Tom Hardy & Michael Fassbender have new Oscar-baity trailers: yay or nay?

Ahead of America’s Independence Day holiday tomorrow, many people are going to be tapping out early today or just phoning it in completely. I plan to spend my Independence Day as the Founding Fathers intended, watching Channing Tatum’s taut butt in a thong as he dances to Ginuwine’s “Pony” (I think Ben Franklin would be proud). But for those of you wanting some hot man action for the holiday weekend, behold! Two of our favorite dudes have new full-length trailers out right now.

First up – Tom Hardy in Legend. We discussed the teaser trailer a while back, but the full-length trailer was released several days ago, and I thought you would enjoy. Beware… there’s a lot of violence in this trailer, but the bigger issue is that it feels like they’re giving away a lot of the movie. Still… I’ll see this. Imagine if Tom Hardy really had a twin. Sweet lord… and he looks so beautiful here. Ridiculously beautiful.

Next up: my former #1 Crush Michael Fassbender in his Oscar-baity turn in Steve Jobs. I kind of wonder why they didn’t give this some kind of clever name, like iJobs or something (that’s a freebie, Universal Pictures!). The prestige talent on this film is considerable. Oscar-nominee Fassbender, Oscar winner Kate Winslet costarring, Oscar winner Aaron Sorkin screenwriting, Oscar winner Danny Boyle directing. Oscar Oscar Oscar. But after I watched this, I came away thinking… God, Steve Jobs was such a dick. I never read Walter Isaacson’s authorized biography (which is the source material for this), but I remember hearing “Oh yeah, Steve Jobs was a nightmare as a boss.” A lot of people say, “You should make allowances for that kind of genius.” I’m not sure I’m there though, mostly because I never belonged to The Cult of Apple. At least they’re not really sugar-coating it in the film.

Sigh… if this is Fassy’s next chance for an Oscar, I won’t complain. But I just hope Fassy plays ball this time around and isn’t so pissy about the money being spent for his Oscar campaign.

He’s working with Weinstein, got into a pr romance with one of his up and coming girls (AV ), and has started to go on pap walks with her, of course Fassbender is going to play ball. I just hope he doesn’t try to insult anyone’s intelligence by acting like he really doesn’t want it.

    • Mia4S says:

He’s not working with Weinstein. Weinstein has MacBeth and so far has not even scheduled a North American release date. (Yes I am bitter! I want my Bard!) Weinstein is busy kissing Jake Gyllenhaal’s butt; at least until Southpaw underperforms.

On topic: These both look fantastic.

      • Beth No. 2 says:

Southpaw has had lacklustre reviews; 60% on Rotten Tomatoes, 57% on Metacritic. I like Jake a lot, but Harvey has been losing his touch for a few year already and I’m rubbing my hands in glee.

      • Kiki says:

Can we rub hands togethe, two’s a company @Beth no.2

      • jinni says:

I know that Weinstein isn’t involved in Jobs and just because Macbeth doesn’t have a release date now doesn’t mean it won’t have a prime Oscar bait release date announced later this year. Also as Beth no.2 pointed out Sotuhpaw isn’t getting the kind of buzz that makes it seem like a contender which even though Jake is getting good reviews for his performance can kill his chances of getting nominated. So, Harvey could still very well change his attentions to Fassbender at any moment. Besides, people that work with HW are hungry for that award and will play his game in order to get. People didn’t think Cumberbatch would and look what happened to him. Fassbender will be no different.

      • Beth No. 2 says:

        @Kiki – Absolutely! 😀

On a general note, I think Fassy will play ball if he embarks on an Oscar campaign, whether it’s for Macbeth or Jobs. I just hope he wouldn’t try to act above-it-all like Cumby.

    • K. says:

LOL at Weinstein… Weinstein doesn’t give a fuc* about Macbeth. Plus it’s Shakespeare and people who have already seen it say it’s too grim and violent to be an Oscar contender. IF he’ll be nominated it will be for Steve Jobs. IF Vikander will be nominated,it will be for The Danish Girl. Do you know what? They are not Weinstein movies!!! LOL but fans will continue to make excuses.

      • Kiki says:

@beth no.2, I am sure Fassy will be nominated for an Oscar in the next year, so this couple of months til next year will be exhausting for an actor. And @K. Whether or not AV is on Harvey girl, and she is. This Girl is going to her campaign so badly, til it hurts. After all she wants to be more famous, and I will be you she will be as modest as possible. Oh wait… She is modest. So much for being thirsty for more fame and fortune.

      • K. says:

@Kiki She IS… lol Why?She has never worked with Weinstein aside from one movie that is not being predicted by anyone. Her next projects aren’t Weinstein movies.Weinstein will campaign for the actresses in his movies and certainly not for her. She’ll campaign badly… so what? Perfect example of a fan making excuses.

