Amber Heard on her bisexuality: ‘I don’t want to be defined by it’

Amber Heard

Here’s Amber Heard at the UK premiere of Magic Mike XXL. Her dress is Emilio Pucci with ruffles to spare. The color is gorgeous, but the halter neck and all the fussy details make this dress look too fancy for a stripper movie. Amber wants the world to take her seriously, so she wore a serious dress. Johnny Depp didn’t make it to the premiere. He’s still pouting in Australia on the set of Pirate 5, where a capuchin monkey attacked his makeup artist.

Amber has a new interview with the Sunday Times. She talks about the reversed gender roles in this film and why she came out as bisexual:

“At that time I didn’t know of anyone else in my position who was a working female lead actress. I don’t want to have to deny my sexuality in order to be me. But I don’t want to have to be defined by it. I’m fundamentally opposed to trying to edit myself to be palatable or popular. I don’t give a f***. I fight, but I shouldn’t have to.”

Heard also admitted re-writing her lines for Magic Mike to suggest that her character was bisexual and enjoyed the film’s “reversed gender roles.”

“It’s a film about men seeking sexual attention,” she said. “It gives the power position to women. My character’s function has nothing to do with her sexuality.”

[From The Sunday Times via The Independent]

Amber came out in 2010. At the time, the internet acted like it was a huge scandal, but it shouldn’t have been a big deal. Media outlets still make a huge fuss out of it. Countless tabloid stories have referred to Amber as a “bisexual beauty” as if that’s the only way to describe her. The Independent even refers back to Jeremy Clarkson’s intro on Top Gear: “Yes, it’s true, nobody has ever heard of her, but she is bisexual and she likes guns and muscle cars.” He’s so rude.

Does she talk about her role in this movie at all? Or what it was like to work with her co-stars, share some cute on set stories , anything that actually pertains to the movie she’s promoting? Because for someone that claims to like to keep their private life private, she seems to talk about nothing else and I still don’t know what her character in the movie does. Also, all she does is complain in these interviews, she seems like a downer to be around.

    • Jegede says:

For someone who used to stage pap candids in garages and sell them to photogs pre Johnny Depp, and starred in numerous trashy flop flicks as the bombshell, in her quest for the limelight…

She now never seems to STOP complaining about her lot.

    • Shambles says:

Don’t you know? She doesn’t give a f-ck. She’ll gladly tell you how much of a f-ck she doesn’t give. She’s deep, man, so it’s okay if all she wants to talk about is herself. But you, don’t talk about her. Deep. Much Mrs. Depp.

She looks absolutely stunning here, but her personality dims her beauty.

      • quantum entanglement says:

She looks amazing. It’s too bad about her tragic personality and lack of acting skills.

  2. Chinoiserie says:

I have never seen her in any film so I do not know if she can act, but she is so gorgeous. And I love both of her dresses she is wearing here, I think she does kind of similar taste in fashion I do. Maybe the dress is not a right fit for this premiere, but I have heard this film tries to be more serious than a strippar film anyway so whatever.

    • Kiddo says:

I like the red dress on her too, including the ruffles, which I would have hated on a paler dress, since it would have translated as ultradelicate or precious.

    • bns says:

Spoiler alert re: her acting… She sucks.

  3. Debbie says:

Then don’t talk about it. Considering all I knew about you until now was you married Jonny depp I don’t think this was a real concern until you brought it up sweetie.

  4. CM says:

She needn’t worry. She’s not defined by her sexuality – she’s defined by her husband.

On her tombstone: ‘Ratty McScarves’ First Wife. Sometime ‘actress’.’

  5. platypus says:

Why does she always talk as if she’s giving a speech? Seems exhausting. And silly.

  6. Lucy2 says:

That Pirates movie set seems to be cursed!
If actors want to come out and live openly, i think that’s great. But I always got the impression that Amber made her big announcement in an effort to be more famous and try to bolster her career.

