bad parents. Having photos of twelve nannies would bring in a lot of money. The tabloids are always claiming they have an army of help. It would make sense to pay for photos to backup their story. Yet in all of these years, nothing.

      • Sofia says:

I just asked a question because they have 6 kids and a complicated life! I’m not a hater! I don’t want to offend anyone, but considering the answers (some deleted) I got I come to the conclusion that they are untouchable for some and any question/comment is ALWAYS read has some kind of hate. As I stated before I read about the nannies and seeing the kids all together reminded me of it. I’m not judging and like I stated before they seem happy and balanced. And other celebs probably don’t get so many of these questions because they don’t have as many children and are not so famous.

  22. xboxsucks says:

to JP: better an uncool mom than a crazy mom

  23. lisa2 says:

Thanks for the pics.. so good to see the family all together. Been too long. Good or bad I enjoy seeing pictures of this family.

  24. MrsBPitt says:

All the kids are gorgeous, but I really think Knox is going to be a heartthrob when he grows up! He is the perfect combo of Angelina and Brad!

  25. hmmm says:

I have no children. But I doubt that any mother wants to be cool to her kids. Do they? If so, why?

As for Zahara’s style- really? She’s a kid. Is this an attempt elevate her into the gossip pantheon?

    • Colette says:

Many parents want to be thought of as cool? What’s the opposite of cool, being a dork, nerd, uncool.Wendy Williams was crying on her show because her son didn’t want to hang around her.She felt he didn’t like her as much as his cool dad.Parents are people first, they want to be liked, admired, etc.

      • hmmm says:

Parents want to be admired for what? Being liked, approved of by an underdeveloped brain, or respected for ingraining basic values in their kid?

I also don’t see Wendy Williams as any sort of role model or example. She sounds pathetic and not terribly adult, nor does ‘cool dad’ who I suspect lets his son get away with murder.

      • Colette says:

Plenty of parents want to be thought of as being cool.Everybody isn’t as self actualized and self assured as you.

    • SillySimone says:

Honestly? Because we don’t want to be as old as our kids see us.

  26. kri says:

Well, just in case your kids never tell any of you that you are cool let me assure you that you are! To all of you CB posters with kids (Or fur babies) you are the coolest. Happy Sunday .

  27. Miss M says:

I qas an au pair and the pre-teen did not think I was cool, lol. Now i am in grad school and he is in college and he said he was glad to reconnect on facebook.

  28. LAK says:

Isn’t it their summer break in France time?

  29. SillySimone says:

They are all such seemingly well behaved kids and they are all so pretty. I love this family. I want them to adopt me. Viv is just stunning!

  30. Jib says:

I don’t really follow these people, I don’t know the kids’ names or ages or who is adopted, who was born first, etc., but it is nice that they do seem like normal kids. I really dislike that the press photographs them, though. Mom and Dad are public figures and fair game, but I don’t like the kids being papped. (Now, I feel differently about the royal family, because the public supports them. Yes, they do, they pay for their KP home, renovations, and security. These people support themselves, it is different.)

  31. Naddie says:

I think Angelina is the epitome of cool, but that’s because I don’t see her making silly dances or talking about body functions, like every mom does, haha.
I guess when you’re a real, close to your kids parent, you can’t help being a dork most of the time.

  32. Ravensdaughter says:

Oh, it is so true. My 15 year old ruled me uncool this past school year (9th grade). As for my 13 year old-MY BABY-I can see the side arriving as he goes into 8th grade.
    Sigh……..

  33. MAC says:

to me the photos show a loving family. I like that. Its not manufactured or fake. Seems very real and down to earth to me. Especially the hand holding and sticking by brother and sisters sides.

I also agree with the comment above I do not like the idea of the kids being fair game. Especially when they used to be so young.

Goes for all celebs kids not just this family. I loved the quote about star wars and beautiful messages. I agree.
