Cara Delevingne: ‘I hope people will give me more movies – and I’ll win an Oscar!’

wenn22604479

Cara Delevingne sat down for an interview with the NYT to promote her big starring role (?) in Paper Towns, which comes out next week in most countries. It feels like it should have already come out, right? That’s mostly because Cara has been doing non-stop promotion for Paper Towns for the past two months. In this NYT piece, she hits on some of the same issues she discussed during her Vogue cover profile – her sexuality (and how it’s not a phase), her crazy partying, her upper-crust upbringing and how much she disliked being a model. Highlights:

She did shots with Whitney Houston? “There was a point in my life where I literally lived through a camera… Watching Lars Ulrich play a Metallica show from behind the drum kit! Or doing tequila shots with Whitney Houston just before she died! When I get older, I’m going to go through that footage and have the best time, because I probably won’t remember much of it.”

She hates therapy: “I went through so much therapy as a kid, and I hated it, and because you get so used to saying the same thing over and over again, it just becomes a story…”

She always wanted to act & make music: “Modeling was never a dream of mine. But when I start something, I want to prove people wrong. I thought: I’m going to smash this as hard as I can.”

On her modeling career: “It was killing my soul.” She developed acute psoriasis, which she attributed to stress and exhaustion. “It’s the lemon effect. I’ll pick you up, squeeze everything I can out of you and throw you away for the next one.”

The 2013 incident where she dropped a bag of white powder: “I was a kid, you know? I still am in so many ways, and I’m so lucky, but I think everyone needs a bit of a slap in the face, and a reminder that no one is invincible. That’s what it was for me. Especially with young people seeing the film, I want to be clear: I’m so far away from drugs that I couldn’t possibly be further way, and whatever happened in the past is in the past, it just doesn’t exist anymore.”

She turned down stupid parts: “The part of a Swedish model or an English one, where I die all the time, or stupid girls in, like, ‘American Pie 27’ … It felt crazy to turn down roles because I thought I’d do anything to be an actress, but I realized my dignity’s more important than that.”

Getting a part in London Fields: A technician told her, “‘They’re just going for a name so they can sell the movie.’ It completely tripped me up, because that’s my worst fear. If that’s the only reason, I’d rather not get the part.”

On the Vogue controversy, where her bisexuality is described as a “phase”: “My sexuality is not a phase. I am who I am.”

Angry Baby’s Oscar: “People can put you in whatever box: model, whatever. But if I just keep going and actually do it well, which I hope I can, then I hope people will give me more movies — and I’ll win an Oscar!”

[From The NY Times]

Granted, I’ve never been on Delevingne Train, but it really struck me in this interview… Cara could easily be a younger version of Lindsay Lohan. Lindsay would give these sort of half-brash, half-braggy interviews when she was 20 and 21 years old too. Lindsay blamed her drug problems on “being young” too (even though Cara’s coke baggie incident was barely two years ago!). Lindsay complained about not being taken seriously as an actress too. Lindsay told media outlets that she would win an Oscar too. And like Cara, I’m sure Lindsay did shots with Whitney Houston (Jesus, that’s an awful story!!!). It seems like Cara is sort of taking the Lindsay Lohan “wild child” route and trying to redo the second act. Will she pull it off? Will Paper Towns turn Cara into a bona fide movie star? Ugh.

It’s hard to tell if she was joking when she talked about winning an oscar… if not, how stupid!

I hope she is off coke. She has a history of addiction in her family and she doesn’t seem the steadiest of people in general. She probably thinks she has to do the whole Crazy Cara thing at parties. It must be exhausting being ‘on’ all the time.

When she breaks up with St Vincent she might be a hot mess.

    • Bluebell says:

I think you should say “if” she breaks up with St Vincent. It’s not nice to assume a relationship is going to end when they seem to be doing well. It’s like when guys say “my current girlfriend”.

      • G says:

        I don’t believe for a second they will last – she’s 21, she’s 31? In my opinion – it’s WHEN they break up.