    • Mmmhmm says:

It really is. I’M DYING! I want the crew to write a tell-all book about everything that went down. I’m really excited to see the movie though.

  7. Jegede says:

I saw her on Fallon and she has zero charisma.

Its odd one so pretty, and bloviates so much in interviews can be such a bore on screen. (In another interview she misused the words ‘minutiae’ and ‘dearth’, which was embarrassing for such a try -hard intellect).

Maybe thats why her films flop so much.

    • Kiddo says:

It was the unwitting proponents who were at it again, messing up her mojo.

    • I Choose Me says:

      Hi Jegede.

I’m with you on the zero charisma. She’s so pretty but so very milquetoast. There’s nothing uniquely striking about her face or personality no matter how hard she tries to come across as cool.

    • Luca76 says:

Yeah she’s one of those people you look over subconsciously despite being beautiful . She has the exact opposite of star power.

      • Kiki says:

I have to agree with all of you she has no charisma in her body at all. She is not funny and completely boring. She should be KStwe girlfriend instead. But she is really pretty.a

  8. Lilacflowers says:

Perhaps if she would stop talking about it and talk about something else instead?

  9. SilkyP says:

That red dress reminds me of something… Hmmm…

Yes, I’ve got it! Just put a vertical slit down the middle of the dress, wear some fancy lingerie underneath and it is vintage Frederick’s of Hollywood! The black satin platform shoes are already perfect for that look, no way to improve on those.

    • Snowflake says:

Yes! Or what peg bundy would wear to try and seduce Al on married with children

  10. Mmmhmm says:

Johnny should get rid of her. He can do way better, she is bringing him down. I don’t want to see her with him at the Black Mass premieres/award shows, she’ll make it all about herself as usual.

She is the only one responsible for smuggling her dogs.

  11. Jessiebes says:

    Stfu Amber.

  12. bns says:

She is trying sooo hard to carve out a specific image for herself, but it’s still not working 😂

  13. QQ says:

don’t oppress the poor dear talking about her bisexuality or her beauty: But here, have another quick interview about it

  14. Kym says:

Johnny was at the premiere .. he just couldnt find his way out of the limo.
She is very pretty but I can tell from here that she is WORK. Her interviews are the worst.

  15. ell says:

here’s the thing; I’m bisexual and I agree with everything she says about it. it shouldn’t be seen as something wild, sexy or a scandal or even worse a lie/joke. it should be accepted because it just is. nowadays there seem to be more acceptance for the G&L in lgbtq, but bisexuals don’t seem to get as much recognition or support.

it bugs me though that it has to be her being one of the very few outspoke bisexuals in hollywood, because she doesn’t come across very well. ever.

    • kri says:

Ell, I agree with you. To me, it’s no big deal. If someone states they are bi, then they are bi. No problem. My issue with her is that she uses it when she wants attention. I don’t really see her doing alot to help out the LGBT community(i could be wrong as I don’t pay her much attention). She’s a bad actress who married a drunken pirate. Her ship is sinking, so she grabbed her bi raft and jumped.

      • Yana says:

But why does she have to ‘help out’ the community?

      • kri says:

Yana-she doesn’t “have to” help out the community. All I’m saying is, if you are open about your sexuality and use it as a talking point in interviews, then why not put a little something behind your constant using of your sexuality for publicity and draw some attention to the many issues of the community that you are a part of? Once again, she doesn’t have to help. As a matter of fact, I’m betting she is exactly the type of person who wouldn’t.

      • Yana says:

@kri I’m guessing you have never read any past interviews with Amber because she does talk about some of the major issue bisexual women face: men sexualizing it, still being bi even when you are in a relationship with a man, or the biphobic ‘they only do it for attention’.

