Sofia Hellqvist did not go to Princess School, but did receive princess training

Not long now! Sofia Hellqvist will be an official member of the Swedish royal family by the end of the weekend. Sofia will marry Prince Carl Philip tomorrow and we’ll probably (hopefully) have photos posted on Sunday. I’m excited to see her dress! I wonder if she’s gone with a Swedish designer or if she went with a big-name internationally-known fashion designer. I wonder if she’ll do sleeves. I wonder if she’ll get to wear one of the royal family’s lovely tiaras. Yay, royal wedding!

Anyway, Sofia briefly spoke to Hello Magazine ahead of her Saturday wedding. There had been widespread reports that Sofia had undergone some “princess training,” much in the vein of Duchess Kate’s very alleged pre-wedding “princess training.” I still side-eye Kate’s training, because if she had any training, it clearly didn’t stick or it wasn’t as comprehensive as it should have been (Rule #1 of Princess Training: Don’t show the royal biscuit at every opportunity). So, when Sofia spoke to Hello, they asked about this alleged princess training. Her response was… interesting.

While most brides experience a slight flutter of nerves before their big day, Sofia Hellqvist’s vows come with an additional role – that of princess.

“No matter how much you read up on it, it’s hard to compare with real life experience,” says Hellqvist in a new interview appearing in Hello!.

On Thursday, the bride-to-be was spotted alongside other members of the photogenic Swedish royal family at a wedding rehearsal at the Royal Palace in Stockholm, reports Swedish newspaper Expressen. When asked if she attended “Princess School,” the former reality TV star replies, “I don’t know what you mean by princess school, but if it is knowledge and experience about my future as the wife of a prince, then I definitely have.”

All her training will soon come into play as she prepares to wed her fiancé race car-driving Prince Carl Philip of Sweden at the royal palace on on Saturday in a ceremony attended by hundreds and watched by millions. Once married, the 30-year-old’s full title will be HRH Princess Sofia, Duchess of Varmland.

In the interview, the couple talk about wedding planning and how important it was to put a personal stamp on things like music and flowers amongst the pomp and ceremony that come with a royal wedding. “I think it makes us feel safe – that once we’re there, no one else has done it. It’s ours,” reveals Hellqvist.

I’ll give Sofia some credit for something: I think she’s probably hungrier for it than the glossed-over upper-crust girls who usually marry into royal families. Sofia probably did get some kind of princess training and she hopefully hustled her way through it and retained a lot. We’ll see. From waitress to lad-mag-model to reality star to princess. Am I think only who thinks of poor Duchess Kate and how her path was so much harder?

PS… As someone who has guilty-pleasure-watched The Princess Diary movies, I think Princess School is a concept that could easily be made into a movie. The movie would either be a light comedy romp or a very, very dark drama.

So they didn’t formally *call* it Princess School, not a shock there. But a rose is still a rose, no matter what it’s called.

That last image- I take it that is traditional Swedish dress?

  3. Just G says:

The cynic in me sees her on some Real Housewives spin-off in say 3 – 5 years ? o_O

I find this talk of a (soon-to-be) Princess Sofia going to “princess school” very amusing, as my kids sometimes watch the Disney Jr show Sofia the First about a new princess who goes to princess school.

And then I chuckle about the Princess Sophia joke from “How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days.”

She really looks different in various photos and they do not look good. Could it be angle, lighting…I cannot put my finger on it.

  6. roxy750 says:

Lucky gal, she’s very pretty and he is of course the most handsome prince ever!

I find this very interesting, and look forward to seeing how her life as a royal unfolds.

  8. Betti says:

Good luck to them and she hustled for this in the same way Waity did, thou CP is clearly more of a man than Willy is and treated Sophia well and didn’t continually cheat on her at every chance he got.

I think she might surprise us and throw herself quite happily into her public role – it’s something she has aspired to, showing up Waity’s laziness.

    • *North*Star* says:

Except Carl Philip has been publicly called out for HIS laziness in Sweden. He’s certainly not known as being a work horse and so far Sofia hasn’t shown any evidence of that while dating him either.

  9. LAK says:

In other royal family news, Felipe of Spain has un-duchessed his sister. The one embroiled in corruption scandal with her husband. She’s no longer the Duchess of Palma. I guess she remains a princess of Spain due to being a blood prince?

    • Gwendy says:

Cristina was born an Infanta of Spain with the rank of a Princess. But her Ducal title was granted to her when she got married , that’s why it was revocable.