      • Bluebell says:

Okay fair enough. Didn’t know about the age gap, but tbh lots of successful relationships have biggish gaps and 10 years is not *that* much. But point taken.

      • qwerty says:

Oh so now it’s ok cause there’s a 10 year age difference? Look who’s judgy now lol

      • Jessica says:

All relationships end at some point. It’s not a matter of “if”, it’s a matter of “when”.

  2. Lilacflowers says:

    Not. Seeing. Paper. Towns.

  3. casey says:

    Next.

  4. Talie says:

As long as she doesn’t get arrested she should be fine. The difference between Lohan and Cara is that Cara keeps company with other famous people who are well protected.

    • qwerty says:

Also, Cara has supportive family and 2 older sisters who turned out fine. Lohan’s primary problem was the mess at home, which would cause problems regardless of her fame. Of course she’s way past the point where she can blame her choices on her family these days.

  5. Jem says:

Oh Lord… Another dimwit who thinks an Oscar will magically bestow Meryl-Streep like respect on her. Idiot.

  6. Bee says:

She doesn’t seem anything like Lohan.

    • Elisa the I. says:

      +1.
I actually quite like her answers in this interview.

    • minime says:

I don’t get the comparison either.
I’m not particularly a fan of hers but in this interview she actually comes across as quite witty. It doesn’t seem like she takes herself that serious and she’s owning her mistakes…she didn’t deny that it was drugs.
Paper Towns looks interesting…I’ll watch it.

      • Shannon1972 says:

I might watch Paper Towns when it comes on Netflix, but I agree with everything else you said. I think she comes off pretty well here, and seems much more self aware than Lohan ever did. The comparison is unfair in that every young celebrity who acts out is held up to the extreme Lohan comparison…not to mention that LL was a very gifted actress who squandered great talent. I’m not sure that’s the case here.

      • qwerty says:

THIS. Cara admitted the truth. Something Lohan NEVER DOES.

  7. frisbeejada says:

The ‘London Fields’ technician was right, she was obviously hired for her name recognition, not recognising that suggests she doesn’t have the firmest grasp on reality. Plus if she want an Oscar why doesn’t she try for a Drama school (she can clearly afford one unlike the majority of aspiring actors in the UK), do some Theater, learn her craft the hard way as the best actors tend to do? Or does she simply want the recognition and acclaim and Oscar would bring without putting in any of the actual effort.

  8. LB says:

Well it’s good to have goals…

  9. GlimmerBunny says:

She’s so beautiful. I love her eyes. If she can act remains to be seen, but the reviews have been pretty good so far.

  10. kri says:

Justin Theroux better watch out. It looks like the The Emoting Eyebrow has some competition. X’s two.

  11. Katherine says:

    LMAO Go way

  12. Nives says:

More like she will win a Razzie LOL

  13. georgia says:

Her accent in the paper towns commercial makes my ears hurt.

  14. Alex says:

I wish they would stop trying to make her happen.

  15. G says:

cant with her / friend collector bad enough shes in suicide squad

  16. Marianne says:

I wish actors would be a little more humble sometimes. Like, its ok to be ambitious and work hard to be taken seriously or whatever. But I find it so distasteful when its like “I will win an Oscar”. Especially since her acting career is JUST starting out. Its nice to dream, its nice to hope, but she just comes across as so cocky.

    • Kiki says:

@Marianne. I was saying that a few post ago about AV ambitions, but most of these her AV fans are fighting with me, and I didn’t say a bad word about her. I wish Cara and Alicia Vikander should be more humbe about their ambitions. It ok to say aspire to have an Oscar but not be pretentios and cocky about it.

