I haven’t had any bad experiences in theatre so far, but would occasionally encounter badly behaved children in the cinema who can’t stop talking or running up and down the aisle and the useless parents do nothing to stop them. I have no qualms telling the kids off, they’d usually quieten down and I’d get a few nasty glares from the parents who have the cheek to feel offended!

    • Lilacflowers says:

I’ve had quite a few and I have no problem summoning theater management

      • M.A.F. says:

I always get management too. I got zero time for people who can’t figure out that they are in a movie theater and can’t control either themselves or their kids.

      • delphi says:

Lilac, as a theatre professional…thank you.

I remember during a production of “Titus Andronicus” that I was stage managing, going into the audience mid-evisceration (if you know the play, you can get a further sense of the absurdity of the situation), snatching an iPhone from a patron’s hand (he was playing “Angry Birds”, and handing him a note stating he could pick it up from the ticket booth after the end of the show.

I then stuffed the offending device in my pocket, walked back to the booth, and commenced my duties. What…an asshat he was. *grr*

    • Tiffany says:

My has always been thr opposite. Kids want to watch and the adults want to pay 10 dollars to talk with their friends and play on their phone.

    • Belle Epoch says:

I was once at a school function and a mother asked me to go speak to two very rude kids who were making a disturbance on the bleachers. I said, “But… Those are your kids!”

  2. Lilacflowers says:

Way to go, Patti! I told a guy at the ballet last month to turn off his Iwatch. Devices are annoying and disruptive and if you can’t disengage long enough for a theatrical performance, don’t go to the theater

    • briargal says:

sAgree. If your social life is so important that you have to disrupt others, don’t go to the theater or concert or anywhere. A couple hours out of a person’s life without the ever present phone won’t hurt them. If there is an emergency they are waiting to hear about, then maybe they should just stay home. I’m so against these stupids phones being in people’s hands 24/7. I have watched people at a ballgame and they are constantly looking down at their stupid phones instead of watching the game. STUPID!

      • meme says:

I’m in NYC and practically everyone is looking down at their phone constantly. Some idiot was actually riding a Citibike down 42nd street, one hand on the handlebar and the other clutching the phone which he was reading! Imbeciles. I think cellphones and social media are destroying society. People talk whenever they feel like it, don’t look where they are going and text/twitter instead of having an actual conversation. UGH.

      • Vava says:

People are being ridiculous with their phones, totally agree.

      • Alice says:

I was at a funeral yesterday. Yep, someone’s phone rang.

    • Kiki04 says:

Why would anyone go to see Patti only to text on their phone the whole time?!?!?! I totally agree with what she did!

  3. deborah says:

I hate phone activity at public events but thought I might be the only one. Go Patty! I wish there were phone-free zones, where signals are blocked out.

Speaking of RUDE Donald Trump is speaking at the Luxe hotel on Wilshire in LA. I understand he will be PROTESTED. Sittith thy wig down SIT down!

  4. Tiffany says:

This is not her first time doing this. Youtube her reaction when she was performing in gypsy. It was glourious.

  5. Mia4S says:

Smart phones. Making human beings dumber, ruder, and more narcissistic one day at a time.

  6. s says:

I like to believe that Omar Sharif left this earth riding a camel away from us into the shimmering desert air.

    • Lilacflowers says:

Wearing the fabulous black costume in which he made his first appearance in Lawrence of Arabia.

      • jen2 says:

Off riding with the magnificent Peter O’Toole in his white, into the desert sunset together. Two beautiful men that put a lot more heat into an already hot desert!!

    • s says:

      Greatest entrance ever.

      • Alice says:

You’re making me cry, ladies. LOA was the first time I saw either of those gentlemen and they were glorious. RIP, Mr. Sharif.

    • Vava says:

      Awesome.

  7. Elfie says:

Good for Patti, people like that should be barred from theatres until they learn manners and consideration for others.

I’m really disappointed that Elle Fanning is going to be ruining Live by Night with her atrocious acting and irritating presence. I like Afflecks directorials but won’t be wasting my time on that. She ruins everything she’s in and I’m very suspicious as to how she gets hired when she has no talent, skills, looks, charisma….. Nothing at all. Ugh….