    • Otaku Fairy says:

@ell: I agree with you that gays and lesbians seem to get more support and recognition than bisexuals, if we’re talking about support and recognition from people in more liberal/progressive/feminist crowds. And it seems like the second a man does anything that even slightly deviates our of the heterosexual masculine norm, people are ready and willing to believe that he’s gay or bisexual, no questions asked (even if he denies it) but if a woman says or in any way hints that she’s bisexual, reactions are more dismissive and cynical. Especially if it’s a woman who doesn’t present as either masculine or androgynous most of the time.

  16. Jemma says:

Yes, shes pretty.period. is that enough to have a Career?? For a girl who claim shes an artist and complain about her roles… In MMXXL she plays a bisexual-hardpartying-freespirit!! Lol…shes not an actress!! shes a wannabe and a poseur…. Plus she sound stupid, always talking about the same things…boring!!! next!! Thanks to Johnny cause nobody woild talk about her!!!!

  17. Tiffany says:

Jeremy Clarkson was rude….but also accurate.

  18. Jayna says:

Another pretentious female actress and/or pop star giving an interview. Even good points get lost in the rest of the blah, blah, blah parts.

  19. Skins says:

Doesn’t she say this in pretty much every interview

  20. Livealot says:

I prefer Margot Robbie as far as talent.
Sn: she looks beautiful in that top photo. Wrong venue but beautiful

  21. Naddie says:

Is she the one who wanted to be “the next Angelina Jolie”?

    • Miffy says:

Doesn’t every ‘hot chick’ actress want to be the next Jolie? COUGH *Megan Fox* COUGH!!!

  22. jammypants says:

She is very beautiful but so vapid.

  23. FLORC says:

Clarkson is a huge jerk, but that was how Amber wanted to be introduced. this is no secret. Around that whole span of a year she was openly marketing herself in interviews as a hot blonde who’s into girls and muscle cars. She was introduced that way WITH her consent.
I think until just before her Rum Diary days she was still talking about her bi preference and how she enjoyed her long term gf and thinks it’s hot to be a grease monkey. (Not usinng grease monkey in a rude way. was her wording)

She opened the door to this and spoke of it like it was something we should care about. That it defined her so she’d stand out in peoples minds instead of another blonde actress. How quickly this is forgotten.

    • Sticks says:

THIS!! She totally used it to stand out in the crowd of pretty young blond actresses in Hollywood. I had never heard of her before Rum Diaries and I saw the crappy movie and still don’t remember her in it. Funny she’s so damn bland. Anyway, all this is pretty rich, now that she has all the perks of being Mrs. Depp, that she no longer wishes to be defined by it.

  24. iheartjacksparrow says:

For being such an artiste, I found this review of MMXXL to be funny:

Amber Heard (2014’s “3 Days to Kill”) takes over as Mike’s potential love interest, a photographer named Zoe whom he meets during his travels, but it says something about the slimness of the role that her best moment has her threatening to cut him out when she learns he prefers Oreos to red velvet cake.

    • Chrissy says:

Lol. I’m sure her performance was Oscar- worthy, though. SMH.

      • Jenna says:

        Another one

But although Tatum does a cool little Flashdance in his toolshed, he never looks 100% comfortable while Amber Heard’s sour-faced wannabe photographer makes for the most miserable love interest this side of Twilight. A performance made for the cutting room floor if ever there was one.

      • Ange says:

What is it with them casting angry, sour women as love interests in those movies? The girl from the first one was the same. Is it that a woman can’t be taken seriously as a ‘girlfriend’ unless she’s somehow so grounded as to be unlikable?

  25. Abby says:

She seems like such a wet blanket. Why can’t they picks someone fun for the love interest in the Magic Mike franchise? Jennifer Lawrence, or selena gomez or something… would be so fun. The first love interest was lame and wooden too.

  26. Betti says:

She doesn’t need to worry about that – she’s being defined by who she married, nothing else not even her ‘talent’.

  27. mary simon says:

If you don’t want to be defined by it, then STFU about it.