    • Timbuktu says:

I really don’t get Cara: I think she’s very average-looking with terrible eyebrows, and her interviews don’t make me like her for her beautiful soul or anything. And having seen the trailer, I seriously doubt she’ll blow me away with her acting talent if I see Paper towns.
This being said, I think that the Oscar comment MUST be judged in conjunction with tone. There’s a Russian saying: “a soldier who does not dream of becoming a general is a bad one”. I think any actress SHOULD want an Oscar, but it’s one thing to laughingly acknowledge that, while making it abundantly clear that they are not holding their breath any time soon. It’s another to be full of oneself and act entitled to it. Her words could really swing either way (no pun intended), based on how exactly she said that. Since Paper towns is hardly Oscar material, I am hoping for the former.

  17. Fori says:

It’s unfair to compare her to Lindsay, Lindsay had a nasty attitude toward other people, threw toddler like tantrums whenever she didn’t get the attention she wanted, was phenomally lazy with long spells of chosen unemployment and ended up developing a personality disorder because everybody indulged her.

Cara is wild but hard working and has a good grip on reality. There is no comparison. She’ll calm down and grow up.

  18. serena says:

Cara doesn’t bother me at all. She is quite harmless. Just another London-based It-girl who may or may not be a junkie/addict. That’s her rep, but most likely not in real life. Before Cara, it was Sienna. Before her, it was Kate. And after Cara, it will be someone else.

She is only 20 – she can very well win an Oscar at some point. I mean, Jennifer Hudson has won an Oscar! Where is her movie career now? This girl has a bigger career in better movies than most actresses twice her age.

So she is off with modelling? I can’t see that happening just yet. She was just on the cover of Vogue and the angle was ‘It-girl model who acts’. It is her bread and butter, and main source of notoriety.

I also like that Blind Item about her and Henry Cavill. Kind of hot like in a very sleazy erotic novel sort of way, even though I really dislike him now. They are both quite attractive – what can I say????

    • Courtney says:

I must have missed something about Cavill… Why is he getting hate now?

      • serena says:

He is proven himself to be a misogynist and a homophobe – according to very accountable sounding stories on social media.

These stories have become a bit of a huge deal among his ‘fandom’. He is hot, so he’ll remain unscathed. But I believe the stories, not because it is fun to be a btch or jerk and hate on some random celeb, but because they sound way too believable to dismiss or negate.

It seems he allegedly has a substance abuse (alcohol) issue that triggers some truly reprehensible behavior. So I find him hot on the outside, vile on the inside.

      • Valois says:

serena, do you have any links summing that whole thing up? I tried to find some on my own, but “H C homophobe” didn’t bring any results.

      • serena says:

        @ Valois

It won’t, because it is a whole story only his fans are aware of.

When he was in Ireland, he apparnetly invited some random people he did not know (but just met at that music fest) to his hotel suite for an after party. During which, he apparently insulted and bullied a 19 year old kid by making fun of his ‘gayness’. When the kid, who looked to be a massive fan of his prior to the incident and was most likely ecstatic to have met him and been invited to his room, was offended after this, Henry did not bother to apologize but basically said he could not be a homophobe, for he knows a lot of gay people in Hollywood.

The kid wrote all about it on Instagram, but then deleted his account or smthng. There were also pics posted before the incident where he and Henry and his friends are all chummy in idiotic selfies. I saw all of it on his Instagram.

I think Henry said something like “I cant even hear you speak because of your gayness” or smthng to that effect in front of all his friends. The kid sounded really disappointed and broken in his comment on Instagram, and accused him of homophobia.

So basically he bullied a 19 year old gay fan when he was loaded… as he always is from the looks of it.

Here is the link to the kid’s comment:

  19. TreadStyle says:

This made me think of how everyone hates on Alicia Vikander and calls her pretentious for saying Oscar related things but for Cara to say something it’s no biggie and she’s a wild party girl so it’s all good? So confusing. She def gets a pass from people, I mean saying she took shots with Whitney Houston and having to also add “right before she died”?!

    • Serena says:

Lainey has a BI about Vikander. She’s so desperate to be like JLaw LOL

      • serena says:

omg we share the same name!!! lol that’s funny.