      • Kiki says:

@k. I am not a fan of anyone, I am just sick and tired all of these actors and actresses who have all the privileges in the world and all they do is whine, complained and gloat at their sucess and most of all, RUB IT IN OUR FACES. I don’t care to watch movies or anything, but I will wish all of them the best. So happy campaigning

      • @Kiki
I get tired of the ones who act faux humble. Who say they’re not interested in fame, just want to work, or don’t care about awards*, etc. She’s being honest, AND she works in an industry where the campaign is just as important as the work itself. She’s merely stating what the studios are wanting….to gain awards momentum, especially since that it gives them a lot of free publicity.

*Obviously there are some actors/actresses that don’t care much about awards, on a personal level, but campaign because it is expected, etc. But some actors, when they say they don’t care about the fame or awards, or that it’s a drag….you just want to roll your eyes until they fall out.

    • Kiki says:

What does that mean “faux humble”? There is nothing wrong with humility. I agree she is honest, but being a smug is something atrocious about it. AV is talented and she should be nominated but when you say something about ” I want to be more famous” and she is already famous is just downright pretentious and arrogant, and probably she isn’t. Also she and Michael Fassbender are made for each other for public usage. Yes she is pretty and she has a bright future ahead in her acting career. She needs to be more likeable and again I love my actors and actresses to be humble, it makes them more relatable and meek

  2. Lilacflowers says:

This year’s Best Actor race is going to be a free-for-all again. Legend looks absolutely amazing.

    • Sixer says:

Can you imagine? TWO Blokes? How long is a power nap again? Cos that’s all the sleep I’d be getting.

      • Lilacflowers says:

Fifteen minutes, Sixer. Two blokes. On the screen. At the same time. A tour de force of Blokedom. The only way this could be better and more bloke-y would be if Idris Elba walked through a scene at such point, but I do fear that would kill you. An overdose of bloke.

      • Sixer says:

15 minutes seems a little on the long side. I’ll go for forty (um… thirty-nine?) winks instead.

      • Lilacflowers says:

You do what is best for you in the enjoyment of all that is Bloke-y

      • lower-case deb says:

        two blokes? True Blokes!
keep imagining a vampire spinoff for tv. it can be sparkley (or not) as they want it to be.

anniversary episodes with idris, much welcome also.

  3. Seán says:

Fassbender is a great actor but he really cannot maintain an American accent. His Irish accent keeps slipping through – just as it did in Shame and 12 Years A Slave.

    • Betti says:

HIs accent in 12 Years wasn’t too bad (i think it helped add something to it for that role). Cumby’s was terrible and made me cringe – he has a great voice but can’t do accents well.

      • Seán says:

I don’t know, I just heard a Kerry man trying to do a Southern accent watching 12 Years a Slave. It’s a shame, considering the rest of his performance was so menacing.

    • Jessica Fletcher says:

I’m with you on that, Sean. Although his accent has never been worse than X-Men: First Class for me. That was terrible.

    • Paul Ó Duḃṫaiġ says:

They did at least provide a backstory in “Shame” that Fassbender’s charactor (Brandon) was born in Ireland and only moved to states when he was 12.

In general I always hear the Kerry in his accent as well, whenever he’s doing interviews all I can think about is Pat Spillane, could be worse at least he doesn’t sound like a Healy-Rae!

  4. Beth No. 2 says:

Fassbender is an outstanding actor but I am not getting Steve Jobs from him at all. Agree the accent is distracting and he doesn’t disappear into the role as much for a biopic, at least from what little was shown. That said I do like the visual style in the trailer. It reminds me of The Social Network, especially with Aaron Sorkin also on board. It’s a pity David Fincher and Christian Bale dropped out from the project; this looks like something right in their wheelhouse.

As for Legend, love Tom Hardy and hope it does well. Though the trailer gives me American gangster comedy vibes, rather than London. Reminds me of American Hustle.

    • Britt says:

I looooove the trailer of Legend and i think this is a movie in which Tom Hardy can show the world (again) of what he’s capable off. Although he’s an actor who’s difficult ‘to pin down’ by the academy, I think he deserves an Oscar-nomination by now. He an actor who can play games with your imagination… 😉

      • Lilacflowers says:

He deserved one last year for Locke. He was far more deserving than some who were nominated.

      • Beth No. 2 says:

I’m absolutely down with Hardy getting an Oscar nod. He won LACFA last year for Locke which was unexpected. Though 2015 may not be his year; AMPAS doesn’t warm up to comedies (there are exceptions of course), and the Best Actor field looks very crowded. Hopefully he’ll land a great Oscar vehicle in future!

Last year I was rooting for Jake Gyllenhaal in Nightcrawler. Creepy, makes-my-skin-crawl performance.

  5. nic says:

A/ I think fassy is entitled to his informed opinion on the wank fest the Oscars have become and b/ I love him.