As for Garner being the real Amy Dunne….. hmm… I do that that impression off her sometimes and then feel guilty because she comes across as lovely in interviews. Watching Gone Girl I was wondering if that was Afflecks real life. I know he’s an actor but he’s never been that convincing before.

    • Neath23 says:

Wow tell us how you really feel and calling her ugly is low, I didn’t know you had to be “pretty” to be an actress.

      • Elfie says:

Only if you have no talent or charisma, you have to have something if you’re onscreen and she has nothing except nepotism and whatever is being done behind the scenes to get her roles she’s incapable of portraying.

There is so much untapped talent out there, it’s offensive that it’s ignored while people like that are allowed to ruin movies.

      • Near says:

It’s offensive that people like you who feel that their opinion is everyone opinion. Way to tear down someone this badly because you don’t think she a good actress. I’m not even a fan of Elle put you take to a whole nother ugly level.

Zoe Saldana Is also in the movie and you think Elle is going to ruin it. Lol

  8. Tig says:

Patti Lupone is a national treasure! I so agree with the prior poster- if something is that pressing- STAY HOME. With the cost of B’way tix- wish the theater would confiscate the stupid things!

So sad to see Omar Sheriff passed away- such a charismatic actor!

  9. OhDear says:

Good for her (Patti Lupone)! It’s ridiculous how people can’t stop looking at their phones even in a theater or walking down the street.

    • Lucky Charm says:

In church once, the priest had to announce to everyone to please turn off their phones. It’s sad that adults even have to be told or reminded when not to use their phones.

    • mary simon says:

Just had an experience at a showing of Jurassic World yesterday. The woman one seat away from me started pulling out her phone every few minutes lighting up our row – so ignorant and inconsiderate. I felt like an old witch when I barked at her to kindly stop it, that I didn’t pay to watch her phone throughout the movie. She realized she had a potential problem in me -the barking crazy lady – and she stopped the behavior. I was strong about it and the whole small theatre heard me, I’m sure. It was embarrassing, and I’m angry that she put me in the position of having to bitch. This is why I don’t go to movie theatres anymore. I’m sick of all the phone lights and the talking as if people are sitting in the privacy of their living rooms. And it is the adults who are absolutely the worst offenders.

  10. Dena says:

Not only do I applaud LuPone’s actions, I have to wonder – who the hell has the money to shell out $80-120 to go the theater (the last time I went to a Broadway show my ticket was $120) and then sits there and texts or fiddles with their phone?

I mean, it’s not cheap entertainment, nor is it something that I feel people casually drop in on (like, say, the movies). I can only afford about one show a year and it infuriates me that people apparently have the money to go but don’t appreciate the experience.

  11. Dawn says:

Good for Patti. I was leading a meeting a few weeks back and this guy didn’t look up and was just looking at his phone. So I stopped the meeting and asked if he had an emergency to get to, if not please put down your phone. He did but didn’t come back after lunch! I normally would feel bad about it but not on that day!

  12. Heather says:

She is a damn treasure. I was lucky enough to see her on broadway in the Anarchist. She is a force.

  13. Marianne says:

As much as I hate people who use their phone in the theater or anything else rude and distracting, I wish the actors wouldn’t actually bitch them out or take their phone away on stage. If I’ve paid good money to see a show, I don’t want to be taken out of it by some actor who breaks character to give some guy a lecture etc. Let the ushers deal with it.

  14. H says:

Dear God I LOVE Patti LuPone. Saw her at the Kennedy Center once and have fangirled her ever since. Brava on her.

  15. MediaMaven says:

NOBODY messes with the great and powerful Miss LuPone! She was freaking Evita, for heaven’s sake! Just stop……….

  16. Lucy2 says:

She’s amazing! I saw her in a play years ago, and there were some sort of delay, so she came out and sang for the audience to pass the time. She’s a true pro, and it’s sad that someone was lucky enough to go see her in person and didn’t appreciate it enough to stay off their phone.

  17. EmmyGrant says:

Actually, in this case, LuPone didn’t break character. It was a part of the play to go into the audience and shake someone’s hand. She just made a small adjustment and went further back into the audience than normal. Also, the rest of the audience was probably unaware she took the phone–in fact, Patti just snatched the phone so quickly that the person probably didn’t fully realize it until Patti was back on stage. Patti gave the phone to someone backstage to return to the person, and told him to “make her feel bad.” Lol.