        Serena & serena

      • Ctkat1 says:

That BI pretty much confirms my opinion of Vikander. Yikes. Even if you privately think that you’re more talented and deserving of success than JLaw, you don’t go to your boyfriend’s event and say it out loud, especially when he is co-starring with her!
She’s really high on herself, isn’t she?

      • Serena says:

        Serena
        @serena OMG 🙂
@Ctkat1 She apparently was at an industry event loudly comparing herself to JLaw,implying she should have her career in a competitive and comparative way isn’t good especially because she made all this within earshot of Jlaw. This is cringeworthy and doesn’t put her in godd light with industry people and media. Probably people at the event were embarrassed for she. She made a fool of herself LOL

    • Kiki says:

I for one have not said a bad word about Vikander except she is pretentious, and I have not said a bad word about Cara D., except she is rich, privilege, entitled and pretentious. They can row a boat together. But I have said eve thing bad about Amber Heard and I don’t care she is stupid, spoil brat.

  20. Chic says:

I dont think its very wise to burn her modelling bridges before the film comes out, its likely shes going to need those pay checks in the future.

    • teacakes (formerly oneshot) says:

she’s descended from some very posh and well connected people, even if she burns every bridge she’s ever had to the fashion world she’ll be just fine.

  21. Dani says:

I find it extremely disrespectful that she can trash modeling when it literally made her everything she is, at the moment. I never understand when celebrities complain about a career move that catapulted their careers. Don’t be ungrateful. No one forced you in to it.

  22. Cara says:

Well, if the trailer for Paper Towns is any indicator, she’s going to be waiting quite a while for that Oscar. 😒

  23. Naddie says:

Just another talentless model who thinks she can act. Also, I read the plot of Papper Towns and I can’t believe how stupid it is.

  24. MB says:

I really never got the appeal of this chick at all. And then I saw her on Jimmy Fallon the other night and I was struck by how witty and sweet she seemed. She was utterly charming and funny and now I think she is my new girl crush.

  25. Jellybean says:

    Now that’s a celebrity!

  26. LadyoftheLoch says:

The girl has moxy, loads of it. Yes, she comes across quite badly in this interview with her jabbering re an Oscar and downing shots with Whitney Houston “right before she died” but her charisma is off the charts. She’s beautiful (imo) but not conventionally so, which makes her stand out, plus she refuses to be pigeon-holed into being “just” a model, which is refreshing and fierce. Providing she can stay focused (doesn’t become another drug casualty) and can hone her acting skills, I predict she’ll go far. She has that indefinable “It” factor in spades.

    • teacakes (formerly oneshot) says:

she comes off as extremely immature but she was successful because she was more distinctive-looking than the usual ‘children of’ who go into modelling, and she was the first high fashion model to really use social media as leverage.

She has plenty of trainwreck potential but whatever she’s up to so far hasn’t yet reached even close to Lohan levels.

      • LadyoftheLoch says:

Something about her (attitude not looks) reminds me of a young Jolie. A certain je ne sais quoi. Perhaps it’s the angel/rebel combination, I can’t quite define it.

She may have a bumpy introduction to the next phase of her career when she fully understands how hard she’ll have to work to polish her skills. She may also hit the headlines a few times, enough to make a total ass of herself and cause some shock ripples along the way, because, yes, she’s only 20 and still immature, but she’s one to watch, I’d say.

  27. Anna says:

    @LadyoftheLoch
She will be 23 this August

    • LadyoftheLoch says:

Oh, now I feel old, lol.

Someone upthread said she was 20 and I just ran with that.

  28. ClaireJ says:

Love her as a model, but somehow the ‘It Factor’ does not translate onto film for me. Wish she would stop hanging with Kendall Jenner and the like. Only because I am so sick of seeing them at the opening of an envelope.

  29. Carmelita says:

Sure. Good luck with that, Evil Simpsons Baby.