  6. Maya says:

So far Fassbender has two potential Oscar baits, Tom Hardy one, Eddie Redmayne one – 3 British actors could be nominated.

But I am not sure the academy will give the best actor to another British two years in a running.

Fassbender’s body, Tom Harry’s face and Anthony Hopkins voice – now that’s a dream British man…..

    • Lilacflowers says:

1989-1991 Daniel Day-Lewis, Jeremy Irons, and Anthony Hopkins. 2010-2012 saw three non-Americans take it: Colin Firth, Jean Dujardin, and Daniel Day-Lewis. There weren’t any Brits nominated in the year Dujardin won.

    • Applapoom says:

Fassy is Irish though (and half German) so Academy might not have a problem with him.

    • Jessica Fletcher says:

      Fassbender is not British!

      • p'enny says:

His mother is from Northern Ireland, I think, Dad is german, which no doesn’t make him British, but doesn’t make him Irish either. It’s up to him to chose which side he identifies the most with. And, that I don’t know.

      • Paul Ó Duḃṫaiġ says:

Fassbender has an Irish passport as well as a dodgy South Kerry accent, ye can’t get more Irish than that ffs.

      • Original T.C. says:

In one interview he said that he still uses his Childhood German passport and also proudly claims his Irish roots. He can still speak basic German so I’m assuming he decided not to play the “choose a side” game that children with dual heritages are offen pressured to. I’ve seen him usually referred to as an Irish-German/ German-Irish actor. But every time he opens his mouth all I think of are green Irish fields, LOL.

      • Sixer says:

Isn’t his mother’s family Republican Northern Irish? And, under the Good Friday Agreement, Northern Irish people can identify as either Irish or British and can hold either or both UK and Irish passports. I’ve never seen Fassbender describe himself as British in any way, either. I doubt he’s even close to identifying as British.

      • P'enny says:

well at the end of the day, he chose to and continues to live in London.

  7. Ari says:

I just cant wait to see Hardy make out with Taron Egerton ITS GOING TO MAKE MY YEAR I REALLY HOPE THEY MAKE OUT good lord lol

    • skedaddle says:

Saaaame! Iirc Taron described it as a quite “aggressive” scene, so I’m pumped.

  8. Mispronounced Name Dropper says:

Even though Tom is pretty good for a little fella both the Jobs and Kray movies have already been done. So it’s a no from me.

  9. kri says:

Tom Hardy in doubles. Tom Hardy with a dog. Tom Hardy being brilliant and wild onscreen. Day made.

  10. Ashley says:

I don’t think this is Hardy’s ticket to an Oscar win or nom my money is on The Revnant. Also Fassbender still has the Derek Cianfrance film The Light Between Two Oceans. Honestly Fassbender has three films from which he could be nominated but also showcase his talent.

  11. I think both of the movies look good, something that I wouldn’t be mad that I spent my money on, but neither of them look like something I’d rush out to go see on the strength of the film itself. Basically, I won’t feel like I’m missing out if I waited until it came out on DVD. I don’t really get Oscar! vibes from either movie–maybe the performances, but not the movie.

But my fave part of the “Legend” trailer was when Rennie said he wasn’t prejudiced…..haha. And wow, I haven’t seen Emily Browning in anything in a LONG time. I used to worship her, lol. I saw her in “A Series Of Unfortunate Events” and fell in LOVE.

  12. Original T.C. says:

Fassbender just cannot tone down that thick Irish accent like Bale does with his thick Welsh but I was still engrossed by his acting and the story enough to watch it twice. Full disclosure, I was of the crowd that thought this movie had disaster written all over it but damn that trailer got me. Knew Steve Jobs was a dick in real life but didn’t know about the secret child and other crazy stuff about him.

    • Really? You should watch “PIrates of the Silicon Valley”….it’s a Steve Jobs/Bill Gates biopic. I liked it…..it’s the same story. But yea–it was a HUGE thing because Steve Jobs was denying that Lisa was his daughter…..to the press, etc….but then he named one of his computers after her. If I’m remembering right, it was his first computer.

      • Original T.C. says:

Thanks for the recommendations. I will put it on my must watch list and see if after the Jobs movie to see how accurate the movie is.

    • K. says:

It’s better than what I expected.I was really engrossed by the trailer.

  13. allons-y alonso says:

I just saw ‘Slow West’ last weekend with Fassbender. He was bloody wonderful. ‘Steve Jobs’ looks very interesting too, but I’m way more pumped to see ‘Legends’.

    • Jessica says:

Me too! Hardy’s outstanding when he’s in gangster-mode (The take)! Thinking about it; he’s outstanding in anything…Love to watch this talented man on screen!

  14. Feeshalori says:

Let’s address the important issue: Tom Hardy all spiffed up and running his hands over that lovable pup! He’s just so….tactile. He seems such an animal lover which is extremely sexy.
